To be fair the ThinkPad was kind of dead to us anyways because of the lack of upgradeable parts in recent years. Now someone should make a trackpoint keyboard for the Framework laptop, because that thing seems like what the ThinkPad has passed the torch to.
The ThinkPad is just a brand, and IBM was taken away sweet features all these laptops before they even sold the division. Additionally, in 1992 the ThinkPad 300 did not have a track point. The IBM 220 ThinkPad had a roll ball and not a track point. removing the nub isn’t going to take it away from being a ThinkPad, but the seven row keyboard, robust build quality, fast warranty service, and Hardware maintenance manual was part of what made ThinkPads awesome in the past. with that said, I just used the iPad speech to text, and it is god-awful. ..

I don't get it either but nobody buys it if it's not playing spotify (which requires authentication and internet) or google maps (same deal + gps). I've talked to many non-techies and they really really want that and don't get why their car can't be remotly unlocked (if it's not a tesla) and they think this is a must have feature... I just don't get it - and they don't get why this is a bad idea

Yeah, It's better for your wrist, I felt it was slower using it but it was much more natural if you were typing a ton instead of doing an entire motion to the trackpad and using the trackpad for hours is painful for your wrist. I just never liked it's location, i would like it if it was 1 key column to the right so it doesn't mess with my typing as much

I don't care for the TrackPoint nub itself, but it does come with three mouse buttons that are extremely useful to me. They make using the computer so much more efficient.
Anybody who works with just about any industrial CAD or CFD software either has to bring a separate mouse with them or use a Thinkpad. The middle mouse button is essential.

Decent ultrabook IO also and almost fullsize arrow keys...but have a feeling that is going two. Few mashines in the class which have ethernet, 2 usb-A, HDMI and 2 usb-c. I'm not paying the thinkpad premium over a latitude if I still don't get the trackpoint

@dand337 by figuring out what customers do to better place workshops, ads, ev chargers, contact emergency services and more. Of course it should be done in a secure anyways. All vehicles report a ton of data and regulation has not been able to keep up with it.
I remember when the Trackpoint came out, that made those $5000 IBM laptops so cool. Thirty years later I still haven't managed to use one for more than a few mouse movements before racing back to my trackball. Or even the vile trackpad.
Well Thinkpad's trackpoint is actually very useful for some use cases, like for healthcare worker or workers in construction site that are usually require the use of hand gloves most of the time (because trackpad is becoming less responsive if the hands are covered with gloves)
I don't know how others feel but i like they way where laptops are headed after intels lunar lake chips made improvements to the x86 architecture, we won't get any issues with software compatibility and increased battery life and performance. I hope amd and intel push the igpu performance even further to have edge over arm chips or macbooks.
In terms of usable battery life they're still embarrassing compared to Apple's ARM laptops, though the new ARM windows machines are an improvement but still not up with Apple. Still wouldn't entice me to buy Apple products because they've made being actively anti-consumer and anti-repair corporate policy. Windows 11 is so shamelessly invasive in terms of user privacy that if my current computer dies, the replacement will run Linux.
At this point I think anyone who likes VR already has a decent headset, while the rest of us who tried it had think it's too gimmicky just aren't going to pay more than $100 for a new one. My last VR headset is just collecting dust. It's cool the first few times but the wow wears off too quickly and realize that it was a waste of money.

ironically, Dell's tracking bud... has been bugged for over 25 years. it still starts 'walking' to the side. same hardware issue. i replaced hundreds of keyboards at work. we even had boxes of replacements from dell, because it was faster than sending 4 laptops a week to support.......

So there will likely be companies that will drill into the case and add on track points. But they might be in an undesired location. Hopefully they get officially endorsed by IBM so you have your warranty. But the real issue is the scalability for a small company doing this that needs to make large volumes for a big company. Also if they are leased. There's many factors that make this difficult. I just realized the company doing this would need to order thousands of custom built high-end keyboards.
Depend, is the number is just the internal name of the chips it is not that useful but if it is blurred you could guess it is the serial number of the chips and that can be tracked
Lenovo don't really care for the Thinkpad, they've wanted to move away from it looking unique for years and would've got the trackpoint gone years ago if they thought they could get away from it. I don't see much point in getting a thinkpad over their ideapad now? Like they sell them with simliar hardware. Seems like they've essentially making a competitor out of their own product lines.
The trackpoint is pretty good in tight spaces where you fingers are further up than the touch pad. It’s precision can get it exact spot of text or excel cell. Also with middle button you can scroll smoothly without having to keep swiping. Where Lenovo drop the ball is that the trackpad is not anything near what Mac’s can do. Two fingers right click, three fingers can drag items etc. next Lenovo will stop making them lie flat and remove the camera shutter
The freedom from no net neutrality isn't because the ISP can throttle selective data, it's because they would have all the red tape from proving that they don't, making it that much easier for potential competitors to get in the market.
Not looking for a thinkpad going forward then :) My work laptop is actually an older Dell Latitude with a track point, partially handed to me as a joke since I praised the track point on Lenovos :D I think it's fair to say that trackpads are more precise, but I felt trackpoints with the physical button placements were good for keeping my hands in the typing position. Also quite good when working in cramped spaces on public transport. It may have been too niche to generate sales, but it is now even one less thing to justify the price of the business line.
The Thinkpad red dot will probably still be around on the T and P series. The red dot is still widely used. We had our Japanese division come over last year and they were all shocked we didn’t use them

