  • Learn how to release your ileocecal valve.
    The ileocecal valve is located between your small intestine and large intestine.
    The ileocecal valve is a good region to address in physical therapy, as it can be a contributing factor to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). There can be 2 reasons why too much bacteria is in the small intestine:
    1) Stomach doesn't have enough stomach acid. Lack stomach acid contributes to more junk, bacteria, and wastes in the small intestine.
    2) Ileocecal valve (between the small and large intestine); if it isn't closing well, bacteria can go from the large to small intestine. This can cause intense bloating. Visceral mobilization at the valve can help move well!

    This video is amazing . Years ago I was suffering from a hiatal hernia , and trouble swallowing . I learned this technique you performed in the video along with pulling down along the left rib in the zyphoid process and that helped me get back to normal . I like to check in on TH-cam and see what exercises people are uploading compare to 5 years ago when I had the issue , and I know this video is gonna help a lot of people! Plus whenever I find these videos it always reminds me to keep up on my exercises

    I don't understand why the majority of videos on this subject, including your own, focus on McBurney's point, which is where the appendix is located, versus the ileocecal valve, which is approximately over an inch above. I find moving the leg even stranger; what is it meant to achieve?

    • @drkatrinapt
      @drkatrinapt  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      That is because Mcburney's point corresponds with the ileocecal valve. I like doing the hip internal and external rotation because it is a way to release the valve with movement. All structures in the body never function alone. Moving other body parts/regions helps lengthen/mobilize the fascia around the abdominal area as well.

      I believe the illeocecal valve is controlled by the vagus nerve…Vit B1 is worth researching….

    This was very inspiring! I have a question however regarding the ileocecal valve. I have had many digestive issues for 2 months now, and the pain is low and dull and sitting exactly on this location, radiates mildly to the side and back of my waist.
    I am a person who is constipated, and am anxious to try this maneuver, as a closed valve seems to be the culprit, .. do you recommend this once a day? Thanks for the video presentation.

      Hi! Thank you so much for watching my video and supporting my channel. That is a really good question. Since you are constipated, I wonder if you have slow colon motility, meaning that the stool is moving very slowly in the gut. Stool that sits in the gut can cause discomfort and an ache, if it isn't moving well and eliminating regularly (which is why regular and complete bowel movements are important). You can try doing this ileocecal valve release once a day, but also maybe try the colon massage! I will also link that below.

      Hi Steve! Try adding in some spinal/thoracic rotation exercises, diaphragmatic breathing, and walking for 10 minutes after meals. When you are walking, remember to swing your arms. It sounds obvious, but many people lack rotation in their movements. Rotation helps stimulate the gut, move things around, and lengthens/shortens the abdominal fascia to get things moving!

    Hello, I have a lot of flatulence, gas in my stomach and intestines, and my stomach is enlarged, what should I do?

    • @drkatrinapt

      Hello! It sounds like you're having bloating. Bloating is a condition when your intestines and digestive organs stay stretched (either due to food, water, or gas produced by plant based foods like fiber). The prolonged stretch of these digestive organs can be very uncomfortable. Here are a few things I would recommend: Going on a 10-15 minute walk (move your arms) after you eat to stimulate your colon motility. Diaphragmatic breathing (breathing) for at a minute before/after your eat. Chewing your food! This will help stimulate the enzymes to be released to facilitate better digestion! I have another video on bloating if you want to check it out! I'll link it below.

    Hi Dr. Wong, I am an IBS-C patient who suspects its due to slow motility. How many times a day would you recommend this for me and what else would you recommend?
    The way my daily bowel movement works is that it takes between 3-6 hours to finish(the past two months it has changed to having two bowel movements a day with similar amount of time taken to finish) a bowel movement. Just about almost every hour is when im able to release stool. I also experience excessive amounts of burping(also have trouble having complete burps and incomplete burps is a warning sign ive noticed that my body gives me to let me know I’ll most likely have another bowel movement later on in the day) and passing gas. A lot of times, i can feel stool on my lower left part of my large intestine and a lot of times, the area where my diaphragm is, my intestines feel tight around that area. This is ruining my life and I don’t know what to do.
    Edit: also need to mention, i do experience brain fog, disorientation and fatigue as well as having a difficult time standing up for long periods of time because of my intestines feeling active, giving a feeling of urgency to release stool.

      Hi! Thank you so much for these questions! It sounds like you are very constipated - especially if you are burping (it means that the gas is being trapped up in your intestines, because the stool could be blocking the rectum and the gas has no where to go, except up!). IT also sounds like you have slow colon motility because you are not able to eliminate stool in 1 time. It shows me that you have "incomplete emptying."
      Yes, if you are constipated with IBS, you likely have slow colon motility. I recommend doing the colon massage at least twice a day. Once in the morning. Once in the evening before you sleep.
      I also recommend diaphragmatic breathing, which helps stimulate colon motility, 10-15 minutes of exercise/walking after meals, and chewing your food. Doing diaphragmatic breathing helps massage the colon, and get things moving! Other stretches that are great include spinal movements, like cat/cow, thread the needles, seated spinal rotations/twists, etc. Anything that gets your spine moving helps get the colon moving.
      Also make sure you are drinking enough water, and staying hydrated!
      If you are having more hard stools, I also recommend more soluble fiber into the diet, to soften the stools. Think chia seeds, egg whites, the insides of fruits (not skin of fruits), oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, peas.
      Here is also a good video on how to improve your colon motility and has good tips! th-cam.com/video/EwOixl2uzRc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=2fG0_qmmNgHm1rzn

      Many people with constipation also have symptoms of brain fog, and fatigue. There is something called the gut-brain axis. The state or status of the gut will have implications on your brain/cognitive health.

      Let me know if you have more questions as well :) I'd love to help! I see so many patients with slow colon motility and constipation - they really do benefit from seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist, which is what I do!

      @@drkatrinapt Thank you for the reply back! I’ve started on the diaphragm breathing exercise and started doing the colonic massage as you recommended. Ive been noticing small improvements on getting more stool out! I was wondering, is there anything I can do while on the toilet to help get things moving along? I tried doing a massage on the toilet and I noticed it made me release more within several minutes. I will be trying some spinal movements starting tonight! I can’t wait!

    • @drkatrinapt
      @drkatrinapt  25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @kuukuukaachoo Yes - you could also adjust how you are sitting on the toilet to make sure the pelvic floor muscles are relaxed to allow stool to come out more easily. When sitting on the toilet, 1) Lean forwards from the hips, 2) Have a squatty potty or stool underneath the feet so that the hips are HIGHER than the knees, 3) arch your lower back/lift the tailbone (that helps lengthen the pelvic floor), and 4) Breathe on the toilet - think about breathing into your anus muscles! Yes - doing the massage on the toilet is also a great option, I'm so glad you're seeing a little bit of improvement already.
      Bowels love routine. So, being consistent with how you eat, exercise, breathing, colon massage, hydration, etc. is all very important :). Please let me know if you have more questions!
      I used to struggle with constipation, and I also noticed my reduced energy levels and fatigue throughout my day, and having a regular bowel movement daily will DEFINITELY help with your energy levels, brain fog, cognitive function, and mood. :)
