  • A lockdown compliant run out into Southampton water to make the most of a weather window before a week of predicted storms. There was no target species but I did expect an appearance from the Tings.
    I have spent time fine tuning my anchor set-up and with a larger buoy (A4) and a lighter chain, I think I now have it dialled in. This was going to be my first attempt at the Alderney method at night.
    I am fishing with 2 very cheap rod, reel & line setups purchased from Decathalon and at time of buying they were £34 each. For the price they obviously have their limitations but coped with the conditions on the day.
    I also had my new Shakespeare ugly Stik’s, Daiwa SL30SH reels and Berkeley whiplash braid.

    For centuries people have tried to describe fishing with pen and paper. But some smart, fun and most creative people like you, have turned it into reality and made it really interesting.
    Thanks for sharing this nice fishing.

    Hi, Mark, watched one of your posts and like a Big Greedy Bass got hooked. I ended up watching loads over the weekend. Good quality media and sound, interesting,fun and educational. Its almost like you are there. I find myself watching your rod tips while your back is turned talking to us.It was also nice to hear you comment about some of your other skills so people could reach out during these difficult times. Keep up the fantastic posts, I am sure it is appreciated by many and will continue to grow. Thanks and well done. Mike

      Mike, thank you for the kind words it is very much appreciated. It is inspiring to know the connection is there as it is something I have worked on. I try to talk to the camera as if it is someone I know and the channel has provided so many friends. One year after starting no one is more surprised than me that people like to watch.
      Glad you have found us, take care. 👍🏻

    The Americans call it cutbait, and yes, it's a pretty popular method. They tend to use massive chunks, which stay attached better than the delicate, soft baits we tend to use.

      Due to family issues and illness I haven't fished in a while. Usually I fished hartlepool to whitby.
      Lads I talk to seem to be having a lean time, except the ones fishing rock marks or cliffs.
      After years of moaning and pointless killing of whiting, they are complaining now that they aren't catching them.

    hi Mark - really think you'd benefit from using the uptide method. Before coming to NZ, much of my fishing was from a boat over the Essex sandbanks, we'd cast a sinker with long tailed grip wires (all wires come out of the bottom of the sinker, through 1" of metal tubing then bend back up at 45 deg angle). Other than that, the set up was a basic running ledger. Cast 30deg up tide, let it hit the bottom, let out a belly of line so the sinker digs in, then wait for a fish to come along and dislodge it. You could get away with 6oz leads as opposed to the 10oz you are using, plus it got your line away from the 'noise' made by the anchor rope. Works well in depths up to about 50 ft

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use to fish that way many moons ago and will get back to it. I haven’t got the correct leads atm and I’ve been concentrating on other things. It is a very effective method and will help disperse the 4 rods that I have better. Fish 2 upside and 2 long down tide. 👍🏻

    As Kevin just commented every days a learning curve. Very enjoyable. Personally I would sell your cheapies and invest in the lighter version of your ugly sticks. In depths like there is in your area a lighter job would be a good way to. That's probably my year of species comps coming out.

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll be keeping the cheapies for 3 reasons really:
      1: they will made perfect mackerel rods and I can leave them rigged ready to go.
      2: I’d like to get my nipper interested and one will be perfect for him to learn.
      3: I can take others out and have rods they can use.
      Plus they are worth more to me than their monetary value.
      I do have a need for at least another rod fit to target much bigger species but at the moment I e spent plenty. 😂

    Hi Mark.
    What type/length of boat do you have?

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, it is a Warrior 165. They are very roomy for a small boat and they have a wide beam. Pretty quick up on the plane with a fast cruising speed.

  • @robertpaterson7311
    @robertpaterson7311 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Mark, I am looking at the Warrior 165 as my next boat but wondered what your thought are of it ? I am looking for a boat the is a comfortable ride (not slamming) to get out to marks 7/8 miles out. Any thoughts would be appreciated or boats you would probably go for if you could swap. Cheers Bob

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob, if you want to have a chat you can message me through Facebook or messenger and we could talk about them, pros and cons.
      Otherwise I would say I’ve always felt safe in mine. They have an air tight hull void that is easily tested/checked and further buoyancy under the front seats. Mine planes above 13-14 knots and cruises with the 70hp Suzuki at 18-20 knots, tops out at 31-32 knots with tide and wind in favour.
      They are trim sensitive and can porpoise but if adjusted well and balanced they go very well. In chop they do not slice and you will need to reduce speed for a comfortable ride.
      In open water I’ve never had to leave before others and comfort is above average for a 16’ boat at anchor.

    Hi Mark, out of interest how much does it cost to maintain a small boat annually, rough guide ty m8 jules

    • @seaangling
      @seaangling  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does vary wildly depending on convenience and how much you do yourself. But from what I know here is an idea.
      1. Fees for a 6 metre boat on dry stack is about £300 a month, in a private yard with launch about £500 a quarter and in a yard with a club about £300 a year.
      2. Suzuki outboard full service with main dealer £330.
      3. Insurance with Porthcawl £220 a year.
      4. Fuel for a Warrior 165 cruising @ 18-19 knots is 1litre per Nm.
      5. Sundries and safety equipment would average out about £200 a year.
      6. Trailer servicing £200 a year.
      Keeping your boat at home and if possible servicing your own engine brings the cost right down but convenience really costs. Add everything up and give yourself a contingency to maintain everything.
      Where I keep mine, having a main dealer engine service, full insurance and maintaining my trailer averages out about £200 a month. I could halve that if I kept it at home but I pay for convenience.

      I regularly see a very nice boat near to mine but it is in a different league with twin 300’s on the back. I was chatting with the owner and at full chat they burn 200 litres and hour. 😲💰
      Charter trips are far more economical for the occasional boat fisher.
