Looks like Guy W Hawkins filed a design patent in 1941 for this wrench. D130024 Boos Tool co filed a very similar design also in 1941, also Kansas City MO (bet there's a story there!) D130015 None of the patent drawings show those pins. Not much online about Super Service MFG and the only photos I could find I think are of your exact wrench. There are more examples of the Boos wrench online, but still no pins. I am suspicious that the pins were added by someone to make a custom spanner wrench.

HELO PENNY!!!!! First off I want to thank you again for thinking of the channel and providing us a look at this very unusual wrench! Our friend Bert seen one of these at a garage sale and said it came with a assortment of jaws that would clip over the pins! (I pinned his comment so people can see) Now if I should come across a set of jaws I can pop in new pins and return this wrench to the original configuration. However the chances of that are slim and the wrench works so well now and looks just beautiful! I love the Stained Glass and Pyrography work you do! I have dabbled in both and love those crafts! LOL! Yes! No chemicals or fertilizer. One time I made a Weed Killer that Dave showed me from Vinegar, Salt and a tablespoon of detergent. I used that for the end of my driveway and it worked great for killing weeds in the stones. =) Thanks so much!
Lightning bugs are big here in Tennessee. About the first week of June, the Smoky Mountain National Park hosts a synchronous firefly viewing at Cades Cove. This event is so popular that they hold a lottery for tickets to it. People come here from all over the US. The male lightning bugs are the flashers and, due to the huge number and competition for the attention of a female, their flashing becomes synchronous. I know it's crazy but true. Remember that the Netflix program "Stranger Things" is based on East Tennessee and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. I used to work there and it does have some strange things. As a young boy in Kentucky we would catch lightning bugs and put them in a Mason (or Ball) Jar. Loads of fun running through the fields adjacent to our neighborhood and collecting them. I wouldn't think of doing that today, in fact, I won't even put any insecticides in my yard so as not to harm the insect population. The wild turkeys love the bugs.

Scout - On the belt sander what grit do you typically start with? Do you change grits during the process? If so, what would be the finest grit you would use?
Hi Steve! A good grit to start with is 220, then go up in grits like 320 and 400 but most time the belts wear down so an old 220 grit belt that's for acts like a 320 and then 400! =D
I LOVE the brass inserts! Nice touch. John, I'm having trouble with the belt sander when I try to use a makeshift platin like you do. I'm having trouble getting surfaces flat. I always seem to have a small angled facet on the face. Any tips?
Hi Brian! That is always a challenge, for flat surfaces a flat plain works best, otherwise it gets in the way! I am always walking a tight line when working on the belt sander!

Very nice contrast on those pins. I agree that there might be other ancillary components for that wrench. It also might be a specialized wrench used in manufacturing. The pins fit in a jig where you can't see and holds the wrench in a pre set spot to assemble muffler bearings or another specialized part. Either way it looks great. Thanks for the fun! :-)
My guess (maybe wrong) is the pins could be used for bending the framing for stained glass windows to infinite radiuses. The sides are flush enough to do that quite well.

Do you have a lot of shade in your yard? It’s my guess that the lightning bugs like shaded areas. My neighbors don’t have any trees, and very few lightning bugs. Just a guess and hunch on my part.
My neighbors also mow their lawn down to the dirt, and I mow on the highest setting. It’s possible that the lightning bugs like the cover of the taller grass.

Hi Matt, The best thing to do is get a assortment of brass rod and then if close you can turn it down to the right size, I turned this pin from 3/8" round brass to .254 and pressed the pins in with a dab of epoxy so they won't ever move. As for the threads, the key is to polish them on the buffer then a drop of 3 on 1 will make them like glass!!!! For the Yankee, same thing! Polish the mechanism then a drop of light oil will make it smooth as silk! Thanks Matt!

I was watching a video by RetroHax today and he used an angled screwdriver in one of his restorations. The screwdriver was the same one I have (straight on one end and Phillips on the other). It made me wonder what other types of angled screwdrivers are out there. Worth a ScoutCrafter video?
A specialist wrench designed for a certain type of fixing. It would be nice to know what if was intended for. Nice restoration, it was more interesting with the pins.
What would you say is your most useful tool during restorations? I don't have a belt sander or a bench grinder(I would use wire wheel). I am thinking about getting into tool restorations.
@@ScoutCrafter, I just bought and old Stanley 199 utility knife. I will probably start with it. I can do most of it with hand tools. Not sure what color I will paint it.
I think maybe those pins were a custom job put there by someone for a specific task, they are it the worst possible place and potentially weaken the jaws.
My sister and mother used to do stained glass and they had a tool that had the equivalent of those knobs that was used to grip the leaded channels of the structure that the glass sat within. It let them make arcs and angles.

