In this video, I thought I’d talk about using car ramps and do a review of the Rhino Ramps (11909) 12,000 lb ramps.

I hope you enjoyed the video. I use jack stands about 90 to 95% of the time, but the ramps have come in handy for quickly inspecting a car I was looking to purchase, since they can easily be thrown in the trunk of my car.

can you use 4 ramps and have the entire car lifted?
@@TerryRGraham I've never done it, but I could see this working if the car is not too low. I would wedge the ramps in front of the front and rear wheels then drive up the front and rear ramps simultaneously.
@@DIYApprentice I will probably buy some and try it. I think I will still slide my jack stands under for extra protection just in case.
I ask my sister to buy me some jack stands while she was shopping. When she home she showed me the car ramps she bought. I told her that I needed jack stands, but she said the ramps were cheaper. I replied that I needed them to work on my brakes. She said "so?"

I've used Rhino ramps for 20 years+ and the only thing that I would add, is that I also use jack stands as an extra precaution, when the car is on the ramps, for extra security. Excellent video.
Yes, I sometimes leave my jack in place if I don't have a solid place for jack stands other than the pinch welds.
Same here extra protection is needed for sure! Last time I didnt have extra protection I ended up with 5 kids 🤣 Jack stands gives me the peace of mind when using the rhino 🦏 ramps
@@denniscarey8426 hey Dennis! I’ve seen a Semi run up on Rhino ramps my friend! 🛻 They can hold a Tundra, Ram or whatever you have 🙂
@@denniscarey8426 Dennis have to be honest with you that I have been using mine for over a decade and I still trust it. I always use a backup when climbing under the car such as Jack stands and such. I would recommend completely but I’m not the one climbing under your car. For me they work great, and easy to move around. Of course they are basically hard plastic and maybe buying new ones after so many years would be a great idea. I would buy them again and again . Good luck with your decision
@@denniscarey8426 Per the specs, this 12,000-lb version should support trucks that size, but I personally would go up to the 16,000-lb version.
My local parts store had these. My vehicle is 3600 lbs. so I was uneasy about laying under my car when it was propped on plastic ramps. Watching this video has given me a little more confidence to make the Rhino purchase. I will not be paying the mechanics shop $120 for my OW-20 fully synthetic oil change. Oil+filter+ramps= $88 and only $50 after because I won't be buying new ramps every time. Thank you for the video.
Some have reported having issues with these ramps collapsing, but I've never experienced it. Adding jack stands may ease concerns.
Just wanted to call out how well this video was made. Little details like zooming in on the hole on the front of the ramp to be extra clear what you’re referencing is super helpful. Nice work!

..love my Rhino ramps...quick and easy...and safe...great for routine inspections, coolant drain & refill, and quick and easy engine and transmission oil changes...
Very well done video! I've been an automotive tech for about 35 years but have never used ramps. A lot of cars out there today are very low with no great place to put a jackstand once you've jacked the car up. I just bought the Rhino ramps to do oil changes so your video was perfect. You seemed to be very knowledgeable and very well spoken. Keep up the great work!

A tech for 35 years and you do oil changes without the vehicle being level? If you are the former your wouldn't do the latter!
@@raydavison2972 I don't know anyone who puts their vehicle on 4 stands just to change the oil. The oil pan plug is generally at the back of the oil pan, so being level isn't needed.

Great video! I know you mentioned how you wedge the ramps to the tire and center the dot, but a quick look from the rear side of the car making sure the ramps aren't tilted in or out at all on the wheel-stop side has saved me a couple of times from driving off the side when I thought it was already straight doing a quick checj from the front, but luckily decided to double check before driving up

There amazing for exhaust work! I just backed up (9th attempt) lol and was able to do muffler delete (my Lexus has 4) and replace 02 sensors with so much room... worth the 40$

what a grate video thank you for all the helpful information I have the 1600 model and I never noticed the thing in the middle to line up the tire with I will use this next time I use my ramps. I have the metal type from hft as well but they're getting a bit heavy these days I turned 57 and im still doing this stuff just but just not as strong as I used to be you never stop learning & I always learn something new

lol. There have been some reported failures, but I've personally not had issues with my set of ramps.
@@DIYApprentice how often ypu use it mate i got a workshop so ill probably use it a couple times a day for quick jobs, you think it will break?
Also wanted to ask would you ever consider putting anti slip material on it?
@@kotoposts There have been reports of these ramps breaking, so I can't say how durable they'd be in a shop environment. I have not had any issues, but I only use them maybe once every two or three months. I've seen a couple automotive TH-camrs use them in their shops.

