      Maybe also some real world examples (not waving a hand in front of face). My experience is different - and no doubt because my personal use case is different. I don't have my hand around in front of my face much. But I can see I'm not alone. These issues will affect some more than others, but we could all benefit from content actually targetting helping people with the issues.
      But what would be far more constructive would be to highlight an issue, and shout about it to the moon if you like, but then equally show people how to make best of it in the meantime.
      On my x-t5 (FW 3.01) plus really old FW on 16-55 shooting in the forest with lots of obstacles, I found eye-AF was consistently finding the head, but it thought ears and ventilation holes in climbing helmets were eyes at times. So I just disabled face detect, rather than taking the shot anyway and hoping in actually pressing all the way and hoping it would be ok. With the high speed burst shots, this was of course harder to control.
      In this tricky shooting situation with high speed subjects coming towards me and past me through foliage, C-AF the whole time, eye/face most of the time except where I spotted the issue In mentioned, mainly mechanical shutter, I really wasn't going to complain about the 80% hit rate I got, with 97% at least trying to focus on the face and not some other object. Of course I'd much rather that 97% was of actual hits with critical focus. If I'd taken the viktrox 75 I would have had much worse results I'm sure.
      I really wanted to compare with the new FW in the same environment, but didn't have enough battery to download it, unfortunately. I beg to differ as it was happy to transfer images to my phone twice the size of the FW file... but it is what it is, maybe another time.
      The optical flaws of the 16-55 were unfortunately rather apparent in this environment, but that's another story.
      No video so can't really comment on that. Pal2tech's video on it reflects more my experience, and I'm hoping the FW update also.

    Bro, FUJIFILM should straight up HIRE YOU to do QA Testing for their AF algorithms. It's INSANE we have to PICK a FW version to stick to an optimal feature.
    I have MAD RESPECTS for you, man! I know you care about Fuji because no one is willing to do an in-depth testing for the sake of it.
    Its more quick and stress free to simply buy another brand/jump systems.
    If only there was someome that would go to these lenghts to test the bird AF on the X-T5.
    I love my X-T5, love its design, its tilt screen and the in-camera raw conversion. I don't plan to sell it ever but that does not mean I want FUJIFILM to get stuck in their "look at our pretty colors with inaccurate AF" status.
    Guess if I want to do serious birding I will have to look somewhere else. A shame because I have been really tempted to buy the XF 150-600MM.

    • @JakeChambersOy
      @JakeChambersOy 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      100% agree. The build quality is noticably worse compared to the 2 and 3 models. It feels more hollow and plastic.

    • @brownbear100
      @brownbear100 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JakeChambersOy I honestly think it's largely a case of perceived quality versus actual quality. The x-t2 was riddled with issues, both build quality and internals, the x-t3 was better but then came the x-pro3. And all these cameras "feel" more robust and for some people care about the whole made in Japan thing, but it's not 1985 anymore, it's just marketing. If anything Japan made goods have got worse. The x-h2 has noticeably more heft... but as with previous years, that doesn't necessarily mean more reliable. But the camera to go for you war zone photographers out there.
      I hope not to do it too often, but I knocked my x-t5 off a wall 1.5m onto rocks and into a puddle. Did no damage at all apart from a tiny nick on the rubberised coating.
      As to build quality that matters, the paint scratches more easily, or just rubs away (on/off switch). But once the first few areas of rubbed off paint appeared, I stopped noticing. But it will upset some. Some have had an issue with the anti-glare on the EVF rubbing off when cleaning it, but Fuji has fixed on warranty and it seems like a bad batch of screens as it's not affecting everyone. I'll take that over screens that need replacing due to dodgy wiring (x-t2 and X-pro3).
      As far as the AF is concerned, compare to the x-t2 or 3 and it is much better. But also put a newer lens on those older bodies and they get a boost too. I think what has really moved on is the competition, though, highlighting Fuji's biggest weakness. Mostly if you are used to those bodies. It affects some more than others depending on what you are shooting and how - which some people get very precious about here. But will Fuji ever get to Sony or Canon levels - I doubt it, and it's unrealstic to expect it. It's simply operating on a much smaller budget. It will improve I'm sure, just as it always has. Honestly the biggest thing Fuji could do now is to properly test firmware before releasing, all this negative coverage could have been avoided or at least just limited to the usual why isn't my x100v as fast as my Sony A9 III. And an indication of planned improvements wouldn't hurt either. At some point improvements will be reserved for future models, though, and I think we are approaching that point soon.

The comments blew up with many fanboys telling me from only using regular object tracking, to shooting center point AF-S then recompose, to buying a MF film camera with split-image focusing (which I have several since the late 90s). The admin of the group ended up deleting my whole post within half a day.

