Fantastic review, was by far the most informative ioniq 6 video I've seen thus far! Plus props that you're able to film and capture all those details off the rip without any cuts, quite impressive.
It's a great vehicle, have had my Transmission Blue Limited Ioniq 6 since May 1st. Great build, road handling and performance. Got my $7500. kickback by leasing and paid $400. to end lease! So glad it doesn't look like another Tesla on the road. So nice!
16:19 If you have a look at the front door inside, its shape is curved so that you can spread your leg. And that’s why they moved window switch into middle to make inner door’s gap as little as possible.
This is such a great video. So much detailed info I wasn't aware of. I was convinced I wanted the RWD SE for the maximum EPA range, compromising on winter drivability as I live in an area with snow. Now, with the front axle disconnect in ECO mode, maybe AWD SEL is the way to go. Looking forward to the range tests in ECO mode!
The ioniq 5 is the same way with the front motor disconnect. It still doesn't get the same range as a rwd though. Any time the cruise control is on it disconnected the front motor as well
No experience with winter range yet, but with my Ioniq 5 AWD over the last few weeks with mostly local city driving in warm weather I've been getting efficiency that would put me at around 300 mi on a full charge. And I like to hammer the accelerator every now and then to remind myself it's an EV :). City driving should be comparable on the Ioniq 6, and highway should be much better with the far superior aero.
@@mousepad3000 I have had my ioniq 5 for 2 winters now. The range definitely drops by about 10-20% on the highway depending on temps obviously. I also found that city range is way less just because we make lots of short trips heating up the car frequently.
I’ve owned an Ioniq 5 for about 4 months now, and have taken two 700 mile road trips. One of the biggest reasons I chose it, is because I specifically did not want a Tesla, and I wanted 300 miles of range. I think I worried it too much about range. When I go on a road trip, at 52 years old, I’m ready for a break every couple of hours anyway. I generally charge that often whether I need to or not. And this Hyundai/Kia platform, charges wonderfully.
@@tonyn3227 I’m happy you’re pleased with your Tesla. All EV enthusiasts owe that company a debt of gratitude for pioneering the segment. Also, we’re spending big bucks for these cars, and we should be comfortable with our choices. However I have to disagree with your comment on charging infrastructure. Both of my 700+ road trips were a breeze. This week I drove from Vegas to San Diego, and had ZERO issues charging. The EA 350 KW chargers got me on my way in 20 minutes, (+\- a few depending on state of charge, but never more than 25) and while I did encounter one “dead” charger, I simply moved over to the one next to it, and it was all good. @@tonyn3227 it’s possible that issues are geographically dependent. Maybe they have their act together better on the west coast than the Rocky Mountain region. Great review. I was intrigued a little about this car as an Ioniq 5 driver but ultimately I'm a bigger fan of the 5's design language. This one just doesn't have the same cohesive design in my opinion.
As a fellow happy ioniq 5 driver, I must agree. The 6 concept looked intriguing and amazing. This… I am not quite sure what to think of it. I immediately fell in love with the ioniq 5 and had to have it. Efficiency be damned!
The Iconic 5 is probably one of the better styled traditional format compact SUV / cross overs. But personally I find this format of car too boring in general. Tesla broke the mould with the model Y but it looks too much like an egg for me. The Model 3 is such a design success that I believe it has triggered a resurgence in demand for sedans in general. The ideal format for me is the Model S, with the style of a sedan and practically of a hatchback.
This is the first SUV I've ever owned and I largely agree with you about the format. As a new parent, however, I do like the extra cargo space. :) I previously drove sports coupes and sedans exclusively.
With our Ioniq 5 AWD in Eco mode the front wheels do engage from a stop to about 12-15 mph or when ascending a very steep grade. At least according to the power distribution graphic on the instrument panel screen they do. I agree that the actual range difference between the AWD and RWD models of the Ioniq 5 is less than the official numbers. Lastly, a fixed unshaded glass roof is not a plus for me.
@22:50: Thanks for revealing your personal height (about the same as mine); this is crucial in estimating how comfortable the car would be for a prospective buyer.
I wish the base tires and rims were available for all trims and the others were stand alone options. When I road trip to see family fast charging is not close at all. To me the full glass on the Model 3 is a negative here in TX so that is not an issue.
