There is no more "conventional" oil unless you mean not labeled synthetic? Any brand name oil that is API GF-6 or GF-6b has synthetic esters as additives which would make them "semi-synthetic" this would explain at least some of the longevity, the rest is the 5k intervals.
Dropped off my 2014 Equinox at the dealership for check engine light issues, they found that the timing chain was starting to make noise. It’s got 108,000 miles on the odometer has had oil changes with correct Dexos certified oil at 5,000 mile intervals. We had no oil consumption issues until it reached 100,000 miles, now we use about a quart of oil ever thousand miles. Since we plan to keep the car we’re having it repaired.
I was reading about this. Apparently, the newer engines are Direct Injection engines. When the engine is cold, and you run it for only short periods of time (less than 30 minutes) excess fuel is injected into the engine so it can run. That excess fuel does not always fully burn with the less time to combust. It leaves carbon which mixed into the oil. Lots of short trips in cold weather, more carbon. More carbon, the timing chain gets stretched as the distance between the pins on the chain is extended. Over 100,000 miles, that is a lot of stretching. Advice - mix in trips longer than 30 minutes every week. Also, oil you use should be API-SP certified or ILSC GF-6 oil as it can contain the carbon better (not perfectly, but enough to potentially reduce the timing chain stretch). I am hoping doing these things will allow my Buick Envison with a 2.0L Ecotec make it to at least 150,000 miles. However, I appreciate the tip to change the chain at 100,000 miles. I will do that as well.
Since April 2020, with an engine replacement, I've kept my oil changes at ~3K+/-, using diesel oil: SAE 30 CF-2 and/or 15w40 on my 2011 Chevy HHR. Though last Friday, August 29, lost compression, as determined a few days later, though plenty of spark, and fuel pressure. With Gig delivery, hard use, and ~134K miles of travel on an engine that was labeled as ~190K from the wrecking yard. 🤔😬 2024-09-06 1339 PT
I have s 2012 equinox that went 73,000 miles before it jumped. Thank God it did, in the mechanics service bay at he turned the key. Minor damage to the valves was all that it did. Replaced the timing chain, guides and complete head. Running smooth.
hey Alex, do not be afraid of thread inserts, the repair makes the part stronger than a new part, the best ones are from Howmet aerospace ( an Australian company), napa auto parts has them, helicoil is ok too, no big deal to install and nothing to worry about
Alex had some great advice on the ecotech engine, as a semi retired mechanic with lots of experience( I just cant give up my shop) the best advice I can give is do not wait until it stops running, a timing chain replacement is under 1,000, can be done in 2 or 3 days not the end of the world but bent valves could total your car
Ray it really depends on the oil, a car that gets a fast lube job every 7,000 could need a chain at 80K, if it is a neglected engine, like going over miles or cheap oil they can fail at 50K, use good synthetic 5w30 every 5K and it will last 200K, yes I said 5w30, the thin 5w20 is for fuel economy, not good for the engine, gas is cheaper than timing chains@@raypalermo1603
@@raypalermo1603base line is 100,000 miles, which seems to have become a good ballpark figure. For those of us driving 25-30K per year, with too much idle time, may only be 3-4 years. Compared to someone that may drive 12-15K per year, or 6-9 years. 🤔 2024-09-06 1346 PT
I have used Heli-Coil kits onto many vehicle parts including body, engine mounts and internal engine parts as well. I have even used Heli-Coils on the Cadilac 4100 engine which was popular in the 1980's. Since the block was aluminum, I used double 1/2" inserts on the main bearing journals. I never had one of them come back for that problem again. I did work on other issues with the same cars over the following several years. So I can safely say that the Heli-Coils work well providing you install them correctly.
Dorman part 917-954 is a special bolt that threads into the access plug hole for the chain guide bolt. No need to repair the damaged threads on the inside. Saves a ton of time and money.
@ALEXTHECARDOTOR I’m a GM technician newly!!! I started from the bottom and worked my way up but I have a 2005 Chevy classic looks like a Malibu but I think the timing chain maybe my problem I heard rattling one time few days later bam no start and sounds like no compression I have another motor but I wanna be sure if a motor swap is needed
I heli-coiled one for a customer with a waiver due to financial constraints. I used a coil with red loctite and let it cure for a few hours before reassembly. Has gone over 60k since and no issues (yet). Not the right way by any means but this was explained to the customer and agreed was a good solution considering her financial situation at the time.
