I have ran into the same root browning using the hemp mats. I was able to trace it down to the mat allowing some light to get to the roots. Harmless for the most part. But woth noting. I wa able to trace it down by adding a thin layer of vermiculite to the too of the tray once i had sprouts. There was a clear line between white roots and “browned” roots. The end product was the same, so i dont bother with it.
Great video! I just would like to suggest that you keep your H2O2 in a dark place, away from light. I read that the H2O2 will convert to plain H2O very quickly when kept in the light :)
We generally use ours within a few days and it is out of the light... I was under the impression that it isn’t light, but UV that causes it to breakdown along with temperature. Since our indoor lights have a low UV output, I don’t think it is as much of a concern. I’ll double check that soon though and thanks for sharing the tip!

Just now trying this crop using coco mat or whatever hamama uses for their seed quilts. Fingers crossed. Have wanted to try this crop ever since I saw you first do it.
You got this!!! Those coco mats are a little challenging because they lack the ability to retain water, but you should have it as long as they don’t dry out too much! I think most coco mats are coated in a rubber type material which makes it a bit trickier.

I have a few for you. I'm researching and trying to come up with a good plan for my "lack" of space and "lack" of funds :( One: would LED shop type lights be fine to use? I'm probably only looking at doing two or three trays for now because I have very little space to put them. Two: which varieties are best for beginners? Lastly, it would be cool if you did a vlog of how you use the greens, recipes etc. I love your videos btw.
Thank you so much for the support Christie! Yeah, we use LED’s, Ill post more about that down below... They are cheap and work greatly! I would suggest Broccoli/Kolrabi/Radish for beginners as they all grow really well. We are hoping to get more into vlog style videos this year! We primarily use LED lights that are 18 watts each and we use three of them per shelf. Each light puts out roughly 2,000 lumens which is a combined output of 6,000 lumens per shelf. We prefer to use only LED lights since they use less energy and create less heat than fluorescent bulbs… The color temperature we use for lighting is 6000-6500K. We keep our lights 8 inches above our grow trays. As for our lighting schedule, we have had great results with 17 hours ON and 7hours OFF everyday.

The idea is to have a farm we can take to the markets if needed or even directly to the restaurants. We can also move it very easily from home to home when we move...

Hopefully you are using food grade hydrogen peroxide b/c the non food grade one is not safe for eating. Meaning if you are using it to treat your roots your sprouts will uptake that in their stems and will remain in your final product.
Interesting. The chemistry related to this can be addressed by solutions other than hydrogen peroxide. There is nothing wrong with hydrogen peroxide it’s just that I am a home winemaker and always have handy a number of mild sanitising agents. Basically - to knock out any stray bacterium’s you need only drop the pH to around 2. This level of pH will not inhibit growth - as we know. So for those winemakers watching this excellent video I suggest you use your normal StarSan spray solution. Thanks guys for the video.

Hi Cj and Mandy I hope you guys are doing well. Seen a couple of uploads on your channel from 2020 but I was on holiday so I missed them but I will watch from the beginning. Maybe I’m late but I have a request which I would appreciate if you can make a video on it’s not related to micro greens though. If convenient, Would you guys be interested in growing spirulina, I have been reading a lot about spirulina and I have found that like microgreens it’s packed with nutrients as well as proteins vitamins etc it is considered to be a food of future and at one website I read that it is equivalent to eating 5 cups or 5 servings (I can’t remember, read a long time ago, I will quote the websites shortly and get back to you soon) An advice that that I wanted to give is I saw the microgreens on the shelves in the background, I think a good idea would be to add a mirror to the back so if the light doesn’t reach to the greens, the surface will reflect the light and hence you could be using a single light and it could shine the other trays as well in my opinion Lastly I have read that there are some grow light that use solar power although you guys might have to look up the different options but I think this website offers some options californialightworks.com and I think the lights can also be programmed to dusk and dawn settings as well as brightness and many more features These are somethings that I thought I should share since I strongly believe in the idea of SHARING IS CARING Let me know what are your thoughts on this Keep up the nice work, hope to see more from you guys ❤️❤️❤️
The reason we have the white aluminum walls is so that the light reflects onto the greens off the wall to those that aren’t getting direct light. It works well enough for now! We will see about growing the spirulina but for now we have a huge list of tests and videos with microgreens so it may be a while! Thanks for the continued support!!
Great question! Amaranth are very delicate and only last about two weeks. Most of our other crops will last 2-6weeks but we try to eat/use everything within a week for maximum freshness!

