- Bo Burnham is a comedian, actor, musician and director from Boston, Massachusetts. He began posting comedy sketches to TH-cam during the early 2000s. Since then, Bo has gone on to create multiple hour long comedy specials in collaboration with Comedy Central and direct specials for Chris Rock and Jerrod Carmichael. "Eighth Grade" which was released in July 2018 is his directorial debut starring Elsie Fisher.
I keep seeing Bo start going down the "rant" rabbithole, catch himself, apologize. I want to hear that rant in full some day.
Same, I feel he has some really interesting thoughts on social media. Even if he doesn't have the answers, as he says, I'd like to at least hear more of the questions he has about the current situation.
Watch his interview with Douglas Rushkoff. He says all the stuff he can't say here. I am guessing it is because he is stopping himself from bombarding the young people in attendance at this interview.

Im autistic, so ive been seeing patterns and trends for years regarding these things.
It is absolutely heartbreak thinking of kids now on the internet. Without the internet we had more than enough pressure and suffering. Now that is widespread.
Parents post their babies from BIRTH, their toddlers eating ice cream (with 7m saves by pedos), their kids in bikinis, on the toilet, everywhere. Then the kids grow up and post themselves, following the trend, copying celebrities. Damaging their mental health more and more. Opening themselves up to predators because NO adult is stepping in.
The falsity of the social side, the self image side are bad enough, without the millions of predators hopping on there too.
Dont even get me started on porn and how literal children are exposed to the most violent obscure bizzare sex acts before they've hit puberty. Thats horrific. The internet is like one big grooming machine. 'show your body' 'show what you eat' 'everyones watching you' 'heres porn' 'heres a predator'

This is pretty unrelated to the actual subject matter of the vid, but I’m glad that Bo has found a place where he can express himself in a way that doesn’t require putting on an act.
This is the best Bo Burnham interview. Hands down. He’s so unfiltered here and clearly more comfortable in an academic arts setting.
I agree. This interviewer doesn't know what to say sometimes, but she's nowhere as awkward as others I've seen who laugh nervously the whole time or cut him off to ask another question without acknowledging what he said. I felt uncomfortable watching his talk at Google because he had to bite his tongue so much. The VidCon videos and podcast episodes with Pete Holmes are great too.

God you can just see it bursting out of his pores how protective and worried he is for children. When Manhattan came up to ask her question he just turned so soft and supportive. Looking at these interviews and his body of work, I really see him as this single person who feels in a lot of ways victimized by the internet trying to do something, anything he can think of, to stop it from victimizing other kids/teens. I just really believe in his sincerity with that. Bo Burnham for president 2024 lolol
when he said how he hoped a 50 year old man could relate I smiled so big, because the first time I heard about 8th grade I was actually in 8th grade and not into Bo's work at all; I heard of it through my history teacher who was somewhere over 50 y/o
From his last comedy special to his movie , to his current comedy special he just released "inside" its just insane how much he has changed. Its like he got rid of his stage persona he used to have..and I absolutely love it. His new special is literally just insanely raw and just genius. There are almost no words to praise it enough. Even his voice is different. Not to mention his appearance . But its kinda crazy to listen to his old songs compared to his brand new ones its like he even sings better. I love his old material. But his new stuff is to such a whole new level. His talent and the way he thinks

Part of me is so upset I didn’t really get into him until after inside came out, even knowing about him I just didn’t get into him, but I feel like if I had, and had seen his interviews like this one, I would have had such a better idea about what I was doing on the internet. As someone who was manipulated on Snapchat and Instagram and tricked into doing things I didn’t want to, at just barely 16, i feel I could’ve understood better. I’m so grateful for him
Hey, please don't be upset. We are always learning about the world thats around us (reference intended) , and this is just another thing. If you had seen this interview 3 years ago, you would've still been making this comment just about something else you didn't know til this very moment. It is indeed upsetting to think everyone else knew something before you, but that doesn't make you less of a person. You know better now, and now is the most important part of your life. when i say i love bo burnham ofc i do mean his comedy too but it's mostly this. i love seeing someone so passionate, entusiastic, and so obviously genuine about what they're saying it rly is so refreshing to see, he's one of the most articulate people i've ever seen
He's very opinionated about what he saying he's not very articulate. Articulate is speaking clearly and smoothly and getting your pointed cross clearly without a bunch of uh uh uh uh well um you see um uh uh uh. Makes me anxious and uncomfortable to listen to.

