James from Freakin Reviews is really good for unbiased opinions and reviews as well and he’s a great bloke. But this guy is next level for the sheer amount of physical work he puts into these tests and clever editing and production of his videos. He gets loads of views and he deserves them all.

@UsirRaMaroon Is the knock off claiming to be a Makita? is it using any patents without license? If so, I agree. If it is just a generic product my only question is if it is a better value.
Good engineering for the Makita to use a much heavier anvil, more material for the body for strength but still have essentially the same weight as the knock off. Also very good engineering and production efficiency (and probably the removal of QC) to be able to make a decent tool at $30 and still make it worth it to the company who makes it!

Except all these tests are majorly flawed because no one takes longevity into account, thats why Aldi tools perform better than Makita, for about 2 weeks then therye fucked lol.
That torque measuring device is a work of genius. I've seen tools like that on other channels but never understood how they worked. Now, seeing your video it's so clear to me. Great video and amazing job coming up with these tests.
I have the cheap version and to be honest as a 'home workshop' tool its fantastic value, it does what it does well and saves a huge amount of time which is its main attraction for me. Sure the Makita (and other good brands) will be better but its hard to justify the price difference since I will probably get years of service from my cheap one and I have the extra 'seconds' to wait to spool up the nut... As always a fantastic video, I would never have thought to put them actually head-to-head but what a test that was, I think you're scientific enough and real world enough to make your comparisons so very useful.. Love your work.. and I love your sense of humour too...
i would like to report that i am using the cheap knockoff since 2 years and it still works. Feels like it even gained a little more torque after a break in episode. I will need a propper one soon though as it was an eye opener regarding how often i use this.
I believe the industry terms are actually 'break force torque' vs 'drive force torque' but most power tool consumers in the USA being young adult males, marketing happens.

I've an idea that I haven't seen before (or at least found): Hand Cleaners I work on motorcycles and constantly get mucky hands due to the Carbon, Rust and Associated Particles. I tend to use Swarfega but don't care what flavour, my firend uses swarfega but ONLY the orange one ("Because it's got citrus in it, which is, like, an acid isn't it!"), I know some people just use Fairy Liquid (dish washing liquid in the UK) and my dad is more old school and uses normal soap, then vinegar if that doesn't do it, then 99.9% Isopropyl as a last resort. I'm sure no matter what tools or projects people do then wanting shiny clean hands without taking a layer off is something we can all relate to :D P.S. Best trick I've ever actually seen played on a newbie mechanic - tell them they can avoid all the mess if they spray some lube (WD40, GT85, etc.) on their hands first. "Really coat it on there good as a barrier." It's mean, but watching them play grab-the-spanner is hillarious. Even worse, they then have to try and wash off the WD40...

Smearing some vasiline / petroleum jelly on your hands & arms works great, it quickly dries or soaks in & you're not all slippery-. Good for painting also..

At the end of 2020 this video made me buy Cousin Eddie, and there's still no regret whatsoever. The battery lasts very long, because the hammering is a very efficient method of power transfer. I keep being amazing by the speed and power, compared to a conventional drill. You must be very careful with smaller bolts and screws, because they'll break before you can say "whoops', but for undoing screws, nuts and bolts, and tightening bolts and nuts beyond 5 mm (1/4" and up) it's an awesome tool with a ridiculously low weight.

I don’t blame him for not showing his face. Plus, not revealing his face doesn’t diminish the quality of his YT content in any way.
Long term review of my Cousin Eddie (appears mostly identical to the one in the video - even down to the yellow trimmed brushless motor, except mine was a ball detent model). The unit is still performing well - ordered May 2020 (a month before this video went live!), review date 2/13/2023. Used for weekend automotive work on my daily driver cars - mostly suspension components and lug nuts, and it still works the same as when new. Occasional drops from a short height with a 5ah battery, no cracks or stress marks/deformations in the shell. It seems to max out at about the same in the video - between 90 to 115 ft lbs, even after years of weekend use. About a year in, the detent ball disappeared and was never seen again, so I've been holding the sockets on as-needed. Shortly after that, the hammer seized up. A quick disassembly of the forward cap and gentle persuasion resolved the issue and the unit worked fine after reassembly. A year and a half after that (a week ago, actually) the four screws holding the forward cap on came loose, so I partially disassembled the unit again and did an inspection. Everything was still greased up and looked/worked great. Threw some threadlocker on the screws and reassembled it. I've used this for: frequent tire rotations, regular suspension replacements, an engine replacement/teardown/reassembly, a transmission replacement, and regular maintenance when there's enough room. Because of the limited torque, on higher torque fasteners like axle nuts or front control arm bushing nuts, I would sometimes have to break them loose by hand. On one occasion I had to use a strangers high torque Milwaukee in a junkyard to remove the axle nut on a CV axle still installed in a spindle off-car. Sometimes Cousin Eddie (and even my breaker bar) struggles on other bolts in mostly rust-free junkyard cars. I was wanting a bit more removal torque for those rare occasions, so I went ahead and ordered an authentic Makita impact that is smaller/lighter but is rated at more torque than Cousin Eddie has tested out to. But, considering Cousin Eddie was about $40 shipped and provided almost 3 years of use before I wanted something better, I'd say it was definitely worth the money. Not bad, Cousin Eddie.
@@Mr_Sokoll yes and no: Yes, for less intensive and lighter use it would do the job too, but bit slower. No, for harder works this "couple" Nm REALLY makes the difference. PS visually they are quite similar. But technically they must be (price) and are quite different. Retail prices of Makita li-ion cells would be like 10-15$
$30 for a brushless motor is incredible value and for the casual DIYer it might just do the trick. On the other hand the Makita is definitely for the professional tradesman who will use this tool on a daily basis and get a good service life out of it.

