Visiting the Beautiful Small Irish Town With a BIG History. Titanic's LAST Port of Call: Cobh

  • This is the problem with sitting browsing the internet. A quiet Tuesday evening quickly becomes a very early Wednesday morning with the alarm going off and me questioning what I booked last night. But this was the only moment of regret, once I arrived in Ireland, I knew I was onto something pretty cool. Originally I'd thought a wee overnighter in Cork was the plan. I'm so glad I went the extra few miles to Cobh - It is genuinely one of the coolest towns I've ever visited, with everything I look for - sea views, ships of all description, friendly, laid back locals, and a proper Guinness :)
Join me on my short time in Cobh and discover some of the history this small town has to offer. And yes, I'll also take you for that pint.
Filmed on location in Cobh, County Cork on 22nd/23rd June 2022.
    Itinerary and costs:
    Ryanair flights £50
    22 Jun EDI ORK FR3732 0735 0855
    23 Jun ORK EDI FR3739 2140 2255
    Seat Reservations £4 per flight
Bus Cork Airport - City 2.20euro each way
Train Cork - Cobh 3.90euro each way
Garden Room at West Beach House £70 (with some booking.com discount - may be a tad more normally)

Just a few comments.... Firstly, that abandoned village on Spike was connected to the Fort. It housed the families of married British Army or Barracks personnel (single men stayed in the Barracks). Their children had to be ferried across to Cobh, to school, each day. When a child turned 18, they had to leave the island. Secondly, the Lusitania was sunk 8 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale, but the bodies were brought to Cobh/Queenstown. The Courtmacsherry Lifeboat was the closest and set out from Broadstrand, in what was actually a rowing boat. By the time they got out there, they were collecting bodies. Thirdly, my granduncle was one of the 123 who boarded the Titanic, but unfortunately he drowned.

Thanks so much Steve. I just found this and Timely to say the least. My wife and I are going on a 10 day trip to Ireland (8/days there)/in the middle of April. Kinsale is on our itinerary but now we will make it a point to spend a day in Cobh. My grandparents were all from County Cork and I can’t wait to get back to my roots. I’ve always been drawn to the sea and now I know why. Thanks for an awesome guide! Jim from Brooklyn, NY.

I was in Cobb in October 1995 but didn't spend much time there. I did see the memorial to the Titanic and one for all the Irish, largely sponsored by Irish-Americans, who left there to come to America. My father's ancestors came from a town near Cork, and probably left from Cobb (Queenstown) in 1840, before the Great Famine, to Boston, later setting in central NY State.

Hi Steve. Loved your video (subscribed). The first time we visited Ireland was 23 years ago with our two sons. They were 21 and 22 at the time. Now, we'll be returning to Ireland this June (2023). Except, this time we will be with our two sons and their families. A total of ten of us (including four grandkids) will be in Ireland for ten days. My wife and I are looking forward to seeing Ireland again, but this time through our grandkid's eyes - ages seven to sixteen. Last time we were in Cork we looked in a phone book for our family name (Sullivan). We were happy to see the Sullivan name was so well represented.

Hi Steve. 😊 I was in Southern Ireland away back in 1991, when I was a young man. I was travelling about by train. I reached Cork City, and then took the rails as far west as I could, to Tralee. I saw the name Cobh, at Cork station, but back then I had no idea
it had been where the Titanic sailed from, or even been known as Queenstown. There is also a Queenstown in my home country of New Zealand😊 Anyway that was a lovely poignant video

Oh that was a wee trip down memory lane. My mum took me on sailing holidays to cobh when I was in my early teens right up to early twenties in the 90s. Spike Island was still a prison. I remember beaching there once and being very careful to stay below the tide line as to not get in trouble from the guards that came rushing along the road. There are many other stories but one I think involved the Roaring Donkey!!

So much contrast in one small town, the beauty of the globe and the colourful facades of the house compared to the sadness of jfk, Lusitania and the titanic pier, I can imagine the ‘last walk’ of the prisoner through those dark tight corridors. So glad your practising for New Year’s Day 2,023 steps. You’ll make it

Awesome that Steve. We've been just along the coast to Kinsale a couple of times which is a cracking wee place but have never explored east of Cork. We're definitely going to visit Cobh someday though as it looks gorgeous so thanks for the heads up. On our last Kinsale trip we drove the Ring of Kerry which was spectacular and right up your street. We also did a fab whale watching trip out of Baltimore with Whale Watch West Cork and it was amazing as we saw loads of dolphins and a few minkies. Nic Slocum and his crew really look after you on his boats so that's very much recommended too 👍

A lot late but some more info on theTitanic, the survivors ended up in NYC they stayed in a building that is now The Jane Hotel, it was a Sailors home and institute. Over time it kept its heratige with the sea in the rooms (Cabins). Its worth reading the history for anyone interested in the ship and the events around its sinking.
