    What's 4K like for gaming? Time to find out! And no, you don't need a 4K monitor to watch this video. It's designed with HD in mind... but will probably look slightly nicer if you watch it in 4K, though youtube currently limits it to 30 fps :( See below:

    People who complain about him using a mid-range graphics card need to shut up because he said he was using it to see how mid-range gaming pcs would run, not high end 2x GTX 980's and an i7-6700K

    • @MCMinerHQ
      @MCMinerHQ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +2kliksphilip that's super respectable. I also have the same internal policy. I scrounge ebay for the older cards that were considered epic, like the HD4870x2 from AMD. I also took a GTX680 and put a cpu heatsink on it. I found that a crossfire of two HD4870x2's can keep up with GTX960's and similar.

      2kliksphilip I don't see the need for 4k as of today mainly because I would enjoy a much better gaming experience with my 144Hz monitor rather than with a 4k 60Hz monitor. I have a high-end GPU so I can run most of my games with anti aliasing or super sampling which delivers a respectable graphical experience compared to 4k.
      I also completely agree on your statement as the 980 Ti is around $1000 AUD! That's only 500 pounds but still! A lot of money!
      I don't know what currency you use but I use AUD, which is a really weak currency at the moment which makes it hard for me to get higher end stuff.
      I did recently get a new rig not that long ago though it was $2.5k AUD which is only 1.25k pounds! Is that a lot of money for british people?
      For you I recommend waiting until the next generation AMD Graphics cards come out or if you can't wait for good 4k cards, go with the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 If you have enough case space and money to spend :/ as it is a beast of a card and also a beast that will take all of your money!
      My rig has a R9 390X (Overkill) and an i7 4790k which i would recommend to everybody because it is a beast of a cpu for a decent price @ 4.4Ghz Turbo clock!
      Keep up the good content,
      ~Cooper

      ***** His whole point was to see what 4k was like on older cards, as he said in the video. So basically his whole point was to put a car engine in a truck to see how it ran and to no surprise, not very well but that was his point in the first place.

    so this is why 1440p exists. best of both worlds. I have a 27inch 1440p monitor and my gtx 770 runs it just fine. 4k isn't ready, 1440p is.

    • @foufoufun
      @foufoufun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +EliteSniperTV Heh, I wouldn't be so sure. I have a 770 as well and it reached its limit with Black Desert at 1080p (~45 fps on max settings except that silly high end setting that does nothing but reduce popping a bit). I like to max out graphics and keep my 60 fps so like the guy said in his video, 1080p is still the sweat spot and will probably stay that way for 2-3 more years. It's one thing to be able to play the current games at high resolution on max settings but it's nice to be able to still do it with the same computer 3-4 years later without having to upgrade every year.

    • @EliteSniperTV
      @EliteSniperTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +foufoufun0 I mainly play cs, and I don't mind lower settings. also you don't need anti aliasing. in other games I'm usually on high for most things

    • @foufoufun
      @foufoufun 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      For latest games, that is the best strategy. 4K is here but it is still expensive. For me, having the graphics on highest is a bigger priority than having a huge resolution. 1080p still do just fine. My next monitor will be a 144hz and probably be wider than 16:9 aspect ratio. I'm just waiting for this one I have right now to break (=.

    • @DuecePiece
      @DuecePiece 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm actually running the Dell 34" 21:9 with an i7 Alienware Alpha, ultra settings on Black Mesa looks incredible. I would love to know why Nvidia wouldn't allow me to play Fallout 4 at 21:9 w/o an update, I do and it looks amazing. Get another update yesterday to enhance gaming even further and now my Fallout won't allow me to go over 1080p, anyone else have this issue? Or issues with Nvidia updates in general? If so I would love to hear them and maybe a possible solution to these insane updates

    • @marcjan2500

      I can wait. I have dual 780 TI and dual Asus 144hz monitors. I paid $2,500 USD total for this system a few years ago. I can afford it, but do not want to upgrade right now, until Directx 12 and the occulus rift, and the new CPUs and GPUs are out next year. 4K and VR will mature by then. 4K is still a waste at this time, at least for me. If I can't game at 100-144Hz at 4K yet, why bother?