Seeing your comment about the headroom . . . I was worried about that due to the sloping rear end. I checked the stats on the Hyundai web site and the SEL without the sunroof has almost 2 inches more headroom, front and rear, compared to the Limited. I will be interested in what you find when you start testing the efficiency - the numbers seem considerably better for the Ioniq 6 than the Ioniq 5, some of that may be due to the lower drag coefficient but I also wonder about the wheel/tire selection on the 6 vs. the 5. Clearly the 18 inch wheels on the SE make a big improvement in efficiency. Thanks for another great review - can't wait for the driving review!
I like the switches in the middle. A full glass sunroof like the Tesla is a disaster where I live, would need a shade, like the Ioniq 6. The rear bumpers is a bit cluttered, otherwise I think it’s more desirable then the model 3. I like the shape, but that is an individual preference.
1:45 According to the Tesla configurator the destination fee is an extra $1,390 on top of the $42,990 vehicle price. Edit: The $250 order fee that used to be deducted from the final invoice is now an extra charge as well. So the total price excluding sales tax and incentives is $44,630 for the cheapest Model 3.
@@unsafelyunfit7761 It was like this in the past. But if you don't believe me, you can just open the configurator, scroll down to "Continue to Payment" and klick on it. On the next page you will see the following summary: Vehicle Price: $42990 Destination fee: $1390 Order fee: $250 Your Model 3: $44630 That is as new to me as it is to you. I bought a Model 3 in December and the order fee was refunded with the final invoice, but it seems like they changed that. Why would they not say it in their price summary if you get the money back with delivery of the car?
Kyle, you mentioned that your/our efficiency drops using I pedal. I own an Ioniq 5, limited 320 hp…When I first started driving it I used I pedal a majority of the time when driving it. Then another owner mentioned that using level 2 your efficiency will increase. I normally drive using eco, with level 2 regeneration. Although I have never let the battery go lower than 35%. ( I normally charge to 89%.) When I crunch the numbers the range would be 290 to 295 miles. I live in Northern NJ and use preconditioning, thank God it works.. Electrify America is spotty at best and is the weakest link with chargers often not working at capacity, with some units purposely lowered for what they call a program update. It has been over a month and this alleged update hasn’t been installed. There are no 350 kw charges within 35 miles of my home and EA has no updates planned that they will share, when asked. Have you done a test with level 2 regeneration? Could you, I would be interested in your results. Btw, I love the car. Thank you for doing such thorough reviews. They are much appreciated.
I love the Ioniq 6, but I have yet to see a SINGLE photo or video of the U.S. or Canadian versions of this car with a U.S. or Canadian license plate ON THE FRONT. I am sincerely interested in how and where it attaches, and if it interferes with either the forward-facing cameras or the cooling vents. If someone has a link to such a photo please post it here. Thanks.
The heat pump in our EV6 heats immediately, cools immediately. In addition the elect seats heat and cool immediately as does the steering wheel. This compared to our American brand cars that take forever.
Great question, Cake Batter. The US Ioniq 6 configurator says a "battery heater" is standard, but I cannot find anything about a heat pump. In the 2022 US version of the EV6 and Ioniq 5 a heat pump was standard with AWD, in addition to a PTC heater for instant heat. A heat pump was not available at all in 2022 US RWD models.
Just a guess - the route planning doesn't know where to plan your second charging stop until it knows how much you charge it at the first stop. Not as comprehensive a planner but I could see it as a programming option.
those aero flat wheels has been trending with holographic rainbow glitter sheet stickers mod with new-tro trending currently in korea. actually preferred wheel for KDM
It dirves me mad that the EV6/Ioniq 5 doesn't have the ability to LOCK the car and close the trunk with one button on the hatch/trunk. Glad to see it here. I'm interesting if I can retrofit to the EV6 as the button size looks the same.
So, the SEL AWD edition is rated at 270 miles combined. The Hyundai website shows the combined and highway MPGe rating and it loses about 9% for highway from combined. That 270 becomes 246. You will charge at about 10% so another 27 off so you end up at 219 for your first leg. Then you can only charge to 80% quickly so another 54 off the top so you are at 165. So roughly charging for 20 minutes to an hour every 2 hours of driving... Even in the most efficient vehicles this is what it seems to always work out to.
What is the width of the trunk opening. This is not listed anywhere. It looks quite wide and I would love to compare it with the width of the honda fit. The fit's opening is just enough to allow so much utility and this is the kind of thing you never think you will use but probably will if you have kids. Things like a stroller with a box of costco groceries beside it and such.
love the channel and the vids! Beauty is subjective for sure as I really dig the backside of this car, I think it looks cool! I agree that I wish they didn't use cheap plastic on the key, the interior doors etc. For a $56k car, I would want better.....Im looking to get an EV after my Alfa lease ends this year and really torn between these ioniq's, Tesla, mach e etc...ugh
I have a 2014 Chevy Volt and will probably be looking at replacing it in about 5 years. And yet the options available still don't seem cost-competitive.