Oh absolutely, but I always seem to get the knucklehead customers where I try to help them, I explain all the risks and they still get mad if and when it doesn’t work out as if I didn’t explain everything to them 😔
I get it, it's happened to me before. I've come to understand that the customer is not mad at me per se, they are just upset that their car is broken and costs a lot to fix. Always put yourself in their shoes, empathize with them and tell them you will do what you can. They already knew they were taking a chance so there is no need to point it out. Just de-escalate and take care of them. They will get over it.@@AlexTheCarDoctor
I've compared every chain I've removed to the new chain .. never once have I seen a stretched chain.. it's always the front guide broke and or phasers / solenoid problems .. I usually replace everything all at once .. chain , phasers , solenoids , guides , squirter , tensioner .. 🎉🎉
Had a customer come in for an A/C top off today. Needed a VC gasket and I thought I heard some rattle so I sold him a tune up and V/C gasket. (Almost to the 97500mi spark plug interval and I was already gonna be in there) I pulled the V/C and there was about a centimeter and a half of clearance between the chain and the top guide. He'll be in monday for a timing chain, he's very happy I caught the chain before it trashed his engine.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor just got the new chain kits in. The crank sprocket had been chainsawed in the plastic sections of it. Rotate the crank to the good half and chain was tight ish, bad half and it was the rope bridge from fionas castle in shrek 1.
Mr Alex you are GOOD Thank you, I have 2 Sunfire GT Convertibles, 1 Ive always driven, other I just bought but it is making that rattling sound but Running Perfectly, you just taught me ALOT I bet the tensioner is bad and the chain having slack probably slapped into the top guide breaking it off and it is flying around like a Pinball in a Pinball machine, I just hope the tensioner bolt did'nt strip like that engine you showed, Thank you Very Much.
It’s funny. I ran across your video today just out of pure luck. I’m currently replacing a timing chain in a 2013 GMC terrain 2.4. This vehicle came in running horrible with a tremendous amount of codes as you can imagine. Everything from reduce power, cam correlation codes and so on. When I removed the valve cover, I noticed the top chain guide was snapped off. I found it lodge down in the timing chain. That’s what was making so much racket while running. Anyhow, once I realized how loose the chain was. I immediately did a leak down test to make sure none of the valves made contact with the Pistons. I stuck a baroscope in cylinder one at top dead center and found the intake valves were open just barely missing the piston. Clearly it jumped time. The customer got extremely lucky. I would have to say in 35 years. I’ve seen a lot of things. But I can’t say that I’ve seen a valve possibly being one tooth away from catastrophic failure. I wish I knew how to send a photo. I did take a picture of it because it was absolutely amazing. On a sidenote. When you do the timing chains on these, you should go ahead and change the balance shaft crank chain as well being you’re already right there. Just my thoughts, Ron.
My wife has a Holden Malibu 2013(Australian rebadge) with the 2.4L engine that had timing chain failure first at 40000 miles(2018) and now again at 60000 miles(2024). Full service history, regular driving conditions. First one was covered under warranty, this one the dealership is being quite painful about it.
Lots of great information here. I didn't know some timing chain driven cars were so problematic. I wonder why Chevy went with the chain and not a belt on those cars. Thanks for sharing!
I was wondering the same thing! I actually got one in the shop now, with a broken timing chain that I’m going to do a video on soon. Stay tuned! And thanks for watching and interacting in the comments 🤗
Unfortunately belts have pros and cons as well. They're more likely to stretch, teeth round off, or break then a chain is. Generally the problem isn't the chain itself it's usually the guides or the hydraulic tensioners. Low oil or lack of oil changes will cause these issues prematurely as well. I also see and deal with alot of ecotecs, most of the time I fix them unless too much damage has been done.
I think Gm should replace it this for free since it’s a big problem with those cars, I have a GMC Terrain, 90 thousand miles and already have to replace a timing Chain it cost me $1400, that’s sucks …
I have an '05 Chevy Classic with the 2.2L. It has a 150K. I bought it used with 92K. So I guess I will remove the valve cover and inspect the chain. Thanks for posting the video Alex!
