    i love how mad he gets during the 92nd st Y interview. and it’s interesting because he did his fair amount of “edgy” humor back in the day, but he always tried to make the joke be on the people who are belittling others - for example, playing a dumb homophobic character to show how stupid homophobia is. i feel like he’s understood a lot of those nuances from day one and it makes me love him even more

    • @sarahbearbabygirl
      @sarahbearbabygirl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +457

      @@NoName-rk3ii oh no, i never thought he was homophobic, he would often play the role of his bullies or homophobes in order to make fun of them - and back then one of the worst insults for a teen boy was “fag.” so i don’t believe he’s ever said fag maliciously, but i think he has grown to a place where he has learned how to criticize homophobes and bullies without maybe accidentally traumatizing queer people with the f slur. he’s always come off as a very empathetic person to me

      yes. Like that's where comedians keep failing, it's like MAKE jokes about minorities, but let them be actual jokes instead of just offensive statements.
      I don't want to be some sort of untouchable topic. I want people to be able to make jokes abut "people like me," that I can laugh at because it's actually funny. I don't want "it was a joke" to become this excuse because it makes me seem like I have no sense of humor, like no, you're just not actually making a joke. Make fun of the people putting other down. Make fun of the stereotypes and the stigmas. Make fun of a weird specific thing the group does. Just don't outright make fun of the people over something they can't control.
      James Acaster had a great bit about this on his most recent special. He was talking about how other comedians can say anything they want by claiming others just can't take a joke. He mentioned Ricky Gervais' idiotic commentary about trans people, and retorted,
      "Because you know who has it too easy? Trans people. We really need to knock them off their pedestal, they're getting too comfortable up there. (sarcastically, of course) "
      I laughed out loud! That's a trans joke that acknowledges the current situation, and has the phobes at the butt of the joke. So yeah. Long comment, but I love comedians who subvert stuff like that.

      Bo uses his platform to speak about societal problems and that is a massive two thumbs up. The problem with that is that Bo doesn't want to be an icon and hates celebrity worship/reverence. He has been public about how getting so much attention causes panic attacks (even before he said it in Inside). Not only that, but he finds the relationship between celebrities and their fans very disturbing. For him it's not "get better idols!", it's "don't idolize anyone!". He's very aware of the nuances behind parasocial relationships, which he himself has an strongly ambivalent opinion on; his songs "Can't Handle This" and "art is dead" are the ones, at the top of my head, that delve into that subject.
      ETA: also "Repeat Stuff" I completely forgot the most aggressive song about this lmao!

Because his jokes show how the racist, misogynistic, sexist, homophobic and just shitty people act and uses these jokes to show us how wrong these opinions are. fuck man. The stuff at 8:50. You can tell the audience and the host.... don't know how to react. They're like ".... should I laugh what's happeneing" and you can tell that Bo is being serious about it all and saying some real shit, but then I think I kinda see him feel the sort of uneasy energy so he says a joke and everyone laughs at it and the energy is reset to a more upbeat interview. Honestly it just reminds me of socko.

    I love the way how in Inside with “White Woman’s Instagram” he dissects and reflects the surface and shrinks the frame to demonstrate this like show and tell, and the expands the frame in the middle break to expand the whole story of the individual and all that is being lost in ideological thinking and encouraging that complex voice forth whilst also living and displaying his own complexities in other songs. He’s humanitarian to the max and doing the best that he can with his white male privilege. Highlighting the ways we need to zoom in to zoom out and zoom out to zoom in. And how no part can be skipped in order to truly empathise and truly be compassionate. Everyone is trying to work through something from their own unique and valuable position in the world and we all only have one life during which to do it, lest we rely upon fundamentalist narratives that inhibit our ability to display and enact our humanity. Brilliant.
