    *** For anyone in 2021 with RetrOrangepi with SNES generic chinese controller ***
    The fix at min 8:00 worked for me after spending many hours like a noob.
    I had to use the normal keyboard and guess which keys were working in order to move around the menu.
    I am using a RetrOrangePi SLIM 4.2, and my SNES china controller wasn't being recognised when playing any NES or SNES game.
    I believe the issue was with the gamepad profile which wasn't being created or maybe was incorrect, so retroarch didn't have any joystick configuration available, despite the fact that I could use the controller to navigate around the OS.
    Thanks mate :)

    Thanks SO much. I kept having trouble where the auto-configuration for one controller wasn't getting saved/passed through to retro-arch, and all the help kept saying to use retroatch-joyconfig.
    You kept saying "in case you need this for some reason.." - I am the one the needed it.
    Thanks again! I

    I was able to configure my snes controller just fine and it works fine... but all of a sudden the 'start' button became the reset to the games rather than 'start' + 'select' - I've followed all the instructions in the video and no change. Runs across all types of (only) snes roms as well. Thanks!

    I've never been able to get it to auto config the controls through emulation station.
    But this helped me because of the second half where you explain how to configure it through retroarch.
    I really really wish they would fix the autoconfigure feature in the new versions.

    My USB controller and keyboard will both work on the menu screen, once I turn a game on, only the keyboard will work and when I exit the game nothing works at all. If the screen saver turns on I can hit a button and it will turn back on, but I can not use the controller or keyboard. Any information how to fix this?

    is there an updated video on this topic for 3.8.1? there's no register retroarch controller or going into gui and going to setting and then input. my snes controller works fine in emulationstation, but shits the bed when i load super mario world or anything else.

      Thanks! I was trying to get my SNES controller to work with an sub adapter. It feels weird playing old games with PS3 controller type. But After much troubleshooting I switch my SNES controller to what I thought was the player 2 side of the 2 adapter plugs. Wallahh! Now I got this issue with the damn sound. Gotta spend the night trouble shooting that. Sound goes in and out. Like it gets loud then gets soft and blares when you enter underground levels of Mario world. I'm a newby noob on this kinda stuff. Kinda of fun trying to figure it out. Learning quite a bit to.

    I have a question. I have a retropie handheld. The SD card that came with it is not in English, so I bought a SD card with everything in English. When I put the new card in It boots up just like original and the games play fine except the dpad and buttons seem disabled. I have to plug in my USB controller to play, and that defeats the handheld point. When I put the old SD card back in it plays fine using the portable dpad and buttons. So, how to map so when the new SD card is in I can play using the buttons and dpad on the portable?

    Herb I hope you can give me some direction on how to set up my Xin-Mo usb controller. I am uding a Pi version b+ with RetroPie version 3.4. I finally have all my ROMs in Mame4All and it recognizes the Xin-Mo. Problem is I want to set it up to play Mortal Kombat which uses 3 buttons for punch and 3 buttons for kick, but the setup only sees 2 kick and 2 punch. If I try to change the config file it still does not change. Any ideas where I should start?

    I aint sure but the Ipac 2 seems to keep on giving the not configured issue... I changed it from UDEV to SD12, same issue. But the controller works.. single, two players, short cuts to save and load games.. So could this be a false error? Or a driver issue with the Ipac 2...

    I have retroarch 1.6.7 with a "zero delay" dragonrise inc generic USB joystick controller board for my arcade buttons and joystick..
    None of the arcade buttons work but the joystick responds to up down left right up down perfectly..
    Keyboard and mouse (generic wireless USB keyboard and mouse) don't respond.. Mouse Cursor works fine.. No left/right button responses.
    Any config tweaks to get the buttons working..
    Found the config file for retroarch in the android/data/retroarch.. Similar to your config file in the black screen, however I couldn't find the player 1 referenced to change over to USB.
    Found reference for driver which was set to xmb. Possibly thinking to change that to udev.

    Just curious what keymapping you used in ES for your keyboard. You went through that real fast like you've done it a few times. Also, does RetroPie auto-configure anything in RetroArch based on you keyboard mapping in ES, or does it stay with the default RetroArch keyboard settings?

    • @HerbFargus
      @HerbFargus  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only ever use the arrow keys, a and b, and start and select for my keyboard. So the rest I just press random buttons for cause I'm too lazy to wait for each button to skip. Whatever you configure your keyboard for will be what its configured for for retroarch. So in my case I make enter a and right shift B. Not the greatest for gaming but only use it for the menus so it doesn't matter to me.

    • @BenWlson
      @BenWlson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, thanks.. I was wondering about the auto-config, because the keyboard already works in RetroArch without setting anything up in EmulationStation, so I was wondering if RetroPie would change that if you added keyboard config to ES.

    • @HerbFargus
      @HerbFargus  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it has default keyboard configs but they are overwritten when it's configured in emulationstation

    • @BenWlson
      @BenWlson 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couple more questions for ya:
      What do I need to do to delete the keyboard configuration in ES? I found keyboard referenced in both es_input.cfg and es_temporaryinput.cfg in /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/ (what's the difference in the two?), and if I do that, will retroarch revert to it's default keyboard config or will it revert to the last ES assigned config?

    so I bought an N64 controller and I mapped it in the beginning. it works fine until I start a game. I have super Mario all star, I can move around on the game selection scree but once a choose a game to play the controller stops working. I tried messing with it but I couldn't get anywhere. I tried using my keyboard to play, mapped the controls, and I ran into the same problem. now my keyboard controls are all messed up and mapped to snes style controls and i don't how to configure it back to how it was. I have to problems and I haven't seen anyone with the same problem as I. am I screwed?

