Y'all might not believe this but i have a 2011 equinox 2.4 with 200k on it and i changed the timing chain, water pump and water pump chain, guides, gears, front seal, and everything else you can think of on the front end of the engine while it was open lol. (I will say this, if you didn't change the water pump just for giggles while you had the front of the engine off, then you might wanna rethink that the next time, that's a 40 dollar water pump that a mechanic will charge 3 grand to change it, cause the easiest way to change it is pull the cylinder head off, lol.) We put 102k miles on top of the original 98k and luckily i had to change the valve cover gasket and saw the timing chain loose as a goose, and found pieces of the guides all in the upper engine but by God's grace it didn't damage the engine. So guess what I'm doing this weekend, lol, so I'm watching these videos to get a lil refresher making a list of the parts i need other than the timing chain, the guides, gaskets, etc....
its pretty easy to work on engine tho. But definitely must have water pump replacement once youre there 100%. I also replaced those junky stretchy bolts to 8 grade timing component bolts from local hardware store. It was just keep stretching when applying proper torque using torque wrench
couldn't believe the timing chain outlasted the valve cover on that thing. absolutely insane. but at least I know now what that slapping sound is on my equinox. looking forward to digging in and fixing it
I put an oil catch can on mine to catch all that stuff, I hardly have any moisture at all in the summer, but when it gets cold I have to check it weekly and when I empty it, it has a bad smell and it can actually be lit and burn, these engines are set to fail it seems
@@BustedtoBuilt Liability? What can they be held liable for? Do you just mean if the new timing chain fails soon after/within a certain time frame of being replaced & causes a blown engine &/or other damage, they'd have to cover it? My daughter has a 2012 that had the whole frozen PCV valve or w/e & had a 'new'(?) engine put in just 2 months short of 2 years ago. Fast forward to a month ago & . . . . her timing chain is bad. Chevy dealer said sorry, prior repair & parts not still under any warranty. She bought something else & is going to try to sell the Equinox as is. If anyone wants to buy one like this, we're in west central IL lol.
I have to replace the timing in my equinox for the 3rd time 🤦♀️ first time at 120k miles, then 148k and now again at 173k. Eats a quart of oil a week and I'm ready to junk it lol
I had my timing chain replaced twice while the car was under warranty and it just started giving me problems again. It definitely needs to be replaced. Again. No warranty this time. I’ve also noticed my oil changes don’t seem to be lasting as long, either. I’m so frustrated. Still owe 7k. I can’t wait to pay it off and get rid of it…😭
great images of the damage and repair. I have the same one to start this next fall or winter. I will keep it parked until then. I dont work on jack in the summer of AZ. Mine only has 79K
Cloyes is probably going to the only timing kit available in the aftermarket and should be available thru any auto parts. If you want to go oem parts anywhere online or right thru the dealer. I typically use the cloyes kit but the internet is pretty quick to critique non oem parts so you are sure to get mixed answers but I'm happy with their products
2014 Equinox. Mine consumes oil like crazy. It's almost like there's a leak. I have to stay stocked on oil. How does an issue like this get through engineering?
Should a timing chain on these have movement? Mine has absolutely no wiggle to it at all. But I'm struggling with getting the timing cover off because I need to reset the balance shaft tensioner after a water pump change. Did have a problem with it running low on oil as well. Don't know what all I need to do to fix this, but there's a lot wrong with mine sadly.
Have you done a video on the rear main seal replacement? That happened to us, I’m going to change it, but I figured I’d do the timing chain and vvt while I’m in there. No idea how to do any of it. It’s like an adventure
I have not done a video on the rear main, but I would agree would be a good time to tackle the chains as well. Will definitely be an adventure! Thanks for watching!
Most people end up dropping the subframe with the motor and replace it all at once. Including the water pump that is a lot easier to change while the timing cover is off, and is on the back of the engine under the exhaust manifold.
ok....after watching this video I definitely tell that my equinox needs to have its timing chain looked at. Mine does not accelerate from stop like that. Thank you!
My daughter's 2013 Equinox just had one of the guides break, according to a Chevy dealer. They insist on a new engine and a local mechanic also says a new engine is needed since the chain likely jumped a couple of teeth and has smashed the valves and cylinders. Is the valve/cylinder collision true? I'm probably going to try and repair myself.
Valves can contact pistons but of my own personal experience only see maybe 1 out of 25 smash the intake valves when the chain goes. Most shops won't get into them just for liability because of their high failure rate. Cylinder leakdown test with cams out while doing timing chain will verify if Cylinders are sealing or have bent valves
Hmm I have the same vehicle, I got a “low power” message in a neighborhood area. I’m wondering if I bent a valve? I turned the car off in that neighborhood and it didn’t start since. Any advice for my Chevy equinox 2013?
Hey i need help lol i have a 2010 equinox , yesterday it shut off in reverse, put it in park and it turned back on. today it was going up between 5-6,000 rpm trying to speed up to 55 mph… got to work shut it off and tried to turn back on and won’t turn on at all. the last week or so there’s been a chain noise while trying to turn on. everyone says it’s the timing chain, sound right? i have codes for my catalytic converter, camshaft position timing over advanced, 02 sensor circuit high voltage, 02 sensor circuit no activity, catalyst system not up to efficiency
I’m considering if I should just trade in my 2010 Equinox for a Toyota. The mechanic said he heard the timing chain faintly, I just self repaired my exhaust manifold split in two. I don’t have the money to really pay for repairs.