    Thank you for your objectivity and dedication on this subject. My hope is that videos like yours can create enough traction so that Fuji can no longer ignore it or dismiss it as bad faith/unfair criticism. We'll all be happy if Fuji undos the issues with predictive autofocus and introduces actual improvements for an objectively better hit rate.
    These cameras can do it, as you demonstrated with the early firmware. It's not an impossible task. We just need Fuji to pay attention and stop messing around so they can go back to the AF basics without the unnecessary and unreliable complications that negatively affect the AF hit ratios (those complications are only any good if they improve things, and clearly they don't). If these videos go viral, the likelihood of us all receiving updates that actually improve things in the AF department increases.

    I don’t think the issue is the Xmount itself, well, the newest version of the Xmount. I think the issue is the software for the lenses. All lenses are programmed to communicate with everything from an xpro1 to an xh2s, inheriting all the limitations of that initial mount.
    Fuji's dilemma is that it doesn't want to invest in the monotlithic task of updating all previous Xmount bodies and lenses to software that'll work across decade's worth of cameras, while taking advantage of the new tech and not bricking the old bodies that still get so much love and push on Fuji brand recognition. They'll look incompetent, loose face and investors, for this massive lack of foresight.
    Thank you edvard for making these issues glaringly obvious to the Fuji community, you'll always be known as the Joan of Fuji. In the end you'll be canonized as a Saint, but for now you'll suffer the wrath of DP bird pics, fanboys and the like. God's speed bro

    Really happy you made this final video! As I own the X100VI and it got the same "focus fix" update with 1.11, I did the AF-C tracking test you did with this camera, where I focused on a white cup with a high-contrast logo on the front, and then placed a translucent glass half-way between the cup and the camera... Tracking was fine, but when the box got close to the glass, the X100VI didn't jump to the glass, but instead went crazy and started racking focus CONTINUOUSLY on EVERYTHING in the frame, and since the X100VI's focus motor is also loud, I could hear it going nuts, all while the focus box stayed green on the cup with the logo... Moved the camera further away from the glass, and it settled back down on the cup. Oh, and this was in PHOTO mode, I don't even dare try it in Video mode. Those "people", looking at you CameraObscura and Saving Private Brian on fujirumours on the thread where this new FW was announced, I wonder what you two tools have to say for yourselves now. I'm glad you still like your Fuji's edvard. I still enjoy my X100VI, but that's only the case when I use workarounds to actually get the focus to work, so no consumer who pays this much for a camera with "class-leading AF" in 2024 should be expected to do to get decent shots.
    At this point I HIGHLY doubt Fuji will EVER fully correct the disaster that is their AF system, but only time will tell. Another fantastic video Edvard.
    I'm not a Fuji fan boy, and I don't shoot video, but I'm finding that continuous AF+face tracking on my X-H2 (so long as you leave eye detect turned off) is now super sticky and get less confused about what it should be focusing on. This a perfect (for me) setting for my kids running about erratically (tracking sensitivity +4, speed tracking sensitivity +2, focus zone switching auto, AF mode set to wide/tracking, and pinpointing your target in the small frame first, and using BBF) etc as let's face it, trying to nail eye AF in that situation isn't really needed.
    I'm still finding eye detect very erratic for faster moving objects. At my daughter's sports day in a running race at a 3/4 angle it got focus for the first 2 shots, before jumping into the trees for the next 9. It just refused to come back. For slower or more predictably moving objects it works better.
    In short, I'd say it's huge improvement over what we had, but I'm still tired of making excuses. I shouldn't have to configure it every time I want to track something slightly different. All I want to do is point the box at something and have the camera track it. I don't want it to switch to anything else, I don't want it to change its mind, I don't want to have to tell the camera how I think it might be moving. 'See that and follow it until I say otherwise' is all I'd like. If you can't sort out eye AF, don't offer it. I'd rather be stuck with face only and not even have the option of tracking eyes, rather than setting the camera to track eyes and getting nothing but a bunch of blurry shots.
    Up until yesterday my Fuji gear was ready to get packed up and shipped out as my OM-1.2 was way more accurate/reliable, but with v6.0 it's been given a stay of execution. For now...

    I think maybe Fuji addresses issues based off of sales. I don't think the XH2s or XH2 sold as well as they had hoped and they just don't put the time in to fix the issues. The XT5 did sell well, but they have moved onto other cameras, like the X100VI. I also still think like you, that PDAF is not working right in these cameras. There is no way to fix that AF with firmware. Their X-Speed 5 processor just isn't what they said it was. Maybe in future cameras they will catch up by developing a good processor. If more people like you do not speak up, Fuji will continue to release cameras for the hipsters, and just pretend the AF isn't a problem. I've already seen a small TH-camr refer to your videos and his excuse was "I only shoot landscape so eye AF isn't important to me". That's how Fuji fanboys are reacting. If you only use zone or pin point AF, with no subject detection, you can get about the same AF as a typical CDAF camera. But the fact that Fuji pushed the XH2s as "just as good as Sony" and "you don't need full frame now" while giving us really poor AF, is a testament to what Fuji really cares about. No amount of Film SIms, video functions or ergonomics, or frames per second will ever overcome the horrid AF. Fuji is more aimed at street photographers, and that's the lane they should stay in. Leave actual professional cameras with good AF to Sony, Canon and Nikon. I'll never get the 2 years I wasted on the Fuji system back.