The only reason I sometimes use the trackpoint is because I was FORCED to use it, since the touchpad is the worst I've ever used. I mainly use a mouse, but there are occasions when I have to carry my laptop around, and then the trackpad gives me problems as if there were water drops on it.
Looking forward to the LG gram with Intel Lunar Lake CPUs. They always have good screens. With the Intel i7 1360P CPU, the battery life was solid (5-7 hours). With Intel Lunar Lake, the battery life can get up to 14 hours. Battery size also plays a factor.

If anything, the internet speeds have accelerated to the point that there is no real difference. Net Neutrality is just an irrelevent issue that distracts from the fact that companies that would benefit from the passing of it would be Big Tech companies.
all i REALLY care about is if switch 1 games are compatible with switch 2 games and it has more storage. that's all that matters to me. i downloaded ONE digital title, and it took up 17.3GB of the switch 1's paltry 32GB of storage, and mariokart 8 which i DO own as a physical card still required 14.6GB of space to even play. most of my other games were relatively tiny, never even noticed until now. and I do not have an SD card and cannot go out and buy one like everyone on threads rudely suggested (im a student, i'm not made of money). so if the switch 2 comes out, it BETTER have backwards digital game compatibility, a game card slot, and MINIMUM 128GB of storage. that's all i need.
they really decided to ditch the best method of moving the pointer in exchange for a mid/kinda bad trackpad... really?? apple perfected the trackpack back in 2008, thinkpad still had the upper edge with its trackpoint but not anymore. great now you'll need to carry an external mouse anywhere you go when it wasnt needed before, yes it was good enough to be a mouse replacement, even for gaming

I haven't used the trackpoint in forever mainly because the rubber part broke after abundant use and Lenovo charges extortion prices for replacements. It's sad that Lenovo is going the Apple-ization route like everyone else, oh well, my T470 still does everything I want it to do, and probably will for a long time.
so so dumb that they dont include a privacy shutter in that webcam. with a regular laptop screen you can understand why its not a thing since there is barely enough room for the camera in the first place, but they definitely could have fit something in that compartment at the back
I wish they do this only for the supermarket models, and the professional lineup keeps the privacy shutter. Otherwise I will need to have tape on my display.
For most, the TrackPoint probably doesn't matter. I don't use it myself. But for anyone that cares about the brand? It's abouf the message. Without the TrackPoint, it sends a message that this isn't even pretending to be the ThinkPad we knew anymore. I think a lot of people who are aware of the brand, which is probably a sizeable portion of them, is going to care. I do, and I only use the TrackPoint a handful of times.
I was just thinking about buying a TrackPad for its trackpoint, oh well, now I will steer far clear from the brand, it no longer has unique feature, making the brand worthless in a sea of laptops that are worth more consideration. I wont be buying a single ThinkPad unless they hold on to TrackPoint. Whoever decided to scrap it is doing big damage to their brand.

That small Up & Down arrow keys with big Left & Right keys as shown at 0:27 on the ThinkPad is a sin for me and a thing I hate about most laptop keyboards. Hell it just looks like they slapped on one of the shallow travel crappy feeling keyboards from their IdeaPad and Yoga series laptops. The keyboard layout and TrackPoint are the last few things that retain the identity of ThinkPads since they've decreased replaceable parts over the years as they made them thinner.

The latest Thinkpad P1 was pretty upgradeable. I think that's what I will buy and will just use it for the next decade.
Thinkpad E16 gen2 has upgradable RAM up to 64GB (comes with 1x16gb by default) and 2x nvme SSDs. Which is pretty good for $1000 laptop imo.