Gonna go for a 5th attempt tomorrow haha - I keep getting damping off but I think i'll go thinner on the seeding and be more sparse with watering and I think I'll get it out of blackout for 20 mins and under the fan once per day for a good airing out - apparently that helps Just to confirm - you add 2tbsp of 3% peroxide to 1L of water for your anti fungal? I'm gonna make up some tomorrow and use that instead of my straight 3% lol - I think I've been bleaching the leaves with my super strong solution cheers
Id try a little less water, and yes your probably bleaching them, straight water should be good enough. Most micro-green do not like to be top watered after first few days. And putting a fan or some air flow over tops, part or all day, depending on speed. It does not have to be fast, and would not suggest fast.
Damping off is a pain! Lol, that’s hilarious that you’ve been bleaching them :) Yeah, we just do 2tbsp of the 3% and 1 liter of water. The main thing for us is temperature and not too much water. If it is too cold, it will get damping off... Same with slightly too much water. It is really a fine line.
Looking good! You definitely have the right idea with the peroxide. I'm not sure the issue with the roots was so much a pathogen problem as it was an overly moist substrate, but it certainly couldn't hurt to be proactive. If anything, the peroxide should help to curtail the likelihood of disease that persists with the use of a very damp medium. Great job! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the support! We are using 3% and that has worked well for us! Some other growers prefer to use 12% or 35% but we haven’t found a need to go stronger on ours...

Hi I really love the way you present your channel. It is good to show people close up your good and bad experiences. As I work mostly with hemp perhaps I can give you a tip, if the medium is quite wet don’t give any more water even a small spray as hemp will break down and cause pathogens. I feel the medium and examine closely all over to make sure all areas are nicely wet and I leave it alone. Once the roots form I am very careful with the amount of water I give possibly maximum half a cup of water and I will check three times a day . If the roots are drinking the whole half cup I will give more if there is any water left even a few drops I leave the watering for later as I don’t want problems with the root system. My roots always stay white because of this and I don’t run into any problems. I hope this helps you I only say this because I had problems myself with over watering and I find if we can help one another it is all to the good. Hemp is a temperamental medium and really doesn’t like over watering. Kind regards M
Have you tried a simple fine grain screen in place of the hemp mat that you used in this video? Such a fine grain screen would be fine enough that the seeds (even small ones) would not fall through and would be reusable! Such a screen would also simplify, I think, the harvesting process.
Great question David! We have tried that before but the main issue is that it drys out very quickly... Also, if you add too much water, it causes a bad smell and makes the seed rot. It is very doable and there are growers like HydroponicGardeningWithBrent that use the mesh a lot. We don't like how challenging the mesh screen is for germination when compared to a grow medium.
@@OnTheGrow Thank you for feedback! I have seen most of Brent's videos and was inspired to take an approach similar to his, but I am focusing more on one that does not use the pump he relies on. I have struggled to master the "simple" broccoli so far. And my problems have been as you suggested with smell and also (I think) with over watering.
Absolutely gorgeous product can’t wait to try this. Interesting I’ve been using food grade 30% hydrogen peroxide in some of the same ways as you. However I was noticing that my growth periods were longer than what I was noticing with some other TH-cam channels including yours and had questions. Anyways I was listening to a podcast by Diego footer on growing microgreens, The podcast was labelled microgreens diseases and solutions and it was specifically mentioned that hydrogen peroxide when applied on a regular basis can potentially harm the cellular structure and developmental process, resulting in stunted growth. However, when I watched this episode it doesn’t appear that you’re seeing the same issues. I will say that I stopped using it as regular as I was previously and I have noticed that my growth/development has noticeably increased in a beneficial way. what is your room temperature and humidity normally at? Be interesting to see a video that you’d put out on hydrogen peroxide versus not using it and if you’re seeing any potential results. What I’ve done is made sure that my medium is always soaked in a hydrogen peroxide solution much the same as what you have in terms of in your spray bottle, and then take my growing medium “biostrate” draining of any hydrogen peroxide water solution and soak it in pH balanced at 5.7 to 6.0 to ensure that I’m not saturating with hydrogen peroxide.
We can try and get a video together on H2O2 and its effects on growth compared to not using it. It is something I would like to know! Here is some info on our temp and humidity: Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day. That’s a great question! We haven’t really tried sprouting yet but I believe it would work! These are very susceptible to pathogens so just stay ontop of your cleaning and sanitation and it should be great!

