Why ZZ Plant Leaves start Turning Yellow!

- The leaves on your ZZ plant are turning yellow because of overwatering. This house plant absolutely hates having too much water in its soil. This plant is used to drought seasons in natural habitat, and that consists of completely drying out in between watering‘s. Your leaves on your ZZ plant are turning yellow because the roots are sitting in too much moisture.
To fix this issue, you should remove the root structure from the pot and take a look at it. Try to do a visual scan and see if the roots are starting to rot away. You will also be able to tell because if the roots are starting to rot, there should be a smell coming from the soil.
What you can do is gently remove the soil from those routes that have too much moisture and try to add a new soil mix to the pot and just re-plant the entire ZZ plant.

I moved into an apt that the previous owner left a plant behind. It was soo beautiful w a bit of brown. I thought it was a really good fake. Today I noticed yellow leaves and discovered TWO Months later this is Alive. The rhisomes were exposed and need to be covered. This made the whole stalk turn brown and yellow. I repottedd it. I'm so excited this plant is real.un- killable almost. Amazing!

Thank you!! Glad I found this out before I drowned her! My son gave me my plant a little over 2 yrs ago, and up until recently, it's been growing beautifully, even after having it for about 6 mos, and my cat chewed up quite a few of the leaves 😢. There's only one "stalk"(a new one) with 2 leaves that have turned completely yellow, and are almost dead, and 2 more small ones have begun to yellow as well. I'm 🙏🏽 it's not root rot. I actually plan on repotting it very soon. Great to know I can also use some cactus soil. Thanks again for the info ❤
Oh wow, I didn't know they only need watering once a month. I had my zz for over a year and this has never happened to her b4! Thank you for sharing this and I'll definitely take your advice and see if she gets better!

Yeah that is helpful. Our sad ZZ is in shade... I've popped it somewhere with more light.

Great info! Hopefully this is an easy fix for me. I have literally only watered my ZZ ONCE; and I got it over a month ago... Anyway, the plant got pretty upset with me for the watering. It's clear to me now that the plant is in the wrong type of soil!! I'm going to take your advice and repot (what I can of the plant at this point) in cactus blend. maybe like 70/30? I mean, the ZZ is pretty upset right now. He has dark spots formed on the stems of the shoots as well, which I also just learned, is a sign of overwatering. .. Wish me and my ZZ luck ! Orchid bark has pine in it and pine ties up nitrogen. I’m careful not to use it unless the plant really requires it.
Thanks for the info - my zz is full grown. I have noticed large bulbs surfaced at top of soil - do I need to add more soil?
I do I handle my z plant that has a long stem but only a few leaves at the top
Ugh, thanks! I split mine and the one I took to work is thriving but the one I kept at home is yellowing and not growing. Will water the one at home less and more light.

I have a raven zz and sometimes the newer growth leaves fade to red and eventually die. Any advice for that?
Ughh I purchased a big 4 foot ZZ from a friend and it was in a very small and cramped pot. When I repotted I guess the soil must have been too heavy because I started losing leaves and then entire stalks! I lost maybe 10 so far and they keep dying one by one. The crazy part is that babies are also growing! Lol wth?! I am Going to repot this today with better draining soil and take out any stalks that might show signs of fungus or root rot. Wish me luck!! Any and all advise is appreciated!
I have the same issue. Every time a new stem grows, an old one shrivels up and dies. Seems like it wouldn’t be root rot if it’s giving new growth, but why do the old ones keep dying off?
@@user-jn8tg6nw8j it beats me lol I have 5 new babies now and the older stalks are still turning yellow and eventually dying. I think all the old stalks will end up dying and all fresh growth will replace. It’s just weird, I’ve never seen a plant die and have babies at the same time lol
I’m new to it. It was really dry when I purchased from Walmart it has the string system and had 2 yellow leaves growing from soil. I poured out excess water moved near grow lamp is the grow lamp okay or should I do a window with low sunlight?
Hey I was having the same problem, I repotted the plant the roots were in very bad shape but after a month or so I noticed some new stems growing which now is a new problem because out of the 3 new ones 2 became dry and died not sure what caused that.
Can you help me with freesia flower plant? The leaves are becoming wrinkled and yellowing.

Am having a problem with new growth. Am getting new growth but it dies like almost a month later or the new growth begins to bend. To remedy this I repotted with new soil and miracle grow fertilizer. Am hoping this will work.

My zz plant is turning brown .. can it be sun burn ? I put it out by the east side of my house it gets the morning sun only.
The last time I watered my ZZ plant was March 15th 2024. I am going to wait a little longer before I water it again. May be sometime in July. What do you think about that. It's growing beautifully. ZZ gets indirect sunlight in the morning. It's near a lamp which I turn on when the sun goes in. ZZ seems to like it.

My Zz plant does not have new shoots and leaves are turning yellow. HELP 😮
My zz started yellowing from about 2 months ago. I watered it maybe 20 days back and also moved it to a brighter spot. I can't really tell if it needs more water or if it's overwatered. It's just less green that it used to be and one of the shoots are becoming yellow
I’ve watered maybe twice in the last two months, but they were a week apart IIRC and two entire shoots are yellowing but the roots look and smell fine and the soil is dry. I’m gonna add more cactus mix and orchid bark and place in a brighter spot
Now I am even more confused. I thought they had bulbs not roots. I water once every 4-6 weeks, spray for bugs( just to be safe) every time a get a few random baby leaves they turn yellow and fall off. These leaves are not even on a stalk. It makes me so sad.

Cause I repotted mine in cactus soil like a week ago and have it sitting on my north facing window sill. I believe I did over water it but should I do anything like trim off the yellow leaves or just let it go for a month and see if it bounces back?

another youtube guy that cares well for his plants. Where do you live?. The "usda hardness" matters. Plant people live in different zones. Otherwise, the advise may not work for us. Also, that is a nursery plant.

They have rhizomes…that store water. They’re built for drought.
