    First off, always use a block when sanding otherwise the sandpaper will cut more material under your fingertips.
    Prep sol is essential before painting. It promotes adhesion by removing oil and grease.
    When you use tack rags, work in one direction. If you work back and forth like he did, the captured dirt will be left behind on the panel.
    Rotate the tack cloth so the inner surfaces are used too.
    When you squeeze the trigger on the paint can, don’t start painting in the middle of the panel. Always start off the edge and finish off the other edge.
    Mask those areas you don’t wish to paint. If you use newspaper, be wary of the small holes found in newspaper. I use butcher block brown paper.
    If you paint the first coat in a horizontal direction, paint the next coat using vertical strokes.
    On a metallic job, the final coat is known as a fog coat and is not directional.
    Wear a painter’s mask. Cancer is not fun.
    Don’t paint outside.
    Orange peel is caused by too much material applied too quickly.
    The first coat of rubbing compound is coarse. You can also use 1500 grit wet sand.The second and third application of rubbing compound uses a less abrasive compound.

      Definitely $700 in Aus, but the best part is the pride in doing it yourself. Every time that you look at the vehicle you remember doing it. The only problem is that the clear coat will probably fail long before the factory job. These jobs are good to do just before you trade in the vehicle.

    I am a retired Auto Body and paint specialist and I have to say that I am impressed. Doing all that using only hand sanding must have been excruciating! You also pulled off the painting aspects of it, using spray cans! Back in my day, they had spray cans, but no one seriously used them to effect a base/clear spot repair! I am assuming they have come a long way with the formulation of paints to pull that off. We mixed all our colors peruse, and They have been base/coat, clear/coat for years. We always added a catalyst to dry and cure the final clear coats. When I started painting in the early 1950's we had alcaid Enamels and Nitrocellouse Lacquers. The lacquers went on kind of like what you did in your video and dried fast, and finally polished out to blend with the old paint. I'm saying that spot repairs could take place in the middle of a painted area, you didn't have to paint a whole panel then. You did have to have basic knowledge of matching colors, but that is a whole nother topic. GREAT JOB!

    • @ClintHolland
      @ClintHolland  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James. I guess they have come a long way with spray cans. I did end up buying a 2 part clear coat for next time as I have been told they are much better than the standard cans but I haven't had a need for it yet. And hope not to.

    Don’t listen to all the negative stuff. You did a great job. I just did my whole rear bumper and my mistake was I didn’t use a spray gun. I think cans are great for spots like your bumper. I learned from your video about sanding so thank you and I hope it will help me when I re do my bumper.

    • @ClintHolland

    • @joepoe8861
      @joepoe8861 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish but when it’s that large of an area I saw a lot of spray lines. I think with a spray gun it’s the coverage that will make a difference. I heard some companies will ask if you want a wider spray when you order your color thru a can. I just got the exact color with duplicolor. Hey, you have given me an idea. I should video tape it and see if there is a difference. I rather see mistakes and how to correct it then a perfect job. Thanks brother once again.

    You have to start somewhere. How did the repair hold up? Normally shops won’t due this kind of repair (smart repair) because the clear coat can peel at the edges. Basically you think of the edges of the clear coat being two separate pieces of land that run over the other and start to peel back. To avoid this you generally you sand the entire bumper and clear edge to edge. Like I said though, you did a great job for a first timer. Hats off to you.

    Fantastic job for your first attempt! I really liked your commentary. I have a similar situation. We scraped the side of my painted wood fence, pulling into a tight driveway, that left paint on the truck and removed a little bit of auto paint on the front bumper. I will have to get it fixed professionally because the paint on my truck is a very specific color that is hard to match. On the same week, someone rear ended my bumper. So I am hoping, if I go through insurance, we can fix it all. Anyway, just wanted to comment that I enjoyed this video and your process.