Not to be that guy, but I don't think your peroxide solution is doing much of anything. You're diluting what's probably already a 2% solution down by a further 1:128 which makes it about a 0.001% solution (so 0.00001:1)...and your solution is stored in a clearish bottle with a decent bit of head room in it, so if that's been in there any amount of time, it's probably already decomposed down to water and oxygen.
Yes! So 3LW means 3 days of light weight on top (aka an empty tray) and 2BO means 2 days with no weight and no light (empty tray reversed). Hope that helps!
If I'm saving my own seed from my amaranth plants - I DO need to winnow the seeds first to get rid of the chaff don't I? It would be faster and easier if I didn't need to, but I'm thinking it would mold if I didn't. Your professional thoughts here? Thanks!
On one of your previous videos your wife mentioned that germinating Amaranth on soil was much better than hydroponically. What's changed now that you are using the hydroponic method ?
Okay brother I have one for you to try. You know hemp is way fire retardant,so I'd you use hemp mats often use a hand held propane torch and scortch the roots after harvest and the top. I see u use hydrogen peroxide so you know that value aswell. Just try and see...
Im confused..."They dont love water" but yet every day you give it water...sometimes twice a day. roots brown, due to too much water, but yet you water again....

We love the 1" deep trays! They don't use as much grow medium and do just as well of a job. They are easier to handle, harvest from, clean, and so on... We have a ton of 2.5" sitting around collecting dust. They are good for fun grows like Kratky style: th-cam.com/video/xIvB4Dbv8Us/w-d-xo.html
hi i want to know,i have been growing radish using rock wool medium and my microgreens can't grow straight up . it keeping fall to some side may i know why thats happen?and what can i do to make it straight in future..
That might be because either your stretching them for to long in black out OR you could be growing them for to long in general. We've never grown on rockwool for microgreens so I'm not 100% I'd first try adjusting both of the things I just mentioned, or even switching to a different grow medium

Varies per crop, Amaranth lasts about 1 week or just over since its very delicate. But other microgreens will last a few weeks. We've never tried to freeze them, so I can't give you a answer on that question...sorry! Thank you so much for watching 🥳
Light will absolutely effect the growth... Not sure if going up or down on the intensity will increase growth because we haven’t yet tried it with amaranth. We will try some Amaranth under different lights and let you know in about two weeks!

Great question! We determine what type of tray we use based on what grow medium we are using. For hydroponic mat mediums we usually use the mesh trays and for mediums like Soil or Coco-coir we use the slotted trays so that way the medium doesn't fall through the mesh as much. You can still use the mesh trays with soil or coco-coir though! You'll just have some of the medium fall through the holes.

Grow a couple of love lies bleeding amaranth plants and you will get a ton of seeds from them. Many amaranth varieties also have big flower heads with tons of seeds too. A quinoa plant will also give you a ton of quinoa seeds. There is no need to buy them from other companies. These seeds are too expensive.
We are about to start growing microgreens in a rather broken down space. of 20sq m. It needs new windows and some kind of ventilation and at the moment is not clean. I see you have 2 small fans. Is that enough for airflow? And what would be the optimal temperature to grow greens? Its cold in the wonter to 1C and hot and sticky in the summer.Im not sure how best to heat/cool/comtrol the temperature and humdity. Any ideas? Cheaply!
Great questions! We have a big fan that circulates the majority of the air in our growspace. The small fans are really just for preventing microclimates on the shelves and keeps the air moving. I would get some kind of A/C unit for summer and a Heater for winter. We have a small room heater that works really well and is fairly cheap to buy. We actually lucked out and got these trays first. I have tried some other germination flats after getting these and everything else is extremely disappointing. Most other trays are so flimsy they can’t handle the weight or even the weight of the soil... We have only had one of these trays crack in a corner after nearly a full year of pretty solid use. I am always on the lookout for better trays though!
Basically everything we grow is grown hydroponically! We just usually use coco-coir as the hydroponic medium and add our nutrients via bottom watering. As for the grow mats, will use them with most crops. Just not all the time.
It can be challenging for bigger seeds but it still works well. Each grow medium has its own quirks... Hemp holds a lot more water than it appears that it can hold, so overwatering is a concern with hemp during the germination process. Last time we tried sunflowers, we accidentally over-watered and that made our germination worse. We haven't tried again yet, but we will see if we can test that soon!

