  • Let's do some Turkish spindle plying and winding to make a 2-ply yarn. I will show you how to remove your turtle, start your ply, know if your yarn is balanced (and what to do if it's not), and finally how to wind onto your Turkish spindle so your yarn stays organized and beautiful! Watch to the end of the video to see a surprise guest!

    Thank you for all your videos!!! I’m new to spinning and fiber arts and you have become my goto for videos and knowledge! Your videos have been most valuable in my journey thus far and you make it easy to understand with the terms and different techniques. I have an EEW Nano 2, a Good and Basic (3d Printed wheel) and I just ordered an Ashford Kiwi 3 so much to learn but looking forward to it, never too old to learn (I’m a 60 yr old male computer nerd). 😊

    So I had questions about Turkish spindle spinning, 1/2 hitch looping, plying, turtle winding and spin control. You nailed them all in one video. Outstanding!

    Funny thing. I came across this and some of your other videos while looking for ways to efficiently reverse wrap some linen fibers I'm growing in my back yard garden. My interest is in creating primitive cordage for fire-by-friction bow drills. LOL! The 2-ply method you show here is just what I was hoping to learn! Perhaps I could double that again and again for 4, 8, etc. plys. I need something pretty strong. Anyhow, it's funny how an interest in one primitive art can open up opportunities and interests in other areas. I'm off to buy my first Turkish Spindle now! I'm excited to see where my spinning takes me.
    You are a lovely person with a sweet voice. I've enjoyed your well made videos immensely. Liked and subscribed!!

      Thank you so much! Yes, string is the foundation of all the things! As to your plying question, you can create a two ply yarn with extra twist and then ply it again. It is a great way to make strong cords. I've also done that method folded over again into an 8 stranded cable yarn for candle wicks using hemp so I'm sure it would also work for flax. Next summer I plan to grow a patch of flax in my back yard so maybe you can give me some tips when the time comes! Happy spinning! 💜🧶

    My boyfriend brought me a big bang of raw fleece, for a project. But it was too much, and I got interested in spinning. That's how I found this channel and the 🐢. I prepared the wool and started spinning with a Turkish spindel.
    Today I plyed my first 'turtle', with your help. My fibre was a bit oneven, cause it was my first cob. As I was, plying, my yarn was overtwisted. You gave the tip to give it more length, bit my arm wasn't long enough 🤣. My solution: I let the spindle hang and it unwinded by itself. Then I did the twist-test, until the yarn was the same as you showed.
    The first 32 gramms of hand washed, hand carded, hand spun wool is ready!
    Thank you so much for your video's! 😍😍❤️

    Excellent video! I am waiting for my Turkish spindle to be delivered, I havent tried it yet but I love the idea of taking it apart and it just being a ready made center pull ball :D I starting on a drop spindle in December last year, loved it and then bought a wheel. Addicted to spinning :D

    Hi! I have just gotten a Turkish spindle for when I am moving around.
    How would you suggest washing/soaking/setting the yarn? Keeping it in the turtle or is there something else I should do?

    Hi thanks for the video. I just finished my first turtle 🐢! But when I took off it loosened up on the inside. I am spinning another but what I am wondering is the tension still there. When you remove the arms. I don’t want the yarn to break.

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be fine. It has the twist in it already so it shouldn't fall apart. Happy spinning! 😊💜

    Are there other steps after plying? In one video you mention “thewraping”.

    Do you let the cop rest for a while on the spindle before removing it and then plying? Or can I rest if off the spindle so I can spin more?

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find it tangles less if it rests a bit, but it isn't 100% necessary.

    I have a Turkish spindle. It has a hook on the top. Do you make a half hitch knot on that?

    • @JillianEve
      @JillianEve  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, just wrap the yarn around the hook and you are set to spin! 🧶💜