Gotta love smart park. A feature that allows you to park between other cars that do not have that feature and will not be able to get back in their car. I would call it "Smart Dent" because of all the dents and keying people will get with this feature. Maybe in your own, tight garage at home but anything else is asking for damage unfortunately.
whoa is that color Green...? (I like it already) given the Black, White, Silver, paint standardization embraced by OEMS the past 20 years you don't see very many Green cars any more. it was all the rage in the 90's.
“This is a much more premium product than the Tesla. No doubt about it.” From what you showed in the video you didn’t actually convince me that is true. Simple doesn’t mean that it isn’t “premium”. I have no issues with the “premium” feel in the interior of a Tesla. It definitely is minimalist but that doesn’t make it any less premium. Those cup holders and window switches definitely make me think “econobox” for that Hyundai.
100%....Premium isn't only materials (which in the I6 is plasticky and gross) ...Premium also equals ease of charging and speeds, ease of drivability, reliability, app, navigation, comfort, etc.
There's nothing premium about a Tesla.... It's like those Chinese Premium head phones at the dollar store. It's just a name that means nothing. I could have a Harmon Kardon, Bowers and Wilkins or somebody's premium audio system... Premium means generic.
Lots of little things removed from Ioniq 5 to Ioniq 6. The Ioniq 5 has rubber pads for the cup holders, it has a lid for the frunk and also the hood has sound proofing. All gone on this Ioniq 6 Limited. Nice that the Ioniq 6 has the aluminum pedals, I had to buy mine from South Korea to add those to my Ioniq 5. Steering wheel buttons are swapped left/right vs Ioniq 5. So it's like the Kia EV6 now. Cruise controls on the left, Media on the right.
I'm glad that model 3 is getting competition, I know sedan aren't popular but I'm pretty sure they're lighter to build than SUVs. Can't to see how the VW id5 compares when that comes out.
I actually like the look, front AND back… although, for the price of that limited, I’d be disappointed with the fit and finish and plastic everything! I’d be looking elsewhere!
I have an Ioniq 5 SEL and I was looking at the limited. Unfortunately jumping from SEL to Limited is less about build/materials and more about features I didn't care about anyway. The 20" wheels on the Limited Ioniq 5 aren't exactly inspiring either.
I'd assume for the EPA range they have to test it in AWD mode since a large part of the upgraded spec is the AWD, so if you were to have to use it for bad conditions that would be the range you should expect from the AWD model.
I think they’re making a mistake copying the model 3 by making it a sedan, a hatchback is what everyone wants and complains about the most on the model 3. Kyle you said it yourself, at this price the car has to do everything, and the trunk is a deal breaker for many I think.
Wow, looking at the Trim/Range/MPGe table, the I6 has a narrow optimum for power and weight. Std range output is less efficient than larger battery, and any added options notably knock the efficiency down. Guess headwind and cargo will all sting range a fair bit. Thankfully it starts at an amazingly high efficiency for this size vehicle!
Hi Kyle, love all ur videos for their quality and quantity. With the AWD configuration of the Ioniq 6 you said that the front axle can be disconnected on highway driving, does the the Tesla AWD LR have the same economical function available? :)
And it doesn't have the Tesla supercharging network (that's changing as they open to CSS but it will take some time). Do you think the Hyundai Ionic 6 is compatible with CSS retrofitted Tesla superchargers? That charging port is concerning. Would be an interesting video!
Its a good thing that the number of EV models out there continues to expand. I would guess the knowledge base of EV adopters is growing as well. That's my polite way of suggesting this video would have been just as informative and useful if it were cut down to about 20 minutes.
The AC charger might be very cheap and as you chose the cost effective option it spat that out, what if you choose the fastest option, or maybe there is a min charger speed option.
That was going to be my comment as well. Kyle chose cost effective, and AC charging would be cheaper than DC fast charging....Hopefully, the driver can set minimum charging specs, or AC/DC as another said, and the route planner will do a much better job.
Why. Why did they change which side the steering wheel controls are compared to the IONIQ 5? Could this be a right-hand-drive spec steering wheel by accident? Perhaps there won't be much overlap between IONIQ 5 and 6 drivers, but that just seems like an odd choice.

Just a guess - the route planning doesn't know where to plan your second charging stop until it knows how much you charge it at the first stop. Not as comprehensive a planner but I could see it as a programming option.
