Hyundai Ioniq 6 Long Range - how far can it go?

- The official WLTP figures for the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Long Range is 614 km (381 miles) but is that realistic in the real world?
To find out, Gav grabbed one and took it on a long drive in very New Zealand conditions, featuring lots of high speed driving, plenty of cold weather, a bit of rain and some wind as well.
The results speak for themselves, and now Gav wants to try again - but next time with a different approach!

AWD Ioniq 6 18" wheels here in BC, Canada, in the mountains - 514 km trip with 7% battery left. Nice car, good review.
Around 485 km, yes. 20" wheels.
The Ioniq 6 is definitely an impressive car, but also expensive. I've not got the same range out of our 6 year old Ioniq 28kWh, but I've certainly got the efficiency. Yesterday we drove 119km from Greytown -> Masterton -> Porirua in the rain with outside temps around 5'c and climate set to 20'c and got 13.2kWh/100km. Last month we drove 107km and got 12.5kWh/100km, and you can pick up an Ioniq 28kWh for $24k
I used to do a twelve hour drive from NRW in Germany all the way down to Austria to go skiing and the trip was always broken into two hour chunks. Every stop was for a minimum of 15 minutes with one for at least 45 for a good break for lunch. Non-stop we could have got to our hotel in a bladder busting ten hours but who wants that? Anyway, I get the feeling that if I charged for even a short period each stop this car would do the trip without any issues whatsoever.
So would a tesla and it would not be so ugly 😊
@@NaughtyGoatFarm eww but then you have to support ol' musky, and design is subjective
Only serious road warriors will drive 7+ hours without stopping at least once. I know many who do it, but they are the exception not the rule.
Thanks for the review Gavin. Enjoyable as always. Keep up the good work.
Hey it's my pleasure, mate! This was a bit quickly recorded and assembled so not as many lame jokes this week (which could be a good thing) but the car was the star!
I love the seated heats in my ModY. 😉
Caught that too. Great video though!
I bought this car two moths ago, partly based upon your evaluation of the range and performance overall. I actually find it a very comfortable car to drive, in Australia the suspension may be tuned a little different as Hyundai engineers came to the 'land downunder' to check out our road conditions. I really LOVE this car, so much so that I actually take it out for a drive just to enjoy its ride. It is so lovely to ride and a quantum leap from my old 2005 Ford Falcon station-wagon. Well done Hyundai 👌😎😁
Great & entertaining review as always Gav 👍
I didn't think that I would watch the entire video instead of just skipping to the end, but all the information and presentation had me really interested (especially because I was already considering buying this car).
Great video and thanks for doing this type of experiment.
Cheers from a "Swewi" who get very homesick from the views from this amazing car. We have ordered one in Sweden but it is a long wait. Really like your reviews Gav, thank you!
Swewi !? Long wait? I ordered mine on a Thursday. Got it on a Friday two weeks later. Advanced AWD et.c, et.c.
That was my Friday night sorted. Thanks Gavin
Pretty impressive range, thanks Gav
Freaking loved the review and the format of it!!!!!❤❤❤
I'm a decades long fan of cloth seats. You never have to worry about sliding inelegantly out of the car onto the ground after a long sweaty drive in summertime and there's no sticking to the seat, suffering excruciating pain as your skin tries to part ways with your legs either upon egress.
Totally agree, I can't believe people pay extra for leather which is worse in almost every way.
In other countries, there appear to be options of a light grey or a beige interior. Talking to a BYD salesman (I know, not Hyundai but an example), I learned that we can’t have those colours in NZ because only black will sell here, so they try not to import anything else
@@alexshepherd Can't understand why black is so popular. You always used to be able to get light coloured interiors in Aotearoa and most went for those. I eventually got sheepskin carseat covers. Absolutely brilliant in both hot and cold Kiwi land, summer or winter.
Just to tally up the numbers in those imperial units:
532km = 330.6 miles
13.2kWh/100km = 21.25kWh/100 miles = 4.7 miles/kWh
Way Less Than Predicted
LOL :D
You're the boss, Gavin, I love your videos!
I’ve ordered a new Ionia 6…. Looking forward to driving from Glasgow to Blackpool on a single charge (250 miles approx)
I got similar economy on a recent road trip but I have the SEL RWD with the 20' wheels here in the US. Mix of city and highway miles (around 60-65mph) and I averaged around 4.6mi/kWh = around 350 - 360 miles! Had myself, wife, and small dog plus some luggage and climate to 1 fan speed (also crazy how powerful/strong it is at a low setting.. I've never needed it higher)
Also, great video! Engaging and fun. I would only disagree with some of the ratings.. performance would be a 7.5 (because it still rips when you put the pedal down in sport mode anywhere between 20 - 50mph because of the instant torque) and an 8 for comfort. Even with these bigger wheels/rims, it is super comfortable and soaks up bumps very well. I wonder if the suspension is tuned slightly differently here in the US.
