I love all of your videos, but this was one of my favorites because the quilt fabric was from clothing. I am bound and determined to make more quilts using recycled and rescued fabrics. That is of course when I make headway on my fabric stash. Thanks. And I am one of the lucky people who get to attend the retreat in April. I am so excited. 😍💯
I have been quilting over 20 years and I have managed to avoid triangles by making my own designs or finding patterns without them. I haven't found a triangle I can't mess up. I don't have the kind of presser foot that you can sew down each side of a center line and I bought a ruler set like yours (it came with the largest one broken, just my luck) and I still can't do it. I've always loved your projects, and, since you are so positive that a beginner can do this, at 76, I'm going to go try one more time. Wish me luck.
It sounds like a ruler is your best option for making perfect HST's. Any ruler will work, you can also draw the center line then lines 1/4" from the center line like my bestie does. She sews perfect HST's now, it takes her a little more time but she doesn't care and makes beautiful quilts. Thanks for watching :) !!
Learned so much. Thank you!! I just started sewing half squares. I had been afraid of them because of having to make the points match. I'm gonna keep on sewing a bunch of them with a cream background and all shades and patterns of Fall fabrics. I know I want to make a diamond pattern, ( I think I heard you call it a pointed square). Can't wait to finish making enough for an oversized throw.
Thank you for this! I’m assuming you’re LDS, but I could be wrong. I’ll be praying for your friend’s family. I’m so sorry for your loss, grateful for the plan of happiness!
Great tips today. I made 3 memory throw quilts for my friends 3 children. I used fusible interfacing to stabilize the shirt fabrics, even though they are cotton or cotton blend, for stability and ease of sewing. I used my HST's to make a leaf pattern. Light shirts one side, dark shirts the other. I've also completed a family tree baby quilt using the shirt fabric from parents, grandparents, great grandparents in the center of a leaf with coordinating fabric in HST's around. HST's are a very versatile block and I find myself making them more often than not in my quilting projects.
Practicing my hst skills. 365 for the temperature quilt.I was hesitant to take this on.They are easier than I thought, and I'm so happy how it is turning out.
Thank you for reinforcing my knowledge of HSTs. I am a newer quilter, and i am working on making them match and meet perfectly. I really appreciate your explanation and demonstration. You do it very well. YOU are so encouraging, that means a lot. This quilt became so very beautiful. Im sure it will be treasured. You are so kind. Thank you for sharing this with us.😊❤ Huggles and Spoons Always 🤗🥄🥄🥄🥄🦓🪷🧵✂️🪡💡
I liked the first layout, for some reason it felt soothing. You could have made her a pollow from the T-shirt but the layout you picked out is beautiful and the tee shirt worked out wonderful. I'm an old Chick also. I used to be a type "A" personality ..... now I'm a type "zzzzzzzz" Naps every day, I'm retired now.
100% agree. I taught my daughter her first quilt. 6 1/2 " hst's. It was brilliant, I was so happy for her (there will be a second generation in my family, I am the first) my absolute favourite block. She is now working on her second quilt. Love the hst and flying geese. So lovely to see this third quilt. Thankyou Di and Engineer. Hugs, Chel 🌸
How awesome that you’re passing on our quilting craft Chel🌸👍🏼 But even more exciting is that your daughter is on her second quilt, it’s a win-win😊❤️🐥 hugs to you🤗
I love the engineer’s option and I loved the first layout you had. However whatever layout you do the daughter will adore it! It is all about the memory of her mom and the warm hugs and love she will have with this quilt. Beautifully done!
You are a great teacher and I love watching your videos. I am 76 and learning to make quilt tops but I am tying mine too old to learn quilting.Tried it but it was like trying to write upside down, so not for my ragged brain. Best wishes to you
Thank you, Linda😊❣️ the good news is that you’re still doing something and it doesn’t matter how you’re doing it. I tell my family that when I die, I’m going to be in the middle of something😂. I’m not, and it sounds like you are not, the type to sit still, and do nothing way to live life.😊❤️🐥❣️
This is a beautiful quilt, the blue half square triangle quilt is also beautiful and well loved. Thank you for being you. Also the Engineer still has the wit.
Shout out to Ian , he’s an awesome Quilter, content creator and person ❤. Great tutorial/run down on the HST… my favorite blocks are the simple ones… they end up being the most versatile and always look wonderful no matter how they are used. I love this series of memory quilts you have done, it is something I have always wanted to do for others but was too intimidated. Now that I’ve watched your videos, you’ve made me feel it is a task I can take on. Thank you ❤
I love the pattern you chose it works so well with the fabrics. That center piece looks so nice what a keepsake for these children. I am so impressed with your skills!
Thank you, Di! I am going to make the actual fabric into a sandwich and hang it like you did yours. Maybe I will bind it in purple! (my favorite color) I think that will dress up the grid.
Oh Di,That is a beautiful quilt. Excellent advice and tutorial or half square triangle! You are so sweet. I love the T-Shirt worked in the middle tip! Thank you!
WOW! I watched you 1st time today. I was like, ok, another WTB influencer 😢. But, I watched all 42min of said video. OMGoodness. You are a great teacher and witty too. 🎉 review 2nd video: this video - You continue to engage me with your teaching style. To boot, loved the "commercial" on pinning points. ❤
Many Thanks,,,,You have helped me tremendously! I avoid half square triangles like the plague but after watching you I am going to Attack! I Love where you put her Tshirt block! These kids will cherish their quilts❤ Ohh and I can’t wait to see your new space🤗
Thank you very much Renee. Get busy on those HST’s, then you won’t have to avoid them.😂 Just think of the options you’ll have from now on. Thanks for watching.🐥😊❤️
I love stars, too⭐️ I didn’t have enough space to set one up to show you so I didn’t do it. It would’ve been a huge one with the size of those blocks. Thanks for watching buddy.😊❤️🐥
I like the arrangement that you decided to use, Di❣️ Thanks for sharing and reminding us that we don't need a difficult pattern to create a beautiful quilt.
I use to greatly dislike hst but with practice I can tolerate them now!! There sure are a lot of ways to lay them out. I love your finished quilt top. Thanks for sharing!!
I really liked yr first layout best. It just seemed more calming and when the child is thinking of their parent it should be calming now that they're gone. Still pretty tho I thought the first was best. Just saying. Thanks tho.😊
What a beautiful quilt, love the layout you choose. The t-shirt square in the middle sets it off for me, such a meaningful quilt. HST are my favorite also. Thanks for another wonderful tutorial.
Love love love this quilt Di. I use hst’s more than any block in our quilting encyclopedias. Hope you get back into your sewing room soon. We have moved 4 times in the past 7 years so I know how frustrating it can be!! Happy ❤ day!!
Your comment makes my statement more true, that HST‘s are the number one building block of quilting👍🏼😊. I can’t wait to get back into my sewing room. Marie, 4 times in 7 years😳 you’re very resilient. Not sure I could do that at my age😬❤️🐥
Off topic...sorry! I didn't know who to turn to, except you. I am just setting up my new sewing room, that has room for a fair sized design wall. (yay!) I have the foam stuff up there, thanks to my daughter, but now it's up to me to get the flannel up there. I bought 2-1/2 yards of Kaffe Fassett 2" grid flannel for the wall. I was just in the midst of straightening it out and I'm not sure I am doing it right. I know it's just fabric and I could always buy most, but I don't really want to do that. (It definitely needs straightening!) Do you have any suggestions. Thank you in advance. Claudia (a sister Sister Chick.)