Great video what a young man these engines are garbage my friend has equinox with 98,000 miles has p0301 other mechanic said rebuild the motor so he took it to the machine shop and done it still has the same noise ticking at idle and exhaust popping and check engine light on and flashing even after the machine shop did it
Theres a dorman solution plug made specifically for that. Instead of the bolt that plug you take out acts as the bolts. Look up dorman solutions 2.4l timing chain guide plug
I did a repair on a grand am where that bolt walked out, I put it back in and about a year later we did the timing chain assembly and that bolt stayed in. The threads are not damaged, the bolt just vibrated out from factory torq being to low, thats my guess. If I were you I would repair that engine for your customer. Helicoil is a great product, I have used them for years, dont be afraid of thread repair.
I just did a 2.2 Ecotec timing chain tensioner replacement. And I was able to get rid of that looseness by turning the cam gear in the direction of the new timing chains tensioner then activate. Problem solved. Rattle gone (after the first start )
Hello Bondo - read your comment. Sounds interesting. I have a turbo 2.0l ecotec solstice gxp and getting code p0016 for intake timing issue. Car with only 70,000 miles. One min car engine ok next on restart 5 min later engine running poor. Replace solinoids and sensors still with problem. Pulled off cover and chain is drooping between cam sprockets. U think could be just tensioner issue. Looks like on this engine tensioner is on left side. Could this tensioner be issue and could just unbolt current tensioner stud/spring unit and put in new one to take up slack? So then dont need to remove cylinder head and put in new chain?
yea man i did 2 of these engine.. gmc terrain and chevy equanox.. both timing chain guides broke off.. my question is parts of that black plastic guide i guess went down thru into the oil pan.. would it be safe or ok.. to go about it and let it be or should i take oil pan off
hey thanks man, i have 135k on mine. i feel like going out to check it this weekend. thanks for the good info. if the guide is ok can i just replace the tensioner?
I'm wondering if you have come across and 2.4 engines that are stuck and if you have.....what was wrong when you tore them apart? ty and keep up the good work!!!!
Liked your vid and subbed, I appreciate your chill personality. Just bought 2015 equinox 2.4, the seller said it ran when he parked it but rattled. He had a shop put a chain kit at 116k now at 140k , I just looked at his last bill, it said in for no start, i never didn't try to start I pulled off VC and bottom chain cover. The right side black guide bottom broken.Upper most guide gone. Timing marks at the VVT look to be off. All the roller followers seem to be in place. About to go look to see if the bolt has come out. Any advice I would appreciate. Thank you.
Hey Alex thanks for all you work, you helped me save some money on my 2005 magnum with replacing the water pump, now i am working on my daughter 2011 buick regal with the eco tec 2.0 engine. My problem is that her bank 2 camshaft sensor was bad and broke out the block and was pouring oil, i replaced the sensor but now the car only starts when that sensor is disconnected. When connected tge check engine light comes on but has no code, do you know whats causing this and if so how can i fix it? I did some research and have an idea but i want to know from a real expert of what it may b. Thanks for all that u do to help us all.
Hi Alex, thanks for the video. I have a 2007 2.2 with a broken chain. Is it reasonable to purchase a cylinder head from salvage then put on with new chain and guides?
I strongly think that using a tread insert would fix and resolve the problem because once fixed the hole diameter in the aluminum is larger and stronger than when it was made. I kinda feel that all threaded holes in aluminum should have steel inserts from the factory since they would be stronger and reduce the seizing that steel bolts do in aluminum. of course I dont expect the factory to add all that work and expense just to save us trouble. so, are those motors pretty good other than that issue ?
I totally agree! They make a Dorman plug that works great! I’ve been using them and they’ve been working out. Yes, other than that these motors are pretty good!
I'm glad to have run across this video. I just got my car back from the dealership with this exact issue. I have a 2015 Chevy Equinox LT 2.4L. I had it towed back home today because they said it would take them 10 hrs to do the job and it would cost me $2100+ for them to fix it. I'm thinking maybe I should get another car. Or would it be better to fix it?
Dang sorry to hear that. That is a common issue on the Equinoxes. It really depends on the mileage and the condition of the car. If it’s in great condition and reasonably low miles, I say keep it. If you get another car, you may be inheriting new problems with that one as well.