Great look at real life highway range, thanks 👍
My pleasure, mate. May your weekend be blesse with many potatoes. :) -Gav
@@EcotricityNZ Cheers Gav, by the way FYI your channel is my go to for EV knowledge. I need to understand these things, charging, plug types etc because it’s only a matter of time before I will need to be reviewing E motorbikes, I’m looking forward to that I might add.👍
Hi, thx for the test ride. Well done. If you are riding alone then I would like to recommend to use the "Driver only" setting of the climate control. To reach the 614km range you have to reach 12.6kWh/100km. But it will not be possible with the cruise control. You have to drive yourself and "sail" as much as possible. And... it is possible to meet the WLTP value 🙂 Kindly Stephan
Haven't even finished watching and I have to stop and say YES FINALLY someone else who prefers cloth seats! I hate leather/fake leather seats. Breathable, comfortable - not cold and clammy or blistering hot depending on the season. bleh
Oh mate, I am SO WITH YOU ON THAT. The feel of a soft cloth seat on a hot summer's day is great, and it's warm to the touch on a cold winter's day! You can't lose! -Gav
Had a 2021 Hyundai Kona EV elite that had 600km! (WTP 485km) of charge when we left ChCh. Even after travelling about 40km around Timaru we still had 50km left of charge when we hit Dunedin
Great vid and impressive range. Like this car
loved seeing Mr. Lee....dude rocks a polo....genius.
A great review Gavin
Personally I really like the look of this car, yes, even that back end. If it had more of the open interior that the Ioniq 5 had I'd be sorely tempted. Thanks for the video, very enjoyable :)
Great video, I tow a large trailer to Taupo from Auckland and then back to Auckland with my EV. I think you didn’t need to slow down on the way back to Auckland as it is always more efficient Taupo to Auckland (downhill) vs. Auckland to Taupo (uphill) so your predicted in Taupo will be wrong as you were driving uphill to get there and not allowing for the downhill drive home
Not bad that’s an impressive journey bro
Another data point is that I drove a base Model 3 loan car from Auckland to Papamoa (243km) in May, in the rain, using 45% of the battery, and achieved 115Wh/km average (can’t put the photo here but I do have proof of what the car said).
The $64,000 question is whether I could have achieved over 500km range from that cheaper, relatively small-batteried Model 3, but anyway, I was impressed at what it could do :) After a steady 110km/h on the expressway, it told me to stop in Hamilton, but I bravely ignored it and got home with 2%
Since the WLTP is always more than you're likely to get, I've been describing it like this:
"What's the range on your Model 3, Rob?"
"The stated WLTP range, Way Longer Than Probable, is 495km"
Cracking spudscore!
Interesting about the maps thing I have an iPhone but don't use Apple Maps, my default is Google Maps. Forgot to say did you use coast-mode(regen 0) at all particularly on downhills? I drive my classic 28kWh Ioniq I coast where I can and use the flappy paddle regen all the time. That is good efficiency though your average speed was around 80km/h??
Wonder what Gav going to do with the new Volvo and mercedes-benz with there epic ranges… drive to Australia?
Great video as always but for me having to drop to 85km/h isn’t something I’d be interested in doing. Still I know that isn’t the point. The reality is you’d give it a boost in Taupo and then drive however you wanted
Could you also put efficiency as miles per KWh pls. Just a quick note on the screen perhaps ?
For your test this time, did you use much heat? You should try to repeat it again in the summer with AC to see how much that affects your range.
"Seated heats" 🤣
Hey, Gav, excellent review and test. My MIC Model 3 AWD has done 550km, on a warm ish night, at 90ish km/h, on a long country drive, so similar. The 3 appears to be rated at 13.8 km/100, but the EPA 602 is a joke. Typically, it does 16.5, in SE NSW, with 10-15'c ambient, at 100km/h. Luv the car though - drove across Oz last year - easiest I've ever done out of 15 trips (over 50 years). We ARE living in the future, but millions of #ICEHeads don't get it!
What's the Model3 #Spudscore? No doubt, lower ...
BTW I'm on 18" wheels, Michelin PS4, at 3.0 (42psi).
@@Kiwi_Dave But can you charge it at home ? 90% of the time people charge their EV while they sleep. It takes 3 seconds to plug it in and 3 seconds to unplug it the next day. Sitting 5 minutes by the car is like an eternity compared to 6 seconds ! Not to mention the drive to the gas station.... another 20 minutes at least.
21:16 as always man as always 😁✌️
Great review as ever.
If you can do Akl-Taupo without charging imo that’s enough. Stop for lunch and can go again. The ability to not have to stop for lunch is quite expensive! So it’s halo range that I wouldn’t pay for.
Could you give the NZ dollar value in $,£ for your international audience - just so we have an idea of approximate cost in 🇬🇧🇺🇸 👍
I like the body, it has that Euro style.
I’d love to see you do a drive like this, but partner up with another EV or even an ICE vehicle. Compare fuel efficiency of the lead car vs the car “drafting” behind (at a safe distance of course). Switch places for each direction of the test, assuming the terrain is roughly equivalent in each direction.
Did you use any down hill regen?
Stock footage cracked me up 😂
Reason for the lack of wireless Apple carplay and Android auto, is that TomTOm is doing the Navi for Kia & Hyundai, and they dont wand them to connect wireless.