I have the Titanium from Harbor Freight. For $180 that thing is great. My stick welder is an Amico, so if he tests cheap welders I hope he'll include one of those.

@@kiiiisu The thing I would concern most is battery. Sure you can replace cells but it would change price dramatically. Or maybe... I unscrewd 8 stubborn bolts with "Grsphite" tool, untill counter screw broke. I unscrewd them all with Makita. Cheaper Bosch brand broke after one bolt.
Great tests.. You have a good point on the 30 dollar tool. It's 5 times less than Makita, but is Makita also 5 times better? If so the 30 dollar knock off is not bad actually. It could get someone going until they can upgrade to something more durable.
We bought the same knock off impact wrench for $30 on ebay too, we're happy with it. Dad got it to change the shocks on the Cherokee and to do tire rotations when needed, it works fine for what we use it for. If you're going to use an impact wrench a lot go with the Makita, but if you're only going to need the wrench a couple times a year the knock off will do just fine, but hey, it's your money.
Oveida Sinclair You must not live near rust. I couldn’t remove the bolts to change out the struts on my car with a 450 ft lb air impact. And that was after I broke them free with a breaker bar.
Man, you've got so many cool testing tools I didn't even know existed. The rigorousness and accuracy of your tests is what makes your channel my favorite!
I would be interested in seeing how a Dewalt and an Earthquake wrench would compare to the Makita. Very good test and really shows the differences between a cheap tool and the real deal.
And the AEG (Ridgid to North America). I've done a few rudimentary comparisons in Australia between AEG and Makita and found the AEG to be damn good value. The cordless tools are almost as good, the corded stuff is actually better, but only 2/3rds of the price and with a longer warranty. Based on that I went with the AEG, and have been super happy. Plus, nobody will pinch them because the other tradies all have Makita and Milwaulkee so the batteries won't fit! Heh.