      2kliksphilip Aye, as a stepping stone between the mediums right now it may be, but right here, in the now, you're currently sitting on the best of both worlds, and currently have some tangible benefits over 4k for general day to day stuff which include no need for text scaling (don't fuck this up windows 10), and actually not getting such a huge performance hit for running that fat resolution, whilst still maintaining that extra ~70% boost in pixel count. Also, I don't think I'll ever go back to 60Hz after seeing the light shine upon me from the heavens that is high-refreshrate monitors *Angelsong*

      Ashley yeah, if quite well is barely 60fps.
      My point is, to this day, 4k is absolutely useless for gaming (my opinion, of course). Devs could be pushing for higher texture detail, model complexity or sth else.
      The only thing that makes sense to me when it comes to upscaling is not relying on msaa, and the fact that at 1080p the cpu is the bottleneck.

      DARTH VIRAL My thoughts too. I can’t quite miss what I've never experienced and I’m thankful for not appreciating how behind the times I am. I do plan to do that as soon as the Acer XB271HK and Asus PG27AQ screens are released and reviewed, though. I've put back enough money to buy two 980TIs to finish upgrading my system into something that will hopefully last me just as long. The only thing I have left is to decide 2k/144hz or UHD at 60 - 70hz. I have no way of knowing what my preference would be..and unfortunate side effect of never being exposed to either of them.

    First we need to make 1440p a standard reachable resolution before jumping to 4K

    • @noillaas
      @noillaas 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** And how much did your rig cost? When I say a reachable standard, I mean it should be affordable just like 1080p gaming.

    • @noillaas
      @noillaas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** See right now, a 970 can play 1080p games amazingly, but 1440p it plays them pretty good at around 40-50 fps. It's not hitting minimum 60 fps yet. The 970 is also around 450$ where I live, so that is not affordable yet. I say in the next year or two a higher tier version of a GTX xx70 series will do 1440p gaming just fine, but the cost is the issue.

      2kliksphilip FPS has ALWAYS been an issue for me. My pc is literally 9 years old and I'm still using it to play games like tf2 and cs:go etc.... My fps is literally no more than 30 in csgo and in tf2 (even with an extremely low quality config) it's 60ish. This is why some cs:go maps are unplayable for me because I'm gettting 15 fps and it's really jittery like cobblestone and the new "log" map. However I'm playing perfectly fine with 30. Will getting that higher fps mean that I'm going to get noticeably better?

    One point about fidelity and resolution: the higher the resolution used, the lower ALL other details matter (mostly antialiasing). Of course render/draw distance is important for competitive games too. The point is to experiment with all settings so you get what works best for you, with each computer.

With all that performance to push 4k. It help to run ouclus Rift perfect at 1080p.

    •  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Tropicocity I just bought a 4k monitor with my 970 ftw, and it really depends on the game. Mad Max can run on ultra perfectly at 4k, and I've been seeing MGSV is the same. Most games were never made with 4k in mind though. TW3 is definitely one of them...

      +Wendell Radford Oh there's definitely games you'll be able to push with a single 970, but usually I prefer to be in a situation where I can handle the Majority of new games at a given res - I definitely wouldn't be able to maintain 60fps on more than half the games that I play these days, so until 4K becomes affordable I'm trying to steer clear :)

    Ive been debating this myself. I want a new monitor but I am not sure if I should go 1440p at 144hz 4k at 60hz or just keep my 1080p at 60 or even going 1440p at 60. While a lot of people in the comments are crying about your gpu I get the general idea which is that the visuals aren't that huge of a difference especially on older titles. I think that will likely be the case for right now as many games simply aren't taking advantage of 4k yet. They simply just support it. I don't have any real issues with 1080p but I would really like a higher refresh rate.

      nope. 670 cannot max out games at 1080p. you need 970 or 980 for that. 1440p should be 980ti. you can max out games for a while there. and 2 980ti s sli will be for 4k

    • @prodfife
      @prodfife 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jaydeep Deshpande you can max out most games at 1080p with a 280 or 960...

    • @gamer-ff6mh
      @gamer-ff6mh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Max out for me means using stuff like NVIDIA hairworks and manage a constant 60 fps. Basically, it should be able to take literally all that you throw and maintain atlas 60 if not higher fps.
      I remember... I could not maintain stable 60 fps with hairworks at close range when I played Witcher 3 with a single 970. But I think you can maintain almost 60 fps if it is a single 980 instead. But I agree that most games will be maxed out by a single 970 at that resolution. If you have 2 970s you can max out literally everything at 1440p in general, but I found it hard to max out Crysis 3.... So basically, there are exceptions. In general I would say single 970/980 is best for 1080p, 2 970s or one 980ti is best for 1440p and 2 980ti's is absolutely needed for 2160p...IMHO...

