I love my DeWalt one. My boss has the millwaukee, which does have more power but he's burned up 2 of them this past year. I'm still on the same DeWalt that I bought. I also like the variable trigger much better and the ability to sit it upright on the battery. I hate hate hate the way millwaukee slants their battery which makes it awkward to sit down sometimes when your working in a tight spot

great comparison vid man! I had to do some deep research on the whole Starlock thing. What's the difference between Starlock and Starlock plus/max? so it has to do with size/length/thickness of the blades. the plus/max are bigger, longer, and thicker, and theoretically they would place too much load on the lighter multitools that only use regular Starlock. So they changed up the connection point to prevent oopsies from occurring, and burning out your lighter tool. Of course if you pick this tool up it's irrelevant as it takes all 3 blades. Also apparently the 3d section of the blade puts the load on the heavy metal cylinder of the tool instead of the load being on the blade and the spindle. So safer and stronger, at least in theory. I say theory since I haven't personally tested it, just looked stuff up. But I love the feel and comfort of my new Makita MT. I agree with your recommendation. If you've already invested a ton in another tool, especially one with OIS blades (or Dewalts proprietary stuff), stick with that. If your buying your first one, or looking to upgrade, Id definitely go with the Makita. Starlock seems to be the big one when it comes to compatibility, since most the manufacturers are going in that direction, including Festool. And since Festool does it, it's gotta be good! (jk hehe, but hey Festools are great stuff, just saying).
The majority of my tools are Makita these days. I waited for the longest time for them to come out with a brushless MT to the point that I gave up and went with the Milwaukee 12v; it's pretty great by the way. I don't understand how they are having so much trouble coming up with a multitool that's on par with their other stuff. They keep missing the mark. And why go Starlock! Everyone else has the other style/universal. If you're breaking blade prongs then you're probably using the wrong tool.
Did you go with the brushless M12 or the brushed one? I have an M18, but I wish I got a smaller M12 or something else to give me more control for precision plunge cuts. I agree with everything you said about this Makita starlock. I have Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools as well as Makita 18V tools. I generally prefer Makita because I think they have better ergonomics, which let me get better precision and accuracy with my work, but I think Makita could do a better job with their multi-tools. I want a compact, lightweight and ergonomic OIS multi-tool. I may also check out one of the Milwaukee M12s.
This makes me glad I got the 50, I personally can't see the benefits cost wise, the limiting factor will always be the blades, you hit a nail and it's game over. This literally was just too replace my pad saw.
Well medical cost of using a vibrating tool like the 50 for long term might make you see the benefit. I've heard that people get severe hand problem from using those daily. The 52 is way better in vibrations.

Definitely, and it uses the standard buy anywhere blades. Unlike this stupid design, which uses the "try to find them anywhere if you can" blade design. Of all the things to change on a multi tool, the blade fixing it the last thing you'd touch. Milwaukee seems to excel at this part of their designs. They always look at the most common used fixings and accessories, and then design their tools to accept them. Their M12 mini rotary tool is a great example. It fits 99% of all Dremel accessories, so Milwaukee don't need to make these, as they are already covered.

I'd like to see how this compares to the Milwaukee Fuel multi tool. I'm a Makita guy, but I've been considering getting the Milwaukee and a battery adapter like I did for the framing nailer.
I’ve got the DTM51 and it does what it needs to, but it is bulky and heavy. The 52 doesn’t seem much of an upgrade in that regard. They’re generally not used for extended periods of time so a huge battery shouldn’t be a requirement. Personally I would love to have a small and light multitool with a small battery.
I am still rocking the original makita one with the allen key. I am in the market for a new one, but with the cost of these blades compared to the blades I can buy for like 3 blades for a single dollar, looks like I won't be upgrade to this newest one any time soon.

14:10 - to test the different tools against each other, first take out a new mortgage on your house, then cut the tips off the blades that fit the different skins & tig weld on the same blade to each tools blade. Gonna be pricey but it’s the only way I can think of a test with continuity.