@@mindgrindhustlellc9531 my pleasure I try to get back to everyone,if I was you I will not take my car to the dealership most of the time they are very $ hungry. The first step is to find someone you trust as a mechanic.tip look up reviews that always help. I think the truck is worth it if you find a good mechanic
Just get rid of it and buy a Toyota. These engines are junk. If it was burning excessive amounts of oil prior to the failure, it may need a new engine which is $3000 for a used engine and $4500 for a reman and that’s just the engine alone.
Yup, drill a hole and add a threaded insert. New timing kit and back on the road. That’s how we do. Heck we’ve even spot welded the bolt for good measure.
I have a 2015 Chevy Malibu 2.5 eco code p0016 now to do the timing chain replacement can I just do a partial kit which is just one chain and the tensioners and stuff like that what do I have to do that secondary chain thank you shout out from New Hampshire 603 thanks for all the great knowledge
I'm starting to see some problems with my 2.4L in my Buick Verano at 83K. When oil is low, it has symptoms. Filling the oil to top seems to quiet things down. But I suspect I'm due soon for a timing system replacement job.
The main reason behind the timing failures on these ecotec is because of oil leaks, these eco tec engines can not run low for any reason or will have timing failures not long after oil gets low! Gotta keep up on gaskets on these to prevent timing failures! With the oil low the timing components will get to hott and fail! I have my 2.4 ecotec at 250 ,0000 miles still running strong! With that said had replace main seals timing cover gasket , valve cover gasket , intake manifold gaskets just redid it all! No leaks is a happy ecotec
I’m in the process of replacing my head gasket on my 2.0L Malibu ltz turbo because it had coolant in the oil. Is there a tool to keep it from jumping time and getting it TDC! Before removing the cylinder block. Do you have any videos on this particular job on how to replace the head gaskets and timing chain. My car has 87,600 k so would changing the time while would be beneficial long term. I’m just not sure how to prevent it from jumping
Hey there you have to take it to a Machine shop to have the heads redone that’s the proper way, if you have the skills and the tools you can just simply change out the valves and the valve seals yourself
I have a 2011 Malibu. The timing chain went bad at 85,000 miles. The black guide was in several pieces when I took it out. The top guide was sheered off like the one you showed.
My wife’s 2013 Equinox has that noise coming from the timing chain I believe. It has 120k miles. Is it worth fixing it or getting a new engine? How much would it cost to fix the timing chain? How much estimate of putting a new motor? Let me know please 👍🏼
With 120K, just get the chain replaced. Will be alot cheaper. However, I have heard horror stories about Ecotecs in Equinoxs and the oil consumption rate.
I have a Chevy Malibu it recently stopped on the road today . A few months ago my mechanic said I needed a new timing chain. Do you think my car is finished or do I still got hop fixing it ?
Hey there I can’t really make that call without seeing it for myself. follow my instructions in this video and you should be able to diagnose it yourself if the valves are met you would need another motor/Head job and at that point yes if the car is not sentimental and have very high miles you may wanna depart with it
I just did the timing chain on my 2.2 and it had the old style tensioner and right when I pulled it out the engine it exploded. So there definitely is a reason for the recall but I didn't have any issues with that bolt came out easy enough and went in easy enough
Alex I have a 2015 Chevy Malibu I replace the mass airflow sensor, O2 sensor, the foot pedal the throttlebody. So when I’m driving, it still has the stable track light come on. and the auto stop doesn’t come on no more.
Hi Alex I am in that situation like the last car you show. The car made a big rattle noise before shut down then try to started and did not. Finally I pull the engine out but how do I know if valves are damage ? Or is a fact if time chain is loose then the valves were damaged. I am trying to conclude if need engine swap or new time chain to current but don’t know how to check valves are damaged or not?
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I did that after watching your video and they solid and well seated, no movement or wiggly. Today I removed the time chain cover I found a large black guide broken in 3 pieces, I turn the engine and try to align the marks on the chain and they are off by 3 links forward. Is that enough to damage the valves? or just new guides will be enough? Also a big click when turning the engine from harmonic balancer, after lube from piston 1 turn complete, I am assuming this noise is normal right? Thanks Doc. Daniel C.