This interview was incredible and I LOVED the Q&A part so much. Him getting emotional after the mini rant about snapchat and the people in charge of the internet made admire him so much more than i already do, he is just such a passionate soul. could listen to him for hours. also after watching Inside a lot of the themes in the special can be heard in this interview way before he even made it, so cool
Manhattan? Legend! I totally saw myself in her, I'm a ninth grader myself and she was amazing! I adored seeing Bo treat her like the beautiful and fragile and important human that she is. It was beautiful and poignant and precious.
There are honest, serious topics in this that I love listening to and hearing Bo’s opinions on, but I can’t stop looking at how red his ears are.

I think her initial question was really valid, and I think he answered as honestly as he could which I appreciated. He seemed like he was stalling a little, which is understandable - so many of his other answers have been given in the exact same way in other interviews so this is one he didn't have a pre conceived response to. I don't think either of them did badly in that interaction.

Great interview! Refreshing to watch an interviewer allow organic discussion and permit him to just talk instead of trying to impress him like most interviews.
"I'm suited for this one maybe" Even after the movie was a success he still is questioning himself. So human.
I was really glad to hear the question from the last girl and honestly I'm surprised this is the only interview where I've heard a question like that. Similar to the way that I'm grateful that Eighth Grade and Inside point out issues even though they don't offer solutions - if we're not talking about things like that, we'll never move forward. I appreciated that he didn't seem to be stuck in trying to be politically correct, he answered honestly.
I agree. It was a very pertinent question that she asked. Loved how she brought a poc's voice into the conversation which is often ignored or brushed aside.
Bo is so good at articulating things, he's so intelligent and I think he really cares about us 'Zoomers' in particular due to the weird period of time we're growing up in. Hopefully we can make it better for the generation after us, and hopefully we can help slow down climate change faster than we're currently going about doing that because we're running out of time

@@hannahdonovan6742 Yeah he's great isn't he :) I'm 19 and I saw Eight Grade a while back, rewatched it again recently, and it's so relatable even though I'm a guy and I've now left high-school, I was so awkward in school and I couldn't truly be myself for fear of rejection, despite already being ostracised lol
I'm kinda sad he isn't doing comedy now but I understand why he stopped and I'm so glad he's doing something he loves. He seems happier now.

Damn I’m 14 and that rant Bo Burnham had about social media was so true. I rarely use websites like Instagram, Snapchat, etc. but I see the way it affects other kids and it really is affecting them in the ways that he says. However, I can’t say I completely agree with making the internet illegal to children. Maybe banning things like pornography, etc. would be a better solution.

I felt like I was holding my breath for the entirety of that car scene. Yes, it was ultimately not that bad, but going through it with her was horrifying, not knowing what was going to happen. And I think that's the most important thing that Bo was trying to get across.

@@kaiarun8591 exactly what he said in his answer. It's easier to understand the experiences of women (half the population is women), and he had women help him drive the narrative appropriately. Like he said, part of what he wanted to address was his own toxic masculinity and how it affected the girls and women around him. But it would have been far more difficult for him to truly understand and disingenuous of him to be writing the experiences of a person of color -- especially considering he "grew up as your usual suburbanite. A tiny town in Massachusetts, overwhelmingly white." At that point it just wouldn't make sense for that story to be coming from him.

