This is, by far, the best video on ZZ propagation that I've seen, and I watched quite a few. I'd be surprised if anyone has any questions....don't think you missed anything 😊. I propagated leaves from a stem that broke off (hence the search last year on what to do with it). I had about a dozen leaves, plopped them in water and five survived. But I didn't know I could have left them in after they rotted and the rhizome still may have formed. I did throw those out. I wish I had kept a time frame but I have nice green shoots growing now from those I planted. It took four or five months after planting but then all of a sudden they just took off. The original leaves are still there and still nice and green. Don't know what function they are serving but they haven't died off yet. And you are right about the odd/no growth pattern.....I have several pots of ZZs and they are all sprouting new shoots in January and February here in freezing Chicago. To make a long story even longer, after watching your video, I'm inspired to chop a stem or two. This is such a long process but so satisfying to succeed!
Wow! Thanks so much for this and I'm so sorry for the late reply. It is getting hard to keep up with the comments, but I am trying to respond to everyone.
I had a raven single stem and rooted it for n water at least a three years ago. Just realised today it has grown a big potato sized rhizome filling the pot and six little shoots under the surface 😮 Patience really has finally paid off.
El mío lleva siete meses y solo tiene una raicitas y una patatita muy chica ; nada de brote ,,,pues anda qe tres años se le va a uno la vida esperando a tener una planta 😢😢
I had a rescue plant from my building and I found one of these rhizomes in the soil of a different kind of plant. I had no idea what it was, so I planted it in a small Tera cotta pot and months later it finally started to grow, it took a while and I only recently figured out it was one of these zz plants. So glad I took my time With the little random potato I found in that plant. Too little to propagate but nice to know I can. Thanks for the demo
Ha! I think I beat you to it this time 😉 After almost 6months of waiting for my zz stem to root, last week, I decided to toss it out, only to find it had grown a massive rhizome and two shoots. Caring for plants is taking a lesson in patience, and this one really tested me!

Thank you so much for this video, and I really appreciate the comments, too. I have been wanting a Raven ZZ for a long time, but could not justify the price. I received a 2 leaf cutting when I purchased another plant and put it in water. It rooted in 2 months, and I potted it up in a mix of 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 Jack's Gritty Mix in a 2" terra cotta pot. Then........nothing. The 2 leaves have shriveled, but they are still there. I was about to chuck it. Thanks to this video and all of the comments, I will be patient and see what happens. Thank you!
So glad I found this video! Earlier in the day I found out about 3 of my Raven ZZs Rhizomes were complete mush and so I repotted in new soil... BUT I almost threw away a bunch of plant that I'm now going to try and propagate. Excited to see what'll happen. Thanks! 🎉 Cheers from 🇨🇦
I LOVE THIS VIDEO! A couple of months ago a stem came out of the soil. I just put it into water not knowing anything. Roots grew and I replaced it. All is well 😍. I have 5 new stems coming as well. It did nothing over the Summer and now a huge growth spurt.🤩😍. Thank you again 💞
Just came across this. My ZZ plants have much thicker stems. They are quite large. I always get my new growth in the winter. I have propagated stem cuttings in water. Usually takes about 2-3 months. I’ve never tried leaf cuttings though. I’m anxious to give that a try.
My favorite! My large green ZZ I’ve had for a few years will need repotting in the spring. It was a nice medium size when I bought it and seemed easy and happy however I had a lot of dark sort of purplish spotting on the large stems, possibly from too much light??? I moved it from NE to NW corner window and then I noticed a couple smaller branches turned yellow. I only water about once a month so IDK…I left it alone and now I see 2 new baby shoots coming 💚 Oops make that 3 👍I water once a month on the first so it’s almost time 🤞MY Raven I purchased on 2/15/20 at HDepot a Costa farm plant planted in what looked like pure peat moss. I resisted the urge to repot until late this past summer and gave it some new soil and a terracotta pot. So far nothing is happening except for a tiny stem broke off that I put in water. I think the growth habit is slow just like the propagation. Funny thing is somehow I ended up with a tiny bulb and I wasn’t even sure what it was but I put it in a 2” pot and I think it’s a tiny green zz. I loved this video I’ll watch it again.
