1:50 CLAMPS! Thank you for showing how to mount wheels on the bench grinder. I hate those plastic gizmo's that go in a wire wheel. I use machine thrust bearings to take up slack on my wheels, they are pretty spot on for size like you said. Washers are toooooo big and the bench grinder hops around the garage. Those Winchester pliers are great. I love those trade shows. I have none like that where I'm at unless I'm not looking deep enough. Someday after retirement, I'll make it out there and have to go by and visit. I'm trying to figure out what to do with an old Athol vise I picked up for $10 bucks at a yard sale. It's a heavy vise and will smash one's thumb, don't ask. Love me some Mish Mosh Mondays!

I had it for years and then for some reason the hole inside started to work itself to be out of round. I never knew Winchester made pliers! Thanks for another great video 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for showing the Hess truck. My grandfather bought 3 of them for me when I was little for a few birthdays. Those little trucks probably had 100k miles on them from driving from my bedroom to the den to play with them. The tool show looked great. Thanks for the video.
Great tool collector's organization you have up there. Thanks for the tips on cleaning and balancing the wheels on your motorized polisher/grinders and the bearing lubrication trick. Many people don't realize that 3-in-1 Oil is an excellent shop lubricant, and is actually relatively inexpensive if you buy the bigger sizes. The larger sizes will last for years, and it never goes bad. WD-40 is is great for penetrating and cleaning, but 3-in-1 is a better lube and not paying for a spray can saves money; together they'll cover most of the things in your shop that you might need to break free, clean or oil.
You are so right! 3in1 has a whole new line of lubricants that are wonderful! The Red 3in1 is about a 10w and I use it all the time! This Blue 3in1 is a 20w and is what most motors call for as a lubrication! WD40 is a great cleaner! =D Thanks!!!!!!
Hi John, these videos really float my boat. Seeing what is at tool sales in various parts of the world really interests me and I don’t know why but I always get a bit of a kick out of seeing the same tools I have for sale on the other side of the world. At 0:45 you went past a little G clamp that is only about 2-2 1/2” opening but about 4” deep in the throat and I have picked up a few of those lately because I occasionally get a project where a G clamp isn’t deep enough and an F clamp with that depth of throat is just to big and bulky and a couple of those little camps have saved the day. Great job on the pliers, I find deciding how far to go is one of the hardest parts of restoration but I think you put it perfectly “the rarer it is, the less you do”. Thanks for introducing me to this whole world that’s actually right in my own backyard. Dans lathes are absolute works of art and you can tell how much he cares about them and keeps them in tip top shape. They can fit inside Herman Munsters lunchbox! That was awesome!! Anytime I find an old tool that is just rusted up and you can’t see any markings at all.... then the wire wheel starts to reveal a glimpse of a mark.... or is that just a mark from rust.... the the wire wheel takes the rest of the rust off and you see what you were hoping for the whole time!!! Very exciting!! That is what the hunt is all about right there! Finding treasure in things that other people saw as garbage basically. Great video please keep up the great work sir!!! PS- I really liked the little blooper at the end lol that’s a good way to get people to watch until the end!! I do anyways but just saying!!
I like your tip of using the saw blade to "dress up" your buffing wheels. My wife will appreciate me not slipping my buffing wheels into her washing machine ;)
On a slightly different topic.. today electricians started running the conduit and wiring up my workshop...Yaaaa! Tomorrow night I should have lights! I did notice something while I watched them work. I now know why linesman electrical pliers are often bashed up a bit on the nose. The electricians use their pliers to knock out slugs in the junction boxes and as hammers to square up the boxes after they've been screwed to the wall. Cheers from NC/USA
25 years ago my company relocated from one end of the property to the other side. The new building was state of the art for that time and had all union electricians. We would go there on our lunch breaks and after hours to check progress on what would be our new home... They ran dozens of conduit lines overhead and had them spaced and bent perfectly next to each other, it was just beautiful. Scores of lines were run overhead and it looked as organized and clean as if it were done for artistic reasons. You learn early that it seems there are two types of electricians, the bash thru sheetrock type and make a mess, or the perfectionist who makes everything look just beautiful... =) I love watching the second one work! =) Congrats on getting new lighting!

Firstly, Charlie is Gorgeous. Is he yours? I have a Boston and you can tell by her fine mustache that she is a lady. Also, if I had only seen this video three years ago. Found a used bench grinder, started learning about wire wheels, then buffing. This would have sped it up so much. Thanks for getting this class out there.
Nice tips. Whenever I'm selling tools I can't get them off the truck fast enough for the crowd to gobble up. (Not that I sell many tools). The pliers came out great!

That dollar tarp out on the lawn was looking good! Apparently Winchester tools are so collectible, people have been making fakes - grinding off and re-stamping tools with the Winchester logo.
The only reason I left the stamping and didn't go further on those pliers is because you don't see many of those around... Personally I wished I could have taken it to the next level! LOL Thanks N!

I hope you grabbed that Stanley scraper plane and Jorgensen 3/0 or 2/0 hand screw. It’s not a good idea to oil grease style ball bearings. Replacement on most bench grinders is fairly easy.