Very thorough. Very clear and well spoken. A little slow for me but don't change anything. Watchers can turn the speed up if they want. You can turn the TH-cam playback setting up to 2.0 (blazing fast) and still understand every word (amazing) but don't go past 1.5 if you actually want to learn something.(and why wouldn't you). Must be using a good microphone. I learned quite a bit just by the background sounds (as he moves the ramps around, flips them over etc)

I appreciate basically every aspect that you went through to make this video.. there was just one major flaw that I feel I have to mention.
You went through the trouble of doing an extensive review, but then after you got the car on the ramps you didn’t show us how much the car was lifted and how much room you’d have to work under it up by getting down under it or at least get a shot of the car from underneath. You just brought it back down almost instantly.
Of course I understand that each car is different and this and that, and you may have had your reasons. But I just feel like it would have made the video incredibly stronger.
Thanks for giving me confidence to use these ramps for the first time, I’ve always just used jacks and jack stands but wanted something quicker and finally broke down and bought them.

Worth a follow up. I bought a pair of the 12K ramps and they work incredibly well with our Fiat.
No problem with ramps sliding on a concrete floor and just enough clearance that no car parts touched as the tires climbed the ramps.
Lift is high enough for me to access and work under the vehicle however a creeper is not feasible.

I recently bought a set of these Rhino ramps and had to return them.
I tried several times to drive my 2014 Miata on them and they would slip out about half way up. My garage floor is smooth finished, and I'm sure this didn't help. No problem with the angle of attack and I line them up with and wedged them under the tires, tried putting them back a bit, nothing seemed to work. I'll probably end up building a set out of wood and put a mat of some kind under them. Great review, thanks.

Good video bud... tell me, is there ample room to change oil on low stance cars without feeling confined? I normally use a floor Jack on both sides with Jack stands but the ramps might be easier. Thanks
These ramps have about a 17-degree angle of incline, so I would do the yardstick test on the car. The lowest stance car I've had on the ramps was a 2000 Toyota Corolla - plenty of space.
@@DIYApprentice I use it for some lowered cars, you can get some wood at the transition to help it clear the bumper but its tight. You may be better off driving up on 2x4's and jacking up from there (just don't forget to set the car bqck on them)

I just used the newer ramp to do a quick oil change during my lunch break. Would say that it held up great but my problem was.... Exactly what you said, the foot of the ramp. Once I put my car on the ramp I noticed that the foot of both ramps swiveled & no longer aligned with the tires. Was curious if I could put maybe a rubber or even yoga mat under each ramp to help it from moving next time. Great video
Yeah, the foot is very disappointing. It would hurt to try something like a yoga mat. I thought about looking for some sort of slip-resistant tape.

I added a couple of hinged plates to my Rhinos to decrease the attack angle to save the front end on my C7 Corvette .Works great

Nice. It's also a good idea to measure the inside edge of the ramp when the tires are centered on there to make it easier in the future. Put the ramp on the tire. quickly measure the distance between the front ends, and go. Writing the measurement on the ramp with a sharpie or something helps.
It's easier to be a little off with the spacing than you think.
I've done that in the past - definitely not a bad idea.

So my brother gave me a set of 6k lb Rhino Ramps. He had used them one time. Things changed for him and no longer had a garage to store stuff in so they are mine now. My floor in my garage is very smooth even glossy shinny. I dont want to rough up this look. My Rhino Ramp would not grip. I put down some industrial grip tape and they still scooted forward when trying to get up the ramp. I used the strap from the Harbor Freight ratcheting tie downs t have to solve the slide issue.
I pushed the strap threw the centering hole just in front of the front edge on the ramps. I tied two knots on top of each other so the knot was large enough not to let the strap pull back through the hole. Then I laid the rest of the strap back away from the front edge of the ramp toward where the rear tire would be so the rear tire could roll over the strap. I also put a few strips of Gorilla Duct Tape to hold the straps down on the garage floor. When I roll up the ramp the fact that the rear tire is on top of the strap keeps the ramps from moving forward so the Ramp wont scoot out.
Keep in mind the straps stretch and the ramp will scoot forward a few inches until the strap is taught. In my case I wanted my car to be positioned where I had set the ramps not a few inches forward of that area. I had to redo this point where the edge of the ramp was to take into account that they would move forward just a little until tension was on the straps.
I hope this idea keeps someone else from the frustration I was having with the ramps scooting out when trying to get my car to drive up on top of them
You may have noticed in the video that I wedge the ramps into place under the tires before driving onto them; I've never had issues with them moving. My floor may not be as slick as yours, though.
man when like 5 years ago we had a set of solid steel ramps from the 70s. they weighed like 40lbs each. but we had to leave a lot of stuff with family when we moved from cali. instill miss those ramps 🤦🏽
These are great to get a jack under a lowered car btw.
was looking for Harborfreight ones, they were out but theni saw the rhinos for the same price at another store. and go those do you see any issues using the Rhino ramps with sienna 5995 lbs?
These ramps are rated for use with a vehicle that heavy. I personally would use the 16,000-lb version of the ramps - just my preference with that kind of weight.

As I mentioned in the video, I tuck the ramps under the front tires before driving up them; my car is front-wheel drive. I thought about looking into some sort of anti-slip tape to see if that might help.

Can you really perform a transmission change on on a ramp? I thought your car needs to be levelled to refill transmission?
I am currently debating between getting a pair of ramps and then a jack lift and jack stands for the rear in order to fully level the car for transmission change. But if ramps alone are suffice, then I can save some money.