Perfect timing, as a friend is giving me a ZZ cutting this week. She will be trimming her overgrown plant and planned to throw the branch away! Noooo! I will rescue it and experiment with the cuttings.
@@EverythingPlants So the zz cutting my friend gave me turned out to be a very young stalk, not fully grown, as I thought. It is about 12 inches long, but very young and tender. Do you think I can propagate it? I have it in water for now. I had wanted to do stem or leave cuttings but am hesitant because it is not fully developed. Any advice?
Brilliant thoughtful instruction. Am about to propagate my raven I bought a few months and was looking for someone who the hadperfect amount of experience and know how to help me do it. Thanks so much.
This is EXACTLY the video I needed! Thank you so much! I have had a ZZ failing all summer, I had repotted it in June, but I believe now, after watching your tutorial that I planted the rhizomes too deeply into the pot. I already have a green ZZ plant and a black raven I just purchased a 2 leaf cutting of a variegated ZZ plant and I'm glad that I stumbled on this video very detailed lots of information because I didn't know what to expect When I put The leaf cutting in water Thank you For uploading this video😁💗
Thank you for the information, I was just about to give up on my ZZ leaves I am propagating! Then when I watched this I realized how long it takes and decided not to quit, and just the other day i noticed some tiny rhizomes!! So thank you!!
Ya....they take forever. I just made a raven ZZ video a couple weeks ago and in that video I said I will probably never propagate these again because of how long it takes hahaha 🤣
Such an awesome vid, I got my raven zz about 1.5 years ago, and I think it's time I propagate it for more plants. Great explanations that I needed as a novice to gardening and the like. Appreciate it much!! Very informative!! I may try both ways :) Thank you!!!
@@EverythingPlants It was this video lol, but it's okay, I have patience. :) I would only like to be aware of what each stage looks like to make sure I didn't destroy 🤣 it.
Thanks for the video! I did propagate my ZZ using the leaves in water. Fingers crossed. This was the propagation that I added the pothos start to, to help the growth!
My raven ZZ was pretty much doing the same.. I had brought in a stray cat and he liked to pee and poop in my plants , tear them apart and smack the pots on the ground.. needless to say he’s gone.. I thought my ZZ may have suffered too much damage he damaged more than 80 percent of the leaves but I just recently put her in a south facing window and she’s growing a new shoot after about 2 months
Thanks for your video! Just wondering if the roots and rhizomes developed quicker propagating from the leaf vs the stem? In your opinion was one method better than the other?
I have five variegated ZZ cuttings and man, the process is killing me. I was very ambitious. They're about a year old now and at this point I very much feel like spending a few hundred on a full plant would have been more fulfilling 🤣 I've actually considered selling them since they're fully rooted. I love Ravens and luckily they're dirt cheap now, I just picked up another one for my office.
Just a picky bit of terminology here--there are no stems on a ZZ Plant (other than underground rhizomes). The first cutting you show in the video is actually a leaf. The others you call "single leaves" are leaflets--think of a compound leaf, like on an ash tree. OK, the pedant will shut up now. ;)
Last year about this time I purchased a leaflet cutting of a variegated ZZ. It had a rhizome and a small number of roots--in short very much like those in your video here. Just this week, I see it's finally putting up a new leaf. I'm both overjoyed to get growth and relieved I haven't killed it. A year seems like a long time for a cutting already rooted when I got it and I just wondered what your experience is with respect to timing. (When I bought it, the seller gave me a four-leaflet Raven ZZ leaf cutting as a nice little premium and while it looks fine, it has yet to actually do anything, at least above ground.)
