My favorite is my Makita x2 weed whacker; no gas and oil mixing, no spark plugs, no choke, no air filter, no carburetor rebuilds, no bulb pumping, and no rope pulling! Sitting in the shed all winter has zero effect on it, I put in batteries and start weed whacking immediately -- no more fiddling and adjusting. Another benefit is that it has a reverse button (can't do that with gas), if I accidentally catch some wire or string I hit the reverse button and it untangles itself.

Makita is the shit. I have a 30 year old makita palm sander passed down from my pappy and it still works like a charm.

I bought $650 of 8' x 4' x 3/4" of cheap plywood sheets and none of my usual yards could offer me a cutting service. Faced with trying to cut them all down to size with my crappy and heavy 36 year old Mastercraft circular saw and no bench, plus being 79 years old, I decided the easiest way was to treat myself to this new Makita 6-1/2" lightweight Model DHS 680Z. Throw a few 2" x 4" on the garage floor & DIY. Well folks this little lightweight beauty was a joy to use, Light, quiet, and so fast. It went thro' those 8x4x3/4" boards like a knife thro' butter. With the help of the new Kegg saw guide all on one battery. Had them all sliced in half and turned into various sizes and stacked against the garage wall in a few hrs. Like I was half my age. I see Makita is now pushing a rather special extra thin $8ca circ saw blade that steams thro' wood at double the speed of any other blade. Wow, that sounds too good to be true. Having never used Makita before I for one am now a fan. Any of you folks with hulking great corded saws should try this saw out, you can hold a hunk of wood in one hand and slice it with the other. No need for benches and such, you handle this thing so easily it's unbelievable. Just for fun, I ran a 45 degree chamfer cut down the edge of a 36" 2x4 just holding it in my left hand and using this saw in my right. I intended to sell it after I'd done the job, but it's a keeper now.

had the 6 1/4 blade saw w/4ah battery for about a year now, and its one great little saw. The guys at work first said yea, we had them before and wanted nothing to do with it. They seen me ripping a 16 foot 2 by. They started using it and now i need another. That saw gets use everyday and shows no sign of slowing down.

I just picked up the Makita XRJ04Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Reciprocating Saw. It cuts like it's going through butter. Plenty of torque and power, I was more than happily surprised considering I was comparing it to the NiCd version in a different brand, but it also very closely rated to my Makita corded electric Reciprocating Saw. I liked it so much I ordered one and sent it to my brother.

Great video, I'm a Complete team Teal Makita-holic. I have close to 6 grand in teal, even including my contractor table saw and 10 in crosscut miter saw. However, building cabinets and other woodworking doesn't require most of your top 5. I love the new "black stallions" but my wife would kill me if she found out I bought another drill set (4 sets already). I do agree with the 18v circular saw, amazing tool, use it on sites building decks. you need to get your hands on the little "Mighty Mini" blower. that is probably my favorite in the lineup, small and powerful. I use it for everything, from blowing leaves in the driveway to blowing out my latest scroll saw project (non-makita tool, Excalibur). Keep making the great videos and I'll keep watching while I wait on stain to dry...

The Makita XBU02 cordless leaf blower is quite AWESOME! On the highest speed it really puts a force against your wrist. I can clean my front yard up in just a few minutes because of the extreme power where a corded version took much longer. As with all Makita tools it is very well thought out and well built!

I’m a Dewalt guy myself, but I do love makita also. Very nice tools. Makita focuses a lot on details. I think Dewalt is ahead in the race right now, but u can’t go wrong with Dewalt makita or milwuakkee. I just wish Dewalt would come out with their cordless wood router like makita, man is that a nice and very essential tool to have.

I recently switched from being a 15 year user of Snap-On 18V cordless tools to Makita due mainly to Snap-On continuing to charge a fortune for tools that are no longer made in the USA, old heavy designs, lack power, and crap run times per charge. Yes I know that some of the Makita gear is made in China and some in Japan, but the price is a lot less. And any brand that doesn't clearly say where its gear is made does so because they don't want to be honest and print "made in China" on their product. Another reason for switching over to Makita being that after all this time Snap-On still has bugger all tools in its range. Makita on the other hand has a cordless tool for just about every job I'll ever take on. Hell, the price I payed for four new Snap-On batteries about a year ago would have bought me a Makita three piece brushless combo with two 5 AH batteries and quick charger. Having given the Makita gear a daily thrashing for 10 months now I'm hooked. Comfortable, well designed, plenty of grunt, and impressive battery run times.

    • @claudyfocan731

I have used Makita all my life, A lot of Metabo too.
In Europe Makita will be encountered the most in professional settings. Along with Blue Bosch (professional) Hilti, Metabo and Festool.
Dewalt and Milwaukee are less likely to be seen. I prefer Makita and Metabo, Makita is indeed just the gold standard. And the Germans make good tools! I prefer sponsoring a German company than an overseas one 🤷‍♂️ they are still made in Germany too. (At least the ones I have)
Hilti is the Rolex of tools (basically From the same country too) and if you have to make some serious holes in some shit. Hilti is the way to go.
Festool is nice but overpriced, mainly for woodworking, but they have a lot of very smart and efficient tools made for woodworking. But as an industrial tech/mechanic we don’t do no woodworking. Mainly grinding and bolting shit together or drilling the occasional hole or the damned bolt that broke off bcs the sucker that put it together overtightened it and turning the 20min job in a 2h one.
“Go get the helicoil set, I’m done with this shit.”

The XSH03 Circular saw is a beast. It is the best tool in my extensive collection. Being a contractor it gets used regularly and through some long rips it will switch on the extra power without complaint. One suggestion for any cordless saw, keep extra Diablo blades on hand. Keeping them "fresh" will give you better cuts and longer battery life. It has the best balance of any on the market right now.

