      Those prices felt stable for so long. I had a GTX280 for £300 back in 2009 which failed in warranty and replaced with a GTX470 (valued approx... wait for it... £300) in 2010, which later I replaced with a £300 GTX970 in 2014, for about 2.5-3x performance. I'm on a 1060 6GB now (970 died in warranty - I'm told I have poor luck with GPUs...).
      Six years after I bought that 970, I can now spend £300 and get a 1660ti or RX5600. I would've been genuninely better off getting a 980ti and have 1660ti level performance for the past half decade for the same cost as 970 + 1660ti...

That was before 3000 was announced, I convinced myself that it would be healthy to leave gaming for a whole focus on my studies and build a new one for Christmas. I still don't have a PC till this day. The one I sold to my friend can go for literally 2x the price I gave it to him for. Oh well, he's at least enjoying it. Gave him my steam so he can start gaming before I get my PC and he would make buy his own games. It seems my friend took the biggest W throughout this shit lol

      I'm waiting for DDR5 to release (and work well with a reasonable pricetag). By that time we've probably got some substantial improvements for CPU and GPU too and I can just buy an entire new rig without worrying of backwards compability of my mainboard and stuff.
      That PC will probably last until some component fails then, since I don't think games will become substantially more demanding than they are now tbh. Or at least until VR _really_ takes off and becomes the new standard (which I honestly don't think will be the case in the next couple years either - if ever).

    I was literally the other day checking what build i want to get, mostly for editing, BUT i also want a good graphics card that will hold me for years to come so i can game without stressing about my GPU, and the 1660 TI doesn't look appealing to me at all, bear in mind the price point as well.

    It's 2023, and the $199 dream has almost been. The ARC A750 the RX 6600. The former can be had for as low as $199 and the latter being available $209 at the time of speaking, which is close enough. Both have RT support and FSR/Xess upscaling. Raw performance is a leap, too, with the RX 6600 being about twice the performance of the 480. They're five years apart, so it's not mindblowing, but it's still a lot. The only problem is that the RX 6600 is a last-gen product and that ARC A750 is a first-gen product that lacks mature drivers and Intel-optimized games.
    Not gonna lie, I'm pretty excited for next gen. RX 8000 series and Intel ARC Battlemage, specifically. With chiplet development maturing more and more in AMD, alongside Intel committing to low prices, the low- to mid-range GPU market could become so competitive that even Nvidia might start thinking twice about their pricing. We'll probably not see a $199 card at release, but it could be pretty damn close. But we'll have to see.

      I'm not entirely convinced about the excuses being trotted out with regard to shortages. A big factor could be the absence of brick and mortar opportunities to offset the scalpers. Originaly once the initial seller got their money they could have cared less about the cards destination but now they can see that these scalped prices are being met they too have jacked up their prices. Like you say this could ultimately kill the market for gaming GPU's. That would be bad news for customers and companies alike.
      EDIT:
      Just checked a couple of sites with regard to GPU pricing. Lets just say the only way I'm going to get a current gen card is if I set my own bot onto the problem. F*ck that.

    Preach, it’s hard as hell getting decently priced cards these days! I’m still trying to ride this crazy market out, hopefully to finally buy my first dedicated gaming PC. ;-;

    GDDR6 being 11.5$ per gb and gpus having 12GB of VRAM killed the 200$ GPUs. GDDR5 in 2014-2017 was 5.5$ per GB and the rx 480 had 4GB of GDDR5, that's 22$ for VRAM. The rtx 3060 has 12GB of GDDR6, which's 138$ just for VRAM. Why did ram stop getting cheaper with new technologies and process nodes?
    Also, Intel and Nvidia for the past 10-11 years and AMD for the past 3 years have been milking us.
    And no during the hd 4000 series, the best GPU from AMD was the hd4870 and it was 200$. The hd 6870 for 200$ played everything at the time at 1080p and in 2012 after AMD cut the prices a 200$ hd7870/7850 played everything at 1080p ultra at the time. HD5770 was great too and it wasn't even 200$ iirc.

      I heard nvidia is going to release a 6 gig model of the 3060 like what they did with the 1060 how it had 2 versions if that’s the case the wouldn’t the 3060 6gig fit in that 270-280 dollar price range at the expense of 6gigs of vram?

      @@jackandeson6302 well 6GB of VRAM is 69$, so 330$ - 70$ is 260$.
      And 12GB of VRAM is way too much, people think that games really need that much VRAM just because most current/modern video game engines buffer the VRAM and it says that the game is consuming a lot of VRAM when in reality the game is actually reading and writing on 1/3rd of what the usage is.