Where I live in Canada we have 30deg C in summer and -30 deg C in winter so the range of that car will be all over the map during the year
13.2 kw/100km is amazing for going down the waikato expressway. Most non-Teslas have rather poor efficency, relying on larger batteries. I'm rather jealous of that range.
this is a more ideal estimate even tho i skipped to how much range he got....he drove it to near %10 SOC which is the recommended amount for daily driving and still got over 300miles..well 330 to be exact...
Gav have you seen the graphic of EV car range over time not that long ago range was like 80km
My Nov 2021 Model 3 has a lifetime average of 131 kW/km with 54,000 kms on the clock.
I always thought that the Koreans would seize this opportunity and do something impressive with E V's !
Well done Hyundai ! Brilliant stuff.
So, and where is Toyota? Dropped the ball !
Toyota is probably designing a true green solution.. EV's are for the uneducated AF
Never had a problem with leather seats and its a lot easier to keep clean than cloth . I thought you could cool electric cars before you got in anyway so no more burny legs .
So you averaged 67.6km/h for your journey. Considering the Waikato Expressway is 100-110km/h you must have had some really slow bits! 13.2kWh/100km is pretty good, but I get 13.0kWh/100km day in, day out from my Model 3rwd on NZ roads. So for $30000 less (after rebate) I’ll accept having 100km less range. I have test driven the Ioniq 6. Not impressed.
The top-spec IONIQ 6 in Aus is cheaper than the Long-range IONIQ 6 in NZ.
1910kg isn’t that heavy - in comparison to a similar ICE car. And actually 77kwh battery isn’t that big.
Very slippery drag coefficient
Hey Gav , I have not seen this car sold in US. Maybe someday?
Hi Rick! I saw a review from a guy who took one long distance in America so I suspect someone somewhere is selling them in the USA! All the best mate. -Gav.
Leather seats do get sticky for sure
Great review and seems to be the kind of EV to convince the nay sayers to dump the pump and all that with a spectacular PSC.
Now we just need the pricing to back off to ICE levels and the job will be done.
Dump the pump.. why? You do realise EV's are not better for the environment surely..
With 18inch wheel's and The drag coefficient I would expect it to do this Range disappointing you slowed down
V2L adapter is outrageously overpriced lol. You can buy a V3 Tesla Wall charger for less than that (and that has a ~$300 Type B RCD in it)
94k NZD is 87k AUD that costs more than a model 3 long range
Gavin: what's been the reaction to Tesla pulling the right-hand drive Model S & X in NZ? I think Tesla treated those customers in right-hand drive markets pretty shoddily after having had their orders on hold for so long, pulling the availability with virtually no notice. Personally, I think Tesla should have fulfilled those existing orders as matter of honour, ceasing to advertise the cars from now on.
As for the removal of the long range Model 3 from the website, this may have been down to low order numbers, making it a nonviable product.
Long range isn’t as important as reliable & fast charging stations. I did a 12 hour ( 6 hrs there & same back with ~ 2 in stopped traffic around Birmingham 🇬🇧 last week. Charged 3 times - for about 30 minutes each - when I wanted to stop for pee/food/stretch legs anyway.
Long range is old-think mindset; means hauling a heavy battery about. Think about it 👍
Seated heats. LOL
99% of NZers travel less than 30kms a day. It's like buying a petrol car that has a 3,000km range. Totally redundant.
Nice car. I suggest you use tennis balls as a standard unit of volumetric measure.
Nah, the #Spudscore is fine!
dont care long range ev its city car park side air port
Replaces the family ICE car?... It costs almost $100k and creates the same emissions as a ICE car from electricity production to charge it... so yeah what a pointless POS
Will you be switching to Hydrogen cars, like the manufacturers?🙂
Not any time soon mate. Hydrogen doesn't stack up financially or ecologically at the moment. -Gav
@@EcotricityNZ Not to mention that charging is rather sparse (an understatement).
Won't happen in our lifetime. Fuel companies won't provide refuelling stations until there are cars, and only Toyota (Hyundai less so) have been flogging that horse for a decade.
What manufacturers? Honda has abandoned it. Hyundai about to. Toyota is realising it's mistake. Hydrogen filling stations closing. Dead end technology for cars. Physics says so.
Norway are pulling out hydrogen refueling stations and putting in EV chargers. Hydrogen refueling pumps are 20x the cost of a EV charger. Bus fleet companies in Norway trialled hydrogen but have gone with battery electric. A hydrogen refueling station can only refuel about 8 cars before the station tanks need topping up. A hydrogen car is almost a quarter of a million USD. Hydrogen tanks and gubbins take up more room giving less passenger and luggage spce. Nobody is making clean hydrogen at scale. Hydrogen is super hard to contain and transport, even nasa had issues on Artemis. If nasa can't 100% control hydrogen sure as hell ol Trev the local mechanic is gunna blow up his workshop.
Dual motor has very low range……20” shortens range further. Pathetic……
300 miles on a charge is Junk!
21 min video ?! WTF. 10 max - cmon man.
great review, i just don't know why they keep making EVs so darn ugly. they all look like dolphines.
This is one of the ugliest EVs you can buy today. There I fixed it for you.