I've been using makita cordless tools for over 10 yrs now. In my opinion nothing even comes close when it comes to run time and charge time. I'm still running 10 yr old batteries. I've accumulated 4 chargers and 10 batteries from 2ah to 5ah , they all work and still hold a charge. My newest batteries are about 5yrs old, they're all getting up there in age, but still work great.

My favorite makita tool is probably my XDT12z, although there is a Made In Japan version with a few more settings and choices of colors of the tool that I’d probably like better if I ever bought one. This cordless impact driver is strong enough to take off wheel lug nuts torqued to 80-90 foot pounds. That’s not what this driver was intended to do, but it does great on small screws that have tenaciously rusted themselves in place. The current generation of Honda CR-V has a screw securing the splash shield under the engine, and one out of three goes directly into the subframe. That one Phillips 3 screw inspired me to buy the XDT12, and has saved my butt countless times since then.

Nice review. Enjoyed your view on these tools.
I just received my Makita 18V Drill. The things that were important to me was nice batteries, metal gears and brushless motor. I got the first two but could not justify the cost of the brushless model. The metal gears was more expensive than the others but not so much that I couldn't consider it. I noticed that most of the tools you chose were the brushless models and I think people should be aware of that and that is why the cost is higher.

I like this video. Excellent idea! I have not seen the compact drill you showed nor have I looked at this particular circular saw. I have to admit I kind of like some of Makita's tools. My favorite is probably their TD148D impact driver but I did have to send away to Japan to get it. At the time it wasn't available here in the states. It is tiny but it screams. I got the lime green just to be a bit different. I'm still getting the hang of the DJV181RMJ which is their cordless palm jigsaw. I had to order that from Toolstop in the UK I believe it was but I'm liking it. It kind of gets you a bit closer to your work and I feel like I've got a little more control around corners. I would like to see them really go crazy and develop an 18V 9.0 Ah battery. Maybe they're already working on it. I know the development time on batteries is really long but the whole two battery setup never really appealed to me personally.

I had Makita drill for 30 plus years worn out and I am very happy with this company for years and I purchased a newer one (drill) couple years ago which will be last longer.

Same here. I had the old Makita 9.6v drill from early 90s that outlasted every latest and greatest drill over the time span. But i finally stopped using it last year when the handle broke in half. But mechanically the drill still works fine.

I've somehow never gravitated towards Makita, opting for DeWalt and (later) Ridgid. Now that I need to updated my line up I'm paying closer attention to the details, and I admit Makita even topped Bosch in the list of contenders for a combo kit. Home Depot is running a sale now (as of 11/19) where you buy a drill/impact driver combo kit and they let you choose a free tool to go with it. While I don't particularly need any of the available options, this review certainly helps narrow down the picks. It would be nice to see something on Makita's reciprocating saws, both full size and compact.

    Pretty good selection.
I would swap out one of the drills for the cordless sawzall Recip saw though. It really is handy when on a ladder or in a strange spot. That said i also had the pleasure of trying one of their cordless finishing nail guns and OMG it is so sweet without a giant hose hooked to a heavy loud compressor. Both the nail gun and recip saw are obviously not meant for long time continuous unlike the drills. But like the circular saw they are super handy for that odd cut or nail you have to do on a scaffolding or ladder.
I guess the top 5 would be different for everyone depending on what you really are doing and specializing in. Either way these are some really solid tools/batteries and informative video.

Great video about for the Makita LXT system.
I was wondering if you could do an in depth comparison on the various cordless "ecosystems" of battery packs. As in, what's the difference between Makita, Dewalt, Milwalkee, Ridgid, Kobalt, etc. There have been a few people I've talked to in recent times (last year or two) that are looking at buying their first cordless tool, and I've based my recommendations on my first hand experience with Makita, and some second hand knowledge of other brands. And knowing how much money gets invested in cordless tools, and the cost of switching brands once you're already invested, it would be nice to see a comparison of the various brands in terms of what tools each has (mostly the unique tools like cordless hand vacs or whatnot), and the warranties (i.e. Ridgid's lifetime warranty) and such.

I was an electrical contractor when Makita first came out with their Li battery tools. I had bidded a job installing sump pumps in an apartment complex. Unfortunately the cellars were flooded and to use a standard heavy duty drill (120V) was out of the question. I had one of the old 9,5 NiCad units with 5 batteries. I was able to drill 5 holes on one battery using a 3/4 spade bit. I decided to retire that veteran that I had for 20 years and go Li Ion. I bought the entire set. and got a radio as a bonus for under $900. The set included 3 batteries. The next day I drilled 35 holes one one battery. The second battery powered the flashlite, the third backed up the drill. I was able to complete the job in 2 hours less than before. The savings paid off the investment in just 4 appt. jobs. Did I mention I was working in water? I dropped the drill in a 6 inch pool of muddy water at least 3 times or more on this job. It continued to work. I sent the drill back to Makita to repair and clean for fear the mud had entered the gearbox and was going to wear it out.. I was surprised to find out that it was still under warranty and repaired for free. It is now 12 years later and it continues to work.
The batteries were used in an construction enviorment. I finally after replaced one battery after 12 years of hard work. The dust took out 2 chargers (It was the sheetrockers fault.) The tools are all still functioning well. I wish my body was a Makita brand.

It's scary that I own the three that are not the impact wrenches (don't have an option to work on my car) In my case I also own the DHP481 (euro) which is the XPH07 (us) cordless hammer drill. An absolute beast of a drill, needed for European brick walls. At 5 lbs and one of the most powerful cordless drills on the market, it'll drill a hole in anything. Another one I missed is the new multitool with keyless swapping of attachments.
    Thanks for the top5!