Thank you for the thorough review. I use one of these tools regularly and now a new employee is constantly stealing mine. Time for an upgrade. This model looks like the bees knees.
Well, you saved me a few hundred $$$ with your review. The Makita Australia brochure implies that the '52 WILL take the Universal fitting blades as well as Starlock, but now it looks like its the other way round - basic Starlock will fit OIS tools but not vice versa.
🤔 I bet the guys and gals at makita shit a brick when they see you put a new makita tool review online. Can imagine management saying. This is how you sell tools to the masses!! 😂😂 Brilliant video as always mate. I have the latest brushless dewalt one. The blade changes are a dream. Looking forward to seeing a verses video. Makita and dewalt guy I am. But I think Milwaukee has the best multi tool right now. Stay lucky dude!🤩
I know of people in states who have it, so it's available in some locations. The model number is XMT04. Z means tool only and B refers to a black model.
i know you did this review over 6 months ago but any idea when they bring out a 40v MT ? I always watch your reviews before i consider buying stuff its a good guideline to give you a rough idea of what you maybe purchasing. Thanks for the review(s).
You the first person to acknowledge that these tools are infact expensive to run. Plus they are light duty and its only claim to usefulness is to cut perpendicular to a surface and preferably soft wood or simlar otherwise purchase bosch shares before buying all the blades.
So glad I went with fein a year back rather than wait for this. I'm Makita across the board for most tools other than a few items. That blade change is crap and have stopped to comment there. Starlock but still that pin nonsense? Maybe its a patent with Bosch and Fein having the proper one handed blade change.
I'm on the Makita platform but I have to say that with the notched-out OIS blades, Dewalt's quick release system is the best I've seen. I would rather Makita went down that route and did away with that nonsense pin completely.
@@alexc.239 what a stupid comment!? That would be totally trade and job dependant. Some cuts would require 3 blades in 5 minutes. On the other hand for a DIY’r you’d have the same one for a year. 🙄
sweep is everything with multi tools. My plug in Rockwell goes to 5 degrees and murders 2x4's in seconds. My Makita cordless not so much. But the longer the blade the bigger the swipe and then cuts much faster.
I use the 51 almost daily for cutting and sanding wood and never missed an led light. I usually unplug the leds from all the makita tools i use because they blind me more than they help me xD I like how you can toggle them on and off on the impact drives
Waiting for the 40v version. I invested in the 40v line but all the tools that are coming out are in the 18v line which makes me think I should have gotten the 18v instead...
I have the 51 and its great, the ease of changing the angle of the blade and replacing it easily makes up for no light, plus against the star blades it uses standard blades that are about half the price. With the weight of the battery on one end having a unit that is a bit heavier is a plus because it counteracts the battery weight.
Multi tools bits keep going on sale at my home depot, I'm talking about half price and certain packs, 3 wood blades for 9$ vs 28 $ retail. I buy a lot in bulk when they put them in the clearance, so I think keep using those blade since I have a small stock pile
Any idea why they removed the urethane cylinders stoppers/bumpers in the battery hatch? All my other Makita tools have them and this tool has empty slots for them, but they aren't there.
I have the 50 cause I got a good price and I loves it. The light though, I found to be shockingly bad give the current state of LED light tech, truly pathetic for all the models. They don't list lumens/lux because it would be embarrassing. Great review!
I'm trying to decide between the wired Makita TM3010 with Makita DTM52, I don't need portability and prefer power and longevity. Do you have a recommendation between these two?