    • @Tappettava
      @Tappettava 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TragicGreek I am still running 980 Ti SLI in 1440p and can confirm that it would not be enough for 4k. You would have to drop a lot of quality settings to keep stable 60 fps, but low resolution meshes look still low resolution in 4k.
      Or then you can enjoy a cinematic 30 fps. Don't know about the new 1080 Ti's but for Maxwell 4k was too much to handle.

      2kliksphilip There is no reason to even attempt gaming at 4k with a 670. I get that it is not the purpose of this video but you can clearly tell the difference between 4k and 1080p unless of course you have impaired vision.

    • @blackopsy9

      2kliksphilip I have no idea how to even go about the video making process. Its not my thing.
      I do however possess 3 monitors. I have my monitors in a functional collage of sorts. I have a 4k monitor that I use mainly for gaming, a 1440p Korean IPS I use to surf the web mounted above my 4k and a 1080p IPS directly to my right for Foobar2k and other non-internet related productivity/fun.
      I would say I have a fairly wide spectrum of monitors at my disposal to make a comparison. The difference is simply night and day. To say there is no difference is simply... well... arrogant to say the very least. It is comparable to people who say the human eye cannot see past 28fps to make console peasants feel better. Its just a flat out lie.
      The only concession I can make is using a 4k monitor at present is both stressful on your hardware as well as your wallet. There is also an issue with non-hardware related aesthetics due to the limited amount of monitors on the market period.
      TL;DR
      People who say they can't tell the difference between 4k and other resolutions are just as bad as people who say they cannot tell the difference between 28fps and 60fps+.

      Please don't game 4k on a 670, its a crime.

      i742 Excuse you? Yeah, try that creator vs. critic argument, we all know how that goes.
      Oh, you don't know? You don't have to create something to critique something. An art critic has most likely never lifted a brush in his life yet has a deep, in depth knowledge of both how art is made and what makes art, art... The same applies to movie critics and just about any type of critic imaginable.
      Now while you try to use all two brain cells to figure that one out, I'll be on my 4k monitor, enjoying it.
      P.S.
      You can tell the difference.

    This vid is 2 years old but still relevant. I bought a 4k/60 monitor a few months ago (at same price as 1440) but although my gtx970 (+140core/+350mem) can do Skyrim at 4k, when I try to use 8xAA and 8xAF it crashes. So I can only use 4k with no AA/AF which still looks good, but will game at 1440p until I get a better gpu. Think I will get a Vega for the 16Gb of HBM2, that should future proof me for awhile until I can afford a 4k/144 monitor a few months later. LOL

  • @Pan_Z
    @Pan_Z 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Turn off AA at higher res. You stop needing it
    Edit: As much AA. I've noticed you need significantly less. 2x MSAA providing nearly ideal coverage. I would avoid post-processing though, unless one desires a 4k image smeared with vaseline.

  • @wyattbakke264

    why do people care about getting 200 fps when a 60hz monitor won't even tell the difference between 1,000 fps and 85?

    • @wyattbakke264
      @wyattbakke264 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Super Kawaii Kitty It's really not that complicated. If you have a 30Hz monitor your FPS is capped looking like 30 FPS, even if you get 400 fps.

    • @wyattbakke264
      @wyattbakke264 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Super Kawaii Kitty the higher framerate is just guaranteed a smooth gameplay experience, though if you are getting a steady 90 fps vs a steady 300 fps it will be the same on a 60 hz monitor.

      +Weega 60hz monitors can tell the difference. They're just not meant to go above 60fps, and thus massive screen tearing occurs until vsync is on.

  • @infinnitegamer244

    The thing is about 4k is that in games you dont need to enable AA because there are so many pixels on screen thats one of the upsides of 4k resolutions.

    I don't bother playing on 1920x1080, tbh if I play at 1.5x the output res, it looks considerably better and gives my eyes all the details it searches for. As an example, gta, which lets you do that in its options.