I almost exclusively use the trackpoint on my thinkpad, even though the trackpad is great

My work laptop is actually an older Dell Latitude with a track point, partially handed to me as a joke since I praised the track point on Lenovos :D
I think it's fair to say that trackpads are more precise, but I felt trackpoints with the physical button placements were good for keeping my hands in the typing position. Also quite good when working in cramped spaces on public transport.
It may have been too niche to generate sales, but it is now even one less thing to justify the price of the business line.
The Thinkpad red dot will probably still be around on the T and P series. The red dot is still widely used.
We had our Japanese division come over last year and they were all shocked we didn’t use them

Surprised you missed it, but I guess there is a lot of thing to cover but LG a finally announced a 5k2k 21/9 oled monitor and it use the new subpixel layout RGWB that is supposed to increase text clarity.

The only reason I sometimes use the trackpoint is because I was FORCED to use it, since the touchpad is the worst I've ever used. I mainly use a mouse, but there are occasions when I have to carry my laptop around, and then the trackpad gives me problems as if there were water drops on it.

Looking forward to the LG gram with Intel Lunar Lake CPUs. They always have good screens. With the Intel i7 1360P CPU, the battery life was solid (5-7 hours). With Intel Lunar Lake, the battery life can get up to 14 hours. Battery size also plays a factor.

The net nurtality discussion has been happening for almost 20 years, and no website has ever been thorttled.
If anything, the internet speeds have accelerated to the point that there is no real difference. Net Neutrality is just an irrelevent issue that distracts from the fact that companies that would benefit from the passing of it would be Big Tech companies.
The new Thinkpads look pretty much like their regular line of laptops? For example the Yoga Pro line. Love my Lenovo :)
all i REALLY care about is if switch 1 games are compatible with switch 2 games and it has more storage. that's all that matters to me. i downloaded ONE digital title, and it took up 17.3GB of the switch 1's paltry 32GB of storage, and mariokart 8 which i DO own as a physical card still required 14.6GB of space to even play. most of my other games were relatively tiny, never even noticed until now. and I do not have an SD card and cannot go out and buy one like everyone on threads rudely suggested (im a student, i'm not made of money).
so if the switch 2 comes out, it BETTER have backwards digital game compatibility, a game card slot, and MINIMUM 128GB of storage. that's all i need.
they really decided to ditch the best method of moving the pointer in exchange for a mid/kinda bad trackpad... really?? apple perfected the trackpack back in 2008, thinkpad still had the upper edge with its trackpoint but not anymore. great now you'll need to carry an external mouse anywhere you go when it wasnt needed before, yes it was good enough to be a mouse replacement, even for gaming

So they got rid of the erase head pointing device, but they were able to swap the CNTL and FN keys to their proper place. 🤷♂

I mainly use trackpoint.. its more easier to switch from keyboard to track point.. i also use touch screens
I haven't used the trackpoint in forever
mainly because the rubber part broke after abundant use and Lenovo charges extortion prices for replacements.
It's sad that Lenovo is going the Apple-ization route like everyone else, oh well, my T470 still does everything I want it to do, and probably will for a long time.
Can't you get a bag of replacements from ebay for a penny? Maybe not the exact same feeling but it should work.
so so dumb that they dont include a privacy shutter in that webcam. with a regular laptop screen you can understand why its not a thing since there is barely enough room for the camera in the first place, but they definitely could have fit something in that compartment at the back
I wish they do this only for the supermarket models, and the professional lineup keeps the privacy shutter. Otherwise I will need to have tape on my display.
For most, the TrackPoint probably doesn't matter. I don't use it myself. But for anyone that cares about the brand? It's abouf the message. Without the TrackPoint, it sends a message that this isn't even pretending to be the ThinkPad we knew anymore. I think a lot of people who are aware of the brand, which is probably a sizeable portion of them, is going to care. I do, and I only use the TrackPoint a handful of times.
Wolkswagen Data leak? No lol. That's just Germany's take on "Datenschutz". Actually almost every German company has had the same problem recently
I was just thinking about buying a TrackPad for its trackpoint, oh well, now I will steer far clear from the brand, it no longer has unique feature, making the brand worthless in a sea of laptops that are worth more consideration.
I wont be buying a single ThinkPad unless they hold on to TrackPoint. Whoever decided to scrap it is doing big damage to their brand.
I wont buy it without the trackpoint... the trackpoint is clutch when you need to switch from speed to precision... also it looks so cool
Honestly no trackball is a win for me. I absolutely hated that thing.

thinkpads ended as soon as they went to low res 16:9 format displays... a little over 10 years ago.
That small Up & Down arrow keys with big Left & Right keys as shown at 0:27 on the ThinkPad is a sin for me and a thing I hate about most laptop keyboards. Hell it just looks like they slapped on one of the shallow travel crappy feeling keyboards from their IdeaPad and Yoga series laptops.
The keyboard layout and TrackPoint are the last few things that retain the identity of ThinkPads since they've decreased replaceable parts over the years as they made them thinner.