    Just ordered a raspberry pi 2, I was wondering if you are using a usb hub what determines the controller load order?

    • @HerbFargus
      @HerbFargus  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on your controller and power supply. My power supply is 5v 2A and it has no problem with my snes, f310, and keyboard. If you experience lags or frequent connection interruptions its likely you'll need a powered USB hub.
      As far as the load order, the video preview image shows the order, unless of course you set up Bluetooth controllers which then may affect the order somewhat as the Bluetooth dongle can have two players in one USB port.

    I am not sure I can do what I would like, but here goes. I have a bartop arcade with Joystick set Player one in USB0 and Joystick set Player 2 in USB1 per your instruction. Also I am running the newest version of retropie (v4.5.1). I also have a USB hub connected that is accessible from outside the arcade so that I can use native controllers for the various emulators. This works perfectly for all the emulators and joypads except one... Atari 2600 with a USB controller of the original joystick. There is just not enough buttons to setup ,Start, Select, hotkeys. So the question is, Is there a way to have 2 separate controllers configured for Player 1? Idea would be that I could press the start, select, hotkey on the Joystick set Player one in USB0 on the cabinet, and then play the game with the old style one button joystick. Any help you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.

    My controller works in jstest, and emulationstation recognizes it and is controlled by it. I cannot get the thing to work in any emulators, though. When you manuallly configured a controller in the RetroArch GUI, I tried to follow along, but when it came time to program the buttons, it wouldn't register anything I was pressing. I did but I use different controllers for different emulators, and the hot keys I programmed in retroarch only work for some of them, is there a way to program more than 1 controller at a time so that they all stay saved, and in the mame, arcade, intellivision, collecovision, atari, and a few others the hot keys dont work at all with any of the contollers, so in order to exit the game i have to pull the plug.

    Hi herb i have a question. I'm using 2 n64 retrolink controller. With the EmulationStation controller input menu , I can't bind a ''select'' button since there is none on a n64 controller. Do I have to manually edit the config file to let's say the Z button is input_enable_hotkey_btn = 8 and the Start button is input_exit_emulator_btn = 9 . I would need to test this first because now I always need a keyboard to exit emulators which is not convenient ! Thanks

    • @HerbFargus
      @HerbFargus  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whatever button you configure as select will be your default hotkey enable button so you can configure your Z as select or a different button altogether, but if its anything that is not configured as select it needs to be configured manually as you said. You can use ssh so you don't necessarily need a keyboard

When launching n64 roms only the retrolink joypads are used ( which his what I want ) but when launching snes or nes game it is still using my n64 controller instead of my xarcade controller... the only way to get it to work is to go in the back of my arcade cabinet anf unplug the n64 controller. Is there a way to set or force a specific controller for an emulator / roms ? Thanks s lot and sorry for the big text

      Yes I showed it in the video where you can swap the player index from 0 to 1 in the system based retroarch.cfg
      You can see more on system based overrides on this page: github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/RetroArch-Configuration#custom-retroarch-override-examples

      +Herb Fargus fine i will try this. Do you think there will be a feature to change it on the go ? In the same menu to change the emulator ( x menu ) you could change player 1 2 3 4 on the go that would be sooo usefull. !

      It's an edge case that I doubt will be implemented in the code as retroarch configs can already be configured through the retropie menu, you can submit it as a suggestion on the retropie forum and get feedback there. (Also since unplugging controllers is a simple thing to do)

    Hi
    I have an issue and wondered if anyone could help.
    My issue is that my controllers work fine in most emulators except Sega M.D where controller 2 is player one and controller 1 is not recognised.
    If I swap the controllers USB around I can get controller 1 to work in Sega M.D emulator but then only player 2 works in Mame and the rest.
    It seems as though the Sega M.D doesn’t recognise USB 0 as an input device.
    If I configure my controllers on USB 1 & 2 rather than 0 & 1 and then configure through RetroArch and bind the new inputs for user 1 and 2 will I break the mame controller method or should this fix my issue ???
    Hopefully I explained enough for you guys to understand the issue and help me.
    Thanks
    Joff

    Great video, thanks. I was messing around for an embarrassingly long time trying to get an 8bitdo Bluetooth controller to work. I ended up also having to go into the snes-specific options (was trying to play Mario kart) and set the input to udev as well to get it to work. My f310 still doesn't work but I have ideas.

      Is there a default setting to go back to very beginning when I first got my SD filled with games and first got my PI? I did not have any problems until I connected my PS4 wireless controller to my PI. I found out that PS4 wireless controllers have a virus or bug so I was going to order a XBOX One wireless controller. But when I went to use my iBUFFALO controller, it would operate the Emulation Main Screen and play all my systems except my NES system. Now after following the video, not the guy or the videos fault, I messed up somewhere and now can't use SELECT+START to exit any of my other systems like, SNES.........What did I do and what can I do to fix this? Going to talk with my Techs on Weds. but would really like to figure this out on my own. If anyone can help, hit me up. Thank you.