Can anyone recommend a brand of star lock blades? The Bosch ones are relatively expensive vs their non star lock multi tool blades. Thanks. I an in UK btw. Just after I bought a Bosch starlpck multitool they brought out a new model which is way quieter, the battery doesn't fet in the way and less hand vibration. 😑
The performance of this tool and the overall ergonomics seem good. With that said, I think I'm not going to buy it because I already have a lot of OIS blades, and, more importantly, there are a lot of options for getting various kinds of OIS blades for relatively cheap both online and at some discount hardware tools in my area (Chicago, USA). I also don't love the fact that you have to remove the blade retention pin when you load the blades. I guess it's not that big of a deal. I own a Milwaukee M18 multi-tool. It was the first multi-tool I've ever owned. I don't really love the ergonomics. It's too long, and because the battery is mounted at an angle, you cannot stand it up on the battery. The M18 batteries are a lot bigger and heavier than Makita 18V batteries, which makes the tool heavier and awkward to hold. I only use multi-tools as precision tools. I used one last weekend to cut out a rectangle in a builtin wall cabinet at my mother-in-law's house to install a low-voltage wall plate with an ethernet jack. In these applications, I want my cut lines to be precise and clean. I don't need my multi-tool to be very powerful. I want it to be lightweight and short so I can get a good grip close to the blade and control the cut as much as possible. Since it's really easy to overcut corners with multi-tools, I like to plunge-cut a bit further from the corners and then finish these kinds of cuts in the corners with a thin hand saw. For my wall plate, I used Milwaukee's compact hack saw to cut the last 5mm at the corners, and I was very happy with my results on this little job because my cuts were very precise. Milwaukee's blade loading system is actually really good. They use a lock lever plus a screw-down pin that doesn't drop out. You just unlock the lever, loosen the screw a bit by hand, pull out the OIS blade if it has an opening on the end, and then reverse. I think it's just as fast as starlock. But the weight of the M18 tool and the ergonomics during operation aren't great. I want a multi-tool that's lighter and shorter than my M18 with a better grip. I want a brushless motor with some good anti-vibration control to make it easier for me to precisely guide the tool along my cut lines. I think I'll probably just wait for either Milwaukee to release a more-compact M12 brushless multi-tool or maybe for Makita to release an OIS version of this tool with some small improvements.
You can get an adaptor now for this Makita to run OIS blades. I will be doing a review on it shortly. You may also be interested in this Multi-tool comparison th-cam.com/video/UEws-gbUUhk/w-d-xo.html
@@homemadelemonade976 I own Makita stuff but the milwaukee multitool looked great so i had to buy it and love using it. when this came out it looked better than the other models after having the dtm150 which was very noisy and broke after 6 months. decided to buy this new one out of curiosity but doesnt beat the milwaukee
Many thanks, I own the DTM50, great tool, the DTm51 looks awful. wish they made a DTm52 without the starlock.. One thing that I wish I could change is my DTM50, the Allen key drops out of its holder constantly... I may try and fashion a magnet to it someday..
Why make a product with starlock plus more exspensive blades and dont use the same atachment as the festool it looks like the old way of conecting the blades is faster and cheaper
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL Since Bosch is quite evidently in the business of selling consumables and not power tools, I would not be suprised if they were incentivising the use of their patents vs collecting patent pennies. Makita is implementing a hybrid of Starlock and the previous Fein pin mechanism (neither of which are noticeably faster nor slower than the other in real world use) and the Starlock trademark is right on the tool. It could be that it's cheaper to make, it could also be a design decision based on user feedback. The toolless starlock mechanism is not "all that". It's more of an obstacle when you need to angle the blade but you are not quite sure what angle you need it at until you get there. It's a lot easier to move the blade around to each setting before locking it in with the pin than dealing with the toolless clamp mechanism. I hope I'm making sense.
Everything looks good except for the pin that holds the blade in place. 2/3 step process is really annoying. Might as well stay with the 51 than upgrade to 52. Luckily I have both Makita and Bosch cordless system, so I'll be going with Bosch cordless oscillating with this one. Sorry Makita better think of a better way of locking the blades in place.