Sir: I am constantly ever so impressed with your incredibly intelligent, well executed and thorough testing methods and procedures. As a mechanic while putting myself through University, and a retired applied physicist, I am by no means easily impressed, but, again, you certainly earn accolades.
Knockoff is a lamb in Wolf's clothing. It is probably fine for light duty occasional use but not much more. I gotta say tool comparisons are a great idea. Everything you compare has much better testing that everyone else's and as usual with an unbiased opinion. Love the dances BTW. 🙂
i wholeheartedly disagree. is the makita 15-20% better? yes absolutely, but do you NEED that for 300% markup? absolutely not. Given you can have 80% of a makita for 30 dollars, this thing is insanely good and I wouldn't hesitate to buy an arsenal of knockoffs to do the grimy jobs and keep my makita (well actually, my millwalkee) for the serious and precise work where you actually need something beefy. Overall, I don't think we're at a pitstop here, the knockoff can still accomplish a particular job in the same amount of time given you don't pick your nose or wipe your face in that time you save by getting a nut off 2 seconds faster.
ive been running that exact knockoff in my service truck for a little over a year now and it has served me well! Not an issue yet and I need to mention that mobile mechanic work is ROUGH on tools. My makita ends up breaking in 2 years due to cracks, brakekleen etc, and this has almost lasted just as long. For normal use where your tool would last you 10 years, I dont see it lasting as long as the makita, but when you are breaking tools from basically abuse vs lifetime, the cheapy is well worth the money!! Trust me, order one and your makita will sit safe at home in the box for quite awhile, this thing works great
I feel like the knockoff should be good enough to leave at your grandmother's house in case she needs it. Saves money and realistically doesn't need to be too strong.
I have a suggestion for you. You've done showdowns for a lot of different kinds of saw blades and cutting tools. I recently bought an oscillating multi-tool and have noticed that there is a huge price difference between the name brand blades (DeWalt, etc.) and the presumably Chinese knockoff brand blades sold on Amazon. I'd like to see a comparison of these blades to see if the price difference is worth it. Some of your other comparison videos have proven that better brands typically are worth it.
I can say there isn't much difference from experience. The best value you can get with those is buying a nice fine file. I have a dewalt blade in my kit that I've used for years and just file the points back whenever they're dulled. The blades are high carbon steel and you can sharpen them
Now at our local hardware stores they sell cheap blades at the checkout. Instead of 20 dollar dewalt blades and 30-80 dollar fein blades we can now just grab the 5 dollar cheapie without having to order them
deal in comparison to what? Unless you have makita batteries and charger, this thing is useless. If you have adopted makita 18V system, why would you spend $50 on eddy when the makita can be actually had for around $99 and comes with an actual warranty and isn't a safety hazard like eddy?
@Sy Badine Yeah reputable goods are fine, yet a lot of their exports are highly volume based low quality products. Though, since they lack human rights, they can make giant buildings in days, and build trains that go 300mph and balance a penny on it's side
@@enwin1912 A kettle is significantly more dangerous from the electrical side than an impact drill, though. Many things can go wrong with something that's exposed to mains, heats up on purpose and uses conductive liquids.
I love how you give everything fair criticism even when things are not even a competition. That being said I do think it seems to be worth it for 30 at least until you can find yourself able to afford a better one.
Some advice I've seen on mechanic forums say buy the cheaper tool until it breaks, then buy the better one because by then you will know whether or not you actually need the better tool.That advice is aimed more towards DIYers who aren't working with the tools day in and day out.
@@arcanask as a mechanic, I use cheaper tool brands and I have had no issues with then what so ever, obviously not as nice or ergonomic, but i use them daily and they hold up great my favorite brand is Tekton. They are just really great tools
Agree. It is more than fair because it’s brushless, too. A BL-ryobi sets me back more than 150 bucks and it’s a Chinese brand too. If someone can afford it he or she will buy the makita anyway. I remember the cheap Chinese tools from 25 years ago. They sucked and were in no case worth buying. This has luckily changed.
That drill is a fire waiting to happen i wouldn't sleep at night if it had battery inserted... No fuse in the housing, cheap no brand switch (The Mikita is Omron, one of the best names in switches), And no battery ground (again, FIRE). I would never buy that drill. Id get a 50 dollar Ryobi before that. At least if that burned down your house you could sue Ryobi, Who you gonna sue if the fake Makita burns down your house? Yourself??

Also it's not like your getting a battery with the fake cheap Makita, those are 62$ for a 2AH shitter, BEFORE you get a charger. Not to mention the inevitable house fire your gonna have on your hands when that drill goes up in flames. there's NO battery ground and NO in-housing fuse. The switch is also complete shit and will probably stop working the second you squeeze it hard. STAY AWAY!!! this is for peasants, serfs, and Instagram influencers who want to post a picture of themselves 'doing work'.
The knock-off tool only has two battery contacts, they skipped the temperature sensor. This could result in reduced lifespan or damage to the battery. The effects would be worse on lower capacity battery packs too.
@@mrfrenzy. Buddy, the whole tool including batteries is a fraction of the cost of a genuine one, just buy another whole kit! Or order a shed load of cheap batteries direct from China.
Thanks. After viewing this video, I was amazed by the cheap impact wrench. Went ahead and bought one. Cannot be happier with the performance/cost ratio. Excellent for mower blade removal/mounting. Effortless! The 1/2" center is hollow. It takes hex-base bits. An impact driver for me. Cool. I don't expect it to be used on a daily basis and long lasting. Great for a casual DIYer.
@@hpw-ws6bj , yes! i'm fussy about adapters. i bought a milwaulkie but the way it operated was a bloody nuisance. so i bought a ryobi adapter. i had to buy some tungsten carbide drill bits to carefully drill a hole in the side of it (its hardened steel) to accept a pin to make it semi-permanent.
This was a great test, if you combined your testing with AvE's tool breakdowns, there's no way you couldn't make a more informed purchase decision. One thing to note is cousin eddie doesn't have a battery thermal cutout pin to shut the tool down. Other than that, for $30 you can't go wrong if you use the tool sparingly or want to throw one in your car/truck and don't care if it gets damaged or stolen.
Mikhail Akbashev AvE has a far more comprehensive tool breakdown but the performance testing here is better and more relatable to what a regular joe will use the tool for.
~30 bucks for such a useful tool is actually quite a good price. As long as you don't expect it to last through heavy and regular use, it's surprisingly useful. A nice, cheap tool to have laying about in the shed/garage for occasional use. Better that than an expensive tool you rarely use. Reliability and durability is the most important part. Power can always be found cheaper, so it's not a defining factor. So.. if it is a tool one needs to have working any time it is pulled out (even if it is rarely), then the expensive and original option is the way to go. If just a tool that is nice to have, but not really important, the knock-off.
That's how I feel about Harbor Freight, if I use their tools enough to actually break them, the extra money for a major name brand tool will be worth it.

