      When I started ultimate I agreed with that, but the better I got at the game, learning combos and neutral, the more I enjoyed playing Sheik, to the point where I switch from my main to play her. I can see what you mean, but the satisfaction of playing sheik is mostly her combos, since a drag down tipper up smash is incredibly rewarding to land. Though I think bouncing fish is incredible to land, its hitboxe doesn't match the particule effect so I can see why people don't like it. But if you like characters like fox or pika you should be able to like sheik, since they aren't exactly big hitters either.

      I guess what I was trying to say was that I just prefer other characters of this archetype. I find combos really cool but not all hits will combo so I prefer characters who have enjoyable single moves as well as combos and sheik pretty much just has combos. Really good combos, mind you, but single hits feel kinda week at best. Just my opinion of course.

      As a sheik main, I thought this for a while when I wasn't playing her, since the first time I played her I had idea what I was doing (in general) and she felt really unrewarding. But after some years where I really started improving and finally manage to put my main (bayo) in elite smash, I decided to retry sheik. First of all, she has phat moves. They are just hard to land. Up b is good for reads, tipper up smash is incredibly satisfying and her other two smash attacks are far from weak. But the real fat move is bouncing fish. It's hard to land when you don't know what you are doing since the hitboxe doesn't match the animation but after a while it just become the most consistent phat move to land. What I also like about her is that unlike some other difficult characters, sheik IS smash. You don't have to learn crazy item techs, desinc, cancels, she just test you basic knowledge of the game. So you don't have to watch 30 minutes video on how to desync and instead play the game normally and try to make a feel for the character. She reminds me of what people say about melee fox, playing sheik is like going to the gym, you are always improving and finding new stuff and there is always something different to do.

    Sheik is an example of a well balanced lightweight character - fast movement, fast frame data, combo focused, low damage output, difficult to secure kills. This is the design that all lightweights should have. But the amount of light characters in this game that hit like a truck is ridiculous, and that's what makes Sheik a bit redundant.

    As a Sheik player, all of these points make sense. Playing the perfect Sheik is realistically extremely draining and close to impossible. Instead, you can play her based around fundamentals to take advantage of her frame data and slowly incorporate Sheik specific tech (usually her kill setups for efficiency). As for a reason to play her, it's mainly to enjoy the freedom and flashiness of her combo strings. But also when you do pull off those highs of kill setups and dominating neutral, it's a rush.

    I'm a Lucina main and I enjoy playing Shiek, although it feels so unrewarding to do such a long combo where you rack up damage just for your opponent to land like 4 moves and then boom % is tied but wait there's more, they're actually in advantage just because you're so light and have very little kill power. If Shiek had solid moves to kill at around 100% I personally would enjoy playing her a lot more.

  • @ekh.123
    @ekh.123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    Yeah, I think you've hit every nail on the head here. I've grown more attached to fast, rushdown characters lately, but Sheik has been the one character I've struggled to get a grip on. The sheer amount of effort it takes to play Sheik well is utterly draining, knowing that I can't afford many mistakes at all. Plus, there are other characters who take noticeably less effort to play well, but still revolve around being a rushdown character, like Fox and Joker, and Joker is considered Top 5 in the game at the moment. There was also the time right after release when Sheik was near-unanimously considered mid or even low tier, but got significant buffs in the updates to later become potentially top tier.
    I think Sheik is fine where she is. The reward she gives off can potentially produce Best Player in the World results, yet she can easily crumble from careless mistakes. However, a high-effort, high-reward character is always incredibly fun to watch and play as, since all the hard work you put towards the character is finally paying off. That is, if you can handle dying earlier than Kirby would.

