  • 🌻 This is our comprehensive step-by-step guide for growing Black Oil Sunflower Microgreens! This video is packed with invaluable Tips & Tricks to ensure your success. Sunflower microgreens are incredibly popular, but they can pose challenges. Over the years, we've learned that adjusting grow methods for different seed batches is often necessary. In this tutorial, we demonstrate the complete process, from seeding to harvest, using Coco coir as the growing medium. While we've since discovered a no-soak method, where seeds are planted directly, it's important to note that soaking may still be needed for easy hull shedding. Check out our other videos for more on the no-soak method. Let's dive into the world of vibrant Black Oil Sunflower Microgreens! 🌱✅

    hey i tested something and got nice results: when u grow sunflowers like u grow ur popcorn greens (aka no light at all) they sorta maintain more of their nutty/sweet sunflowerseed taste when they reach day 7/8/9 - they also buildup less tanins it seems (that stuff that sticks to ur teeth/tongue and is unpleasant) 😊

    Very informative video! You guys are very thorough in your delivery. We've been researching microgreens for over a year now, and this virus has given me the inspiration to just get started. Our first round of sunnys turned moldy in 2 days. I think it was due to over soaking, over watering, and maybe too many seeds sown.. thanks much for the example.

    Thank you for another great video. With regard to the trays, is the middle green tray a different grade or material? I've read comments from others, not here, about chemicals from trays leaching into the product. Thanks again for the time you take to share your knowledge with us!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the support! It is the same material which is a PP (Polypropylene plastic). PP is generally a pretty safe option and doesn't leech like a PVC or something would. Technically most leeching occurs when plastics are subjected to high heat or high UV radiation. We don't really let them get either in this space because our lights don't put off a lot of UV and the temperature is controlled. Growing outdoors would be slightly more concerning though and I wish that there were more non-plastic growing options for that. Hope that helps!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for the support! You are correct that we pH soak (5.5pH) then water with the 8.0pH filtered water. We were having trouble with soaking in our regular 8.0pH water, so we tried dropping it to the nutrient pH levels and we found that we got slightly better germination... so we stuck with it!

    Q: Why do you adjust the pH of the water for the soak time but use tap water from your hose for the rest of the watering?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ve just found through quite a few tests that it works better that way! We always encourage people to experiment themselves... Try soaking some in non-pH balanced water and then some soaked in the pH balanced water and see how it works for you!

    Another great video guys! I love that you did a full walk-thru to show the process from start to finish. I was experimenting with coco coir alone as you did in this video and found that it dried out and needed to be watered 2x a day like you showed. Another grower told me he added perlite to his coco to help retain water in the medium and now I only have to water it once a day. Have you guys done an experiment with a coco & perlite medium combo?

    • @OnTheGrow

      Vermeculite vs Perlite. I thought one added to moisture retention, while the latter added to aeration? Those two are tricky to characterize, I just learned how to pronounce them!

    • @ClownfishDepot
      @ClownfishDepot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arnold Natürlich Yes you’re correct. They both have different uses. In this case a combo of coco and perlite woks much better than coco & vermiculite. A lot of growers with much much more experience than me are very successful with using coco & perlite so I just follow their lead 😊

    • @brianandlynphilippines
      @brianandlynphilippines 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClownfishDepot I see, yep, loads of success stories to follow, a pioneer need not apply in this field! I mix soil & perlite, but I have blocks of coir to try out at some point and plan to mix perlite into that too. I have a fat bag of vermeculite, but I'm too green to have a use for it yet.

    • @ClownfishDepot
      @ClownfishDepot 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianandlynphilippines I use fine grade Vermiculite as a top dressing on Cilantro, Swiss Chard, and Beets. It really works very well to help germination and also to get rid of the seed hulls.

    Great video also because even if I already have done tons of sunflower I just learned how to get better on my procedure. I was just scared of having the seeds too wet on the first stage so I did not myst water every day.
    Is there any reason why you myst first with tap water and then again with antifungal? Why not going directly with antifungal?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ivan, we missed making the videos! Great question! There are growers who will mist them only with the antifungal and it works really great! This is just one way that we like to do it and really as long as they have moisture, they will germinate well. We just don't like using the antifungal for watering because it takes a lot longer... so we will use the hose for the 95% watering and just quickly top it with the antifungal!

    Once again you have provided a very informative and entertaining video. ICan you explain why you use Ph water only in the soak process? You mention filtered water in the anti-fungal spray mix. Is this just normal tap water with a higher Ph? Also, is there a difference between the normal 3% hydrogen peroxide and the food grade?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your support! We no longer pH balance our soaks. We are going to make an updated video on how to grow sunflower microgreens! We pH balanced in the past to help with the germination rates... As for the difference between regular and food-grade H2O2, food-grade does not have any binders in it.

    Hi - may I know the concentration of the "food grade" hydrogen peroxide that you are using? Your video shows "2 tbsp per 1 litre of water" - is the tea spoon of H2O2 at 35% concentration or 3% concentration? Thks.

    Great video! So if I understood correctly, you pH balanced the water you used for soaking, but then just misted with tap water. I take it you have found it's not so important to water with that all the way through? And how about once you started bottom watering - do you pH balance that? And on day 8, all of the hulls were mysteriously gone - many must have come off in your evening brushing - is that typical?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We’ve simplified it a bit, we no longer pH soak, it was only that batch of seed that needed it. When we bottom water with nutrients, it is always pH balanced to 5.8. It depends on the seed batch for ease of hull removal. Some batches are super easy like this one, others take a lot more work. It’s best to get them off during germination and brush daily to knock off.