Hi Mike! I believe Winchester produced tools from about 1920 - 1930 just a short time as manufacturing goes... =) Their are a lot of fakes out there now! Imagine that! =D

When I don't go to the tool swap, there is stuff I want to buy. But when I'm there is barely anything catches my eye haha. Neat didn't know Winchester had lineman pliers! 2:45 I had a pair of those lathe legs sold them to a industrial furniture builder for $350! Still have the wood base for the lathe, I just pulled out the wood to make a vise mount base like you have for your vises. But the rain came down Saturday so I had to cut short my project .

Kathie, one in the same! They don't issue those anymore. They issue the Asp, extendable baton. We use nunchuka's where I work, great controlling tool and less injury with impact tools. We pull those out and our "clients" behave more, along with a red dot from a Taser.....

Scoutcrafter i have a question for you, what is the diameter of your wire brush wheel wire. is the wire 0.30mm or 0.20mm in diameter. i usually only use the .030mm wire wheel for heave rusted pitted tools and only use 0.20mm for fine unpitted minimal rusted tools. 0.30mm brush wire wheel are the most common sold at shops here in Australia but the 0.20mm are harder to find is shops.
From what I read, Winchester made tools from about 1920 to 1930. Now when they were getting into the tool market I don't know I they made all their own tools or had batches of different tools made for them? The prices were going so high that forgeries were made and sold... crazy!

I have a large SO KRL 1001 toolbox that has a stainless steel top, no top boxes. I have a lot of measuring devices I would love for the breadbox style. I guess I could buy a new one but I like the old ones much better. Edit: watching your channel has ruined my local tooltruck chances, I prefer finding something old and making it nice again than buying anything new. I spent a 3 day weekend repainting the first breadbox I bought. Tops and bottoms of all drawers, inside and out of the box. In red lacquer. 5 coats. A bad relationship destroyed it. My 14th wedding anniversary is the 3rd. Not bad this time!

I've been buying arbor spacers but won't anymore. The Winchester piers are really nice. How do they put the knurling on those type of handles?

You hovered over the giant G clamps, did you buy them? Good tip with the buffer wheels, what is your take on the tapered screwed buffer arbours are they any good? As for the pliers they look usable you usually polish them so well I would be afraid to use them.

Hi: I have a cheep, small bench grinder,1/3 hp, 5" that lacks power. I have replaced the capacitor (could I use a larger capacitor to gain power?) and it still lacks power, I can stop it with my thumb. Any suggestions would help. By the way, it was given to me 40 years ago and at that time it did not have much power. Would replacing bushings help? I want to use it with a buffing wheel and wire brush.

Yes! However I prefer a slower speed motor (1800 rpm or less) for wire brushing. Most Wire Wheels are good for 3800 rpm. Always check the max rpm on wire wheels... The good part about slow motors is you can use larger wheels..

Hello Mangas, believe it or not eBay is one of the best places for vintage tools! The fact that 99% of the population has no desire for rusty tools gives us a real edge! A good price is usually between 5-10 dollars depending on condition! =D
Hi Cindi! I love both! I think the MMO has more cleaners in the oil. Now just to be clear, the 3in1 regular oil (Red container) is a little thinner viscosity then the 3in1 (Blue container) motor oil... One is 10w and the blue is 20w... Not a huge difference but motor manufacturers that have the oiling cups usually call for the 20w oil.... =) Thanks!

Hi Brian... Honestly they are just motors with long shafts. The RPM range makes this ideal for buffing where as a 1700 rpm range would be better for the wire wheel... =D For Grinding wheels you want a shorter shaft for less deflection.
LOL That watch is close to 20 years old! I bought it from Shop NBC years back, its a special edition as there were only 1000 made! I think they still make it today with a Japanese movement.. =D Thanks!

The only thing about those clamps is they don't close all the way! The threaded rod is very short! =)

On a slightly different topic.. today electricians started running the conduit and wiring up my workshop...Yaaaa! Tomorrow night I should have lights!
I did notice something while I watched them work. I now know why linesman electrical pliers are often bashed up a bit on the nose. The electricians use their pliers to knock out slugs in the junction boxes and as hammers to square up the boxes after they've been screwed to the wall.

25 years ago my company relocated from one end of the property to the other side. The new building was state of the art for that time and had all union electricians. We would go there on our lunch breaks and after hours to check progress on what would be our new home... They ran dozens of conduit lines overhead and had them spaced and bent perfectly next to each other, it was just beautiful. Scores of lines were run overhead and it looked as organized and clean as if it were done for artistic reasons. You learn early that it seems there are two types of electricians, the bash thru sheetrock type and make a mess, or the perfectionist who makes everything look just beautiful... =) I love watching the second one work! =) Congrats on getting new lighting!

Firstly, Charlie is Gorgeous. Is he yours? I have a Boston and you can tell by her fine mustache that she is a lady. Also, if I had only seen this video three years ago. Found a used bench grinder, started learning about wire wheels, then buffing. This would have sped it up so much. Thanks for getting this class out there.
Nice tips. Whenever I'm selling tools I can't get them off the truck fast enough for the crowd to gobble up. (Not that I sell many tools). The pliers came out great!

