I haven't watered my zz plant for 3 months and it's still looking happy and healthy. Before bringing it indoors I left it outside under the deep shade of a tree and forgot about it for a year. It survived 40c temperatures without water and was still looking good. When I finally remembered it I decided that anything that can survive that treatment deserves to be repotted and brought indoors.
Lol a year gosh that's a tough plant. I'm in southern California and my zz plant loves being outside on my porch it belonged to a friend that passed away back in July. When my husband and I helped her kids clean out her apartment they said we can have something that was hers. Idk why I picked her zz plant but I'm glad I did my friend isn't alive anymore but her plant is 🥀
Surprisingly, I had 12 shoots in 3 weeks. I decided to blend some crushed eggs shells in the the blender. It became sandy, I mixed it with the soil, and since then the plant grows exponentially. I even think its over growing. It gets enough light outdoors, and I water once a week in West Africa.
@@lakeiaburgess2902 I just put back the eggshells back to the tray and place tray in the window when gets sun so they will get dry. When already full and dried, I use blender to crush them until became powder. I placed on top of my zz plant's soil/pot since I purchased last month, I got 2 shoots now I am surprised, maybe it is spring time too down here, but I think it has a lot of nutrients and good source of calcium, my African blue basil usually I can just cut easily the stems by hand, now I need scissors hehe
I think I originally found your channel a while back because of a zz video and you talked about taking it outside.. in spring and summer 2023 I got a ton of new shoots.. probably 9 too! I believe it’s because I gave it so much outdoor exposure during summer 2022!
My plant was outside in a very sunny spot, and I watered it almost every single day at that time because the soil was drying out so quickly on the daily… The front of my apartment is south facing, and it just gets beat up by the sun… I had to tuck the zz plant in the corner so it would limit the number of hours of sun and I also make sure to rotate it so one side wasn’t getting all of the attention! I did learn about this adjustment the hard way because I did get a few burn leaves unfortunately.
I put mine outside a month ago after watching this video and I already have 6 new shoots coming in! This was amazing to me because it was inside in medium light and had not grown at all for 2 years.
I recently got a ZZ plant in July. It had 3 shoots (stems). Two months later a new shoot appeared and grew pretty quickly with 14 leaves on it. That was exciting to see. Thanks for your video on ZZ plant care
everyone on the tube just says how indestructible this plant is and how infrequently you should water it. it’s great to have your info on complete plant care. i am very successful with plants that communicate, but ZZ is new to me and it keeps its counsel. thanks for filling in some gaps!!
Thank you, Nicole!! Your videos are always full of useful information, I appreciate you spending your time to help us enjoy our plants and learn new things.
Damn. All points are detailed helpful. I just got a month back and watering every three to four days. Now will wait. Humidity level also explained thoroughly. Thanks thanks. 🙏🙏
Thank for your video. I'm a new owner of a ZZ plant, bought it this spring and moved it indoors for winter and it seems to be thriving indoors and still growing. I love this plant !
I didn’t even know I needed a video like this because my ZZ plants are doing good, but yes I want them to do GREAT! Thank you. You are one of my favorite Plant friends you have GREAT advice. Thank you so much for this.....I bought one at our local nursery several months ago, in a 3" pot. I didn't know anything about a ZZ plant, had never heard of it. I just thought it was very interesting. It hasn't done much at all, no new growth. I'm so happy to have found this! I'm heading in now to give it a bit more care, focused care now. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Have a great day and remember to breathe.....
Perfect timing of this video. I just got my first zz plant couple days ago. Great tips on how to take care of them 👍 can't wait to see mine grow big and lush like yours. Keep up the good work 🙂😊
Hi I always watch your videos as they are amazing and very informative and interesting. U explained so well. I have two zz plant plants and so easy to look after. One of the beautiful plant
Usually in one pot there are several rhizomes- making several plants. To buy a large potted Zanzibar Gem is very expensive, and I discovered it was cheaper to buy a few smaller plants and pot them all together in one pot. I gently separated all the rhizome clumps from my small pots, and used potting mix with lots of perlite added. The perlite improves drainage. If you have a tendency of over-watering, I suggest when you pot up your Zanzibar Gem, to add perlite to the potting mix. These plants definitely put out more shoots when living in bright light. I also mist my plants, and in that add a tiny amount of liquid fertiliser.