Jordan Bailie why would you use a impact driver to put a bed together all u need is a screw drive or socket set if ur lazy an electric screwdriver will be just fine. Impacts are for lug nuts, frame bolts, construction etc.....for $30 you could replace it almost 5 times a year for price of one real impact, bargin value
I'm bemused by the absolute blind spot of comments here ignoring that PF is using a Makita battery and charger for the eddy, since Eddy does not come with a battery or charger. Check the $50 eddy's on ebay and they all do not include a battery or charger, they say for "Makita battery". The premise is simply wrong here. If the eddy is perfect for the average home owner, then the average home owner has adopted the Makita battery, which is not the case. There are plenty of inexpensive impact wrenches with battery and charger with an actual company behind those products, than the combination eddy + makita battery and charger. Moreover, not sure the average home owner with minor projects needs an impact wrench.
The dance-off was hilarious! Seriously though, I always wanted an impact wrench but I didn't want to pay the money for it. The $30 knockoff is probably worth it in my opinion because I don't think I'll use it impact wrench that often.

Absolutely. Certain tools you just don't need to use that often. My drill press was about $45 from China - I'm still using it 15 years later. Granted, I don't need it often, but I've certainly got my money's worth out of it. If it ever fails I can afford a better one now but until it does there's no need to replace it.
Great job on the video, I have 2 makitas and 0 knock offs. They have worked flawlessly for years. One is brushless and the other is not but it still has worked great.
I have that model (Makita 6012hd) and just recently got a battery for it on amazon. What a difference to modern drills haha. I still try to use it time to time just because it was my grandpas and she still runs good. Battery was a no name and only $20.
I really appreciate your video's and the work you go through to make them happen. As for Cousin Eddy.... I would absolutely buy a him. The amount of work he can still do is fantastic and I would welcome him into my garage any time. Makita is a very good tool but for the quantity of work i do, Cousin Eddy is just fine.
Finally someone tested the dance moves of a cordless tool. I don't care about quality or performance just dance moves. Well maybe dance move are just a funny test mode.
Brilliant review comparrison, just purchased a cousin Eddie & I love it for the £40 uk price which is excellent in the current COL crisis & it includes 2 batteries & a case! I will only be using it mainly to remove car wheels as a DIY mechanic & didn't want to spend on an expensive tool for the job
Most electrical powered tools have more torque in their reverse gear. It's because of a different gear ratio for the reverse gear. More torque, less revs.
I disagree. Even well known brands can stop working at some time and if Chinese impact wrench will stop, you can afford three more of them before you can afford Makita. If Makita will stop working and you'll buy a new one, you can have eight of them.
@@potatolord5827 I have similar experience with our local well known tools. But with the ones which were made really 20 years ago. Not nowdays. Many parts made of metal were replaced by plastic and are not so durable. I also have some bad experiences with warranty. Cheap tools are ok, you'll get new one without a word (not talking about Wish and Aliexpress,...) but premium brands are not always so happy about complains. They are trying to negotiate, blame you for wrong use, reapair as little as possible. So I will hold my opinon for now - it's easier to buy 4 (quite powerful and good) copies than one original.

I was recently faced with the same dilemma and ended up getting the Makita! I rationalized that someday i may really need a torque wrench for other purposes and holding on to that $30 piece of garbage for years does not sound appealing!
I've bought cheap air powered ones and they are worthless most of the time because they can't break the lug nut loose causing you to have to use the lug wrench anyway. I don't even bother to get it out anymore when changing tires/wheels.