    I've been growing a variety of microgreens for a while now but it's just for immediate family or we barter with friends for some real eggs. LOL! I haven't grown my black oil sunflower seeds this way and I find it interesting. They really shot up over those last 48 hours. I don't think I caught why you use the brick in the video. I assume this is to keep the seed in direct contact with the moist growing medium and to help them take root. I push my seeds down into growing medium and the spray them. I black them out and check on them daily since it doesn't take much time. I water the same as you. The food grade hydrogen peroxide (use the same as you) is a must even if one is growing in sterile medium. I use coir. I also use the same lights, but I have 4 bulbs 4' 6500k bulb per tray. I mix them all together and make smoothies or used in salads. Sunflower, peas, and wheatgrass are my favorites. I've grown many but I'm having issues with the oregano. Thanks for the video.

      @@枝実子鍋谷 It has a shelf like of 3 years if unopened. Once opened, it begins to breakdown faster. I keep it stored in the original container in a cool area where I grow microgreens. I dilute it with water and spray on the medium to keep the mold away. It works very well and doesn't harm the plants. It keeps it sterile. I've grown countless trays over the past year, so I go through hydrogen peroxide fairly quick. Also, I use it for minor cuts.

    Hi. Thanks so much for all the information. I am starting to grow microgreens for my family and also thinking of starting a business. Since the pandemic, my income has been greatly reduced. I have a few trays of the green sprouting trays bought from amazon, also a few of the very cheap black 10x20. What do you recommend I start with? I have seen many of your videos and you use sturdy 10x20 trays. Also as far as the growth medium, what do you recommend? I live in Puerto Rico and it is usually very hot and humid. I am doing this in an apartment. I really appreciate all that both have been doing.

    In regard to the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, do you know if it degrades when left in light. I know most HP is in a brown or solid colored container to stop degradation from light. Do you simply mix with the 2 tablespoons of water and leave in spray bottle for later use or do you have to make a new mix for every use? By the way you guys are just fantastic in explaining everything and so grateful for you to share your knowledge. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This video was amazing and I'm totally inspired to grow our own microgreens RIGHT NOW! Is there any risk growing them way you did indoors in comparison to sprouts? Is it possible to grow sunflower microgreens (or any microgreens) outside for someone who doesn't have your type of equipment? Thank you for this video!!!

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We're so excited to hear that you want to grow! They are so easy to grow and not nearly as risky as sprouts. Sprouts are generally in a really dark and humid environment for their entire life. Microgreens, however, are introduced to the light and airflow which keeps most risk of disease/pathogens low. You can absolutely grow them outside, but choose somewhere that only gets half a day's sun or less. Too much sun can make the crop bitter and too woody. We like to grow ours where it gets the evening sun only (about 3-6 hours). You can also place in direct sun and cover with a shade cloth. We will do some videos on outdoor growing!

      We are using the 3% with great results so far! 74F is actually great for sunflowers... Our average temperature has been dropping in our grow space because of winter and we have had slower germination on our sunflowers because of that... At 75-80F in summer is when they grew the best and now at 67-73F they are germinating and growing a little slower.

    Can anyone explain, regarding throwing the soil back into the garden or compost etc.. When you grow vegetables in the garden, what do you do with the soil patch after harvest to sanitize or make it ready for a different vegetable growth?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In a garden, you can till the few plants or just let it die off and plant near it after you have harvested... In microgreens, the majority of the leftover is a massive root structure and stems that will immediately begin to breakdown after the harvest. All this decay is natural, but it is unnatural in its high density/concentrations which is why we compost it separate.

  • @kricketkitty

    Hi thanks for the video. Would you mind explaining more in detail a few steps please...So your marker for taking them out of blackout is the least amount of seed hulls remaining? Or can you elaborate on the point at which this transition should take place?
    Many sunflower sprout growers don't use weights or bottom water, and have good results. What are your thoughts on these methods in comparison?
    Have you done side by side with and without weights and bottom vs top watering to come to your conclusion that your method works best?
    Regarding watering, is it correct that you are top watering until you reach the remove from blackout/add grow light stage, then you switch to bottom watering? Can you please explain the reasoning behind this? Other people bottom water from the get go, others don't bottom water at all, as mentioned. When I top water, I get mold. I tried bottom watering, and flooded the tray, not understanding specifics that you should not really do it until roots have formed. Coco coir was impossible to use as it was either desert dry or a swamp. But now that I see the roots aspect, it makes more sense. People make a lot of videos without explaining the why of the how. Which would save a lot of time and effort. I haven't perfected bottom watering yet. Before I studied your video multiple times, it seemed based on my experience, that you needed a tape measure to tell how much water to add or you risk flooding the tray and a clear tray to actually see the water level. If you are only supposed to bottom water after roots can reach the water, that makes more sense. But you still need to be careful or you can flood them out.
    Again, many people don't do any bottom watering and have great success. What's your thoughts on why this would be? I agree, flexibility is important, and with such an enormous range of growing principles for the same crop, it would be good to understand how such a range is actually working. Is it the microclimate variables in each environment, temperature, humidity, air quality, water quality, soil quality, seed karma? haa haa..
    Many thanks

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions! We cover all of this and much more in great detail in our eBook. As for weight, we do have videos on our channel where we show the results side by side of using weight and not using weight, so you can see the results for yourself. Also, test it with your own seeds and grow method/environment as you could get totally different results than us.
      As for bottom watering, you will learn to be able to visually tell how much you need. We suggest using a measuring cup so that you can use exact quantities... the goal is to keep the medium moist, but not overly saturated. Each crop requires different amounts of water as each seed grows at different rates. It’s something you really just learn from experience. You will over-water and under-water a few times till you get it right...
      I hope that helps! 🤗🌱🌱

We started out of our garage and all we had in winter was a small space heater that kept it above 50F. That worked really well in the beginning, but we wanted more control so we had a growspace created for it! Excited to hear how your grows are going!