Yes, ideally it's best to have the car level to drain the transmission.
Thanks for the reply... a lot of people are saying that there are bad reviews on the rhino ramps on Amazon. I personally are still using my old rhino ramps similar to your old one. What is your opinion of their reviews....I believe the issue is the ramp cracks

Yes, I looked through the Amazon reviews after they were pointed out to me by a viewer of the video. The negative reviews seem to point to legitimate issues with the ramps, but I personally have not had any issues.
Very well thought-out video, thanks. I'm watching because my 11909 rhino ramps often slip on me. I've had them go both forward as I drive up, and once even backward under the car. It's a little scary. I don't wax my garage floor (ha ha), but it's smooth concrete and the oil and fluid stains don't make it any stickier.
Next oil change, which is coming soon, I will try your trick of wedging the ramps right up under the tire before driving. I've done it this way, and now can't recall if it always prevents slipping or not. I've also done it by rolling up slowly and steadily, and that works sometimes, and sometimes slips. If your method doesn't work for me, I'm going to try cheap rubber mats under the ramps, which some people use. . . . And thanks also for the tip about those tire centering marks. Never noticed them before.
As another viewer mentioned, I always put a jack stand on either side as well--either at the jacking point, or under the frame somewhere. You just can't trust the manufacturer's specifications on weight capacity, especially as the plastic ages. Better safe than sorry.
Yes, the rubber foot is terrible. Hope wedging the ramps under the tires works out for you; it seems to work especially well for front-wheel drive cars.

I’ve had this thing happened to me before to where it sucked inward underneath the frame I thought for sure it was over, doesn’t help when you have a forward -wheel-drive car damn near suck them in 😂 that’s why I’m looking at that race ramp or whatever it was called anti-slip, huh I will put it to the test😂

I just bought the Rhinos for a C3 Corvette.. They slid all over the garage floor.. I will try it your way next time.. Put the ramps at the dot where the tires are and then go slow.. Thanks for your info.. Very good video... stay safe...
Yeah, I didn't like that they slide so easily as you probably saw in the video. Hope they work out for you.
Any ramp will easily slide on a flat concrete flor........Cut 2 pieces of thick carpet in a rectangular shape , slightly wider and longer than the ramp...and place them under the ramps and projecting about 6 inches in front. .. When you slowly drive on the ramp it pushes the ramp lip down into the carpet and stops them slipping .
@@mikecrowley3102 I'm not sure how much of the video you watched, but I demonstrated that my old ramps did not slide nearly as much as these ramps. As I showed, I tend to wedge the ramps under the front tires to prevent them from sliding.

Unfortunately the comparison you gave of the 2 sets of ramps with regard to them slipping was of little value because you did not press down on the the small movable friction pad , sited on the front of the ramp. Regardless, , any difference is not really important to Dan , (who my reply was aimed at ), as he has already bought the Rhino ramps .! All these lightweight plastic ramps are liable to skid out of position unless care is taken . My post to him was suggesting a simple solution to reduce the likelihood of this problem happening .

@@mikecrowley3102 I've never had the ramps slide when I tuck them under the tires like I showed. Also, I was applying quite a bit of force with my foot near the front of the ramp, even though the amount of force wasn't measured or apparent on video. Good review, only edit I would do is instead of taking the car up on drive gear, I put it on L or 1st gear. This will allow for a more controlled ascent.

There are some Ramps on Amazon, and they are very similar to your Rhino ramps you are demonstrating in your video. They have the Two round center parts on each ramp the same as your ramps, and they say in the description, the car ramp also has stop auxiliary device, when the car wheels press the brake device, it can help you to stop the car, more safety. Do you know what this stop device on the ramps is, and how it works? It doesn't mean the moulded in chock at the end of the ramp on each ramp. The Brand name for these ramps is NAIMP.
Have ordered there after finding out my vehicle doesn't fit under my old metal ones that I have from a previous vehicle. My new one is much lower. I was skeptical at first being plastic and all. Once I got under I always still have safety Jack's and chocks in place just incase one were to give out. But while underneath and started working I ended up having full trust in these ramps they don't seem to be stressed at all with my vehicle on them. My vehicle does curb weigh about 3200 pounds ( not taking the full weight only the front) no problem.
Glad they're working for you. My heaviest car is 3800 lbs - haven't had any issues.
2x8 board miter cut on one end stacked up one progressively shorter to 8in.then 2x4 for the end stop work great never break..if you have a low profile car make the ramp longer to compensate for that

Personally, I wouldn't alter the ramps, but you're obviously free to do what you want.
Instead of the chocks can I park another car behind? Slightly touching the rear?
I'd rather use something relatively inexpensive to prevent the car from moving than risk damaging two cars. Wedge-shaped blocks of wood might be an alternative.
Let's say I want to drop my muffler because my evap box is right above it. Should I back into these rhino ramps and do the repair?
I've never done it, but I don't see why you couldn't back onto the ramps. I would stuff the ramps under tires like I demonstrated and possibly have someone spot you.