I think i would skip the 5th day, of turning tray over... and that was before i seen the 6th day. In conclusion, i will not be growing amaranth! Ok now i was noticing the lack of roots beside brown spot? You do not rub your hands across top if micro-greens to remove seed hulls? I do it alot, it feels so good. Now id like to suggest you use less water, they can go dry. In fact i drain excess water... and then you say just that.... Have you tried using a soaking tray, that you drop a tray in solution for 10-15-30 mins, then back to normal tray on shelf. They should soak enough water up into seed mat. When i saw the 13th day, and i see water sitting on bottom, i wonder why you dont get more issues. Pretty please try less water, i truly believe you will have less issues, and growth will stay the same or go up... I havent seen all your videos, and know you try/test almost everything. I like to stand my trays up on an angle, so product falls down into clean area(i use soil). Same i never reuse, either mats/soil or compost. Into garden it goes, its awesome there. I think soil is the best way to go also. I'm working on a safe way to harvest microgreens and grasses grown in soil without worrying about dirt in the product. I will provide the results for you to see. It will probably be around three months.
@@BusterABrown Im wondering if we can use a metal screening for windows and doors, as a barrier above seeds. If the holes are big enough for micro-green to grow thru. We can guild our knife along screen and avoid contact with soil or seeds underneath. May need to find a screen with wider spacings.
@@pseudoscientist4585 Yes you could, but I don't like using any metal unless it is 316 surgical grade steel. Everything else will rust. I tried to order some, but it would have been very expensive and I would have had to order different size openings for the size of the seeds. I use 316 stainless surgical steel for my mason jars. They are rounded and work for all seeds. I got them off of Amazon. They actually have two rounded screens and the rounded section goes down in the jar. Then I drain the seeds in an Oxo two cup angled measuring cup. Buy the lids that sell for around 15 bucks, because they don't charge a shipping fee.
@@BusterABrown Thank-You i really like your idea, im going to try folding edges over on some screening as prototype. I start alot of my seeds in jars to soak first 12-24 hrs. I think they are prefect for that.

Thank you so much for the support Christie! Yeah, we use LED’s, Ill post more about that down below... They are cheap and work greatly! I would suggest Broccoli/Kolrabi/Radish for beginners as they all grow really well. We are hoping to get more into vlog style videos this year! We primarily use LED lights that are 18 watts each and we use three of them per shelf. Each light puts out roughly 2,000 lumens which is a combined output of 6,000 lumens per shelf. We prefer to use only LED lights since they use less energy and create less heat than fluorescent bulbs… The color temperature we use for lighting is 6000-6500K. We keep our lights 8 inches above our grow trays. As for our lighting schedule, we have had great results with 17 hours ON and 7hours OFF everyday.

The idea is to have a farm we can take to the markets if needed or even directly to the restaurants. We can also move it very easily from home to home when we move...

Why did you not add a weight?
We use the "empty tray" as the weight for this crop because amaranth is very delicate and can't handle to much weight or it causes issues!

Hopefully you are using food grade hydrogen peroxide b/c the non food grade one is not safe for eating. Meaning if you are using it to treat your roots your sprouts will uptake that in their stems and will remain in your final product.

Interesting. The chemistry related to this can be addressed by solutions other than hydrogen peroxide. There is nothing wrong with hydrogen peroxide it’s just that I am a home winemaker and always have handy a number of mild sanitising agents. Basically - to knock out any stray bacterium’s you need only drop the pH to around 2. This level of pH will not inhibit growth - as we know. So for those winemakers watching this excellent video I suggest you use your normal StarSan spray solution. Thanks guys for the video.