I fully expect this plant to take a long time before I see any growth as well. This is my first time propagation the ZZ plant. Another friend of mine mentioned they had a one stem cutting of a raven ZZ and it hasn't done anything in a year. And then you have plants like the pothos that root and sometimes get new growth points in a matter of weeks. Haha
Thanks for the video. I had a ZZ plant on my porch during the summer that was knocked over during a storm. I repotted it in a pons mixture and it’s doing well. But I notice you mentioned the rhizome should be just under medium. But I know I put the plant in about the half point of the pot. Does it matter? Also I put in water some of the stems that didn’t survive the fall. And like you said it took forever for the roots to grow. Wish I could add a pic but I’m not that savvy with You tube. Thanks again
You mean you placed it deeper in the pot? I should be just fine...I wouldn't worry at all. If you want to send a picture and have Instagram then feel free to send one to my IG account.
lol I just read a subreddit where it said "propagation of ZZ raven is prohibited" pffft....plants grow freely in nature. I dont care if people think they created new types of plants etc...Nobody owns nature! Great video as always. ZZ is on my wishlist. Its not a hard plant to find, Im just on a "no buy" right now. :)
Watching this because some stem cuttings I started in soil started to rot. I'm going to cut them up and put them in water I think. I have two other surviving stem cuttings and this is what I've noticed: The one I put in water right away has the longest roots/the most roots. The one (surviving) stem in soil has veeeery short roots BUT already has a rhizome forming! And you are right about these being slow! It's been two months and I've only started to see this growth now. Can't wait to see what happens to them in a few more months :)
I started with a dozen leaves. One of them did exceptionally well and now that leaf seems part of the new plant with multiple new growth. Several other leaves had rhizomes but then died. My question is -- if I plant the rhizomes without the leaf, do they still have a chance? Thank you.
Now that you mostly propagate in perlite have you tried some zz plants? I propagated a zz in water and unfortunately it turned yellow and looked dead before any substantial root growth. And that was after several months in water. I might have needed to give them brighter light. But anyways. Wondering if your love of perlite propagation has translated to zz’s since this video though. Just got a raven cutting and want to do it right.
Hey Eric....I don't see why it wouldn't work and I would definitely give it a try myself.....but.... I will probably never propagate a ZZ plant again. The time it takes to root and get new growth is astounding lol I know it's probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but they do take a long time. If you do try it then please keep me posted with your results and maybe, just maybe I'll try it again. I wonder what type of time frame growers like costa farms has with ZZ plant growth...
Well I have an update quicker than I though, I was given one full zz raven stem that I then cut into 3 pieces. The base of the stem has produced a small rhizome and 1” long roots! Maybe 4 individual roots. The middle section of stem has about half inch roots, and the top cut of the stem that’s pretty thin has just barely started to produce roots. They’ve actually only been in perlite for 6 weeks or so. I’ll probably leave them there over the winter and just plant them when things start to grow again. God knows how long it will be until there’s new growth though.
So do you leave them to callous for a day or stick directly in water? I think you said the stalk went directly in, but the leaves were left to callous? Just making sure...ty!
I've done both methods with many different types of plants and I've never seen a difference between letting them callous over or not. You could leave them out for like an hour or two and then stick them in just to be safe
I've wanted a zz plant for a long time and finally got one with a jade plant . the zz plant looks awesome even has some new growth poking through but the jade is dropping leaves left and right! I've been binging your videos to learn how to care for them. One question, I read zz plants are poisonous to touch so I have it high up away from my kids and dog and only wear gloves to touch it. but I see you can touch your just fine? Does it not make you itchy or give you a rash? Still keeping away from kids but I don't want to grab some gloves every time I need to touch my new Lil zz!
They are toxic when ingested. In fact most houseplants have varying levels of toxicity. Someone plants like dieffenbachia can irritate the skin if the sap is touched.
Learned with raven ZZs props that they get way better root growth results in singular vessels like shot glasses. Their little alien arms like having room to grow :)
I have an old Zz plant with most leaves fallen off, only 3 stems are left with a big ball clump at the base. I will make cutting of the 3 long stems and see how it grows. Can I replant the big rhizome ball ? Will it revive as well?