    As a Sheik main, I honestly think the only thing Sheik needs is increased weight. I think Sheik being significantly lighter than Zelda while ironically being the same person is unfair. Even if there’s an argument to be made justifying Sheik being lighter than Zelda, in my opinion Sheik doesn’t deserve to be lighter than Kirby. Everything else about Sheik truly gives an honest reflection of the players themselves, so you just need to get good if you want to close out stocks or get combos on opponents

    The thing I think is missing from the video is sheer focus on high percent to get a kill, to me the 3 biggest advantages of playing Sheik is:
    1) When done right, you can easily take out a stock at ~100% if you either take them off stage or time a smash attack, it doesn't have to be high percent if done right
    2) The other big component is mind games and psychological advantage. When you get combo'd many times and it's hard to avoid Sheik's attacks - it does tilt you a bit and it makes it harder to play and predict the next move, and I think that on it's own is a viable strategy
    3) If you play more re-actively and less aggressive - it's very rewarding, because while the opponent recovers from the attack, you have the time to approach and punish them
    I started playing Sheik as main for a few weeks now, and I really love playing with her, she's tons of fun. She does require high concentration and flow, but when it works it feels very artful, watching pros play her is really addicting to me

    Sheik is the type of character that's only fun when you're winning because she's frustrating as Hell to lose with. Also, surprised to hear no mention of her weird hitbox placement and her weakness against shielding opponents at high percent. On the topic of buffing her damage, that could feasible without breaking her combos because damage and knockback values exist independently of each other even though they are related, but then you run into the issue of her aerials becoming plus on shield

      @@yuhhh2851 Ah yeah, I just grab and punish landing options, or push stage control. It’s definitely a minor weakness though, not a trump card. I think you have to consider the stance of the opponent though, even if you decide to turtle, you don’t gain much. A forward throw at center stage means immediately you have to play in disadvantage, and if you escape safely you lose more stage control. Assuming you’re reasonably close to ledge forward or back throw can mean a ledge trap or edgeguard which Sheik is great at. I’d say you’re probably best to turtle on FD, if you turtle on platform stages throws can lead to tech chasing scenarios for Sheik, even at un-ideal percentages for combo’ing and kill confirms, I win a lot of scenarios platform tech chasing at high percents because of throws.

      Your opponent is Samus. She is at 150% and she's turtling you. How do you kill her?
      You say all this stuff about pushing advantage, but sheik's throws put you at probably the safest diadvantage position against her humanly imagineable. Unless you jump in against a back throw, she has to commit really hard just to find a hit that will kill you. Meanwhile characters like Roy have throws that set up tech chase situations or send at aggresive angles where you can reliably edgeguard them. And for other characters that can have trouble killing, like Sonic and Paisy, they have percents where basically everything will kill you, and just playing a safe advantage state will eventually get you there. Sheik is nothing like that.

    Also, for Sheik, I think she turned out to be quite a bit better than I initially thought but I still think she's too unforgiving to be considered top tier. And I personally am still more negative on her than most, I struggle even considering her high tier because of how prone she is to getting blown up and how she can't just blow people up in return. If she weighed just a bit more, my opinion of her would be so much higher. I think that would've been the safest way to make her still very strong but not mess up her playstyle. As is, though, she ended up in a decent spot, and I'll never take it easy when I face one.

    My man you handled your analysis of my best girl with great care and for that I have to give you respect. I'm legit a little choked up because I've been unable to put into clear and concise words (or thoughts for that matter) for, well.. multiple decades, why I've always loved playing Sheik, as well as why I recently haven't loved playing Smash for the last few years and why I've been so mad at my favorite mysterious ninja.
    Granted I'm a more casual player, but for a very long time Smash has been in my top 3 franchises ever. My main was always Sheik, and within my local playgroup of twenty kids or so. I've always loved playing with both friends and family, but spent a lot of time pulling punches or playing my off characters or the same character of someone struggling to find their groove. Now I'm in my thirties though, and for the last several years I've been finding nothing but frustration in something I used to take such joy in.
    My reactions are terrible, and my ability to convince people to play Melee or Project M these days is almost nil so I'm not playing in the gravity that I'm used to with different movesets than I remember. I still loved playing with my nieces and nephews, but constantly get dominated as Sheik. It's not that they screwed her in the design, it's that I'm old, raggedy and held to together with mostly spit, bailing wire and good luck these days XD
    I'll rely on Ness and Ganon when I'm nostalgic, but I think I need to learn a new main, or else put in quite a lot of work on finding a way to compromise my playstyle with Her in a way that I can compensate for my bad reactions in casual settings. Thank you so much for this video. You've given me back my love of the game, and simultaneous given me a ready-made response for why I find Sheik such a joy to pilot when I'm on form and before the rum.