Look, far be it from me to suggest "gilding the Lilly", but I almost expected at first to see you doing some sort of "brassy" gold treatment with the lettering on the wrench. Is that simply "over the top", could I still be bedazzled by the examples in the Clamp Challenge, or am I simply suggesting something to garrish for a an "in service" wrench?

Hi scout,your lucky to have the lightning bugs on your property, I would spend time watching em too, do you only see em at certain times of the year ?. Now as to the wrench ,it came out nice as usual, I guess you held back on a paint job lol, is it possible an engineer modified it whith the pins himself for a special task , in my working life as a mechanic I now and again had to modify a tool just to get to that one fastener that otherwise was impossible to reach,The ears on the designers who fostered this crap should have bean on fire. What a great design. I wish they made adjustable wrenches like that again. you could really get a nice snug grip on a nut with that design. I especially like when you clean up the knurling. Nothing beats the way nice clean knurling feels.
I think your an artist! I have no idea of the definition of an artist, but your are really creative and unique. I like the story on the bushes, must be hard to leave that behind at some point.
I just found an old eBay listing for one of these wrenches. $25 for the condition you started out with. Funny about the lightning bugs. I’m the only yard on my block with them also. All my neighbors have “low maintenance” barren yards. No trees, very few shrubs.., boring yards with no character. They don’t deserve the pleasure of lightning bugs. I also get interesting birds because I put out feeders. Most of my neighbors are recent transplants from nearby Queens and Brooklyn. It’s as though they don’t know how to be suburbanites.

The wife and I were just joking this morning how the birds are going to drive us the the poor house bc the 10lb bag of seed bought last week is almost gone...lol I could watch the Red Bellied and Downy woodpeckers all day though. If you left the holes open and you had others all with holes you could use multiple all used together with a length of threaded rod and stop nuts spacing them apart? May be to clamp or lift or bend something long evenly?

I saw one of these referred to as a machinist wrench. Maybe the pins are for installing or removing a chuck or tooling on a lathe or Bridgeport.
I think everything looks better with some contrasting brass!

Mosquitoes are such a nuisance! The Carbon Dioxide traps seem to be a great way to control them!

Bench polisher- You can mount wire wheels on it, fiber wheels, and buffing wheels... This is a awesome hobby!

Is that simply "over the top", could I still be bedazzled by the examples in the Clamp Challenge, or am I simply suggesting something to garrish for a an "in service" wrench?

Nice job as always! What do you have from the General tool mfg company? I just picked up a nice complete set of vintage center punches from General, and I have a couple of other things from them as well.

Hi scout,your lucky to have the lightning bugs on your property, I would spend time watching em too, do you only see em at certain times of the year ?. Now as to the wrench ,it came out nice as usual, I guess you held back on a paint job lol, is it possible an engineer modified it whith the pins himself for a special task , in my working life as a mechanic I now and again had to modify a tool just to get to that one fastener that otherwise was impossible to reach,The ears on the designers who fostered this crap should have bean on fire. What a great design. I wish they made adjustable wrenches like that again. you could really get a nice snug grip on a nut with that design. I especially like when you clean up the knurling. Nothing beats the way nice clean knurling feels.
Tron- Knurling is one of the coolest processes EVER!!!!! =D Like you said, a good knurl is unbeatable!!
I think your an artist! I have no idea of the definition of an artist, but your are really creative and unique. I like the story on the bushes, must be hard to leave that behind at some point.

I just found an old eBay listing for one of these wrenches. $25 for the condition you started out with.
Funny about the lightning bugs. I’m the only yard on my block with them also. All my neighbors have “low maintenance” barren yards. No trees, very few shrubs.., boring yards with no character. They don’t deserve the pleasure of lightning bugs. I also get interesting birds because I put out feeders. Most of my neighbors are recent transplants from nearby Queens and Brooklyn. It’s as though they don’t know how to be suburbanites.
It's our duty to nurture the wildlife in our areas! I go thru over 100 pounds of seed a month!!!!

I could watch the Red Bellied and Downy woodpeckers all day though. Love observing their behaviors.

If you left the holes open and you had others all with holes you could use multiple all used together with a length of threaded rod and stop nuts spacing them apart? May be to clamp or lift or bend something long evenly?

Pins for maybe taking bungs out of barrels? I have no idea BUT you can always put some back in if your bung gets stuck. Thanks, CS and lightning bugs here too!
Hi Lewie! I have adjustable pin spanners and they work well, if the pins were sliding it would make more sense to me... That way it wouldn't screw up the wrench part! LOL
I understand but maybe you'll find out is was a specialized somethingorother. Who knows? Not me!
You did a beautiful job on a very strange wrench. Cutting the pins flush with the jaws improved it.

This year they really are abundant here. I also let more of the hedges blossom! Maybe that is the reason!

@@ScoutCrafter only one, probably 20 or more years ago. I always thought the pins, if both were there, were used on notched fasteners or plugs that they had on some old oil barrels. I really have no idea other than that. But the one i saw was broke too.