@@danielc8037 You may be all right but you will never know until you do a cylinder leak test that’s the proper way to test it out if the valves are leaking in any kind of way without taking anything apart or you can just put the timing chain on aligned everything properly and cross your fingers. it will make noise when turning it because of broken components if no components are broken it’s not normal for it to make any noise
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Alex, Just want to thank you I did the engine swap and went smooth, I put 2000 miles already in the swapped engine, it was worth. I removed the time components from old engine because of the sound that I describe to you and put it in the swapped engine. As I mention is working great just one engine code with the Evap System from the car being sitting 6 month on the driveway, change the evac valve from the canister, I notice stayed always open t all times, and fixed. I got nervous that it was a misfired or something like that. It feels so good recover the car from junkyard that you think it was lost, I am taking better care of the swapped engine. oil change filters, etc. The interiors are great shape, ac, trans, etc. It gave me a lot of confidence on cars. im changing the timng chain and sprockets on a 1.5 ecotech 2016-2023 malibu. do i also need to install a new oil pump chain since it will also ride on the new crankshaft sprocket?
doorman makes a repair kit for that upper guide bolt that basically uses the access plug for that bolt as a way to secure the upper half of the guide so you dont need a cylinder head
My 06 2.2L Saturn ion is having the same problem with going limp while driving and at low idle. It’s at 180,000 miles and I can almost guarantee that it’s never had the timing chain kit replaced, is it worth a shot to try to replace? Would it even help?
I have a 05 cobalt with 113000 miles. I replaced the OEM tensioner on the timing chain but my chain and slack were all like new. I think it has a bad lifter though. It ticks at 2000 RPM ever so slightly. Does it sound like lifters to you? The motor sounds like new. It idles quiet as a mouse after the new tensioner especially. The alternator is new the belt is new. I think it's a lifter tick
My 2014 has the 2.5 and I had to do the same thing but the whole side came off which made it easier to do without taking it out! But my sprockets went bad!
Your explanation of the issues with these motors is DA SH_T !!!!!! I wish I would have seen this video 5000 miles ago. I’m literally going to show this video to my mechanic. Im also going to watch it about 3 or 4 or 5 more times myself also. Have you ever run into the issue of the camshaft gear jumping time? I have replaced the timing chain, and the other chain ( that I can’t think of the name of right now) camshaft sensors, and crankshaft sensor, and both crankshaft position solenoids. My mechanic ( who had never done a timing chain on one of these engines) says that there was some release from gm saying that it’s possible that the gear on the camshaft has become loose and gotten out of position. I also go to search to see if you have any more videos regarding the 2.4L motor and timing chain issues. Feel free to send me a link if you do.
Hey there buddy I’m glad you enjoyed the vid man I have like 3 off those engine in the shop with timing chain problem this week SMH 🤦🏽♂️ I’m going to do a video of me changing one.the only way the cam gear can come loose is if you did not torque it down properly or made a mistake and left it loose, I never seen an issue with them just coming apart by themselves and I see a lot of this engines on the daily. In my opinion he should’ve never been experimenting with your vehicle unless he warned you something can go wrong because I’ve never done this before. Lots of people don’t know these engines are interference engines and if the timing chain is not put on properly or if it jumps timing you will damage internal engine components. Thanks for watching I really appreciate your support
@@AlexTheCarDoctor so when the mechanic says, “ he has a bulletin put out by gm regarding the the chain sprocket for the timing chain that is located on the camshaft moving) is he blowing smoke up my butt because he’s out of his league or does that really happen sometimes?
Are the marks on the sprockets matching up with the chain at the proper positions the main way to tell if the engine has jumped time? If the engine has jumped time does it run great sometimes and then other times won’t start?
@@cliffp2490 most likely. I always say show me what you are looking at.on that engine you have a cam phasers/cam gear they will go out and have movement he may be talking about that but as far as the cam gear bolt that holds it to the camshaft coming loose is not likely unless stated before
People will make up anything to get out of something not saying that about your mechanic, I’m just taking in general I’m pretty sure he is a good mechanic
HELP DOCTOR! I have a 2002 Sunfire 2.2L. NO COMPRESSION ON ALL 4 CYLINDERS! Timing chain has a little slack, but not as much as the last one in this video. Some roller rockers are loose, but not all. Will bad timing cause ZERO compression? Thanks Doc.
Hey there buddy yes bad timing will cause low compression on all cylinders. If you have loose rockers you potentially have engine damage, valve to piston contact has occurred.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Thanks Doc, but will bad timing cause ZERO compression on all 4 cyl's? Also, many of the rocker-rollers just fell off (when touched) where they span the spring and rod. Is this still an indication of "Catostrophic damage"? Appreciate the quick response brother. Last question. Thanks from the Kansas City Shade Tree Mechanics!