    Sheik could definitely benefit (in a balanced way) from at least one 0 IQ kill confirm. If you look at a lot of the roster, Kirby and Pyra have down tilt to up smash, Inkling, DK, and many others have the ability to bury their opponents before hitting them hard, the list goes on. But Sheik? Her easiest kill confirm combo is arial attack into down smash, and it's actually kinda difficult to land since it only works if you hit your opponent offstage with the arial attack.

    The whole “Sheik” can’t kill thing is just that she plays so differently. But the focus on percent always confused me. Yes, she doesn’t do much damage, but it compliments her toolkit, she has extremely precise kill confirms, so you can trade out finishing combos for dropping them on purpose to catch escape options, read and react, or edge guard, ledgetrap, etc. to convert into kills. So while she may take a while to kill at times, the same can be said for every character.

    To use Fire Emblem logic (the good ones anyway since the series was effectively dead/transformed after New Mystery of the Emblem), Myrmidons are the fastest fighters on the map, yet dish out damage so low that they ideally cannot scratch Knights (Tanks) unless they have an Armorslayer. They have high Avoid and low HP/Armor/Resistance, so you have to be mindful of where to position them to ensure they don't have too many opportunities to get hit.

  • @nightpups5835
    @nightpups5835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love playing sheik, but a big part of playing sheik well if you aren't a god is taking spacing breaks. This being time you move out of danger from quick attacks to recover your mental focus, than maneuvering in a neutral to start up a hit sequence again. Most other players/viewers don't like seeing so much down time so it's frowned or even punished to play in a way that can increase performance with a very difficult to control character.

  • @artimist0315
    @artimist0315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    The is a big missconception on sheik that you need to win neutral 20 times to close a stock. The thing you don't realise is that while sheik does need to land more moves to do the same damage, her moves combo into each other or advantage state, and while one single strick doesn't do much, all the hit she can land for just one neutral win compensates her low damage per hit. So the actual difficult thing with sheik is not winning neutral over and over, but knowing how to make you advantage state last as long as possible, which if you ask me, is way easier as sheik.

    • @shadestrider1033
      @shadestrider1033 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But then why wouldn't you use Fox, who can win Neutral as easily and get the same amount of reward without nearly as much effort? Sheik is comparably more draining to play as.
      Characters like Falco and Kazuya gain a lot of reward out of a neutral win, though they sacrifice a lot of mobility for their ridiculous punish games. Those characters reward mastering long strings far more than Sheik, have stronger and simpler kill options, and again, are less draining to play as.
      The main problem is that Sheik is a middle ground between a combo character and a neutral one, but both archetypes on their own are less draining to play as because they yield more reward for less. Sheik needs the nerfed damage output to be balanced, but this also makes her draining to play as.

    • @maxbernhart5822
      @maxbernhart5822 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d argue that’s the harder part. That’s why void is so insane with sheik simply because he has an insane ability to extend his advantage state turning around his combos and going back and forth. That’s really not easy to do though which is where a lot of sheik players struggle. It’s easier to win neutral with sheik over and over than to truly make the most of her advantage state. That’s where the difference is between a decent sheik player and a great one

    • @artimist0315
      @artimist0315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maxbernhart5822 To extend it to the same point as Void does is clearly extremely hard, but there are plenty of relatively easy and practical combos you can do with sheik that does enough damage to be on equal footing with other characters. Of course if you compare it to palutena's or falco combos, they are less rewarding but I don't find sheik more rewarding combo much simpler than Pika stuffs for exemple.

    • @artimist0315
      @artimist0315 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@shadestrider1033 Fox's game feel is much different, and honestly I (and I think it is the case for plenty of players) are not suited to play with fox extreme stats. Sheik have much simpler movement in comparison, and feel more like a more mobile standard character than an "extreme character" like fox. And playing sheik in neutral isn't particularly draining to play if you are used to the engine of the game (AKA if you don't play heavyweights or character with stupidly complexe and specific movement options). Again I feel like people think the need to play void level sheik to enjoy the character, which is a missconception. Technically yes, you will enjoy the game more with a proto level lucina, a marss level zss or a zackrai level wolf, that doesn't make these characters unfun to play at low level.