@@ProjectFarm If you do decide to build things one day use good tools! Makita is the brand I buy because of the range of tools and the quality/price they exhibit. There are better more robust tools available but the cost stars to get rather much higher and I am not a professional working 8 hours a day 5 days a week with my tools so Makita is definitely a good choice for me.
Because you respect things done with quality. It’s hard to not be interested in something done well. Just like me watching a master chef cook preparing something. I don’t know anything about the culinary arts but can respect the effort.
old greybeard tip i learned: scratch lines on the outside of your sockets at the points of the hex, you can line up the driver to get it in first time. Don't try this in the bedroom, it ends with stripped nuts.
TRUTH! When I was younger, I could only afford the budget versions. But, I tell ya, nothing replaces quality! This wouldn't be a bad back-up, but def wouldn't be my primary tool.
@@zwz.zdenek A good example would be the difference between a cheap $25 garden hose vs. a $45 one. Both will get the job done but you will constantly fight the cheap one to straighten it out of its coiled state and prevent kinks everytime you use it where as the $45 hose will immediately come out of its coiled state as soon as you remove it from the packaging and won't kink. So yeah the $25 hose is cheap and you can then go out to eat with the money you saved but you will pay for it with your sanity every time you use that junky $25 hose. After a few times you'll see that the $20 difference wasn't that expensive after all.
Hey Todd, not sure if you've seen, but there's a bigger and badder cousin eddy they recently released that's much bigger and claims to have 1800N*M of torque. Might be a fun comparison for one of the bigger makita impacts.
@Dan Harold: I agree. You could very well have a situation where the electric beats air with a 1/4” hose but air with 1/2” hose is times better then electric. How do you know whats fair? 1/4” hose, 3/8” hose, 1/2” hose, everything between say 90 & 200 psi, water separator vs no water separator, in-line Oiler vs no Oiler, standard air hose quick connects vs high flow quick connects vs industrial quick connects, compressor size/capability, tank size, and every possible combination of each.. Filming all of this would easily take days.
@@danharold3087 My experience with quick connects went like this: I have a Sears Companion impact gun that would not take lug nuts off my cars. I assumed it was the gun's fault until one day, I saw some quick connects at HF (I think the label said automotive quick connects). I bought them and then I had no problems removing lug nuts.

@UsirRaMaroon Is the knock off claiming to be a Makita? is it using any patents without license? If so, I agree. If it is just a generic product my only question is if it is a better value.
Good engineering for the Makita to use a much heavier anvil, more material for the body for strength but still have essentially the same weight as the knock off. Also very good engineering and production efficiency (and probably the removal of QC) to be able to make a decent tool at $30 and still make it worth it to the company who makes it!

Except all these tests are majorly flawed because no one takes longevity into account, thats why Aldi tools perform better than Makita, for about 2 weeks then therye fucked lol.
That torque measuring device is a work of genius. I've seen tools like that on other channels but never understood how they worked. Now, seeing your video it's so clear to me. Great video and amazing job coming up with these tests.
I have the cheap version and to be honest as a 'home workshop' tool its fantastic value, it does what it does well and saves a huge amount of time which is its main attraction for me. Sure the Makita (and other good brands) will be better but its hard to justify the price difference since I will probably get years of service from my cheap one and I have the extra 'seconds' to wait to spool up the nut... As always a fantastic video, I would never have thought to put them actually head-to-head but what a test that was, I think you're scientific enough and real world enough to make your comparisons so very useful.. Love your work.. and I love your sense of humour too...

i would like to report that i am using the cheap knockoff since 2 years and it still works. Feels like it even gained a little more torque after a break in episode. I will need a propper one soon though as it was an eye opener regarding how often i use this.

I work on motorcycles and constantly get mucky hands due to the Carbon, Rust and Associated Particles. I tend to use Swarfega but don't care what flavour, my firend uses swarfega but ONLY the orange one ("Because it's got citrus in it, which is, like, an acid isn't it!"), I know some people just use Fairy Liquid (dish washing liquid in the UK) and my dad is more old school and uses normal soap, then vinegar if that doesn't do it, then 99.9% Isopropyl as a last resort.
I'm sure no matter what tools or projects people do then wanting shiny clean hands without taking a layer off is something we can all relate to :D
P.S. Best trick I've ever actually seen played on a newbie mechanic - tell them they can avoid all the mess if they spray some lube (WD40, GT85, etc.) on their hands first. "Really coat it on there good as a barrier." It's mean, but watching them play grab-the-spanner is hillarious. Even worse, they then have to try and wash off the WD40...

At the end of 2020 this video made me buy Cousin Eddie, and there's still no regret whatsoever. The battery lasts very long, because the hammering is a very efficient method of power transfer. I keep being amazing by the speed and power, compared to a conventional drill. You must be very careful with smaller bolts and screws, because they'll break before you can say "whoops', but for undoing screws, nuts and bolts, and tightening bolts and nuts beyond 5 mm (1/4" and up) it's an awesome tool with a ridiculously low weight.