Alex, 2011 Malibu LE5 question. The car idles rough in drive and reverse. Smooth in park or neutral. Changed plugs, cleaned throttle body and MAF and is still happening. Have you seen this before.
you should have no problem with a thread insert .I have done many in engines and never had an issue use a high temp thread locker.....its easy ,and works...
I’m an average Joe with a Pontiac Solstice (2.0 ecotech) and currently have it in pieces in the garage. That bolt is a known failure point and Performance Auto Werks sells an upgraded part that holds the guide rail in place and also functions to fill the access hole for the bolt. A single piece that doesn’t allow for this failure. I highly recommend it and am putting that piece into my car once I finish installing my chains again. (Also the water pumps on these engines are absolute trash, replace every one that is stock)
ECOTEC UPGRADED TIMING CHAIN GUIDE BOLT Is this the part from Performance Auto Werks your talking about? Edit- I just seen the kit with the guide as well
Do you see the same problems with the 2.5 ecotech out of the Malibu? Mine sounds like a valve train noise but I haven't removed the valve cover yet yo inspect. Thanks
I have a 2011 buick regal 250,000 miles. At 247,000 miles it needed a timing chain replacement with all hardware. I have a warranty for the work. Now I think I have the same problem with timing. What do you recommend since I have a warranty from the mechanic shop?

Hello, great video! I'm trying to figure out no start issue on my wife's 2008 cobalt 2.2l 135k miles. Check engine light came on over the weekend. Then car would not start a few days later. Made no obvious noises/issues while running. It makes a sort of grinding noise when trying to start. No ticking, no firing of cylinders. Hard to describe noise. New battery last year. I hooked up reader and got code p0016. Cam sensor bank 1. I did not want to throw money and parts at it so have not replaced sensor yet. Any video I've found with that startup sound was broken timing chain/no compression. I removed the valve cover and was surprised to see the chain was intact and appears tight, along with all lifters being intact. No visible damage. (To my untrained eye). Important note: had oil changed within 500-1000 miles and after car wouldn't start, oil was sitting on minimum line on dip stick (I filled it after noticing). No visible oil leaks. Looking for some guidance as to next steps. Would faulty cam sensor cause no start with said noise? Should I go ahead and replace that as first step? I plan on turning engine by hand to see if chain tensioner is operational. From my understanding, the engine should still start with faulty tensioner. Thank you in advance!
@Alex, The Car Doctor thank you for the reply. Of course I wasn't smart enough to take a video of start up sound before tearing it apart...I found a video of same sound. th-cam.com/video/0_Wy_jvYPDY/w-d-xo.html I do not have Instagram but can communicate on messenger if easier?
My '09 saturn aura LE5 ecotec engine with only 55K has developed the chain rattle at start up. I'll drive it till it fails & donate it. Otherwise can't complain much about the car.
This just happened to my equinox three days ago….engine power loss warning on the dash then it just slugged out and cut off and haven’t been able to even start the car since but im not sure if the chain caused bent valves yet because it just happened
My 08 hhr ran great I go out in the morning and the sound it made I thought it was the starter not engaging (just a wind no compression but the belt was turning) would that be timing do you thank?
Lost the upper guide and the lower, vertical guide that you show here.. Chain doesn’t have much slack though. And regarding the thread insert, hey if you’re putting this much work in, may as well do it right and machine shop it
Change your oil regularly and check it regularly. Don't look at oil life as how much oil you have. Biggest killer on these is burning oil, low oil causes the chain to get hung up in spots from lack of lubrication. End result is stretched chain or broken guide, then the inevitable jumping time
Sam S has it!! My wife does 3/4 mile to work on her 12 captiva. Now she has zero compression on all 4 cylinder. Skipped chain from low oil pressure, bent valves..just getting into it at the shop ..93k on motor always rattled on start-up..sucked oil/ as for the class action law suit against GM..the knew it sucked oil/ do your gooogling and see what is going on here. Worst GM engine???????????