Range is affected by the giant wheels on the higher trims AFAIK. Like 50 extra miles if you go with the smaller ones
More like 50km
those aero flat wheels has been trending with holographic rainbow glitter sheet stickers mod with new-tro trending currently in korea. actually preferred wheel for KDM
Kyle and Pop's Connor make EVs fun.
What ro you think of the location of all the buttons, switches and knobs on the Model 3 compared to this? 😅 Many of us like those kinds of things.
I prefer my Ioniq 5.
Except, it has been in the shop for about a month with an onboard charger problem (ICCU). 🤒
It has a very unique look which doesn't make me want to buy one
Finally something other than a lifted hatchback. Love to own one eventually
It dirves me mad that the EV6/Ioniq 5 doesn't have the ability to LOCK the car and close the trunk with one button on the hatch/trunk. Glad to see it here. I'm interesting if I can retrofit to the EV6 as the button size looks the same.
Looks like they tried a little ford sierra cosworth on the rear end and failed miserably.
Even in the most efficient vehicles this is what it seems to always work out to.
should have been a hatchback like the model s
Long range version aero wheels are beautiful. Very unique.
Tesla is hard to beat. Many things stand out. The Tesla sound system is phenomenal.
Could the range difference be down to the extra weight of the additional motor and all the additional gubbins that need to be connected to it?
I have a 2014 Chevy Volt and will probably be looking at replacing it in about 5 years. And yet the options available still don't seem cost-competitive.
In 5 years your choices will be interesting..if as goes as planned by all manufacturers...heck you might even get to choose from byd lineup.
You aren't required to park your car in every space you can fit.
And that’s why my tesla has sentry mode. Just put the Tesla into a small space and if anything happen, you have it on video.
@@brianb5723 it also helps if you park like a rational person, and then someone parks next to you like they have no sense.
I love the Aero wheels! Those are a huge plus IMO.
Dodge challenger hellcat has a steering wheel that lights up the hellcat logo in red! It’s sick.
whoa is that color Green...? (I like it already) given the Black, White, Silver, paint standardization embraced by OEMS the past 20 years you don't see very many Green cars any more. it was all the rage in the 90's.
That KIA green in the TV ad where the guy is cleaning up the beach is the color we want. What an amazing look.
Kyle might not want to admit it, but the "secret sauce" for the classic Ioniq's and Kona's better efficiency is they're both FWD only.
I would believe the AWD is heavier and also tires seems a tad wider than thr RWD
Limited really living up to its name.
Nice unbiased review.
I wonder if they moved the window switches and other stuff off of the door so that the door panel is universal worldwide regardless of drive side.
I'm glad that model 3 is getting competition, I know sedan aren't popular but I'm pretty sure they're lighter to build than SUVs. Can't to see how the VW id5 compares when that comes out.
38:25 "A full tour" I think showing the trunk access and storage was missing.
Because no hatchback is a no-no.
Oh, I'd love to see you take 87 to Payson and/or 89 to Prescott.
how does the audio compare to the lucid air? You said the lucid basically had no subwoofer
I do think that's the color I'd have. Very nice (in this color) from all angles in my opinion. I just wish the silver bits were matte black.
It would have looked to European or German, boring. Its Korean its meant to be distinctive, not like all the other cars in its market segment.
I actually prefer to have my key fobs light. I tend to have it on a key ring with a bunch of keys.
I'd assume for the EPA range they have to test it in AWD mode since a large part of the upgraded spec is the AWD, so if you were to have to use it for bad conditions that would be the range you should expect from the AWD model.
Those intrusive headrests are a deal breaker for me. Can't even flip them around due to the hard plastic on the back side.
love the look of this car.
And it doesn't have the Tesla supercharging network (that's changing as they open to CSS but it will take some time). Do you think the Hyundai Ionic 6 is compatible with CSS retrofitted Tesla superchargers? That charging port is concerning. Would be an interesting video!
Robocop will like to drive a Hyundai IONIQ 6 police car. I'm a fan of sci fi and futuristic technology stuff.
Great review. Looking forward to seeing its charging curve. Gosh that route planning needs a lot of work.
I really appreciate your thorough and detailed reviews. Are the slides you included available anywhere, or are they from a press packet?
I wonder if the route planner put the AC charger in because you selected "cost effective" instead of "fastest".
Why. Why did they change which side the steering wheel controls are compared to the IONIQ 5? Could this be a right-hand-drive spec steering wheel by accident? Perhaps there won't be much overlap between IONIQ 5 and 6 drivers, but that just seems like an odd choice.