Today I saw Zz plant but didn’t buy because of its dark purplish color rather than green. Now I am going to buy mainly because of your video. Thank you!
Thank you for the information about the ZZ plant. Mine have/has yellow leaves, so today I will repot and make certain that I try yo follow your suggestions
Thank you for your very informative video. I wish my zz looked like yours. Mine does not have shiny leaves . Very dull and very little growth. I split it about a year ago. Put the smaller one outside during summer. It has sprouted some new growth and the new growth is shiny. I will take advantage of your tips and hopefully my zz will look like yours one day.
Thanks Nicole. I like so much this plant, i bought it 6 month ago, it gave me others shoots, i water it once a week, i got some informations about watering on yutub, many channels about it. I readed just today something about eggs shell, they say it's good for all the plants.
Thankyou so much! I’ve been so confused why my zz is going yellow and dying. It’s in full afternoon sun. Moving it to another space now and hoping we get some growth!
My raven has 4 so far ( tiny ) I'm excited. She's outdoors for summer vacation. It'll probably be October when it's cool enough to bring it in. She's a mother's day present. She's very special to me.
Hi I was interested to see your post about Z Z plants. I wasn't sure what a Z Z plant was, and now I know. I have this plant growing in my garden and it is about 6 feet tall with many branches. Here in North Australia we know it as the Zanzibar Bush and grows very well. Because mine is a mature plant it doesn't need extra water, just relies on the rain. In fact I have to prune it often to keep it under control. I inherited this plant and am not that fond of it. But obviously many people are. Each to their own.
Hello Nicole. Love your video on ZZ Plant 🪴 it is so comprehensive and educational. I am a beginner gardener. I can see it is not a set and forget plant does require care for it to flourish. Thumbs up 👍 keep up the great work!

One thing I noticed, all the plant looked to be planted in a peat type soil. I didn’t see any signs of drainage! Also, no rain hole in the bottom of the pots either. Why would my zz plant’s new growth shoots dry out? This spring there were four new shoots. The first grew and opened, however the rest eventually just dried out. 😞
Hi Nicole, Thanks for the content, I was considering to get a new ZZ plant! BTW, I really enjoy listening to you saying "water", it sounds so cute. LOL

I got two ravens zz from Whole Foods too this summer (thanks to you and your YT channel!) And both got those yellow spots like yours, one was way worse than the other. I treated them both with neem oil, like they had a fungus, and both now look healthy like your healthy one. I'm inclined to think that the spots were a sign of a fungal issue or that the cold damage made them more susceptible to fungal infections.
I thought it might be fungus too but I reached out to costa farms anyways. I got a raven ZZ for my friend from Whole Foods too and hers also got so many yellow spots and most leaves have fall off. :(
I have a zz with yellow leaves. The roots aren’t rotten and the soil is dry so I guess I haven’t watered enough in this warm weather. Should I cut the yellow leaves off at the bottom of the stem? Tks
Hi Nicole. Thank you for the video. It's very helpful. I would love to watch more similar videos on your TH-cam channel. If possible I would like to request video about monstera deliciosa. Stay safe Nicole and I can't wait to see you in your next video.
Thank you Anna! I don’t think I will do a video on monstera deliciosa because I just gave mine away a month ago. 😣 It grew too fast and I have no room for it. Hi. I noticed that on leaves small yellowing spots and change the place from direct light into indirect light. The leaves will come back to original glories or not.
I live in a dark house. My ZZ is in a corner and it must be happy Its getting new shoots. I do try and move it into a higher light area in the room once a week. ZZ is my most easy plant 😊 Thank you for all the info on ZZ and a great video.