As always, great video.😢 Love the way it came out. Endless possibilities For memory quilts. Thank you for sharing! I have been looking for ways to put a plaid one together from my dad's shirts and a t-shirt one from mine. ❤
You’re right Mary, there are endless possibilities for memory quilts. I have different inspirations on each quilt, it takes a lot emotionally out of me🤣😂❣️ thanks for watching my channel😊❤️🐥
This quilt is impressive, Di! Thanks for detailed instructions! I appreciate you telling us how to do that center block, too! I really like your choice of design! I also liked the pattern you said you used in a baby quilt! Have a great day!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm am a beginner quilter and really want to learn as much as I can and all tips and techniques are are appreciated always ❤ 💖 ♥
Very interesting that I was just sewing 1/2 sq triangles today. I was having trouble squaring them up, as part of the HST was 2 different pieces and I wanted to make sure that they were squared up too. Your video made it easy to do, and I made perfect pinwheels.
I wish I could draw those hst lines and sew those seams and square up your squares as fast as you do 😀. I want to be like you when I grow up.....ha ha ha. I'm sure I am much older than you already.
Aloha from Hawaii!! Ian is a fantastic quilter!!! I don’t believe a little old piece of minkey could intimidate him!!! When it comes to quilting I am a pre-beginner and half square trials do intimidate me!!! But after watching this tutorial i will have to psych myself up and try this half square triangle thing!!! 😀😀😀😀😀‼️‼️
Great video and quilt pattern. I recently made a quilt with that design. I was curious what quilting design you used. I ask because I only did straight lines, outlining the color changes. Now I wonder if it's not enough. I wanted it symmetrical.
Thanks for asking Karin with an “i.” I haven’t quilted it yet, but I’m probably going to put on something with waves or curls. My rule, and this is just my rule, is that I don’t always put geometric quilting on geometric lines when I quilted I’ll certainly post a picture of the quilting. Thanks for
I love your magnetic boards in the background!! I bet they double as food storage too!!! Translation: fridge and freezer!
Those magnetic boards hold The Engineers Dr Pepper 0 and his steak 🥩 🤣 love your name for them 😂 Thanks for watching .
I love this beautiful quilt in memory of a daughter’s father. So thoughtful.
Thank you Stephanie :)
" Enginer Approved" is definitely sought for!!❤❤
Yes, that’s a good thing to have on a quilt, 😂 . Thank you for watching.😊❤️🐥