Hi I'm about to do a head gasket job on this motor 2.5 eco. I am curious if I could pull the intake manifold with the cylinder head or if I will have to remove the bottom bolt before I can remove it, thanks In advance
@Dev JB I don't have a manual, and I have been trying to find any type of information on the procedure but have had no luck mostly just removal of cam tower guard ( valve cover ) and timing chain replacement videos everything else is about the 2.4l eco tec motor which are different. It does have the 5 bolts on top and one underneath. I was wondering if I could pull it out with the head and remove it after. I'm a big guy and I was told I would have to get under the car to remove bottom bolts which wouldnt be a problem if I could fit lol. I have it jacked up now but barely fit to remove the oil from the oil pan
this problem happened to my truck (2010) equinox just this week truck died at a stop sign was told its timing chain i cranked it over but wont start obviously how can i tell if theres damage to t he engine trying to figure out if its worth putting a chain on it
So I have a 2002 Saturn l200. 2.2 ecotec. My car cranks but doesn't start. I feel it may be the fuel pump but not sure. It just shut off on me one day while driving. I've replaced the crank sensor checked spark plugs so that's all good. If it jumped time would I heat a noise or feel something. My motor doesn't act crazy still really quite but again it hasn't been able to start. I noticed that there isn't a lot of pressure when checking the gas pressure in the front of motor. From what I've sáid do you have an idea?? Thanks
Got 222,000 on my 2.4 in my 09 Pontiac G6. I Change oil every 5k with regular conventional. No issues. Amazing engine
There is no more "conventional" oil unless you mean not labeled synthetic? Any brand name oil that is API GF-6 or GF-6b has synthetic esters as additives which would make them "semi-synthetic" this would explain at least some of the longevity, the rest is the 5k intervals.
My 2010 g6 just got the dreaded timing chain rattle at 243k miles, aside from that it’s been bulletproof
What a lovely young man. taking time out to help others. Need more like him. God bless you Alex. Thank you.
Thanks so much for kind words 🙏🏽
I agree, I'm a mechanic myself, and this dude seems very genuine and knowledgeable.. I'd take advice and work with him anytime
Hi alex do you speak spanish @@AlexTheCarDoctor
Good advice as well buddy that may help a few people whoever comes across this thanks

I have s 2012 equinox that went 73,000 miles before it jumped. Thank God it did, in the mechanics service bay at he turned the key. Minor damage to the valves was all that it did. Replaced the timing chain, guides and complete head. Running smooth.
Wow 70k, I’m glad you are back up and running
hey Alex, do not be afraid of thread inserts, the repair makes the part stronger than a new part, the best ones are from Howmet aerospace ( an Australian company), napa auto parts has them, helicoil is ok too, no big deal to install and nothing to worry about
You are absolutely right, I work at a machine shop, we use inserts all the time for repairs, they are better than the original thread..
Thanks so much for your advice! I’m always open to learn! Definitely gonna use your experience and wisdom. Thanks again 👨🏽🔧
At how many miles should they be changed?.

Thanks so much buddy that will save my customers a ton $

I have 353,000 miles on my 2004 saturn and have absolute zero issues. I have always ran synthetic and change it at 8k-9k miles

Because GM had major issues with the timing belt engines. They failed before the interval for replacement.
I think Gm should replace it this for free since it’s a big problem with those cars, I have a GMC Terrain, 90 thousand miles and already have to replace a timing Chain it cost me $1400, that’s sucks …
@@Maria-hm4gc is that with parts and labor ?

I would recommend that.
So would staying on top of oil changes prevent this problem?

To replace that guide and the support bolt does the timing cover have to come off?

Great video! Thanks! I’m going for new chain and water pump since I’m so deep into it anyway!
Good video thanks for sharing👍🏼
15 equinox 2.4L
Changed the time chain, followed your video to a T, turned it on, let it run for about 30 minutes, drove it 10. Next morning, started it, low power display comes up, tore it down, re done the chain, started it up, ran fine drove it, turned it off, started it again, reduced engine power display again.
Tore it back down again, made sure to double check everything over and over, put it back together, started it, ran fine 30 minutes, turned it off and back on, reduced engine power.
P0016, p0089, p228d, what can I possibly be doing wrong??
Alex, 2011 Malibu LE5 question. The car idles rough in drive and reverse. Smooth in park or neutral. Changed plugs, cleaned throttle body and MAF and is still happening. Have you seen this before.