I wish I could find the DTM50 (XMT01) in the United States. I don't like the 02 at all and I don't like the price of starlock blades for "rough work." I do have the Bosch GOP 30 starlock corded model.
Is that a rebar tool in the background? Tools is teasing us with the big money makita stuff now!?!?! 🤣 Cheers and as always thank for this review. I will be purchasing this when it comes out in the states. The 03 model kinda sucks.
It's exactly the king of multitools like makita impact, but unfortunately it doesnt have very quick system changing blades as dewalt has or it requires a unique one
We have several DeWalt multi tools in boxes that are basically unused at work because they require the special blades with open backs, which is a limited selection. DeWalt also doesn't make very good blades in my experience. Says "made in China" on the back.
I still perfer Bosch multi tool. Slim enough and great grip. I used to have makita old Multi until I use Bosch one. Multi tool is handy to small area job so the narrow head is very important
Your best bet on comparing all of the multi tools is the starlock blades. I think the only one it won't fit in is the DeWalt. But the dewalt comes with a little plate and screw that fits in the bottom of the blade holder. Its not ideal and theres no "teeth" to lock the blade in so tighten the hell out of it.
The DeWalt is good but for heavy use it vibrates way too much. I have the dm51 and it isn't awkward to hold at all like he says, it's comfortable, solid and absorbs so much more vibration than the shitty DeWalt.
they are charging £200 for this in the uk, the dtm51z costs £115. A huge price increase and no blade in the box and a poor blade change mechanism compared to the fein. Makita haven't announced a corded version of this so far, i wonder whether they will release one, it would make the rear narrower. The newish milwaukee 18v and 12v have low vibration and a higher ~4.0 degrees cut. Would be great to see a side-by-side comparison of those compared to this new makita to see the noise level and vibration comparison and also cut speed although i'm pretty sure milwaukee will cut faster.
It's literally using a Fein mechanism. There are big cons to the toolless starlock clamping mechanism. It depends on what you use it for, however. I'm happy for toolless starlock when I'm burning through scraper blades. I'm cursing at it when I'm in a cupboard, making a cutout and am fighing with the starlock mechanism while trying to set the right angle.
@@robertrada6040 Exactly. My Fein has the same pin and lever mechanism. And I bought it years ago before multitools were everywhere. It's not a new thing.
The starlock max blades are longer. I’ve got the Bosch 18v which only takes starlock plus and there have been a couple of times when those blades didn’t reach where I wanted to go. Would have bought the Mkaita 52 if it had been out.
I've got it too and have the same problem. Now that Fein, Festool and Makita all have starlock max cordless tools, I hope Bosch GmbH get their shit together and come out with their own starlock Max cordless. Perhaps with the biturbo motor, that would blow everyone else out of the water. It's not like they couldn't...
Another interesting tool review bro! I'm Makita tools mainly. But hated there multi tool so I went with the new Milwaukee M12 anti vib multi tool. It's light and small and very grunty for a 12v tool. Beats my dad's Dewalt 18v. Also it has a magnet to hold the blade on while changing blades. That new makita looks rather clumsy to be honest.
It is only a matter of time until generic starlocks start appearing. Once that happens, I'll probably replace mine. Until then, obviously sticking with the old style. I mean really this is a fairly niche tool for me so the couple of complaints the new one fixes aren't that big a deal.
OMG, you did it. Now order the cordless Fein with Fein battery, the Cordless Fein branded as Festool with the Festool battery, the Bosch with the Bosch battery and the new Fein with Bosch Battery that was just announced. POST VIEW EDIT: It seems more powerful than the Fein/Festool.
I'm not on anyone's payroll yet unfortunately, the best I can hope for is that a tool company will lend me a tool for a couple of days. 2 days ago Makita lent me a tool for the first time!