I don’t blame him for not showing his face. Plus, not revealing his face doesn’t diminish the quality of his YT content in any way.
Long term review of my Cousin Eddie (appears mostly identical to the one in the video - even down to the yellow trimmed brushless motor, except mine was a ball detent model).
The unit is still performing well - ordered May 2020 (a month before this video went live!), review date 2/13/2023.
Used for weekend automotive work on my daily driver cars - mostly suspension components and lug nuts, and it still works the same as when new.
Occasional drops from a short height with a 5ah battery, no cracks or stress marks/deformations in the shell.
It seems to max out at about the same in the video - between 90 to 115 ft lbs, even after years of weekend use.
About a year in, the detent ball disappeared and was never seen again, so I've been holding the sockets on as-needed.
Shortly after that, the hammer seized up. A quick disassembly of the forward cap and gentle persuasion resolved the issue and the unit worked fine after reassembly.
A year and a half after that (a week ago, actually) the four screws holding the forward cap on came loose, so I partially disassembled the unit again and did an inspection. Everything was still greased up and looked/worked great. Threw some threadlocker on the screws and reassembled it.
I've used this for: frequent tire rotations, regular suspension replacements, an engine replacement/teardown/reassembly, a transmission replacement, and regular maintenance when there's enough room.
Because of the limited torque, on higher torque fasteners like axle nuts or front control arm bushing nuts, I would sometimes have to break them loose by hand. On one occasion I had to use a strangers high torque Milwaukee in a junkyard to remove the axle nut on a CV axle still installed in a spindle off-car. Sometimes Cousin Eddie (and even my breaker bar) struggles on other bolts in mostly rust-free junkyard cars.
I was wanting a bit more removal torque for those rare occasions, so I went ahead and ordered an authentic Makita impact that is smaller/lighter but is rated at more torque than Cousin Eddie has tested out to. But, considering Cousin Eddie was about $40 shipped and provided almost 3 years of use before I wanted something better, I'd say it was definitely worth the money.

On the other hand the Makita is definitely for the professional tradesman who will use this tool on a daily basis and get a good service life out of it.

Great tests.. You have a good point on the 30 dollar tool. It's 5 times less than Makita, but is Makita also 5 times better? If so the 30 dollar knock off is not bad actually. It could get someone going until they can upgrade to something more durable.

We bought the same knock off impact wrench for $30 on ebay too, we're happy with it. Dad got it to change the shocks on the Cherokee and to do tire rotations when needed, it works fine for what we use it for. If you're going to use an impact wrench a lot go with the Makita, but if you're only going to need the wrench a couple times a year the knock off will do just fine, but hey, it's your money.
Oveida Sinclair You must not live near rust. I couldn’t remove the bolts to change out the struts on my car with a 450 ft lb air impact. And that was after I broke them free with a breaker bar.
For $30 it's a good deal for someone who only needs to use it a few times a year.

I would be interested in seeing how a Dewalt and an Earthquake wrench would compare to the Makita. Very good test and really shows the differences between a cheap tool and the real deal.

And the AEG (Ridgid to North America). I've done a few rudimentary comparisons in Australia between AEG and Makita and found the AEG to be damn good value. The cordless tools are almost as good, the corded stuff is actually better, but only 2/3rds of the price and with a longer warranty. Based on that I went with the AEG, and have been super happy. Plus, nobody will pinch them because the other tradies all have Makita and Milwaulkee so the batteries won't fit! Heh.

i wholeheartedly disagree. is the makita 15-20% better? yes absolutely, but do you NEED that for 300% markup? absolutely not. Given you can have 80% of a makita for 30 dollars, this thing is insanely good and I wouldn't hesitate to buy an arsenal of knockoffs to do the grimy jobs and keep my makita (well actually, my millwalkee) for the serious and precise work where you actually need something beefy. Overall, I don't think we're at a pitstop here, the knockoff can still accomplish a particular job in the same amount of time given you don't pick your nose or wipe your face in that time you save by getting a nut off 2 seconds faster.

ive been running that exact knockoff in my service truck for a little over a year now and it has served me well! Not an issue yet and I need to mention that mobile mechanic work is ROUGH on tools. My makita ends up breaking in 2 years due to cracks, brakekleen etc, and this has almost lasted just as long. For normal use where your tool would last you 10 years, I dont see it lasting as long as the makita, but when you are breaking tools from basically abuse vs lifetime, the cheapy is well worth the money!! Trust me, order one and your makita will sit safe at home in the box for quite awhile, this thing works great

I have a suggestion for you. You've done showdowns for a lot of different kinds of saw blades and cutting tools. I recently bought an oscillating multi-tool and have noticed that there is a huge price difference between the name brand blades (DeWalt, etc.) and the presumably Chinese knockoff brand blades sold on Amazon. I'd like to see a comparison of these blades to see if the price difference is worth it. Some of your other comparison videos have proven that better brands typically are worth it.

I can say there isn't much difference from experience. The best value you can get with those is buying a nice fine file. I have a dewalt blade in my kit that I've used for years and just file the points back whenever they're dulled. The blades are high carbon steel and you can sharpen them
Now at our local hardware stores they sell cheap blades at the checkout. Instead of 20 dollar dewalt blades and 30-80 dollar fein blades we can now just grab the 5 dollar cheapie without having to order them
In all honesty $30 for that tool even with the lag and lower torque ratings is one hell of a deal!