Hey there buddy you may have bad engine mounts. If there is no check engine light on it’s a high chance it’s the engine mounts
Are there warning signs. Does it rattle a lot or does it rattle a little on cold starts? My 2010 Chevy HHR 2.4L rattles a little on cold starts.
you should have no problem with a thread insert .I have done many in engines and never had an issue use a high temp thread locker.....its easy ,and works...
I have the 2.4 ecotec engine in my Pontiac G6 . It has 157000 miles and runs great . It uses no oil at all.
Great job Alex. Really helped me out!
Thanks buddy, I’m glad my video was Able to help you out man
I’m an average Joe with a Pontiac Solstice (2.0 ecotech) and currently have it in pieces in the garage.
Edit- I just seen the kit with the guide as well
Yeah. PAW has it and I think Cloyes and DDM both sell one too
Yeah. PAW has it and I think Cloyes and DDM both sell one too
Do you see the same problems with the 2.5 ecotech out of the Malibu? Mine sounds like a valve train noise but I haven't removed the valve cover yet yo inspect. Thanks
I have a 2011 buick regal 250,000 miles. At 247,000 miles it needed a timing chain replacement with all hardware. I have a warranty for the work. Now I think I have the same problem with timing. What do you recommend since I have a warranty from the mechanic shop?
Hey there tell them to show you the timing kit that’s being installed, they may be using cheap parts
@@AlexTheCarDoctor ok great I will. The code was p0016 p0017. I have the eco tech engine I wonder if the checked the intake cam shaft actuator?
@@lakeithwashum6497 with those many miles they should have change the camshaft gear/phaser also. those are definitely out of time codes caused by either the bad cam phaser or faulty timing components
@@AlexTheCarDoctor thanks so much. What city do you live in ? I'm in Tennessee.
@@lakeithwashum6497 I’m in Atlanta George near the airport. I visit Tennessee often to take my kids to camp up there where in Tennessee are you,the camp is near The Ocoee river
Are the 2.2 ecotecs better then the 2.4 because I have a 2009 Chevy cobalt with the 2.2 vvt ecotec engine?
What about using blue or orange loctite on that guide bolt? Or is the problem, the length of theeads?
Hey there buddy can you send me a video of it on Instagram I want to hear it for my self
@Alex, The Car Doctor thank you for the reply. Of course I wasn't smart enough to take a video of start up sound before tearing it apart...I found a video of same sound. th-cam.com/video/0_Wy_jvYPDY/w-d-xo.html
I do not have Instagram but can communicate on messenger if easier?
@@michaelthomas5323 that works Facebook message. That’s the sound of jump timing
@Alex, The Car Doctor thanks for confirming my suspicions, Alex! I'll reach out on messenger. Much appreciated!!
@@michaelthomas5323 my pleasure
My '09 saturn aura LE5 ecotec engine with only 55K has developed the chain rattle at start up. I'll drive it till it fails & donate it. Otherwise can't complain much about the car.
Wow that’s low mileage.
I don’t think I pretty much know unfortunately you may have jump time and bent valves if it sounds like a sewing machine when turning over
@@AlexTheCarDoctor Not a Sewing Machine just a motor, one steady sound. But thank you anyway
@@richardvandall3336 can you send me a video of it starting on Instagram I can better determine what’s going on
My 2011 buick regal is doing the same thing. How do I go about fixing it
If timing chain needs to be replaced do you need to lift the engine or body?
How is the replacement interval for a timing chain barely longer than on a timing belt? Good ole GM
I see a lot of bad ones but I also see good ones but mostly bad
They sell a new bolt that doesn"t used the thread in the engine,is one piece threaded from outside of the engine.
I know, Dorman makes it! And I love it. I’ll make an updated video if I ever get the chance.
keep up the good work, Lou
Thanks Lou!
Quick question do all the 2.4 ecotec engine have the same engine block???
My cam gear marks don't line up when on TDC. How do I remedy that without damaging anything. I'm doing a complete timing chain replacement
How long does it take to change the sprocket s and timing chain kit on a eco malibu 2.4
It takes me about 2hr if I take my time
this problem happened to my truck (2010) equinox just this week truck died at a stop sign was told its timing chain i cranked it over but wont start obviously how can i tell if theres damage to t he engine trying to figure out if its worth putting a chain on it
So I have a 2002 Saturn l200. Thanks
can you replace tensioner from the outside of equinox without going into engine