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL If it makes you feel any better. You are the reason that I’m slowly selling off my LXT collection that I literally jumped into around 2019. It was nice having everything on one battery platform during the 2020 pandemic when there was nothing to do but play Nintendo. 🤣
I didn't get a blade :(. Paid $240 out the door with our 25% sales tax here in Norway. I also saw that there was some dust extraction solution in the manual. My old 51 model came with a triangle sanding pad and dust extraction solution. New one did not.
Makita are useless when it comes to OMTs. I was hoping this one could be the reason I drop my Bosch for a Makita but with that pin out design It's no better than the older models. Sure it performs a little better but you have to pay more for the starlock blades without gaining the benefit of quick change like Bosch, Fein and Festool etc.
Tbh I just brought fein blades as they are cheaper than the bosch ones, was between buying the makita and the fein omt but I couldnt be bothered with another battery platform so have the 52 🤷🏼♂️😅

Brilliant video as always mate. I have the latest brushless dewalt one. The blade changes are a dream. Looking forward to seeing a verses video.
Makita and dewalt guy I am.
But I think Milwaukee has the best multi tool right now. Stay lucky dude!🤩
If you think Milwaukee's OMT is the best you haven't used the best on the market.
In the States, the model number is XMT04ZB. It does not seem to be available at the moment.
I know of people in states who have it, so it's available in some locations. The model number is XMT04. Z means tool only and B refers to a black model.
Wirst cutting joke - I would have been disapointed without it. Good review, just ordered it.
I’m with you, grinder for nails and screws
I have owned the DTM51 for around 5 years and never noticed it didn’t have a light just got a torch probably my phone light.
nice review! bummer it only fits those expensive starlock blades...
didnt you sell the blue xgt impact?
Yes. Borrowed one for this test.
i know you did this review over 6 months ago but any idea when they bring out a 40v MT ?
That pin! 😡😡
It costs a shit ton of money to license the quick change starlock . So thats probably why.
I'm on the Makita platform but I have to say that with the notched-out OIS blades, Dewalt's quick release system is the best I've seen. I would rather Makita went down that route and did away with that nonsense pin completely.
But how often do you change the blade to make such big of a difference? 🙄
Permanent marker works great
Waiting for the 40v version. I invested in the 40v line but all the tools that are coming out are in the 18v line which makes me think I should have gotten the 18v instead...
well the 40V is mainly for more powerful tools, a lot of tools will remain in 18V line, think about get a 18V battery and charger.
Great. I ordered DMT51 several month ago and it was on backorder until last week... And now I find they have DMT52 :D
I have the 51 and its great, the ease of changing the angle of the blade and replacing it easily makes up for no light, plus against the star blades it uses standard blades that are about half the price. With the weight of the battery on one end having a unit that is a bit heavier is a plus because it counteracts the battery weight.
I also have the 51 and, despite the lack of light, will be sticking with it.
Definitely gonna need all 3 for the job site
Multi tools bits keep going on sale at my home depot, I'm talking about half price and certain packs, 3 wood blades for 9$ vs 28 $ retail. I buy a lot in bulk when they put them in the clearance, so I think keep using those blade since I have a small stock pile
Any idea why they removed the urethane cylinders stoppers/bumpers in the battery hatch? All my other Makita tools have them and this tool has empty slots for them, but they aren't there.
Probably because the whole battery mount area has suspension for battery protection.
Is it actually quieter, or is the pitch different (less annoying)?
Can you purchase an adapter so the DTM 52 can use other types of blades?
I know the Fein is a clip on blade and no pin for Starlock, but Bosch developed it with Fein
So glad I watched your review video on these tools, I would have made the wrong choice, Thank you very much.
You are welcome!
Starlock all the way ! 👌💪💪
I use these amzn.to/4dRNehb
Still eagerly waiting for a xgt model
Makita 40v Multi-Tool is Finally here!!! th-cam.com/video/9xkgk_HQvXo/w-d-xo.html
How does it compare to the m18 and the m12?
He did mention doing a test on those in the video soon
It's got less red.