@Sy Badine Yeah reputable goods are fine, yet a lot of their exports are highly volume based low quality products. Though, since they lack human rights, they can make giant buildings in days, and build trains that go 300mph and balance a penny on it's side

2nd rate batteries are just as much of a danger. I'd never charge the knock-off anywhere that couldn't tolerate a fire.

That being said I do think it seems to be worth it for 30 at least until you can find yourself able to afford a better one.
Some advice I've seen on mechanic forums say buy the cheaper tool until it breaks, then buy the better one because by then you will know whether or not you actually need the better tool.That advice is aimed more towards DIYers who aren't working with the tools day in and day out.

Agree. It is more than fair because it’s brushless, too. A BL-ryobi sets me back more than 150 bucks and it’s a Chinese brand too. If someone can afford it he or she will buy the makita anyway.
I remember the cheap Chinese tools from 25 years ago. They sucked and were in no case worth buying. This has luckily changed.
That drill is a fire waiting to happen i wouldn't sleep at night if it had battery inserted... No fuse in the housing, cheap no brand switch (The Mikita is Omron, one of the best names in switches), And no battery ground (again, FIRE). I would never buy that drill. Id get a 50 dollar Ryobi before that. At least if that burned down your house you could sue Ryobi, Who you gonna sue if the fake Makita burns down your house? Yourself??

Also it's not like your getting a battery with the fake cheap Makita, those are 62$ for a 2AH shitter, BEFORE you get a charger. Not to mention the inevitable house fire your gonna have on your hands when that drill goes up in flames. there's NO battery ground and NO in-housing fuse. The switch is also complete shit and will probably stop working the second you squeeze it hard. STAY AWAY!!! this is for peasants, serfs, and Instagram influencers who want to post a picture of themselves 'doing work'.
The knock-off tool only has two battery contacts, they skipped the temperature sensor. This could result in reduced lifespan or damage to the battery. The effects would be worse on lower capacity battery packs too.

Thanks. After viewing this video, I was amazed by the cheap impact wrench. Went ahead and bought one. Cannot be happier with the performance/cost ratio. Excellent for mower blade removal/mounting. Effortless! The 1/2" center is hollow. It takes hex-base bits. An impact driver for me. Cool. I don't expect it to be used on a daily basis and long lasting. Great for a casual DIYer.

@@hpw-ws6bj , yes! i'm fussy about adapters. i bought a milwaulkie but the way it operated was a bloody nuisance. so i bought a ryobi adapter. i had to buy some tungsten carbide drill bits to carefully drill a hole in the side of it (its hardened steel) to accept a pin to make it semi-permanent.
It would be nice to see a dewalt vs Milwaukee impact wrench showdown.

This was a great test, if you combined your testing with AvE's tool breakdowns, there's no way you couldn't make a more informed purchase decision.
One thing to note is cousin eddie doesn't have a battery thermal cutout pin to shut the tool down. Other than that, for $30 you can't go wrong if you use the tool sparingly or want to throw one in your car/truck and don't care if it gets damaged or stolen.

Mikhail Akbashev AvE has a far more comprehensive tool breakdown but the performance testing here is better and more relatable to what a regular joe will use the tool for.

~30 bucks for such a useful tool is actually quite a good price. As long as you don't expect it to last through heavy and regular use, it's surprisingly useful. A nice, cheap tool to have laying about in the shed/garage for occasional use. Better that than an expensive tool you rarely use.
Reliability and durability is the most important part. Power can always be found cheaper, so it's not a defining factor. So.. if it is a tool one needs to have working any time it is pulled out (even if it is rarely), then the expensive and original option is the way to go. If just a tool that is nice to have, but not really important, the knock-off.

Jordan Bailie why would you use a impact driver to put a bed together all u need is a screw drive or socket set if ur lazy an electric screwdriver will be just fine. Impacts are for lug nuts, frame bolts, construction etc.....for $30 you could replace it almost 5 times a year for price of one real impact, bargin value

I'm bemused by the absolute blind spot of comments here ignoring that PF is using a Makita battery and charger for the eddy, since Eddy does not come with a battery or charger. Check the $50 eddy's on ebay and they all do not include a battery or charger, they say for "Makita battery". The premise is simply wrong here. If the eddy is perfect for the average home owner, then the average home owner has adopted the Makita battery, which is not the case. There are plenty of inexpensive impact wrenches with battery and charger with an actual company behind those products, than the combination eddy + makita battery and charger. Moreover, not sure the average home owner with minor projects needs an impact wrench.

