    "Cyclone". In the 70's I wanted something I didn't need, polished intake on my Pan. Don "Gramps" Smith put me wise to the rough intake surface that mixes air and fuel more efficiently.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And I polished (mirrored) the intake ports on a flathead Merc V8. After that, idling was impossible. Live and learn. Maybe we can keep the younger guys from experiencing the stuff we did wrong.

    If you had suspenders and a belt on you would be a dead ringer for my stepfather. He left me a 82 FLH.This bike has been to Sturgis over 20 times. I used this bike to pass my ND road test. The instructor kind of chuckled and wished me good luck. I was the only one who brought a big bike. Passed with no deductions. The bike has 80,000 miles and I ride a few times a week. I really enjoy the shovelhead videos and look forward to keeping my bike on the road for as long as possible. Thanks Mike keep up the great work.

    Interesting! I've never seen a "textured" intake. Have seen dimpling though (looks like a golf ball); what a trip. Those engine gurus are total freaks! What a cool group of dudes.

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes they are. It's textured to match the intake ports. That way, it is matched in size and gives a consistent flow all the way through the intake tract.

    Thank you Mike for another interesting/informative video. When Victory motorcycles were being introduced to the market I worked as a CNC machinist on the heads. It took three Mazaks doing different operations on the castings. The valve seats and guides were cooled in liquid nitrogen. The castings themselves were heated in ovens. The seats and guides were then pressed into place before the being machined. The heads were oil cooled and air cooled. Interesting design and very close tolerances. Total tolerance for the guides was 0.0003. I have one of the early heads that was scrap. Dumpster Diving. Lol

    Love the polish work on the heads, lot of people think that the intake side needs a high polish, but there wrong, as you said, you need the texture on the intake side for good fuel suspension and atomation and the exhaust high polish to get that exhaust gases out freely and unrestricted

    Very nice. I don't think my current block could take a whole lot more building up. Nor could my little softail frame handle a bigger motor, but it would be fun to take on a project like that. My bike "Donna Sue" is past due for a teardown and painting, sadly due to Oregon rust gremlins. Thanks to your block painting advice from this series one day I'll be able to get her cleaned up. 7700 miles and she's a 2001 looks the part of 18 years old but runs like a brand new bike. She should look the part again.
    Man oh man I love bikes.

    Mike I have an interesting one for you. I have a 1998 electra glide ultra classic. 33,000 miles. As far as I or anyone else can tell, all engine components are original. I was getting a top end noise ( I had asked you a few questions here on your videos regarding this ). I ended up replacing the lifters and pushrods, andrews ez install pushrods. Still had the same noise. After much going back and forth, I pulled the rocker boxes. When I opened the front rocker box, it was immediately apparent the intake valve retainer was hitting the rocker box and the rocker arm was hitting the retainer before touching the valve stem. I ended up measuring the height of the intake valve compared to the back cylinder. It was many thousandths taller. Hummmm ? Pulled the heads and cylinders. Pulled the front cylinder intake valve. The keepers for that valve were mushroomed and full of fractures. With the keeper being mushroomed, it allowed the retainer to slide up the valve stem. Causing the retainer to contact the bottom of the rocker arm. With the rocker arm not pushing straight down on the valve, it wash pushing the valve sideways and causing it to contact the rocker box.
    I took all my parts to my local full service bike shop, Heads 1st performance in Westville Indiana. When he pulled the rest of the valves, the keepers for all the valves were full of fractures. I have not talked to anyone yet that has ever seen or heard of this happening. Have you ever dealt with this ?

    • @pacificmike9501
      @pacificmike9501  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Today, things are a little different than they used to be. Manufacturers give out lots of information. Way back when, everything was an experiment. I don't know that I've seen this one exactly, but it sounds like someone installed a cam that was not intended to drop into a stock motor. Consequently, without all of the clearance issues being addressed, things collided.

But overall she is absolutly beautiful and i love her. Could you do a video on how to adjust the ignition. Or maybe u know this problem and can tell me? And excuse any grammar or spelling mistakes. • @pacificmike9501

      Are you sure it is the ignition. Step one: remove sparkplugs. Step two: Compare sparkplugs. Step three: If one is dark and one is light, that is, they don't match, you have a manifold vacuum leak. Check that first.

    Hey Mike your my favorite channel. Thanks for your great work. I have the 2001 Duce and the starter was making that noise! I changed the parts in it but now it makes noise while driving does get quit as the bike warms. I have chosen just to buy a new chrome starter hopefully fixing this noise. I love my bike have another in Greece 2007 Dyna Wide Glide.

      You're sure it's a starter noise? Maybe it's a compensator or even the primary chain. Have you adjusted it lately? Are you sure the compensator nut is tight?

      @@pacificmike9501 Thanks Mike I tried to locate it , I found it comes right were the small nut is to remove the starter inside the primary. I did check the other parts they were fine only 12, km on the bike.

    Those pistons look awsome.! I didn't have the $$$ so I used JE flats on my hemi shaped chambers.
    I know im loosing performance but I plan on dual plugs since I want to stay at about 10-1 comp.

      @@pacificmike9501 I've decided or been advised that the dual plugs don't really help for my Frankenstein combo. Later on im just going to get S&S slugs to match the chamber. Might as well get all the available performance.

      The tapers in the flywheels are moved out from the stock location. Today, we do this by using stroker flywheels. We're using Truett and Osborn's I installed years ago into this motor.

Maybe this one would pull better in the mountains. That one was great, but I never rode fast enough for it to kick in. I love it.