    • @mehgamer467
      @mehgamer467 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@artimist0315 sadly to be on equal footing as other characters is still more work. Sure you can just do forward throw to bouncing fish at early %, but where other characters have mindless combos that don't have a lot branching paths like fox in their archetype, sheik has a lot more and it varies wildly across the cast. You are undersellimg how much harder her combos are compared to the rest of the cast. Her neutral isn't hard, but maximizing and optimizing this character is far harder than most. You have to do an extra step more for most things with her. Parry punishes, reads (her smash attacks are weak so you have innovate), and etc. Pikas neutral is FAR more straight forward and pika has loops which considerably makes combos more straight forward because loops usually involve doing the same few moves or some repetition. Sheik is more open ended in that regard.
      I agree that her advantage is the hardest aspect of the character, but this is a character that you absolutely need to know what you are doing to even compete at most levels (not just high level) and are held back a considerable amount more than most.

      @N12015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lucario seems a worth consideration. Even when he was good he was unpopular, and now he isn't even good to begin with. Why isn't he good? Because he has the wrong kind of strenghts for the game. His OoS is awful when before shieldgrab was a good option, his autocancels don't matter in a world without landing lag, his aura is weaker, a faster moving cast means his camping style doesn't work and he's worse at killing while the rest is better.

      @artimist0315 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really agree with sheik needing a lot of effort. At the end of the game, you are still playing smash like you would with any other characters, it's not liek with ice climbers or rosa luma where you need to learn weird desync or with peach where you need to get use to float and turnips. Of course she has some combos, every characters have some, but at a lower level they aren't as necessary as people say. I just think that to enjoy sheik, you need a good understanding of the basic mecanics of the game.

    • @mehgamer467
      @mehgamer467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@artimist0315 you would be in the absolute minority in that opinion. Especially considering those characters have a MUCH higher play rate at all levels and you can play all the characters you listed casually and still do well off. It's just when you get to higher levels where it's harder.
      Sheik is hard even at lower levels of play because just doing basic things with her isn't as rewarding. Ice climbers do a shit tone of damage without desyncs and often can't desync qgainst zoners. Peach has float, but you can do more than well enough with her and Rosa just playing the game until higher level. Playing basic sheik gets you absolutely no where. You have to somewhat optimize.

    The main thing keeping Sheik and her mobility and rapid attacks from the top tier in Melee (on par with the space animals, Marth, and Captain Falcon) is that you need to dedicate a few seconds to switching from Zelda at the start of the match. Probably not the most agreeable take, but in my opinion Bayonetta and Sheik were nerfed in ways that didn't just make them "worse" but also ended up making them less fun to play. Ultimately fun is the goal of competitive games for me, so the treatment of characters in this sort of way is what makes them a hard pass for me. A slightly toned-down smash 4 Sheik would have still been really good without the high execution barrier, but more importantly would have been more fun to pick up and play/learn. I tried Sheik early on but the Ls you take are much more discouraging than characters that are "easier" or just generally more "well-rounded"

  • @tardissins7512
    @tardissins7512 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing people forget when suggesting that increases to damage would break her flow is that damage and knockback (bkb and kbg), while related, are still independently adjustable. If you wanted to give more damage but keep knockback curves basically the same, you could do some experimentation with adjusting bkb and kbg with increased damage (try to produce a similar knockback curve to the existing one in desmos for example, holding all variables constant aside from those two) and fine tune it to allow for that to work. In addition, you can adjust moves specifically meant to launch to have higher knockback values to allow for somewhat earlier kills, mitigating the opponent survival issue. Essentially, if you wanted to patch Sheik to be more forgiving in terms of human ability, it would be possible without affecting her playstyle that much, so long as you’re careful with adjustment and counter-adjustment.