Absolutely. Certain tools you just don't need to use that often. My drill press was about $45 from China - I'm still using it 15 years later. Granted, I don't need it often, but I've certainly got my money's worth out of it. If it ever fails I can afford a better one now but until it does there's no need to replace it.
Great job on the video, I have 2 makitas and 0 knock offs. They have worked flawlessly for years. One is brushless and the other is not but it still has worked great.

I have that model (Makita 6012hd) and just recently got a battery for it on amazon. What a difference to modern drills haha. I still try to use it time to time just because it was my grandpas and she still runs good. Battery was a no name and only $20.

The amount of work he can still do is fantastic and I would welcome him into my garage any time. Makita is a very good tool but for the quantity of work i do, Cousin Eddy is just fine.

the fact that these have more torque for unscrewing then screwing is actually a very nice feature i never thought about. Another great video!
Most electrical powered tools have more torque in their reverse gear. It's because of a different gear ratio for the reverse gear. More torque, less revs.
It kinda makes sense though too. If you can put more torque on than you can take off that creates a problem 😂

I disagree. Even well known brands can stop working at some time and if Chinese impact wrench will stop, you can afford three more of them before you can afford Makita.
If Makita will stop working and you'll buy a new one, you can have eight of them.

My dad was a builder and he had a Milwaukee for 20 years, and it still works today almost as well as it did 20 years ago
@@potatolord5827 I have similar experience with our local well known tools. But with the ones which were made really 20 years ago. Not nowdays. Many parts made of metal were replaced by plastic and are not so durable. I also have some bad experiences with warranty. Cheap tools are ok, you'll get new one without a word (not talking about Wish and Aliexpress,...) but premium brands are not always so happy about complains. They are trying to negotiate, blame you for wrong use, reapair as little as possible. So I will hold my opinon for now - it's easier to buy 4 (quite powerful and good) copies than one original.

I guess the $30 knockoff would be fine for my needs - changing wheels in 2 cars twice a year.
Is it then worth having this tool? I do the same. Torque wrench does the job, it's not a knockoff and does not need a battery.
I was recently faced with the same dilemma and ended up getting the Makita! I rationalized that someday i may really need a torque wrench for other purposes and holding on to that $30 piece of garbage for years does not sound appealing!
If it can do the torque! Especially if anyone ugga duggas them on with a pneumatic impact.
I've bought cheap air powered ones and they are worthless most of the time because they can't break the lug nut loose causing you to have to use the lug wrench anyway. I don't even bother to get it out anymore when changing tires/wheels.
And when you take the wheels off to work on brakes and suspension.

@@ProjectFarm If you do decide to build things one day use good tools! Makita is the brand I buy because of the range of tools and the quality/price they exhibit. There are better more robust tools available but the cost stars to get rather much higher and I am not a professional working 8 hours a day 5 days a week with my tools so Makita is definitely a good choice for me.

old greybeard tip i learned: scratch lines on the outside of your sockets at the points of the hex, you can line up the driver to get it in first time.
Don't try this in the bedroom, it ends with stripped nuts.

TRUTH! When I was younger, I could only afford the budget versions. But, I tell ya, nothing replaces quality! This wouldn't be a bad back-up, but def wouldn't be my primary tool.
It's the other way around. But I usually remember prices better than any other aspect of the product, so it doesn't apply to me.
@@zwz.zdenek A good example would be the difference between a cheap $25 garden hose vs. a $45 one. Both will get the job done but you will constantly fight the cheap one to straighten it out of its coiled state and prevent kinks everytime you use it where as the $45 hose will immediately come out of its coiled state as soon as you remove it from the packaging and won't kink. So yeah the $25 hose is cheap and you can then go out to eat with the money you saved but you will pay for it with your sanity every time you use that junky $25 hose. After a few times you'll see that the $20 difference wasn't that expensive after all.

Me too but: not all air impact guns are created equal and how much pressure, what size hoses, do we use high flow connectors. Lots of variables.

@Dan Harold: I agree. You could very well have a situation where the electric beats air with a 1/4” hose but air with 1/2” hose is times better then electric. How do you know whats fair? 1/4” hose, 3/8” hose, 1/2” hose, everything between say 90 & 200 psi, water separator vs no water separator, in-line Oiler vs no Oiler, standard air hose quick connects vs high flow quick connects vs industrial quick connects, compressor size/capability, tank size, and every possible combination of each.. Filming all of this would easily take days.
@@danharold3087 My experience with quick connects went like this: I have a Sears Companion impact gun that would not take lug nuts off my cars. I assumed it was the gun's fault until one day, I saw some quick connects at HF (I think the label said automotive quick connects). I bought them and then I had no problems removing lug nuts.