      @@lionheart4424 Film Sims are fine if that's your thing. I used them for 2 years. However, it is the biggest reason people use the system. I never hear people talk about the amazing AF, it's always "the film simulations keep me in the system so I deal with the shortcomings". I dealt with it myself. I got some amazing shots with the XH2s, XH2 and XT-5. But Fuji claimed from day one that the XH2s AF was as good as Sony and that we didn't need FF. That was false. It was "ok" out of the box, but got worse over time. My many years old Sony A9 was as good or better than the XH2s. I do hope they get it figured out, but it will not happen with current models using firmware updates. They need a new processor. If you don't need the subject detection to work, Fuji is just fine. I couldn't justify a $2500 body to have such bad AF though. The new Nikon Z6III is also 2500.00 and blows the XH2s out of the water. Fuji should heavily discount these models and revamp their processing power.

    Hi, thank you for your work. I've seen some other youtubers and their test also prooft that V7 is even worse than V6. Tracking in video is not working. It's really a shame and I wish I had not invested all my money in fuji system. If I could afford it I would chance to sony.

      It is not worse than v6, Its the same + they fixed the eye issue where it will ignore it and focus on chin or what's closer to the camera.

    Would be awesome if you got a Sony A7RV or something similar and did some rants on that, would make some of us feel better about our Fujifilm purchase 😂

    Nobody in the history of TH-cam ever did such a comprehensive AF test on Fujifilm. And the known "influencer" Fuji shills keep praising this shit or don't say anything at all. Im really curious what pal2tech will put in his upcoming video besides smiling and jokes. Or Roman Fox, or that Reggie guy... :D

      @jcar4522 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I've seen Roman be critic with some aspects of the xh2s but yes, i would like to see him talking about this. Im not expecting anything from Pal2tech. Only subscribed to see when a new upgrade cames. I think he is trying to get paid from Fuji and he should... No bad words ever to the brand, thats why i prefer watching Edvard. Even CineDailies or imtongue are here complaining

    When I used xt30 I needed to assign 4 custom buttons just for the focusing system (face eyeaf on/off; zone and area mode; sensitivity and speed; back button af so it doesn't hunt) oh including the MF/AF switch when none of those work then there would be 5 in total. When that camera only has three custom buttons and the quick menu cannot touch.

    Thank you for this extensive AF firmware review. Fujifilm must start by removing the predictive algorithm first.

  • @yoooser
    @yoooser 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Glad you made an update on this firmware. We were planning on to move from Sony's ecosystem to diversify in case one company goes wrong, much like Fujifilm's case
    I was thinking of trying Fuji, but your video came out just in time to the point we're gonna be looking for other next choice: Lumix.
    I love fuji personally for hobby but for professional work is definitely not.
    Thanks again edvard, and good point on the "prediction" part of the hardware.

    Apparently it's time to create a petition demanding fujifilm, to make a normal autofocus. Distribute it to all resources to increase coverage and send the results to their office. I can't understand why they can't make it work, let them fire the programmers who fail to do their job time after time.

    Regarding the microphone gain issue, it also drove me insane but I found out that when you restart the camera it just takes the audio settings from the photo modes, so if you set your gain there as well then you'll have consistent gain when restarting. It's a dumb und unnecessary workaround but it works, but how the original issue hasn't been fixed is beyond me.

    Thanks for those videos Edvard. Shame on you fUJI... I am glad that I did not update my X-S20 to 2.01 and I am not planning to update to 3.0 too. I will update it when You record the next video saying that Fuji AF is good enough... so probably never again. I have my X-T3 for photos and both X-S Fujis for video, bunch of lenses and do not want to switch systems but if they will not start listening their customers complaining on those serious issues, they will loose current and future market share within few years...

    I cant thank you enough I realy believed that Xh2s has done some job on AF. You saved me good amount of money. Thank you thank you thank you. Yes you have accent but as long you know what you talking about it doesnt matter. Look at me I dont even know how to write in english hahaha. If I could tell you I would continue in testing AF of other cameras. And when Fuji brings new firmware test even that. I think you can see your self how much people like your job. What about Panasonic Sh2x did they realy improved the AF or Sony or Canon is their AF so good. I am telling you there is so much qustions unanswered. Compare AF and find the best AF for each year people will love it.
