  • 💥This is our step-by-step guide for growing Arugula Microgreens!! In this video you will find tons of Tips & Tricks along the way! Arugula microgreens are a fun microgreen to grow, however something that can be challenging with Arugula microgreens is getting the crop tall enough to harvest easily. In this video we do a good job of showing you how we achieve taller Arugula Microgreens and you should too with the technique we use! ✅
    ✅This Microgreen Tutorial video shows you how to grow from seeding to harvest using the Slow Bolt Arugula seed variety of Microgreens, which we grow using Pro Mix Soil, however you can also apply this process when using Coco Coir! These microgreens have a absolutely powerful pepper taste. They've been one of our favorites to add into salads and breakfast! 🤤
    Microgreen growing tip: Arugula seeds are "mucilaginous" - meaning that once they get moist they develop a natural sticky coating. Do not try to remove the sticky coating! And keep in mind that they WILL stick to the bottom of the top tray, however we show you the trick we use during germination to help with this during our video here!
    ➡️We hope all the tips and tricks sprinkled throughout the video to help you grow microgreens at home or for your business! When making these videos, we take extra care to put out TH-cam videos that have the most comprehensive, easy, and in-depth free Microgreens Tutorials that you can find on TH-cam, as we do not hide any of our growing techniques, methods, or secrets and we try to be as transparent as we can.
    As always, thank you for the continued support!!👩‍🌾
    **Keep in mind that for different grow mediums such as grow mats or our reusable microgreen grow medium, different techniques may need to be used to get the exact results, so keep in mind that not all mediums are equal - however, this video will give you a great head start on learning!
    And if you want to know even more in depth how to grow microgreens? Our newest book "Becoming a Microgreen Master" is NOW AVAILABLE!! 🥳🥳🥳 It is our ultimate guide to growing microgreens and is a combination of everything we have learned as of 2019 to 2021. (linked below)

    I came back to check out this video again. I'm currently growing my first tray of Arugula from seeds that we saved from our own garden in 2019.
    Medium: half inch of compost at the bottom half inch coco on top.
    Weight: not using any weight, just a black Styrofoam cut-out to block the light.
    I'm misting twice a day...
    I'm on day three at the moment. I'll definitely keep the blackout for longer.
    Thanks again for the video, and Happy New Year!

    I am just learning about Microgreen growing this winter. I regularly grow sprouts and have a garden in summer. I really really enjoy your videos! I like the straight forward easily adapted information you present.
    I live near Johnny’s Selected Seed - so I have been gifted and gone down and bought quite a few of their varieties.
    After spending some time and worry trying to destick arugula and other mucilaginous seeds from the tray above - I love your simple and obvious solution! Again thank you!

    Save back spent spice bottles to use as seed “shakers” instead of using your hands to disseminate seeds. It makes for a more-even layering and is also easier control. Spice bottles are often clear glass and have easily-removed yet tight-fitting snap on lids.

      The scale that I use to measure out seed comes with a shallow little tray cover. I just spoon the seed into the tray until I get what I want, then a gentle little shake-a shake-a and the tray corner spreads the seed very nicely!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah we've tried that in the past but personally didn't like it. We enjoy seeding by hand! Great suggestion though 🥳

    I appreciate very much these walk through videos! You have just enlightened me on some of the reasons my Arugula was not growing as well. I do have one question though - my grow room is right beside the building air conditioner and the room tends to run between 69 and 72 deg F - My micro-green stems don't appear to get as large as yours are. Would that be temperature related (Or over-seeding related at 25gms)

  • @littlewhitedory1

    Hi Guys, I'm wondering if you have developed preferences for mesh bottom or the Bootstrap Farmer shallow trays with holes? I've seen you use both but haven't heard you discuss this topic much. So Mesh vs. Holes?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question... I guess if I had to choose one, it would be the mesh. It works well enough with the soils and everything but mainly, it really works with our hydroponic mediums. If I was growing just soil, I'd probably only use the holes. Since we do so many experiments, Mesh would be the way to go because they are much more flexible in what can be grown in them. I haven't tried growing too many hydroponic mediums in the hole trays so I can't speak for how useful it would be in that area...
      Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the great videos! I just began my adventure with micro greens. Question for you… I noticed your top tray has the holes in it. Is it better to do that or with no holes? I bought top trays with no holes thinking that it was for black out and to let no light in.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! Glad to hear you are getting into the wonderful world of microgreens!! The setup that we generally use is 1 no holed tray (very bottom = reservoir) + 1 holed tray (mesh or slotted = where the grow medium goes / crops grow) + 1 no holed tray (typically black = very top tray for blackout and the weighted period during germination)

    1.I notice that you put some heavy weight on the top and sometimes you do not put, kindly compare between this video and Mellon Videos, so kindly inform what is the Standard?.
    2.Seeds Grams is different from plant to plant, some time u put 50gm, sometimes 75gm?
    3.Some other Instructors in You tubes recommend growing Microgrooves without Soil?
    4.Hopefully to utilize your Experience to roll out one table that explain all different seeds with the corresponding Grams, is it worth heavy Weight on the Top or not?, Temp, Flora & Solutions>>>.etc...
    5.Marketing!! It seems represent a headache, kindly what is your experience?