That dollar tarp out on the lawn was looking good! Apparently Winchester tools are so collectible, people have been making fakes - grinding off and re-stamping tools with the Winchester logo.
The only reason I left the stamping and didn't go further on those pliers is because you don't see many of those around... Personally I wished I could have taken it to the next level! LOL Thanks N!

It’s not a good idea to oil grease style ball bearings. Replacement on most bench grinders is fairly easy.
I could justify buying a truckload of tools every meeting! I was super good only spending $20!

Hi Mike! I believe Winchester produced tools from about 1920 - 1930 just a short time as manufacturing goes... =) Their are a lot of fakes out there now! Imagine that! =D

Gary, I think Ohio has the most tractor and steam shows of any state!!!!!!! Just do a google search of antique tractor show or Steam engine show and you will be amazed!!!

2:45 I had a pair of those lathe legs sold them to a industrial furniture builder for $350! Still have the wood base for the lathe, I just pulled out the wood to make a vise mount base like you have for your vises. But the rain came down Saturday so I had to cut short my project .

UK here. I look at the tools on display and think what they would fetch over here as some are rare in the UK. I wonder what tools I see all the time would be considered rare in the US of A?

Hi Kathie! Yes!! Those were Steve's, they were Police issue from years ago... Funny story- Years ago when the police had to use those on someone they said they gave him a "wood shampoo" =D
Kathie, one in the same! They don't issue those anymore. They issue the Asp, extendable baton. We use nunchuka's where I work, great controlling tool and less injury with impact tools. We pull those out and our "clients" behave more, along with a red dot from a Taser.....

Scoutcrafter i have a question for you, what is the diameter of your wire brush wheel wire. is the wire 0.30mm or 0.20mm in diameter. i usually only use the .030mm wire wheel for heave rusted pitted tools and only use 0.20mm for fine unpitted minimal rusted tools. 0.30mm brush wire wheel are the most common sold at shops here in Australia but the 0.20mm are harder to find is shops.
That tool club looks great! I just picked up a Winchester ball pein hammer this weekend! Were they made by the firearms manufacturer?
From what I read, Winchester made tools from about 1920 to 1930. Now when they were getting into the tool market I don't know I they made all their own tools or had batches of different tools made for them? The prices were going so high that forgeries were made and sold... crazy!

Yeah but I am in Arkansas. I am serious about wanting another one of those. Your Brown Kennedy machinist box might work fine too. I have a large SO KRL 1001 toolbox that has a stainless steel top, no top boxes. I have a lot of measuring devices I would love for the breadbox style. I guess I could buy a new one but I like the old ones much better. Edit: watching your channel has ruined my local tooltruck chances, I prefer finding something old and making it nice again than buying anything new. I spent a 3 day weekend repainting the first breadbox I bought. Tops and bottoms of all drawers, inside and out of the box. In red lacquer. 5 coats. A bad relationship destroyed it. My 14th wedding anniversary is the 3rd. Not bad this time!

The 50/50 mix is Acetone and ATF, then WD-40 to get out the dirt! Finish up with 3in1 oil... -=)

I've been buying arbor spacers but won't anymore. The Winchester piers are really nice. How do they put the knurling on those type of handles?

You hovered over the giant G clamps, did you buy them? Good tip with the buffer wheels, what is your take on the tapered screwed buffer arbours are they any good? As for the pliers they look usable you usually polish them so well I would be afraid to use them.

Hi: I have a cheep, small bench grinder,1/3 hp, 5" that lacks power. I have replaced the capacitor (could I use a larger capacitor to gain power?) and it still lacks power, I can stop it with my thumb. Any suggestions would help. By the way, it was given to me 40 years ago and at that time it did not have much power. Would replacing bushings help? I want to use it with a buffing wheel and wire brush.

Yes! However I prefer a slower speed motor (1800 rpm or less) for wire brushing. Most Wire Wheels are good for 3800 rpm. Always check the max rpm on wire wheels... The good part about slow motors is you can use larger wheels..

Hello Mangas, believe it or not eBay is one of the best places for vintage tools! The fact that 99% of the population has no desire for rusty tools gives us a real edge! A good price is usually between 5-10 dollars depending on condition! =D

Is 3 in 1 oil better than marvel mystery oil?
Hi Cindi! I love both! I think the MMO has more cleaners in the oil. Now just to be clear, the 3in1 regular oil (Red container) is a little thinner viscosity then the 3in1 (Blue container) motor oil... One is 10w and the blue is 20w... Not a huge difference but motor manufacturers that have the oiling cups usually call for the 20w oil.... =) Thanks!
Great video. You and Sneelock posted a video within an hour of each other. Nice! Thanks for the buffer tutorial. I noticed your machine says it's a "buffer." Does that mean you cannot use a wire wheel with it? Are the specs different than a bench grinder? Thanks for posting!
Hi Brian... Honestly they are just motors with long shafts. The RPM range makes this ideal for buffing where as a 1700 rpm range would be better for the wire wheel... =D For Grinding wheels you want a shorter shaft for less deflection.