When I’m taking them out of the water and putting them in dirt, can I use the rooting powder to help them along and where do I put them after they’re in the dirt sunny location, shade?
I don't think it would hurt but it's not needed (unless you have some) I always put them in bright light...typically the spot you'll have them growing in once they sprout
Hi I bought a zz plant a like 6 weeks ago O just now got around to reporting it, The risomes where rotted the plant was pot bound, it was wet when I got it it dried out really quick, I do not know if It ws rotted when I got it. My question can you cut off the rotten risome and just plant it or can you just cut off part of the mushy part and keep the healthy part of the risome and plant it?
I have a long stemmed cutting in water that is ready to transplant. Should I cut it down before I plant it? I"m worried it won't root into the soil and topple over.
@@EverythingPlants YES... ITS Good That YOU Focused On Being Patient With Your Plants...THEY Can Really Reward You For Your Patience!!! #ThankGodForPlants!!!
my ZZ stem in water for 3 months now and nothing, I start to lose patience lol. I went to Lowe's CanadaOntario, and to my surprise there is baltic blue potho in stock already, but I did not get it 😊(not blue enough to my liking and it looks a lot bigger plant than Cebu blue it will be too).
It will take a very long time. Honestly its better off buying a full plant then propagating them. Now if you want to try for yourself then that's awesome, but it takes a long time lol
What happened with the single rhizome that was planted? The one where the leaf died and only the rhizome was planted? Did it send out a shoot? I have a ZZ that got root rot so I took the viable stems and propagated them in water but now I realized that's it's super leggy due to not enough sunlight and wish I would've cut them down further but it's already rooted so I was thinking of just planting the rhizome of one where the leaves on the cutting are starting to turn yellow. My concern is that it will succumb to root rot again and then I will loose the whole cutting.
Hey Shirley. That's the interesting thing about certain plants...some grow from leaves and others only from stems. If you root a single leaf it may grow roots, but unfortunately it will not grow a new stem/plant. It will only remain as that single leaf.
@@EverythingPlants Sorry, typo- can I cut off the end where the root rot is and put directly into new soil? The rhizome was mushy so I cleaned off the roots with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution, but one long stem was left not attached to the other rhizome bunch. Can I just cut off that end to grow in a separate container?
So I know this is an older video but I should have watched this before propagating my ZZ plant as I did not allow the leaf cuttings to callus over night. I just put some in water and others in soil. I’m guessing nothing will happen now??😩
Hello - thanks so much for the VERY informative video - quick question, after you take the cuttings and put them in water, what type of light did you keep them in, and is there any type of light you should avoid, e.g. full sun, etc.
Mine were in bright light...like 2-3 ft from my south window but no direct light. They were surrounded by other plants....I'm sure a bit of morning direct light would be okay.
I rescued my ZZ from a house being evicted and everything thrown out. a couple of the stems are wrinkled though and starting to droop. Can I propagate from these or would you say leaf-cutting be best? The leaves are starting to yellow but I think only because not getting as much light anymore
The leaves on my ZZ are shinny and green, but at their base where they meet the stem there is a hard brown crust. Is this and infestation or disease? How should I treat it? Thank you.
Were the single leaf and little stem/leaf cuttings all started at the same time? If so, I find it interesting that the single leaves did more rooting vs the leaf/stem cuttings that made the rhizomes! How long did it take for the leaves to get that amount of roots?
I actually forgot to mention this in the video, but the leaves were actually started a couple weeks before the stem cuttings. It took a couple long months 🤣 I've been waiting for some decent results before showing the video.
This is, by far, the best video on ZZ propagation that I've seen, and I watched quite a few. I'd be surprised if anyone has any questions....don't think you missed anything 😊.

Do you prefer soil leaf propagation vs water leaf propagation?
it probably took over a year for my stem cuttings to do anything after I potted them up in soil. hope it's faster for you!
Well that's not what I was hoping to hear 🤣 thanks!
I think certain companies own patents to certain varieties of plants....this is to prevent people from propagating and profiting from this.