Needs a magnet to hold the blade.
Why is your subcompact OMT teal and not black?
Because they only released them in black in the states. And nobody else in the world calls them subcompact either.
after having tried both this model and the milwaukee fuel m18 i will stick to the milwaukee
Although im a makita guy, makita just didnt get them right. I dont like any of their multitools, and i own the dtm51.
I like the makita 52 but if the blades are going to cost a lot more dewalt would be the answer hey ??
I need this new Brushless to use as a sander ....get into corners and Skirtings etc👌😉
Many thanks, I own the DTM50, great tool, the DTm51 looks awful. wish they made a DTm52 without the starlock..
One thing that I wish I could change is my DTM50, the Allen key drops out of its holder constantly... I may try and fashion a magnet to it someday..
Hi mate, like to see your review. can you please review the multi tool for Cerycose Cordless Oscillating brand?
Dude I just love watching these
Cheers
Why make a product with starlock plus more exspensive blades and dont use the same atachment as the festool it looks like the old way of conecting the blades is faster and cheaper
It may be a patent issue.
With OIS you are limited with blade length because the pins can't take it and shear off, this is why Starlock and others were invented.
Question is which blade style is more common? That’s a big factor in which tool to invest in.
Surely you could make an adapter for the 52 to take ois blades?!
They do but it then you need an allen key to change the blades.
Will they make a 40v version? I am thinking of going into the 40v line since I don't have any but I do want a multitool.
They will make a 40v of just about everything... eventually...
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL yes I do know that but have they said anything? Or any mentions of the next set?
10:20 tip use the whole blade you wont ware as much. These blade are expensive at least here in sweden
Can’t wait for xgt tools
Great video 💥👌🖐
Would love the 152, but more than double the price of the 151 in the UK!
I wish I could find the DTM50 (XMT01) in the United States. I don't like the 02 at all and I don't like the price of starlock blades for "rough work." I do have the Bosch GOP 30 starlock corded model.
the DTM50 is actually the XMT02. The 51 is the 03 and the 52 will presumably be the 04.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL well, naming aside, I still would like to find that original model.
New makita one looks good, but star lock blade is so expensive. I am gonna keep my second generation makita multi tool.
Any news on a xgt multi tool?
Yes, very, very soon.
Is that a rebar tool in the background? Tools is teasing us with the big money makita stuff now!?!?! 🤣 Cheers and as always thank for this review. I will be purchasing this when it comes out in the states. The 03 model kinda sucks.
Yes yes it is
It's exactly the king of multitools like makita impact, but unfortunately it doesnt have very quick system changing blades as dewalt has or it requires a unique one
Yeah I have already purchased a bunch of fein starlock blades and checked them on the tools... bloody dewalt.
I have a shop in back of my house as well. My wife says if i had a bad in my shop they would never seen me😂
The starlock max blades are longer.
Starlock etc was invented because with long blades the pins shear off OIS system.
Will be lucky to get this in USA in 2025!
How’s the tool going ? Good reliable ?
I'm loving it.
Excelente explicação, parabéns 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

You can now buy an adapter that lets you use the old blades on a starlock tool!!!!!
Review soon...
I can’t find this tool any where
Another interesting tool review bro!
I hope they release a non-starlock version of this tool. I like everything but the blade requirement.
You won't rest until I'm broke.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL We got this: Cop Box Belt Tools said that the check's in the mail.
With you on that one mate 👍. Got loads of makita. but always avoided the multi tools.
Tbh I just brought fein blades as they are cheaper than the bosch ones, was between buying the makita and the fein omt but I couldnt be bothered with another battery platform so have the 52 🤷🏼♂️😅
@@TantonJS And better than the Bosch ones...
I like Makita usually but I feel like they have been dropping the ball over the past few years compared to other companies.
Kohenda tiyena sorum.

a little disappointed that it doesn't use the same blade changing mechanism as Bosch.