Maybe I’m late but I have a request which I would appreciate if you can make a video on it’s not related to micro greens though.
If convenient, Would you guys be interested in growing spirulina, I have been reading a lot about spirulina and I have found that like microgreens it’s packed with nutrients as well as proteins vitamins etc it is considered to be a food of future and at one website I read that it is equivalent to eating 5 cups or 5 servings (I can’t remember, read a long time ago, I will quote the websites shortly and get back to you soon)
An advice that that I wanted to give is I saw the microgreens on the shelves in the background, I think a good idea would be to add a mirror to the back so if the light doesn’t reach to the greens, the surface will reflect the light and hence you could be using a single light and it could shine the other trays as well in my opinion
Lastly I have read that there are some grow light that use solar power although you guys might have to look up the different options but I think this website offers some options californialightworks.com and I think the lights can also be programmed to dusk and dawn settings as well as brightness and many more features

The reason we have the white aluminum walls is so that the light reflects onto the greens off the wall to those that aren’t getting direct light. It works well enough for now!
We will see about growing the spirulina but for now we have a huge list of tests and videos with microgreens so it may be a while!

How long are they good after harvest?
Great question! Amaranth are very delicate and only last about two weeks. Most of our other crops will last 2-6weeks but we try to eat/use everything within a week for maximum freshness!

Id try a little less water, and yes your probably bleaching them, straight water should be good enough. Most micro-green do not like to be top watered after first few days. And putting a fan or some air flow over tops, part or all day, depending on speed. It does not have to be fast, and would not suggest fast.
Damping off is a pain! Lol, that’s hilarious that you’ve been bleaching them :) Yeah, we just do 2tbsp of the 3% and 1 liter of water. The main thing for us is temperature and not too much water. If it is too cold, it will get damping off... Same with slightly too much water. It is really a fine line.

Looking good! You definitely have the right idea with the peroxide. I'm not sure the issue with the roots was so much a pathogen problem as it was an overly moist substrate, but it certainly couldn't hurt to be proactive. If anything, the peroxide should help to curtail the likelihood of disease that persists with the use of a very damp medium. Great job! Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the support! We are using 3% and that has worked well for us! Some other growers prefer to use 12% or 35% but we haven’t found a need to go stronger on ours...

Hi I really love the way you present your channel. It is good to show people close up your good and bad experiences.
As I work mostly with hemp perhaps I can give you a tip, if the medium is quite wet don’t give any more water even a small spray as hemp will break down and cause pathogens. I feel the medium and examine closely all over to make sure all areas are nicely wet and I leave it alone. Once the roots form I am very careful with the amount of water I give possibly maximum half a cup of water and I will check three times a day . If the roots are drinking the whole half cup I will give more if there is any water left even a few drops I leave the watering for later as I don’t want problems with the root system. My roots always stay white because of this and I don’t run into any problems.
I hope this helps you I only say this because I had problems myself with over watering and I find if we can help one another it is all to the good. Hemp is a temperamental medium and really doesn’t like over watering. Kind regards M
Have you tried a simple fine grain screen in place of the hemp mat that you used in this video? Such a fine grain screen would be fine enough that the seeds (even small ones) would not fall through and would be reusable! Such a screen would also simplify, I think, the harvesting process.
Great question David! We have tried that before but the main issue is that it drys out very quickly... Also, if you add too much water, it causes a bad smell and makes the seed rot. It is very doable and there are growers like HydroponicGardeningWithBrent that use the mesh a lot. We don't like how challenging the mesh screen is for germination when compared to a grow medium.
@@OnTheGrow Thank you for feedback! I have seen most of Brent's videos and was inspired to take an approach similar to his, but I am focusing more on one that does not use the pump he relies on. I have struggled to master the "simple" broccoli so far. And my problems have been as you suggested with smell and also (I think) with over watering.
Absolutely gorgeous product can’t wait to try this. Interesting I’ve been using food grade 30% hydrogen peroxide in some of the same ways as you. However I was noticing that my growth periods were longer than what I was noticing with some other TH-cam channels including yours and had questions. Anyways I was listening to a podcast by Diego footer on growing microgreens, The podcast was labelled microgreens diseases and solutions and it was specifically mentioned that hydrogen peroxide when applied on a regular basis can potentially harm the cellular structure and developmental process, resulting in stunted growth. However, when I watched this episode it doesn’t appear that you’re seeing the same issues. I will say that I stopped using it as regular as I was previously and I have noticed that my growth/development has noticeably increased in a beneficial way. what is your room temperature and humidity normally at? Be interesting to see a video that you’d put out on hydrogen peroxide versus not using it and if you’re seeing any potential results. What I’ve done is made sure that my medium is always soaked in a hydrogen peroxide solution much the same as what you have in terms of in your spray bottle, and then take my growing medium “biostrate” draining of any hydrogen peroxide water solution and soak it in pH balanced at 5.7 to 6.0 to ensure that I’m not saturating with hydrogen peroxide.
We can try and get a video together on H2O2 and its effects on growth compared to not using it. It is something I would like to know!
Here is some info on our temp and humidity: Our space stays between 75-80F degrees in the Summer (Best Germination Temps) and between 67-73F in Winter and our humidity around 50% or under. We also have one large fan that circulates the majority of the air and small computer fans on each shelf of each rack. All fans are running for 24 hours of the day. We do not pump carbon-dioxide in the space and the space only exchanges air when we open the door a few times throughout the day.