@@EverythingPlants understood. I still think its lame lol. Putting a patent on nature? Nah
Watching this because some stem cuttings I started in soil started to rot. I'm going to cut them up and put them in water I think.
I have two other surviving stem cuttings and this is what I've noticed:
The one I put in water right away has the longest roots/the most roots.
The one (surviving) stem in soil has veeeery short roots BUT already has a rhizome forming!
And you are right about these being slow! It's been two months and I've only started to see this growth now. Can't wait to see what happens to them in a few more months :)
This is super interesting...thanks for sharing this!!!
Very interesting that the leaf cuttings rooted so much more than the stem cuttings.
I forgot to mention in the video the leaf ones were started first and have been in water about 2 weeks longer if I remember correctly
Thank you so much for the shout out!❤🌿Your ZZ plants are adorable! Great video as always!🌱🌱🌱
Thanks for watching!
I started with a dozen leaves. One of them did exceptionally well and now that leaf seems part of the new plant with multiple new growth. Several other leaves had rhizomes but then died. My question is -- if I plant the rhizomes without the leaf, do they still have a chance? Thank you.
Yes they can still grow
I’m really excited to see how this turns out!
I'll let you know in about a year's time 🤣
So do you leave them to callous for a day or stick directly in water? I think you said the stalk went directly in, but the leaves were left to callous? Just making sure...ty!
I've done both methods with many different types of plants and I've never seen a difference between letting them callous over or not. You could leave them out for like an hour or two and then stick them in just to be safe
What type of bulbs are you using inside those 2 black 'hood' lamps? && What wattage do you prefer when using them for grow lights?
They are Feit full spectrum grow bulbs 💡
Wow! So nice , how many month you put in water to have potato your zz?
@@EverythingPlants Thank you!! You put my mind at ease.
What happened to the rhizome without leaves?
I just placed them in soil and one popped up through the soil
Hi! Thank you for this video, very educational! Have you tried adding fertilizer into the water while growing the stem? Or would that be bad
Hey gabija. I have tried some experiments with fertilizer and the best is fish tank water for water propagation
This was awesome and super helpful
I'm so glad!
I don't think it would hurt but it's not needed (unless you have some)
I always put them in bright light...typically the spot you'll have them growing in once they sprout
@@EverythingPlants thank you so very much. I love your videos keep them coming.
I look forward to seeing this new pot in a few months.
Me too! I sure hope it goes haha
Lol 😂 😊✏️. You rock and so do your plants. Take care.
Hahaha...thanks!
WOW... I DIDN"T Know ZZs Could Be Propagated Like That... Gotta Try THIS With My ZZ OG!!!
It's awesome, but does take quite awhile 🤣
@@EverythingPlants YES... ITS Good That YOU Focused On Being Patient With Your Plants...THEY Can Really Reward You For Your Patience!!! #ThankGodForPlants!!!
This looks so beautiful!
Thanks!!!
Can u put the newly rooted into the same mother pot?
my ZZ stem in water for 3 months now and nothing, I start to lose patience lol. I went to Lowe's CanadaOntario, and to my surprise there is baltic blue potho in stock already, but I did not get it 😊(not blue enough to my liking and it looks a lot bigger plant than Cebu blue it will be too).
Zz propagation takes a very long time. I would have ditched mine a long time ago, but I wanted to make this video to show how long it does take.
@@EverythingPlantsMiraculously, my ZZ raven has a few tiny roots now. Yes I know
I have planted both leaf and stem cutting, they have grown roots but I there is no new leaf or stem as such, what can I do to promote new growth?
They have to grow a little potato rhizome and eventually it'll push out new growth...... It just takes a very long time
I love your videos, so cute! love love love
Thanks so so much!!!
Great video, thanks for all your information. You've got a subscriber 😊
Awesome and welcome!!!
Did the propagations ever put out new shoots?
I parted them up in my large pot of ZZ plants and I think two very small stems sprouted up
Once the leaves root and are replanted will they grow as tall as a zz plant?
