I have a question, just learning about retro pi. Once again troller is set up. Does it save or do you need to set it up every time you’re going to be playing that emulator?
If I already have the the controls set up (joy sticks with buttons) can I add one of these n64 controllers to the empty USB spot? And will it mess up the other controllers if I program the n64 one? Thank you.
Yeah you can set this up in the empty spot. It will only configure that specific controller that way so you shouldn't have any issues with your other controllers that are already configured.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Do you know how I can fix this? if I play Mario kart 64 when I press the B button for acceleration and press the trigger to shoot items It restarts the game. Thanks again.
@@kilowrocks91331 unfortunately if you remapped it would just move that to another button function. That's the downside with n64 on retropie. You have some weird mappings and it's just not perfect any way you do it.
To avoid accidental Hotkey-activations (I'm using Emuelec, which has at least seven combinations by default), I have mapped the Z-Trigger to "Select" in Emulationstation. In Retroarch, I have mapped the "Hotkey enable"-button to "Start" and the "Exit emulator"-button to "Select". Works like a charm.
@@JML1987 Well, it has been some time since I did this. The Android box and N64 controllers were a gift for a friend and I have no access to them at the moment. Please comment here again on April 21. I will visit him then.
Hey! I have an iBuffalo 16-button dual analog USB controller! Could you please please show me how to configure it to RetroPie and make use of the extra buttons?
Hey I’m not at all familiar with that controller but if you could link me to a picture of it I could probably take a closer look and determine how I’d go about setting that up.
Any idea why the "b" button would've stopped working in the RetroArch gui with the n64 controller? Can navigate that menu fine with other controllers, but after the n64 controller was set up in this menu I can no longer use the "b" back function. The controller is set up fine for this emulator now, but the RetroArch gui is no longer navigable with the controller. (EDIT: the button itself works fine and works within the emulationstation menu as well as within game, just not in the RetroArch gui) Additionally, any idea how to setup the controller mapping for other emulators such as the "rice" variant (which often work much better than the default).
Hey there, I'm not sure why this happens. I have heard of it happening to some. I haven't experienced it personally. You may need to add a usb keyboard to navigate the retroarch menu. I believe that would enable you to navigate it but of course it is an inconvenience. Do you mean other emulators for N64 or other emulators in general? Anything N64 related should share the same mapping setup unless its an emulator that isn't connected with retroarch.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Thank you. I'll see if I can navigate it with the keyboard. Yeah, I was specifically referring to the n64 "gles2rice" variant, as it tends to work much better than "next" (also with much better rendering). Unfortunately, the mapping is all messed up on that one and I cannot figure out how to get it mapped.
Do you use any specific display settings? When using lr-Mupen64plus-next emulator for RetroPie on my tv, the display is really pixelated and looks nothing like your display. Display only clears up if I use gles2rice emulator, which controls don't work. Curious if you've done any special configs
Quick question. In games that need the z button and c left combination, how do you play since that combination opens the quick menu. The game we are playing is Donkey Kong 64
Unfortunately that's an issue with mapping N64 in emulation. You can't make it perfect because the N64 controller is so different from the other controllers out there. Everything else is much more straight forward. This is pretty much the best you can do to get into most of the N64 games and have them playing well. You could try customizing the mapping a little bit to try to get around this issue but you will likely end up just causing another issue elsewhere with other games. This is definitely the toughest collection/controller to get working perfectly with RetroPie.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan hmm so it’s for my 7 yr old and if I would re-map the controls in emulation just for the time while he is into this game do you have a suggestion as to how to set it up/what to change? Because I can always remap it again back to the videos suggestion once he’s done all the things he wants in this donkey king game right?
@@vickyenger517 Absolutely could go that route. I'm not super familiar with Donkey Kong 64 myself but I would take note of which controls you use seldom in that game or not at all and swap that x button out with whichever button you don't use much. You'd be swapping it out within retropie though not retroarch (1st part of the mapping process in this video). Maybe swap the X function with another c button you don't use much or one of the shoulder buttons? Again, not familiar with the controls for that game. That was a game I was big on as a kid but my memory isn't good on what buttons do what in that game.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan okay! I am not very techy and I’m trying to figure these things out for him as we go! Thank you for the fast responses! I really appreciate it especially with an anxious boy wanting to shoot the coconut gun 😂 So just to clarify for myself (and I hope I’m using the right lingo here). I need to reconfigure the control “x” to something different besides the c left button in the first configuration process called the emulation? Do I need to change anything (or set it up again) in the second step of the video like in the n64 menu or will that all be saved and ready to go?
My apologies nothing important is said there while scrolling the game menu. More or less just describing what I’m looking for (a game to demo that’s quick to get into). Will keep that in mind for future videos.
Is there a way to change the hot key quick functions? I keep having trouble resetting my games during play sessions. The hot key function to reset is Hotkey + B. Which I guess in this case would be Z + B = Game Reset. Lol thank you for this tutorial though, it’s nice to use all the buttons in the correct spots.
Hey! They'll automatically work if you follow this complete process. You can jump into those games and you should be good to go right off the bat. You could however go into retroarch like you do in the second part of this and configure them differently for those games if you wish to go that route as well.
Been hearing this a lot lately could be something off a recent update. Try to use a different controller to get into retroarch. Then from there you can use the n64 in retroarch once it’s opened.
I've just bought a retro-bit legacy16 2.4GHz wireless controller for my raspberry, like a snes controller with a right and left analog buttons. I thought it would work for my new, snes, game boy, play station. All those. I've configured it for the menu, but I don't know how to map it. This video showed me how to with n64 controller and I know it's in the same menu pulled up in the end with the port binds. I just don't know which ones to select to map the buttons. PLEASE help.
Great video, but for some reason my a and b are reversed after mapping which is no big deal but when I play if I hit the z trigger and the "a" button. The game resets? Any ideas
Sounds like you missed the second part of this configuration process. There’s two parts. We demo in Mario then go to n64 where we need to make additional mapping inputs
Unfortunately this is the best you can do in most cases. It's a weird controller layout and with emulation you have those extra functions assigned automatically. You could alter the mapping for certain games but it would take trial and error to find one that works better.

