You make learning skincare so much more fun and a lot easier to understand: the way you break it down, pictures, and putting up those big medical terms on the screen. I used to have oily skin but then I started listening to my dermatologist, Dr Shereene Idriss, Dr dray. Now my skin has a balanced oil and water. My acne has cleared up. Everyday use of sunscreen, retinod, salicylic acid and a nice moisturizer has helped me most (gentle skin cleanser as well). Now I'm 16 and my skin is at its best stage. Thank you Dr Shereene Idriss.

    Ok, based on your do nothing recipe I was able to determine my skin type: combination skin. Some areas feel like they are tight and some are shiny. One esthetician told me I had oily skin, another said she didn't believe that. You have done an amazing job for me and my skin. (Following you)

  • @graphitebeans
    @graphitebeans 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I thought I had oily skin all through my teens and early twenties, but it broke out like crazy when I used oily-type products.
    One day I tried the wash your face and wait 3 hours trick and realised I had dry skin - now I treat it like it’s dry and dehydrated all the time and it’s the best skin I’ve ever had!
    Nice to know that wasn’t just a fluke and it’s actually the right way to diagnose skin type 🧡

    I can't believe it took me so long to find your channel! You give the clearest explanations for everything skincare related. This video has 100% confirmed what I always thought; that I have dry and sensitive skin.
    My skin will flake even after a sensitive skin moisturizer has been applied. I use a super moisturizing night cream in the morning (followed by another sensitive moisturizer with SPF 30, of course!). I barely use any products and don't even wear any makeup, but I still randomly get facial hives a few times a week (can't identify a pattern/cause). Even just a simple warm shower gives me big red blotches on my neck and neck (no exfoliation or even body wash/soap on my neck and chest).
    Now I am 32, and struggling to introduce active skincare ingredients such as acids and retinoids . . . more reason to be excited to have found your channel :)

I don’t need to cut out or dry out anything oil related!, I need to clear up zits AND moisturize my drier prone skin!😭😩

    Timing on this video is impeccable. My skin was for the most part doing well in the summer with my current skincare products. As soon as winter arrived, I started to notice that I’m experiencing minor but pretty frequent breakouts. I usually receive compliments about my skin, even from my dermatologist so it’s frustrating to see my skin trying to fight me now. I literally decided today that I was going to figure out my “skin type” so I can build the proper skincare regiment, accordingly. I really hope I can get this right.

    I am so glad to have found this video! I have always had sensitive skin with some dryness. I grew up in a tropical island with 70-90 % humidity so I never worried about hydration. When I moved to NYC my skin went crazy! As I have gotten older, my skin has become more dry and sensitive but now it is also dehydrated (despite the 3 liters of water a day that I drink). Finding products to treat all 3 without breaking the bank has been hard and after 3 years of going to a dermatologist suggesting products and regimes that actually caused eczema on my face and chest, I have been desperate.
    Armed with a more scientific definition than all the research I've done before, I feel better equipped to understand what to look for and how to document reactions and ingredients to avoid. Thank you!

    More please! Common sense is something of a misnomer. There is nothing common about having good sense. It is refreshing to find a doctor who explains skin types in a simple way that everyone can understand. And yes, combination skin is very frustrating to care for. At 64, my T-zone remains oily (think of a Texas oil rig) while the sides are dry (think of the Sahara desert.) That means I have to have products to deal with both skin types and it requires more money and time for me to keep my skin looking it’s best. Life goes on 😎

    Never had issues and have what you describe as normal skin. Didn’t have skin issues my whole life. Now have hormonal acne in 20s trying to pick up a skincare routine to help. Would be fascinating to see what you recommend for people who just started to worry about a routine “later” in life like myself.

    questions and a feedback!
    1) when you said wash, u meant just with water right if no makeup?
    2) can you have pores with dry skin?
    also, I recommend having some pictures in the video as you talk about different skin types, conditions, pore size comparison (e.g., when you said disproportionately large pores), whatever,
    so those who aren't sure, they can become sure that we do/don't have what we think we do.
    Thanks and love ur vids!

    Verdict: Skin type ~ Combination/Sensitive skin. Skin Condition ~ Dehydration. Yup, my teens we're a bit of struggle, but luckily my mum always told me less is more and that stopped it getting out of hand I reckon. Now I'm about 75% of the way there figuring out what it likes.

    I have normal/moderate skin and I have to say the stereotype that we can just play around with skincare and have zero consequences is simply not true. I actually find that because my skin is so balanced, adding any products to it tend to completely disrupt that balance and make my skin go haywire. For example, using any kind of non-water gel moisturizer makes my face greasy and I break out in the next day or two. Or if I use any kind of cleanser for oily skin (even CeraVe) it makes my face bone dry. So for me the hardest part is finding products that maintain my skin's natural balance, and not throw it out of whack. Because at the end of day, I still need to cleanse, moisturize, and use SPF.

    • @shereeneidriss
      @shereeneidriss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right- but you also most likely rebound very quickly with no residual long term consequence. Hence the reason why I say you can play around and experiment to see what works for you- as you are actually doing. Sometimes if your balance is that sensitive then less is more. You might not neeeeeed all the above at the moment. Cleanser and spf are most likely the basics ur skin needs just now

    • @katiem.6135
      @katiem.6135 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shereeneidriss Hi thank you! Just a quick note- I didn't mean to question you as a dermatologist in my first comment. And you're totally right ofc, for the most part we do bounce back quickly and I actually have been trying just cleanser/SPF and it's been working great for me. I just think a lot of people say something like "normal skin people have nothing to worry about ever." But I think it's worth mentioning that even normal skin isn't always completely perfect, and because our skin is so balanced, we can cause problems by using products we don't actually need. In my case, I thought I had dry skin for the longest time, and used all kinds of products that all broke me out. But even after realizing I had normal skin (which took a while, because I thought normal skin had to be literally perfect), I didn't realize how few products I really needed. Everyone everywhere on TH-cam always tells you to "moisturize!" but every single product I tried broke me out, to the point where there wasn't a single day in 6 months I didn't have a pimple. I'm still suffering with a lot of post-acne hyper-pigmentation too, for which I tried the Ordinary's niacinamide (that also broke me out). But my point is that all of that could have been avoided if someone had just told me that 1. "Normal" skin isn't always perfect and that's also normal. 2. There is such a thing as disrupting balance in your skin, and so normal skin is typically best off with as few products as possible, and that in some cases more products could actually be harmful. But I've never heard that from anyone anywhere except from you in your comment to me just now. It's always, "Oh your skin is literally invincible lucky you we're so jealous." Meanwhile I had been breaking out for 6 months, which was supposedly impossible for our skin type.