    That was a great job! Much better than my attempt, but seeing your video gave me the courage to do it! Many problems included my adhesive spray ran like water and didn't know how to clean it off. Spread out over five days because of constant rain showers in my part of the UK. Time consuming because having to keep masking over after rain ruined it! Have just applied my third coat of paint, prior to clear coat, and can now see imperfections in the filler compound! Now in two minds whether to accept the small 2 inches showing proud, or say hell with it, and go back to sanding that part down, prime etc that part from beginning. Still feel great after getting quoted £350 to £550 by professionals. Again, had the courage to save around £500 (about 700 dollars) after watching your video clip. Thanks so much for showing that anyone can do it - even a first timer like me. Saved me loads of money! Best wishes, Clint!

    • @rickrose2235
      @rickrose2235 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed that people who do this for a living have a few tricks to get a better finish:
      1, They run their hand over the surface feeling for any imperfections (Yes your hands should be clean of oils so wash them in a greese cutting dish soap or you'll transfer any dirt or oils from your skin and have a bad result).
      2, They apply a guide coat over the primer which guides you on correcting spots you may have missed.
      3. I've also have seen car painters take a tack cloth and just slide it over the surface with no pressure pressing down, just sort of drag the tack cloth and if it doesn't glide over the primer easily then that section is rough and needs some more sanding with 600 grit. You can also use a microfiber cloth.

    • @jewellguitars
      @jewellguitars ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickrose2235 Thanks for the advice given, Rick. The guide coat idea sounds like a good one. Now it's all done and waxed etc, I can see where I went wrong! Can only tell by using a straight edge! Have a two inch area where the edge reveals a tiny gap of about 1/16th inch underneath, where I guess I used too much elbow grease, taking that small area filler down just that tiny amount too much. Hard to believe that such a small dip would show up as a great dent to the naked eye when all finished!! Still, I'm a really happy pensioner and very grateful to Clint. He saved me about £600 (750 dollars?) with his video (Like him, I never did this before) giving me the confidence to even attempt it. Many thanks to all and best wishes from the UK!

      Thanks Clint. I did get overconfident with the great first result inspired by you, so I did try that small dent again! Disaster, but all my own fault. Only outside available, but I painted when the car was in the hot sun, about 2pm! Also didn't notice the 15 mph wind, and like you, should have learned to mask more of the car! 3 clear coats went onto my windshield, couldn't see a thing! Just cleaned off before completely dry and I am still laughing at my being so dumb. Got more paint and clear coat - following you I did such a good first job, just waiting on weather/wind as no reason why I can't do 3rd time! Still saved me lots of money that the shop wanted!! One thing I want to point out, I've seen several plastic bumpers with good-sized dents, one being my 2002 Camry. I watched several YT vids on the paintless dent repair and had nothing to lose - it has 205,000 miles on it and the clear coat's peeled - so I gave it a try. And the dent pretty much just popped out when given a couple whacks with a rubber mallet from behind. I've seen cars owned by strangers with similar dents in the rear bumper and wanted to tell them how easy it might be to fix but I didn't want to look like a crazy person so I kept it to myself... And I've tried doing "paintless" dent repair before (I just bent my own rods rather than buy the proper ones) and the results with just a little bit of practice, were encouraging if not perfect. If you have a car you want to put little or no money into repairing, paintless might be worth a try.

    BTW, the "prep solvent" is likely ethyl alcohol or paint thinner/nail polish cleaner. You needn't wash with soap and water between each step. Wiping down with a soft cotton cloth with either of those two solvents to make sure their is no grit left before proceeding to the next step works superbly. (This is true - and recommended - for wood finishing too.)

    Rather late in the day now but I repaired and repainted my front bumper which had scratches from parking nerfs when in supermarket car parks and it looks acceptable but I winged it. Now it's the rear bumper which has very deep scratches from where I reversed the car into a stone wall. Ok the sun was in my eyes but no excuse. I have made an 18 point list of everything you have done which includes all the various purchases and I shall follow it to the letter. Having sanded to damaged area now, all I found was that 180 grit didn't do the job and I had to go up to 120 and then finish with 180. But it's a Subaru and the bumper seems to be made of cast iron rather than plastic. That's as far as I've got until the stuff I ordered arrives, but I am now super confident thanks to you of getting an almost perfect finish as you have - unlike with my front bumper repair!