That’s a great question! We haven’t really tried sprouting yet but I believe it would work! These are very susceptible to pathogens so just stay ontop of your cleaning and sanitation and it should be great!

Not to be that guy, but I don't think your peroxide solution is doing much of anything. You're diluting what's probably already a 2% solution down by a further 1:128 which makes it about a 0.001% solution (so 0.00001:1)...and your solution is stored in a clearish bottle with a decent bit of head room in it, so if that's been in there any amount of time, it's probably already decomposed down to water and oxygen.

Yes! So 3LW means 3 days of light weight on top (aka an empty tray) and 2BO means 2 days with no weight and no light (empty tray reversed). Hope that helps!

Okay brother I have one for you to try. You know hemp is way fire retardant,so I'd you use hemp mats often use a hand held propane torch and scortch the roots after harvest and the top. I see u use hydrogen peroxide so you know that value aswell. Just try and see...

hi i want to know,i have been growing radish using rock wool medium and my microgreens can't grow straight up . it keeping fall to some side may i know why thats happen?and what can i do to make it straight in future..
That might be because either your stretching them for to long in black out OR you could be growing them for to long in general. We've never grown on rockwool for microgreens so I'm not 100% I'd first try adjusting both of the things I just mentioned, or even switching to a different grow medium

Varies per crop, Amaranth lasts about 1 week or just over since its very delicate. But other microgreens will last a few weeks. We've never tried to freeze them, so I can't give you a answer on that question...sorry! Thank you so much for watching 🥳
What about changing light intensity? by changing distance of tray to light? Will that increase growth?
Light will absolutely effect the growth... Not sure if going up or down on the intensity will increase growth because we haven’t yet tried it with amaranth. We will try some Amaranth under different lights and let you know in about two weeks!

Great question! We determine what type of tray we use based on what grow medium we are using. For hydroponic mat mediums we usually use the mesh trays and for mediums like Soil or Coco-coir we use the slotted trays so that way the medium doesn't fall through the mesh as much.
You can still use the mesh trays with soil or coco-coir though! You'll just have some of the medium fall through the holes.

Grow a couple of love lies bleeding amaranth plants and you will get a ton of seeds from them. Many amaranth varieties also have big flower heads with tons of seeds too. A quinoa plant will also give you a ton of quinoa seeds. There is no need to buy them from other companies. These seeds are too expensive.

We are about to start growing microgreens in a rather broken down space. of 20sq m. It needs new windows and some kind of ventilation and at the moment is not clean. I see you have 2 small fans. Is that enough for airflow? And what would be the optimal temperature to grow greens? Its cold in the wonter to 1C and hot and sticky in the summer.Im not sure how best to heat/cool/comtrol the temperature and humdity. Any ideas? Cheaply!
Great questions! We have a big fan that circulates the majority of the air in our growspace. The small fans are really just for preventing microclimates on the shelves and keeps the air moving. I would look around at local resell shops or online at people selling used equipment. I would get some kind of A/C unit for summer and a Heater for winter. Have you considered just using a Parmesan cheese shaker? Just seems like an easy and relatively cheap solution to even distribution.