Go for it! The world should be flooded with silly geese😊💙💙🐥🍊💙😊🐥
I love the way you added the “extra” block. Great job.
Thank you, it took some thinking to come up with that one. TFW😊❤️🐥

Oh my gosh! I love it! I bet the family member did also!!
It’s still got to be quilted but the family saw when they picked up the other two and they really liked it. Thanks for watching😊❤️🐥
Recent sewing, I've fallen in love with the chevron pattern.
The Chevron is a great pattern Anita. The first time I remember, seeing it in a quilt was in 2009. Thanks for commenting.😊❤️🐥
Getting back to the basics is even good for us who have been sewing for years. Thanks!!
you’re welcome, TFW😊❤️🐥
HSTs are my favorite, too! You can do so much! I love how you incorporated the t-shirt. Perfect! Thanks so much for sharing, Di! Good seeing you!

The trouble with stripes and plaids, if the aren't fussy cut, they cut up crooked.
The layouts and large HAT are fun.
Thanks for the video.
Yep and I made an effort to cut straight but man, working with clothing is a little tough in that situation. Thanks you for watching Mickey😊❤️🐥

When it comes to quilting I am a pre-beginner and half square trials do intimidate me!!! But after watching this tutorial i will have to psych myself up and try this half square triangle thing!!! 😀😀😀😀😀‼️‼️
ALOOOOOHA! Princess,
Don't let HST's intimidate you, they're pussycats once you've done a couple. Keep at it Princess! 😊💖🐥
HSTs are so versatile, but I have an awful time sewing through so much bulk.
Sorry about that, I just love them. Thanks for watching.
Is it important when making the first stitching line to sew the second stitching line on the halfway triangle in the other direction?
I don’t think so, it’s just naturally the way I sew it together. If it is I’m not aware of the reason why. Thanks for asking😊❤️🐥
Btw, I really like the patchwork basket sitting next to the sewing machine. Do you have a tutorial on that? :)
It’s called an inside outside bag. Thanks for watching.😊❤️🐥
Thank you :)
Thanks for
@@sisterchicksquilting thank you the response. I would love to see the finished quilt.
Love it❤
Thanks, Chrissy😊❤️🐥