I appreciate the video. One problem I’m having is at the start. Power on without it plugged into usb. When I plug in and tap and hold A or any button it takes me to the console select screen, not configure game pad screen. Any advise? Or is there a way to get into configuration through the menus? Buttons on the controller work but it clearly needs to be configured to work properly. Any advise is appreciated.
That’s weird. It seems like something is off. Do you have other controllers setup? It sounds like it’s not distinguishing that controller from another one that’s been setup prior. Two ways to solve this. First go to main menu, then configure input and you should be able to map the n64 controller. See if that works. If not then you may need to reset all your controller configs if they are in fact out of whack.
Any time. All you have to do is map the controller and it should work in n64 games. You can customize the mapping within retroarch if you want but should work by default.
Just went and checked that out and its actually the exact same process just looks different because its a different version of retroarch but the process is exactly the same.

Yes this has to do with the fact that the hotkey is bound to the z button ... It will not allow keys bound w hotkey to be held long press.... I'm having the same problem right now
Ok I think I just figured it out... Go back to emulation station and reconfig the controller... This time do NOT find the left shoulder button and instead bind the hotkey to left shoulder and keep the rest the same, go into your emu in game menu and rebind controls afterwards, and you should be good. Do the buttons work in the game without going into that menu? That would just verify whether they are working. So reverse them when you configure and they would be correct. You mean it autoconfigures them back after you manually set them ? Or the actual controller is labeled different than a standard n64 controller?
@@OfficialChaseBrogan I will try reconfiguring them to the x and y buttons and see what happens. You can try to tweak the controls but it will likely just change to another configuration that does that. As for the graphics not much can be done to improve them. They are pretty pixelated on some titles. You can try to smooth them but honestly the changes are extremely minor.
I’ll have to look into that one specifically but did you try both parts of this mapping process? This typically maps all n64 games to what they were on the original console.
Hi, I just recently bought a raspberry pi that includes N64 games and tried playing goldeneye 007 on the PS controllers but it's impossible, do I need this N64 controller for that? Thank you
It's bad in n64 controllers too in all honesty it's due to the way the mapping is on retropie. It's geared towards PlayStation style controllers so when you map a n64 you end up with weird button combinations that mess up the gameplay. Most n64 games you can play fine but goldeneye is one of the few that just never feels right

