Hearing his comment that there are more zz plants in pots in NY, than in its natural habitat made me sad...I do love to see old plants get a new home and fresh soil! Good job, guys! Those bowls are beautiful, and it’s so nice that the tree removal solution gives people jobs and inspires artisans! Alan does very important work. The discussion about the different types of woods was fascinating! 🌱🌱😀🌱

@@summerrayneoakes That would be wonderful. I'm a beginner plant owner. I've been on gardening forums for advice and it is frustrating. Many different strong opinions. Most pro growers on these sites would recommend planting in a gritty mix of turface, maybe chicken grit and pine bark fines of equal 3mm size. I like that you used soil from the bag, mixed with the old soil and the activator. I was expecting you to add pumice or perlite and make it more complicated. Great video.

    • @TicklishWombat
      @TicklishWombat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I started mine via leaf propagations (I took the leaves from a friend's plant, with her consent) 2 years ago. Each leaf made 1 sprout with 2 leaves each after about a year, and another sprout several months later with 4-6 leaves. It's still a really tiny plant, but a precious one, and I can't wait until it grows into a monster 🥰
(I think they grow faster when they're more established, they're quite slow when propagating from leaves, but what a cool trait for the plant to have, to be able to grow from leaves!)

I got mine in a 5 inch pot about a year ago in the middle of Indiana winter and it has definitely doubled in height to be about 2 feet tall. I keep mine in front of a southern window most of time time. It doesn't need that much light but I want it to get huge ASAP and it certainly doesn't hurt.

What I love about you is that you show, all plants have their own “personalities” in that they don’t look perfect all the time even with great care! You just let your plants grow how they want whether that be upside down, sideways, or whatever, whereas, I, try to stake mine up to no avail lol. My dad is constantly on my case to “fix” my giant 3ft desert cactus that I’ve grown from a tiny 2-3” height, because it is staked and STILL trying and succeeding to grow lopsided. Lol he thinks something is wrong with it but nope it’s a happy little cactus and putting out MORE arms to add to the 20-ish ones it already has. Gonna have to work out something to prop it up or restake it, which is a FEAT because the needles are half an inch long and very girth-y lol, because it is trying it’s best to lay down sideways haha

You can also increase the diversity of the microbes in the soil by spraying the leaves with some types of plant food. It sends carbohydrates from the leaves, down into the roots and feeds the microbes. I did this with one of my ZZ plant and it grew out of control so had to split it.

Did not know zz plants get that big!! :O my ZZ plant is small in comparison! May it grow large! 😁 But not too large 😂 unless I have a friend to help me :P
Love that the coconut trees are made into things rather than burnt! 😁 👍

I just purchased a mahogany tree from plantvine coincidently! Literally just rec’d it days ago but I don’t think it’s acclimating well. I love watching your videos! You have inspired me MORE than you can imagine !!! I am a huge fan of your work and I have learned so much from you!! If you ever do a video on specifically watering a deep planter (such as a mahogany or ficus Alii tree) and how to know when to water I will be sure to watch !!I know you’ve showcased your ficus Lyrata and I understand the basics. I’m an all or nothing kind of person in many ways and I understand letting certain plants dry out and then water thoroughly and I even can maintain my wandering dude moisture but tell me to water when soil is dry 1-2inches down??? Now this is where I struggle. Hence, my ficus Alii has seen better days ! Thanks for all that you do!!! Stay safe !!

I recently repotted my root-bound ZZ plant. Mine was severely stuck inside a metal watering can. To remove it, I poured water into the watering can and was able to gently tugggggg my plant to freedom.
The ZZ plant is my all time favorite plant. And the first houseplant I ever owned.
I really enjoyed this informative video! I always look forward to your videos. 😊☀️🌱

If everyone just planted one plant or tree in their lifetime, humans would thrive. Unfortunately housing boom is choking us. Beautiful video and excellent cause. Keep up the good work.

I just repotted my ZZ because my neighbour overwatered it while I was on vacation, and I didn't notice for a while. It was more angled than usual and I just thought it was trying to move towards the light, but turns out it was just becoming limp because it was soaking in water! Seeing how resilient yours was, I'm hopeful mine will make a full recovery.

Oh my goodness I just realized I have the same plant and it was just one branch when I planted it and later became too big for the pot so I had to repot it.The plant similarly had all its root entangled but I didnt untangle them instead cut through each and separated them into three different pots.I even gave some to my friends. It was a hell lot of work but the plant looks healthy. This plant just gives a blunt expression always looking the same no matter what happens.
Love all the way from Kerala,India

I got a ZZ in an 8 inch pot long ago. It got to the height and density of the subject plant in about six years in a fifteen inch pot. It had also been split to make two pots of that size.
After the third year it flowered every Spring, about a half-dozen inflorescences at a time.

I had an elephant ear plant that I needed to re-pot because it was root-bound. It was the most root-bound plant I've ever had but it is NOTHING compared to this beast! I can not believe the root system this plant has! Allan was awesome to have in the video

Kudos to you and your neighbor, Allan, for getting that monstrous zz plant out of the pot.. without breaking it! Those roots were crazy! Now you have five beautiful plants. I loved the information about the different woods, and the lovely pieces made. Happy July 4th! (a little early..lol) Thank you, Summer.

Ive been watching your vlog for sometimes now, what i like about you is that your content not only useful but your voice and you just go right into it as per your title. I appreciate that.
As for others, i have to skip like almost to the middle of the video to get the information that i need 😅

This is probably my favorite video of yours. Loved the conversation with Allan (about the ZZ plant and his other activities). Plus this helped me diagnosis a problem I was having with my (small) ZZ plant. The main clue that something was wrong was that it developed 2 yellow leaflets at which point I realized the plastic pot felt "lumpy." It turns out that it had less than 1 cup of soil in a 6 inch pt which was *packed* with thick roots.

Oh Summer, I needed this yesterday! I just re potted and separated a ZZ plant last night and it was a big job. Not quite as big as yours though. I didn’t separate the roots as much as you did and I think the pots I used are too small. I’ll go out now and get two larger pots and some of the soil enhancer you used and re pot. Fingers crossed they’ll be ok. Looking forward to meeting you at PlantShed later this month!

Shonda Bradford I would’ve untangled the roots more, but don’t mess with the plant even more. I’ve repotted a zz twice within 3 days and about a month later it died. The less you mess with a plant, the better.

Thank you so much for this video!! I bought my ZZ plant in 2017 and my bad I went away so my parents took care of it but they never change the pot. I was searching for it because it is a monster as well with many plants around 1m. Your video helped so much and I am going to do it this weekend! Have a good Easter day !

Just repotting my little zz while watching you and Allen. Like Allen I don’t like wasting any pots. It was a doozy wiggling that little sucker (pun succulent) out of her old 4”. Lol. She’s good now.