“PERIOD”
The only solution that I've come up with to the issue that was talked about around 35minutes, is first of all learning to take RESPONSIBILITY of your own feelings, actions and words, so that we don't push them to other people when we get triggered in conversation. That allows people to have constructive conversations without it becoming an automatic battle.
Integrating your ego/shadow is also a important thing to do in my opinion if you want to grow away from the victim-mentality that leads many times into radical actions, out of desperation.
When a person is integrated they no longer see a reason to make others the blaim of ones own issues and feelings, and can calmly and from a place of integrity and genuine care and love, not fear, help themselves and others, and with that the world.
If you're still mentally broken (as in fearful, or seeing yourself as a any kind of victim) you cannot many times have even normal discussions without getting triggered, let alone the important ones. We all have actually lots we can do to fix this problem, but change is a lot to ask from people who are way better in trying to change others but not themselves 😄 Many feel that being "right" is way more important than to try and understand your "opponent" because winning is more important to the ego than the ability to be introspective and honest to yourself and find benefitial solutions to all. Try and learn where you might be WRONG in your opinions, instead of constantly looking for validation and why you are "right". Listen to people. And especially those who you don't agree with.
We need to understand also that there is pretty much nothing beneficial we can do from a place of fear, because that just takes you from the frying pan to the fire, so to speak :D
You cannot think rationally when you're scared, even subconsciously. Also, when you've done the work with yourself you can actually see mentally much further and see solutions you cannot see when you're still in the fear-mode. And the problems that we have, are all pretty much the result of that fear anyway and you cannot find the solution to problems at the same level they were created in the first place.
Responsibility is the key if you ask me, and the first thing you should take responsibility on (that is most helpful to the world and yourself in the long AND in the short run) is your own feelings and thoughts and beliefs.
Question EVERYTHING. And I actually mean every single thing. Especially what you choose to believe in, and think hard do your beliefs bring you more peace, or anxiety. And I invite you to questions all beliefs that bring you anxiety, and drop them unless you cannot find a _peaceful_ reason to belief them.
Find out also WHY you do and want the things you do and want. Get your ego in check, so it doesn't run your life, and teach your heart to take the steering wheel instead. From that place you can start seeing and hearing people PROPERLY, as they are, and not just how you have chosen to percieve them, which is paramount if you want to understand them, and only when you understand someone, can you really change their mind. Not by pushing and screaming to deaf ears, like many are doing now. That only grows the resistance in people, so they hold on just stronger to their opinions.
Many are usually too scared to even try and understand someone or something that thinks or behaves differently then they do, but that is actually a huge trap that some people just can't get over from because they don't want to learn to understand for example """bad people""" (which is actually a myth) and so nothing can really get resolved ever. Only through genuine and voluntary understanding (even towards the harder things, subjects and actions) can you bring any change to a situation.
And I know that I sound like a f*cking Ghandhi here, but the world is not changed with fighting one another. The only way we can change this world is to change and heal ourselves first, and only then are we able to actually help the world.
So don't point fingers and start with yourself 💖

I'm about three years older than bo, and have a 14 year old daughter and I totally agree with him about the way we grew up WITH the internet versus IN the internet. I'm honestly so annoyed with the audience laughing at the serious things he is saying, it's irritating even when he's literally crying. I can't believe he made another "special" after this being funny and singing songs at ALL the devolved into horror and dread. The last girl was mad at him for writing a story about a white girl, but you could imagine the outrage if he'd chosen a non-white protagonist instead. The question was pointless and there is no satisfying people like her. Despite all that, he handled it like an expert.

That last black girl said the word "Cis" so many times and accused Burnham of white washing his move. Hella insulting and just gave off the most annoying vibes.
They watched a piece of art that incredibly specific in scope, didn’t see themselves depicted in the piece of art at all (which they’re all too familiar with) and had a chance to ask the creator why he didn’t include someone that represented her. They could’ve had the question more formed before asking, sure. But nobody was in the wrong here. Bo was honest and transparent in why his movie was overwhelmingly white, which is the only way to answer. We can’t assume the person asking was looking for a “gotcha”, let’s assume the best.

White privilege oozed in the air: views & experiences of most Americans absent. As a white middle class man, his talents, opinions are sought out, listened to with a modicum of reverence and worship. While the Other sits elsewhere waiting his turn that will not come. That is our social structure: there is no luck. Art is governed by mostly white men promoting other white men: a middle class/ wealthy, specific kind of white perspective. Talk about tribal!
A black friend took a music course where he was the oldest most experienced musician; when it came time to award 1000 dollars to the best original tune he thought it was his. A young white man whose piece he considered average won. He confronted the professor in his office, who explained, he had been told to pick the young man. What a lucky guy, eh. As for Bo I suppose one day when Americans stop living in white/ black, rich/poor segregatedd communities, men like him might be more willing to portray the Other. And maybe less art from a group blessed by the results from the injustices of class and race.

@@as54650 I was writing about societal attitudes with him and my friend as examples of its dysfunction. These attitudes have deep roots and need a collective solution. All I do is treat people I meet pretty much as equally as I can -- as if being human is the most important criteria.

I understand your point but at the same time he is very aware of his own hypocrisy as well as his own privilege and his own luck in being int he position he is in. He is unafraid to take the piss out of himself and doesn’t want to be seen as better than others and that’s why yes he is a straight white man but he’s one of the few I would trust with my life.
He chose a person who auditioned. Should they have been a minority I’m sure that wouldn’t change his mind. As he mentioned the school he went to was in a very white area, resulting in white students, resulting in white actors. What you are saying might be true, though none of it applied to bo’s movie