We actually lucked out and got these trays first. I have tried some other germination flats after getting these and everything else is extremely disappointing. Most other trays are so flimsy they can’t handle the weight or even the weight of the soil... We have only had one of these trays crack in a corner after nearly a full year of pretty solid use. I am always on the lookout for better trays though!
Do you only do amaranth hydroponically?
Basically everything we grow is grown hydroponically! We just usually use coco-coir as the hydroponic medium and add our nutrients via bottom watering. As for the grow mats, will use them with most crops. Just not all the time.
Don’t we need to keep the wait on the top tray for the first two days how you do for other microgreens?

It can be challenging for bigger seeds but it still works well. Each grow medium has its own quirks... Hemp holds a lot more water than it appears that it can hold, so overwatering is a concern with hemp during the germination process. Last time we tried sunflowers, we accidentally over-watered and that made our germination worse. We haven't tried again yet, but we will see if we can test that soon!
You need to use bio-compatible Neem liquid instead of hydrogen peroxide!

I think i would skip the 5th day, of turning tray over... and that was before i seen the 6th day. In conclusion, i will not be growing amaranth! Ok now i was noticing the lack of roots beside brown spot? You do not rub your hands across top if micro-greens to remove seed hulls? I do it alot, it feels so good. Now id like to suggest you use less water, they can go dry. In fact i drain excess water... and then you say just that.... Have you tried using a soaking tray, that you drop a tray in solution for 10-15-30 mins, then back to normal tray on shelf. They should soak enough water up into seed mat. When i saw the 13th day, and i see water sitting on bottom, i wonder why you dont get more issues. Pretty please try less water, i truly believe you will have less issues, and growth will stay the same or go up... I havent seen all your videos, and know you try/test almost everything. I like to stand my trays up on an angle, so product falls down into clean area(i use soil). Same i never reuse, either mats/soil or compost. Into garden it goes, its awesome there. I think soil is the best way to go also. I'm working on a safe way to harvest microgreens and grasses grown in soil without worrying about dirt in the product. I will provide the results for you to see. It will probably be around three months.
@@BusterABrown Im wondering if we can use a metal screening for windows and doors, as a barrier above seeds. If the holes are big enough for micro-green to grow thru. We can guild our knife along screen and avoid contact with soil or seeds underneath. May need to find a screen with wider spacings.
@@pseudoscientist4585 Yes you could, but I don't like using any metal unless it is 316 surgical grade steel. Everything else will rust. I tried to order some, but it would have been very expensive and I would have had to order different size openings for the size of the seeds.
I use 316 stainless surgical steel for my mason jars. They are rounded and work for all seeds. I got them off of Amazon. They actually have two rounded screens and the rounded section goes down in the jar. Then I drain the seeds in an Oxo two cup angled measuring cup.
Buy the lids that sell for around 15 bucks, because they don't charge a shipping fee.

What do you do with the medium after you harvest?
If the medium is compostable, like Coco-coir, Soil and some hydroponic mediums… We will toss them into our at-home compost pile and let it break-down and return to the earth. We can use it later in our outdoor garden, but we never reuse grow mediums in our space due to potential of the medium containing pathogens. Also keep in mind that some hydroponic grow mediums are only compostable at industrial facilities (example: Biostrate)… Those mediums, we will gather in a bag over time and take it to our local recycling/composting facility.
On The Grow I just want to say, I love you show. I have been inspired to set up a similar system so I can feed my family fresh home grown organic greens.
I see you have such amazing set up. Will you do a video to show how to set up, example what fan to use and why, what temperature and moisture to keep the unit, where to buy the trays, etc.

Maybe amaranth needs stronger light. I read in garden they need full sun so maybe greater light intensity.

Do you store the jars in the fridge?
We do, but you can also store some crops at room temperature. We've had sunflowers that stay fresh for a few days that way!