Instead of using the N64 controller and having to reconfigure it every time you want to play a different Consol game, is there a way to use two separate controllers? First of all thank you for doing this! It definitely helped me to be able to map my N64 controller accurately within retropie. I do have a question though, doing it this way after the second part within retroarch, I noticed that once I save it I can no longer utilize the b button in retroarch. I’ll have to check that out. I haven’t noticed that but I don’t go into Retroarch much in fact I’m not sure I have ever gone back in there with a n64 controller. That’s not my favorite controller so I don’t use it often at all.
In retroarch I cannot get to the same device type. I am using an N64 controller USB but it says device type RetroPad? I tried to scroll over and select a different option for device type but no controller option. This means when I try to set up in retroarch I cant map the c buttons or the z buttons. Any advice?
That’s really strange. Let me ask you think when you load your game in from your regular game collection menu what does it say in the left bottom corner? You typically get a confirmation message as the game detects your game pad so it should say something like “name of your controller” connected. What does yours say? Also which version of retropie are you using?
Hey yes I did. Did you want to know how it should be mapped or whether its compatible? I don't have it myself so I'm not positive on compatibility but as for mapping if you do find it is registering properly with the raspberry pi/retropie then I would look at the video below for the button mapping portion. Don't map the shoulder button as select as you have plenty of additional buttons you can utilize in the center of your controller. Do the buttons the same way though since they're layout is the same. Use your shoulder button as shoulder buttons then use the analog sticks as you would for playstation (as they seem to be the same setup there). At the end assign one of your extra buttons in the center as your hotkey to exit games (you'll use that button along with the start button to exit games). That should do it for you. Again, I don't have this controller myself but if I did that's how I would try mapping it.

This helped tremendously, but when playing, the Z button doesn't hold, it is just momentary. Ever run across this? Thanks
(EDIT: the button itself works fine and works within the emulationstation menu as well as within game, just not in the RetroArch gui)
Additionally, any idea how to setup the controller mapping for other emulators such as the "rice" variant (which often work much better than the default).

I need to reconfigure the control “x” to something different besides the c left button in the first configuration process called the emulation? My apologies nothing important is said there while scrolling the game menu. More or less just describing what I’m looking for (a game to demo that’s quick to get into). Will keep that in mind for future videos.
Is there a way to change the hot key quick functions? I keep having trouble resetting my games during play sessions. The hot key function to reset is Hotkey + B. Which I guess in this case would be Z + B = Game Reset. Lol thank you for this tutorial though, it’s nice to use all the buttons in the correct spots.
That controller configuration screen. Can I also use it to configure the controls for Super NES and Sega Genesis games to work with an N64 gamepad?
Hey! They'll automatically work if you follow this complete process. You can jump into those games and you should be good to go right off the bat. You could however go into retroarch like you do in the second part of this and configure them differently for those games if you wish to go that route as well.

Just to be clear, on the n64 game specific setup, is that going to work for each game or do we need to set up controls for each game individually?

Great video, thanks for your help, but great Caesar's ghost, my man. your voice is super low, so I cranked my volume, then your retropie volume is jacked, almost gave me a heart attack when you started going through your nes games. lol. a little volume normalisation goes a long way! haha.
thanks again for awesome video (minus the almost cardiac arrest part 😁) 👍
Haha! My bad brother. The audio levels are a mess there. That video is from my old setup where the volume levels were a mess. We've got that under control now.
Thanks for the video. Helped get mine going. I never had a N64 growing up, went to XBox. What a weird controller tho.
Yeah N64 seems to be one of the most popular consoles of the 90s. I’m personally not the biggest fan of the game graphics or the controller layout. Feel like you need a 3rd hand to work it! 😂
And then I’m unable to do any more on the list after left thumb.
Thanks so much for the video! I’m going to try to make my hotkey a lesser used button, such as left shoulder. Wish me luck!
Let me know how it works!
Worked for me and helped when needing the z trigger to be on constantly when held.
I set my n64 controller up like this but try to play Castlevania or turok is the worst
It works for the majority of games. You can go in and try to alter within retroarch for those specific titles. They may need to be tweaked.
Can you show us how to set up an Sega Dreamcast controller on Raspberry Pi Retrosystems?
Is there a usn Dreamcast option? Should be same as an Xbox style
@@OfficialChaseBrogan oh I think I see me posting issue. This is like a DM. You're the first person I've ever talked to on TH-cam. It was an amateur mistake☺️.