  • @autumnreneebubble

    I purchased on amazon yesterday, glad you get credit for it! I was looking for a way to support you so that's perfect! Question: is there a way to use a watering nozzle on a watering can instead of a hose? If so, is there a product you recommend? My regular spray bottles aren't going to cut it, and I plan to use distilled water - it's already ph balanced and completely pure. Thanks! 😁

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yay!! thank you so much for supporting us 🥳 Hmm that's a good question, I don't think I've ever seen anything like that...I'd really just suggest a spray bottle or one of the ones you pump up first. Like what people use for weed killer or spraying their outdoor garden with garret juice. I'd also suggest using tap water over distilled water for microgreens! We have a video that we're working on editing where we do a comparison of using regular tap water vs distilled vs 2 other hydroponic nutrients

      Great question and sorry about missing that detail! We water once in the morning and once at night. We usually start with lower quantity of water like 1/2cup. So it would be a total of 1 cup a day (1/2 morning, 1/2 evening). Pay attention to your soil and make sure it is drinking up all the water it is getting so you don’t over-water.
      If you see it drying out too much between waterings or the plants are drooping with a dry soil, then increase your watering volume.
      Hope that helps and thank you for the support!! 🤗🌱🌱

    I was wondering what your favourite micro green mixed salad is? Would it be possible to choose plants that have similar growing parameters yet offer a tasty variety? If so, I have an idea... please place all the seeds in their right proportions in a seed pack that you can sell on your website. I'd be a buyer! Many of us who want to just try growing them for ourselves don't want to grow trays of different plants that have different growth rates and growing parameters.
    Given your knowledge and advanced palate given you've tried sooooo many micro greens would be the perfect people to make a product like this for us homegrowers :)

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Love your idea!! The main thing with mixed seed packets is choosing crops that germinate and grow at the same rate as others. We have a full walk-through grow video using 3 different radish varieties on a single try that we're currently working on that talks about this subject 🥳 We plan on doing some more like it soon. We've grown Basic Salad Mix a few times, but the growth wasn't consistent.

    • @AdventuresofTheGreatBanana
      @AdventuresofTheGreatBanana 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OnTheGrow I see, OK... well if I could just make a suggestion? Would it be possible to list on this thread plants by category? Or perhaps put it in an excel sheet and then post it on your site? What would be useful is a list of plants you've tried and list them under categories like Germination period and Blackout period? Have them categorized by time. So for example under Germination Period 1-3 days, have the following parameters: Blackout period, Brick Weight (yes/no), Plant Family (radish, leaf etc). Then do the next category, Germination Period 4-5 days etc.
      While finding the perfect mix is impossible, this chart would help make it possible from home growers to experiment with different combinations. Perhaps things don't line up perfectly but an extra day of germination for one plant type might not have huge detrimental effects to 2 other plants that are grown with it. Same goes with the Blackout period.
      Something else to just keep in the back of your minds... most of your viewers are home growers, not people who are looking to profit from growing microgreens. For us, yield and consistent product wouldn't be a huge priority. We're just out to see if we can be a little more self-reliant and make ourselves some tasty salad :)

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great idea, the only thing is you'd have to grow a tremendous amount of plants to get enough seed to do microgreens since they are sown at such high density + have really quick turn over rates. Each adult plant only produces so many seeds. That and it would take a lot of time harvesting the seed. For instance, Mandi had a massive basil plant that took awhile to go to flower outside, It produced a decent amount of seed pods but it was a lot of work to get the seeds out of the pods and separate the seed from the debris and each pod only had about 4seeds in it. By the end of it we maybe had enough for 2 trays of microgreens. Which all the seeds may not germinate.
      We do think it's a really cool idea though!! But I just don't know if it would be good for microgreens seeds vs buying them unless you had a large operation. Thank you for your question!! It was a good one 🥳

I think that wasn't the way to go. My test crop in a soup container was beautiful, but only got a 9 gram harvest. Same happened to my Bull's Blood Beets. Soaked the seeds for 7 hours, in hindsight, soaking the grow medium probably wasn't a smart idea with seeds that had been soaked. Too much water. I think I'm going to leave the soaking the grow medium for when I'm more experienced. 🤷‍♂️ I tried, didn't work. On to the next crop

      Also make sure you have good airflow and that your humidity isn't to high, we keep ours at 50% or lower. That will help a ton.

    Why do you use Ocean Solution instead of Masterblend?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mainly because it is organic... it provides really great growth, it is just slightly lacking in nutrients. We love the coloration of the MasterBlend though.

    You may have explained this before but could you explain what true leaf is or point me to a video that explains it ?

      True leaf are the leaves that come after the first set of leaves. You'll see they look different than the first set.

    Will arugula regrow after cutting?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how long you let it grow out for. I think baby-greens will, but I don't think microgreens will.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have seen most of the "lettuce" varieties regrow when we toss the used medium into our compost pile, so most likely they will regow, depengind on how short you harvest them.

    where do you buy your seeds

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right now, we get most of ours from Trueleaf, here is the link to the seeds we used: www.gopjn.com/t/TUJGRklGSkJHRUhNSEpCRkpIRk1K?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.trueleafmarket.com%2Fproducts%2Farugula-slow-bolt-microgreens-seeds%3Fvariant%3D45198169160

    Does it grow back or just 1 harvest?

    • @OnTheGrow

      Just one harvest for most crops. Some will grow back, but with diminishing returns.