It will take a very long time. Honestly its better off buying a full plant then propagating them. Now if you want to try for yourself then that's awesome, but it takes a long time lol
@@EverythingPlants thank you!
Have you done the leaf method with hoyas? Do they ever grow into a plant? Just asking.
Hey Shirley. That's the interesting thing about certain plants...some grow from leaves and others only from stems. If you root a single leaf it may grow roots, but unfortunately it will not grow a new stem/plant. It will only remain as that single leaf.
Can I cut off the bed of the root rot and directly transplant to succulent soil?
Sorry...I'm not understanding. Which part do you want to cut off?
@@EverythingPlants Sorry, typo- can I cut off the end where the root rot is and put directly into new soil? The rhizome was mushy so I cleaned off the roots with a hydrogen peroxide and water solution, but one long stem was left not attached to the other rhizome bunch. Can I just cut off that end to grow in a separate container?
Great video I'm going to go snip mine now.
Good luck. It takes a long time, but it is still fun.
How did they end up growing? From stem or the rizum? I know I butchered that, I'm new at propergation.
Can you cut the leaf horizontal on the zzplant when
Did you put any fertilizer into the water? 🤔
Nope...just plain old water
How long before you plant them in soil?
So I know this is an older video but I should have watched this before propagating my ZZ plant as I did not allow the leaf cuttings to callus over night. I just put some in water and others in soil. I’m guessing nothing will happen now??😩
I'm sure it will be just fine.
@@EverythingPlants Thank you!
I rescued my ZZ from a house being evicted and everything thrown out. a couple of the stems are wrinkled though and starting to droop. Can I propagate from these or would you say leaf-cutting be best? The leaves are starting to yellow but I think only because not getting as much light anymore
I would only propagate a healthy stem, but you can definitely try
It seems healthy toward the top... Is it wrinkly because it's maybe old? It's bigger than the one you have on the video
The leaves on my ZZ are shinny and green, but at their base where they meet the stem there is a hard brown crust. Is this and infestation or disease? How should I treat it? Thank you.
Interesting. I didn’t know anything about the ZZ plant.
Have you ever tried to propagate via Sphagnum moss ?
With a ZZ plant....no I haven't. I do have a small moss prop box with other plants in there. I will be uploading a prop box video soon
Okay cool I will watch it for sure !
How long did it take before the rhizomes started to show?
Can you use a rooting hormone on the ZZ?
Yes and I'm pretty sure you can on any plant (I think lol)
When doing leaf cuttings, if you want/need a portion of the stem, why not just cut each with a small chunk of stem, similar to pothos or philodendron?
You definitely could, but I just wanted to try both methods.
This is dangerous.
We’re going to have about 50 plants from one.
I have had a cutting in a pot for at least a year now and it has roots but no new growth yet.
Probably see some growth in the spring time....hopefully! Keep me posted.
Hi , do you know where i can buy seeds ? Looking for the black raven zz seeds? Or chameleon seeds? Lmk thx
No I'm not sure....I've never seen them around here
Ok Jeff indulge us for the holidays! Santa hats on the puppers
That's a pretty good idea haha
How much light it would need after shifting from water to soil?
Right now I kept my container with zz cutting in my restroom and I see the roots.
Everytime I try and propagate the stem goes black. Is my tap water to harsh?
Were the single leaf and little stem/leaf cuttings all started at the same time? If so, I find it interesting that the single leaves did more rooting vs the leaf/stem cuttings that made the rhizomes! How long did it take for the leaves to get that amount of roots?
I actually forgot to mention this in the video, but the leaves were actually started a couple weeks before the stem cuttings. It took a couple long months 🤣 I've been waiting for some decent results before showing the video.
Hello, Your videos are always so informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
You are welcome and thanks for watching.....I learn as I go!
Can a mulberry leaf be rooted and grow a tree?
Starting from leaves takes forever, stem cuttings produce growth so much faster.
Yes...yes it does lol
Fascinating!
Thanks Kabreon!
I wanna do this right now !
We'll get to it!!! Lol good luck friend!
Thanks for this tutorial
