  • Hello everyone! Thanks for tuning in. I know this is a LONG video, but I could not find a video that goes into detail enough for this type of job. We are replacing the timing chain in this 2014 Chevrolet Sonic. These engines are the same for the Chevy Cruze, and others such as the Vauxhall and Opel line up.

Hi I'm in the UK and I was absolutely dreading doing this job on my Vauxhall Corsa 1.4 turbo however after watching the video carefully I cracked on with it and you made what looked like a terrifying job a lot easier to do so for that I thank you greatly.
I also appreciate the time you've taken to help DIY mechanics like myself and others.
    Best regards Neil.

Thank you for comprehensive detailed information. I am a level 3 Toyota technician with 49 years experience working on many types of vehicles in England UK. So not being very familiar with this particular engine I searched for more information and your video is by far the best and most informative.Good job.

Fantastic video. I'm from the UK with a Vauxhall Corsa with the same engine. I'm not a mechanic and after lots of research and following this video with others I replaced head gasket, all timing components and clean up the valve train at the side of a main road. Works great now.

This is a very great video for a common repair on these engines. Overall this repair is very involved, and pretty time intensive and I’m extremely glad I chose to do it rather than haul it in someplace. This definitely isn’t your typical 1hr brake or hub job…I’m about halfway through mine right now as we speak and ready to start assembling everything back together this week. So far everything has been pretty straight forward and easy going so I don’t foresee any issues cranking her back up!

Working at OPEL in Germany. I can tell you from now on we always pull off the oil pan, reason is the timing cover is not guided by the bolt but by the oilpan. The cover will never be in the right place again causing the oil pump to not fit dead center in the middle of the hole down there. Everything back together and either it makes a horrible siren sound right after the job or a few months after. End of the story is a broken pump and cover, happend a few times now. Replacing those and putting the oil pan last is the solution to that problem. What an awful design they did there.

I agree with James Reed. I did all of this myself but the timing tool kit I got had no instructions with it so, as you said, because there was more than one position to install the pulse generator wheel I wasn't certain I had it correct until I saw your vid. Thanks.

Hands down the best tutorial video I ever seen about this issue with the 1.4 turbo cam chain, I think where I live no one will do this work, they just tell you to drive as long as it last and then they replace the whole engine from some dissembled car.😂

Your last vid on this car was extremely helpful and I can't thank you enough for these videos. Im going to pop the valve cover off now and see if it jumped a tooth. If I end up having to do the timing im debating doing the head gasket too since the car has 120k and from what I've heard its not uncommon for this motor to need a head gasket at some point in its short life. Awesome video! Thanks for your time to shoot that video. GM recommends to remove the oil pan to properly perform that work which is important. But, I noticed you skipped that step. I know why. In order to remove the oil pan you'd need to remove the transfer case as well. It's a lot of work, waste of time. GM could easily do better because it's possible. However, I found a very easy way to remove the oil pan without going through all the unnecessary headaches that GM recommends. There's absolutely no reasons for that. Thanks again!

Thanks for watching! And you are correct, the oil pan removal is not necessary for this repair since it uses a chemical gasket.

Hi... Can you give some details on the easy sump removal system ? we have just taken on a Holden Trax that has filings in the oil filter and I feel dropping the sump is the only way to check for further filings and maybe kerf on the oil pick up strainer. thanks. Tarakai

Thanks for this useful demo. I replaced a faulty timing chain on my Vauxhall Corsa last year and all went perfectly well until i had two fault codes - P0016 and P0017. Oddly the car runs sweet now, no unusual noises and starts strait away every time, but fuel consumption has decreased somewhat although I am aware of that with these fault codes present. I checked everything that has been recommended on numerous websites and chat rooms to remedy this but it now feels like the issue has been caused by the camshaft sensor disks not being aligned correctly when the rebuild was carried out causing the camshaft sensors to send the signal that do not correspond with the crankshaft sensor signal correctly. They're probably only a few degrees out but they are possibly causing the fault. Didn't have the alignment tool at the time so now gonna take the rocker cover off and check to see if they are correct with a new tool i'll be buying soon. Also done some research into VVT controls so will remove the oil control valve and solenoids to check for faults and a good clean out too. Shame the owners manual doesn't include this in the section covering engine strip downs / timing chain renewal. I'll let you know how this goes.

Francine, I have a video on cleaning of the camshaft valves as well. I would imagine the outer part of the camshaft alignment procedure probably needs to be done again. The good news is that is fairly easy to do.

If those phasers aren't aligned properly, they will throw code P0017 (Exhaust Camshaft position not plausible) or P0016 (Intake Camshaft position not plausible).

On the older Z14 engine the crank shaft pulley had to be tightened BEFORE the cams, the chain pulley on the crankshaft could rotate a few degrees if its not tight! It is also worth doing a full 2 rotations of the crank and re check the camshafts are timed again, this will take up any slack that may be in the chain. I have now done 4 of these on the Z14 all with internal water leaks on the gasket, is the A14 just as prone to this failure?
