I made a Turk spindle out of four popsicle sticks that I drilled holes into using only my hunting knife. I cut and glued them so they could fit together and then I stuck a chopstick through the holes. Cost me only a few hour's effort!

Thank you for this tutorial! I have just started on a spinning wheel and was so attracted to especially the turkish spindle but also watched other videos for other spindles and it just did not feel right the method where you wind it up and then put it between your knees. It almost felt like a part of me could remember something else, another way of doing this and your video showed me exactly what I was after. Thank you! now I just have to go spindle hunting. Hey Jillian, I've stumbled across a little trick with spinning/plying on the Turkish: instead of holding the shaft between thumb and index finger to flick, I hold the yarn between first and middle fingers, and flick it with these two fingers and thumb. I think this is not only more comfortable to hold, but seems more stable and reduces wobble as the spindle spins.

Thanks so much for the video! I just started spinning on a high whorl drop spindle (and loving the process) but was interested in trying other spindle types so I 3D printed a turkish drop spindle then had no idea how to use it so this tutorial saved me! I'm finding it so much easier to see how my yarn is changing every few inches which will hopefully help me with consistent spinning... I already have a second spindle on the printer - the first one is only 20g and I'm finding that it doesn't spin for very long so I'm printing one that should be 40g. Again thanks for the video, all your tutorials are great!
How you wind the spun yarn onto the Turkish spindle reminds me of making something that we call the God's eye when I was in elementary school. I even went out and then back in just a little bit and called it a picture frame.
i went to the local yarn store today and got a very infusicastic sales pitch about these from one of the ladies in a knitting cirlcle there. it was a bit out of my price range but i'm glad to know more

Love your videos! Finn skeins are beautiful:) Turtles my fav for center pull - it' doesn't have "twisty mystery " you referred to previously , nice to have a little basket of them ready to go , they stay nicely wound A nostepine works really well also (Etsy) cobweb lace spindle spinners use them commonly . Can be very plain or elaborate. Lots of antiques with great histories and romantic tales - fun stuff!

Ankara Turkey though china is the place that breeds most of the angoras now days for world supply

I always spin off the thumb rather than into the palm. I just switch hands for singles and plying.
Question when do you Know your spindle is full?
When it slows down and gets annoying to spin, I consider it full. 🧶🐑✨

Yes! The spindle is 6" tall, 4" across the arms, and 1.2 oz. It is a lovely little spindle!

Start slow and scoot it in place with your fingernail so they all line up in order. It gets faster with practice! 💕
So you still need to put the yarn on a niddy noddy to make a skein and wash it to 'set the twist' when you are done?
I usually wash my yarn when I finish. It settles the twist and restores the crimp to the fiber. A lot of yarn is stretched out and "flat" when it comes off a spindle and washing it gives it back the bounce and loft. Happy spinning!
Slightly off topic but when you are plying and get to the end of the turtle do you cut the ends or leave the “loop”?

I have tried, but my TS after very few twists turns the other way....therefore un-swisting everything. what do I do wrong I use merino roving.

When I use a spindle with a half hitch or a hook on top, it doesn't matter as much. It i wound the other way on a supported spindle I would have a mess! 🎃

I'm not sure I understand why you make 2 layers? Why is it necessary to first wind 1 over/1 under, then after a bit wind 2 over/1 under?

I'm pretty sure it's always 2 over and one under. That is what makes the pattern and balanced ball of yarn.
I just watched the live today aug 8th 2022 and I asked a question and mark directed me to this video (great video) but it did not address my question. I was wondering why when I am finished a single on my Turkish spindle and I do wrap it the same way eve does. When when I take it off the spindle and arms out. Dose it not stay together it curls up at time. I think it might be because of the amount of twist. 9more twist causing it to curl up?) aside from less twist (cuz sometime more is needed) is there anything I can do to keep it from curling up and tangling? I currently wind it off the turtle (arms still though the turtle) onto a bobbin until I’m ready to ply it then I ply it from a lazy Kate. Is there a better way ? Thanks for your time 🧶Nikkieknits 🧶
Yep, you are onto it. It's your amount of twist. Try letting it rest and relax a few days before taking it off the spindle. 😊
Does it matter what direction you twist the leader on the upper part of the arm of the spindle before you put on the half-hitch?
I usually wind the same direction I spin but it doesn't really matter. Sometimes I switch it up to give my hand a break. 🧶💕
@@JillianEve I think I was not clear. I'm talking about the winding that goes up the arm and ends in the half hitch at the top of the arm. Not the winding on of the turtle. I see some people don't wind up the arm, but it goes straight to the half hitch. Hope that makes sense.

I can't understand, I load everything u[, give the twist. The spindle makes a few clockwise rotations and then turns the other way as soon as I let it loose. Can anyone help me?
I've been spinning on my turkish spindles for about eight months now and I've noticed that mine don't really raise up high, they just creep down the arms and get wider. Also when going under the arms should I make sure the thread lays right next to the previous one?
I lay mine next to each other to keep it organized and pretty. You can make layers to make it go taller. Just start another layer by bringing the yarn right up to the shaft and laying it out again.
@@JillianEve I do that as well, I just see people with these really tall Turtles and mine's just growing wider not taller. Maybe I need to make my layers shorter and stack them more? I don't know, the Turkish spindle has been a really fun toy to play with, I have now bought 5 3D printed ones and I've got my eye on two more in Walnut.

Not that I know of. I think she is keeping it very local.

How can you draft like that? I have been trying to draft, and no matter what I do, however thin I make the floof, it never drafts like that. It either breaks apart after only a few centimeters of pulling or just becomes hard and unweilding. I've made sure the twist isn't entering the drafting area, and pre drafted. Franky, I'm at the point of giving up. I've tried to find youtube videos about drafting, but none, not even yours, explains how to properly pre draft, and prepare floof for spinning. All the videos just show large floofs being easily drafted. Which is just not happening here.
