Because when the song came out many "fans" declared it would never equal the first two. This is why "fans" are the most unreliable judges of the quality of something. They are too devoted to the past.
I agree, 1 has the benefit of kirk’s best solo on record. But here we get Pappa Het with years of wisdom. Nobody seems to notice but James has gotten better at writing lyrics as an older guy
the whole unforgiven trilogy is such a great story of anger towards everything/everyone around you, to slowly letting outsiders into your life and eventually understanding that oneself is the reason for a lot of grief. and by that it's very teaching for all of us.

If you want the songs that contain the most metal elements, try: Endless Night and No More. Both are Japanese singles (metal/rock sounds are generally more accepted there than in Korea).

As a 20+ years diehard Metallica fan, I think it is the best Unforgiven in the trilogy. Just the solo, is just a song in itself.
