  • This is detailed video of painting over the chrome grill surround on a 2008 Toyota Tundra. We run into some trouble with cheap clear coat, that creates a bunch of orange peel, and we show you how to fix it using 2000 grit sand paper and higher quality dupli-color clear coat.

      Much agreed. I've heard that since it is a different material (steel) it would require much more sanding. But I will definitely be doing that also. If you end up doing it, you should definitely post a video of that as well!

    Awesome video. I have been searching hi and low for a grill surround for my new '16 CM Tundra that should be arriving in March. The truck is white and I ordered the black billet grill with LED daytime running lights. I want the hood bulge and the grill surround to be black as well instead of chrome so it will have a very storm trooper look to it. This will be the route I take to get what I want.

    Nice job. Showing the mess-up actually helps because most of my DIY paint jobs were fails for one reason or another, but mostly inexperience. In retrospect I suppose you would have sanded with 2000 grit prior to the first clear coat to avoid the orange peel effect, right? I suppose doing this on the steel bumper would not look right, but did you consider that?

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching and posting your feedback. The best thing I could have done to avoid the orange peel would have been to test the can of clear before I applied it to the part. I just had some bad luck with that can. The replacement can went on like glass and stayed that way. A small test would have saved a bunch of time. I ended covering the chrome bumpers with black plasti dip, I am really happy with the way they turned out. I debated about going with a coat of bedliner but that would have required a lot more prep work and I am not sure I would have liked it as much. Plasti dip is easy to undo, which is also nice.

    • @AutoDIY

    was the base coat a glass finish before the clear? Im painting mine and the base is alittle rough, wouldn't say orange peel but not smooth ...trying to see if I need to wet sand base before clear to get rid of it and or with the clear take care of it

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Smooth is the goal, very fine rough on the color coat is okay and the clear should smooth it out. If it is bumpy like orange peel I would wet sand, and re-coat with color before applying clear. Best of luck

    Solid job sir, bummer about all the orange peel tho. Any educated guesses on how to avoid that issue or possibly what caused it? Also after wet sanding the video quickly cut to the finished piece. Did you re clear it with a different clear or just throw on a fresh coat? Thanks for all the feedback this far! Very sharp look that I intend to do as well.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Andrew Beggin The orange peel was a huge bummer. You are correct I did end up putting a coat of dupli-color clear over it after wet sanding. I believe I had a bad can of clear that caused the orange peel, it just was not spraying well at all. The dupli-color clear on the other hand went on like a dream. The trick is to put the clear on heavy, long slow strokes, but not so heavy that it runs, it will appear glossy and beautiful while it's wet when you do it right, then just stand back and let it dry. It will look as good dry as it did while it was wet, and you don't even need to wet sand, especially on a small part like this one. Avoid my mistake, test your can before you apply it to the part, if it comes out clumpy don't spray your part. If it comes out smooth and shiny, you are in business. Thank you for watching and taking the time to ask your questions, best of luck on an orange peel free result.

    • @romant1703
      @romant1703 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These cans of cheap spray really don't atomize very well. That's why the orange peel. You can go to the automotive paint store and buy a 2k can of black trim paint and it'll atomize better. Also, when painting, do 50% overlapping and hold nozzle at 90 degrees about 5 inches above surface.

      Don’t think he used a clear coat. I came to the comment section to see if anyone else mentioned the lack of clear coat.

    Looks great man!!! I'm about to paint the surround on my tacoma. Wha kind of clear coat did you use the 2nd time?

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used duplicolor automotive clear, here is an amazon link if it helps: amzn.to/2oNDBuz
      Slow heavy strokes, and it came out like glass, no sanding or buffing needed. Best of luck on your project, I am sure you are going to love the end result.

      +Auto DIY Thanks a bunch man!!! I'm about to lay down the color coat right now. I'm following your video and so far I haven't had any problems.

      +Auto DIY update, got a couple of splotches on the top part of the surround but I can fix that later if it becomes an eyesore. I'm kinda nervous about using heavy coats because I don't want any running in the clear coat.

    Does the paint peel off? If so how long did it take? I'm asking because I went to a body shop to get this done on my Tundra but they said it wasn't worth it because it'll peel off quickly.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not had any peeling issues, after 2.5 years of driving it does have a few tiny chips in it but that is the nature of anything painted on the front of a truck . This is one of my favorite subtle changes to this truck, I just wish I did it sooner.

    How come you didn't use plastidip? Was it just to get the color match? thanks for the videos.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PlastiDip would have been a lot less work and reversible, I just really wanted a subtle factory looking touch and I couldn't be happier with the result.

    After u wet Sand it did u apply more Clear Coat. And before the primer do have to sand the grill or just a real good cleaning

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Heriberto Martinez You shouldn't have to wet sand the clear if it sprays well, I had a crappy can of clear so I didn't have any choice, and yes I applied a new coat of clear over the top after wet sanding to make it glassy. Before primer clean it really well with degreaser/wax remover, then sand the heck out of it, then clean it as well as possible before hitting it with etching primer. Best of luck to you on your project, and thank you for watching and posting your questions.

    So it's been over 2 months now since you have done this DIY. How has It held up? Any chipping of the paint or anything you would have done different besides the clear coat? Nice work by the way. Planning on doing this to my Tundra but mine is salsa red.

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is holding up great, no chips at all (yet). I will give it more time, after about 6 months I will make a follow up video to show you how it's doing. Good news though if it does chip, it's not that tough to fix. I think it will look great on your salsa red truck too, this is one of those changes that I wish I made years ago. Good luck with your project.

    I recently did this same thing on my truck based off of your video, I used dupli color clear and for some reason I can't get a glossy finish like on my hood.

    • @mitch9509
      @mitch9509 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this post is old. But just in case you need to know how on another project. Don't use dupli-color clear or any other 1 stage clear. Use a 2k clear from a auto paint shop or find a good 2k clear on amazon with good reviews. They also sell them in cans that you push a red button on bottom to release the catalyst or hardener. 2k clears have 2 parts.

    So when you got done water sanding the clear coat did you give it another coat of clear? And did you buff it after everything? It turned really good I wanna try to do my truck lol

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes after sanding I put on another coat of clear, no need to buff the new coat of clear it came out like glass.

    Could I just use any self etching primer? And how did this hold up? Thanks so much for the diy!!

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just any self etching primer will do, needs to bond to chrome. This is a good bet, available on Amazon: amzn.to/3CMrLFC
      Mine has held up great, I still have and love this truck and this is still my favorite subtle change.

    Looks nice man

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to post your questions, lift is just a Toytec 3 inch leveling kit up front, with the 1 inch front differential drop and a 1 inch lift in the rear. Tires are 305/55/20's

      No pealing yet, there are a few small chips though that I don't love. I will check out 2K clear for the next project. Thanks for the tip.

    Also what paint did you use for the top coat my truck is the same color its a very good match

    • @AutoDIY
      @AutoDIY  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trevor James I picked up the color matched paint from Amazon, the seller's name is "scratch wizard". Beware it is the most expensive spray paint you will ever buy. I imagine there are less expensive ways to go, but their color matching is perfect. Same process could be used for your front and rear bumpers. I bet it turns out great. Good luck with your project.