Thank you, I can't wait to play ocarina of time
Any time! Glad it worked out.
This is great! I have been trying to get this set up for weeks! Also, how did you get a stable emu running? My cuts out after I play a game for a while.
Which pi do you use?
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Pi 4
@@eduardoaviles8241 hmm that's all I'm using on my end. I do have a case with a built in cooling fan too. Do you have a fan? That makes a big difference especially if you're only seeing issues after running for a while. Your system is liking heating up and not cooling properly. When I first started I used one of those metal cases that are advertised as not needing a cooling fan because they self cool....it's a line of bs they don't cool properly.
@@OfficialChaseBrogan Did you need to overclock your Pi?
@@rodolfoaguilar2531 nope never did. Never had any reason to.
I used this set up and Mario 64 does not play rite?
Just wondering if anyone else is having an issue with games where you have to hold the Z trigger during game play, like pokemon snap. My son was trying to play but couldn't take any pictures because of this. Any way to fix this?
Follow his instructions but use left shoulder as the hotkey. Just fought this for a few hours myself. Need that z trigger for shields in Asteroids. Good luck.
@@garthb100 thanks so much, gonna give that a try now
This does not work for me had to use a different method. By using another configured controller to scroll past the a button then I setup all the correct locations without hot fix button, because I will use the other controller for that. At the end I just hit the a button on the configured controller to finish it off. Works great now fully configured not by this method that did not work for me.
Awesome, thanks! Couldn’t find the right answer. This worked like a piece of....pi.
Lmao I see what you did there 🤣
Thank you so much!!... Confirmed working with SWITCH CO.,LTD. Controller (Dinput) usb controller.
Excellent!
@@OfficialChaseBrogan I have been working on this for two days as its for my daughter's birthday tomorrow! Thanks once again.
@@WATTYUK awesome gift! Well done! Glad it worked out.
Wouldn’t let me go to settings for the N64. This is very frustrating…
Do you have another controller or keyboard that you could setup and try using to access retroarch in N64?
@@OfficialChaseBrogan yes, another N64 (from their store too) and two SNES
Man thank you very much! Respect! ✌️
Anytime!!
it works but at the same time if you play any games with lots of combos in them youre gonna reset the game in 2 seconds
wish there was a fix
Echoing all the thanks!
Any time!!
Followed the guide and it works great except for the Z button, it cant be held down (as it it will accept z input for a 3rd of a second then stop) in starfox for example I can double pull it for a barrel roll but cant hold it for a hard left turn
Yeah that’s the issue with emulation sometimes it isn’t 100% perfect
@@OfficialChaseBrogan nothing for it but to keep fiddling with it i spose, thanks for the guide in any case
Same happened to me, map select button as hotkey and you will do the barrell roll on Starfox without problem
Same. You can't hold down the z button cause if you do it goes to hotkey mode and can't use it. Like for games that require to hold it Golden eye with the machine gun.
Thanks for the tutorial. The only annoying part is the volume of your voice vs your game selector lol
😂 my apologies there! This was a early video and I really had no idea what the heck I was doing a t the time.
Start says something different on my screen. It says BUTTON 12. Not BUTTON 9 like for your configuring.
Then I get to a certain point and it won’t let me configure any more buttons. Or skip.
Z and left c won't pull up that menu
Hey did you configure the controls the same way as in the video for the first part?
@@OfficialChaseBrogan yes, I'm not sure whats really going on either. On ocarina of time, it seems the sword is on a C button, the sword is on A and B are swapped for some reason. I can't effectively play this game because I guess I could get to the first song then have to stop playing because the C buttons don't behave properly no matter the setup. I tried using both emulators that show the menu as well, and the mupen next looks good and it stutters so bad. I almost wonder if there is a version of the same game that a raspberry pi can emulate. Like a pi version and not an actual 64 rom. I have two snes wireless controllers and two USB n64 controllers. I wish there was a way to keep my settings for old school games and whenever I plug a n64 controller in, it will be for that and revert back etc
hotkey + c left worked in my case all of a sudden :D
@@bryanna72
Thanks, but this definitely won't work for Mario Kart. You have to hold down Z on a regular basis.
i use it on mario kart and it works. DId you go into the retroarch portion of this for mapping.
Thank You so much! That helped tremendously! ♥️💪👍👍👍👊👊👊
So glad to hear that!!
Dont save config controls 😢
Thank you.
Anytime!
Followed this and couldn't get my controller to work at all.
Where was the issue you experienced?
@@OfficialChaseBrogan I couldn't get the menu to open up with holding down z and x. I went into retroarch and found the mapping but when I tried to fix some of the buttons it didn't help.
I ended up just doing a rough workaround that seems to work
@@nickbutler7735 I would try using another controller to jump intro retroarch. I have heard a few people saying they have experienced that issue but seems that another controller enables you to access the retroarch menus easily.
Mine doesn't look like this at all
How about this one?

the audio mixing on this video is awful...
Correct one of the first videos I did. Much better these days