Quick question? Can you remove the old guide bolt and put in the upgraded timing chain bolt guide , without doing a whole timing chain job? I was told you can replace tensioner as well ,but gotta remove valve cover to release pin ., Just wondering if can upgrade, since I don't need a timing chain job right now.
Imo I wouldn't bother doing either if there is nothing wrong right now, the guide bolt isn't really an upgrade, just a means of being able to repair an engine that has blown that bolt off. The bolt will only break out of the head after the plastic guide has exploded. The tensioner can be replaced without teardown but you would have no way to know if your timing is still correct after releasing chain tension by pulling out the original tensioner.
I have a ‘13 equinox that I just started taking apart and has shredded the top chain guide and started eating away at the metal. So I’m going to be getting into soon. Question; your equinox was still running with this issue, mine is not. Just seems to be spinning. Is it because it’s out of time that it’s not starting or could it be something else in addition to the broken timing parts?
Starter is good, high pressure pump is newly replaced, tank pump turns on, new spark plugs and they all spark, I can feel compression when I pull a spark plug, cover the hole, and have some one try to start the motor… going to be doing the timing next as stated above…. Just want any other thoughts as to why. Thanks for any and all help
If timing is off and won't start then when you pull apart for timing repair pull both camshafts out and do a cylinder leak down test to be sure there are no bent intake valves. With metal shavings from chain and guides going thru the motor there are going to be a host of variables on any engine but I would start with your timing chain and do a leak down
my 2013 was making a noise like that and just died on me yesterday i wouldve stopped using it but had to get to work ima try n check the timing chain now
If engine stops running and only cranks and the chain is really loose are the valves bent or NOT NECESSARILY ???? Any one have experience changing the chain after chain goes completely out and not pulling the head?
If your rocker arms haven't fallen out then the valves should be fine. You can do a cylinder leakdown test to verify sealing. Typically if the valve is bent the rocker arm will fall out as there is no tension to keep it in place once the valve can't close. Real world experience I've only seen 2 equinoxs that have bent valves and I would blame the customer for both of those as they drove it with no oil and then continued driving after the chains went out
Hopefully you see this comment soon. My car was said to have a bad timing chain and that it would cost $2000 to fix. If I had my son fix it, where would I get the parts needed?
Any auto parts will likely have all the parts in stock for this repair or could also go to any gm dealer for the parts, all are regularly replaced and shouldn't have any trouble finding them
But are the replacement parts any better than the original or is this needed again later? I have an '09 LE5 ecotec that has a noisy chain. Otherwise been a good car though.
Nothing upgraded to my knowledge and very common to go out, the plastic guides are the real issue with them, on your engine I usually have good results with replacing chain kit and cleaning out the oil pan if there is any breakage
I have 2016 gmc terrain I’m having timing chain problems too. In fact my car won’t start at all. The shop talking about 1700 I said hell no not today, the toughest part I came to was the crankshaft pulley. I busted my balls trying to get that off
My 2010 burns up a whole quart of oil every 500miles 🤦♀️ I won’t talk about how many times I’ve had to replace the timing chain and everything it touches. You literally need to check and top off the oil every week with this vehicle. I run through a whole 5qt jug before I’m even due for a change 😥
@@BustedtoBuilt Thanks for putting this video on here. People like you give me hope for the human race. So I'm guessing your Equinox doesn't have a low oil warning message that pops up on your HUD? I have a '14 Malibu with the 2.5 Ecotec, and it always warns me when I'm a quart low. I bought mine new, and it has always consumed a quart of oil between oil changes. I've also always changed it every 5000 miles myself. I found your video on here because I just replaced the timing chain on mine. It wasn't making any noise, but I did have the P0016 code, and the tensioner was maxed out but the chain was still snug. 173,000 miles on it so far. Again, thanks for posting this!
Thanks for the video. I have 2.4 (2009 Pont G6) and rattles from VVT cam phaser location. I pulled the valve cover and there is chain slack dangling between the cam phasers. Only makes noise when hot and idling and when you race it up its quiet.. It had a new chain ,guides, and tensioner. Would the chain slack and slapping noise be to the failed cam phaser ? thanks and appreciate your feedback.
You sir just convinced me to go ahead and replace my timing chain. I have a 2011 Equinox with 90k miles. It uses oil, I've been pretty good checking the oil and topping it up. I would occasionally get a P0014 which would go away with an oil change or change the solenoid. Just 3 days ago I got the dreaded P0016, but the engine runs ok (as good as this engine can) so I was thinking i'll just keep driving it, not now. Just ordered the timing set and gaskets from Rock auto. The dealership wanted 8 hrs plus parts for doing the job. Should i replace the VVT sprockets too or would they be ok?
It would not be a bad idea to do them while apart if something you plan to continue to drive. They are also a fairly common failure. Thanks for watching!
I am getting the P0014 code, did an oil change and changed out intake and exhaust solenoids and still getting the code. Took it to a mechanic and they said they think it is the timing chain and charged me $160. It isn't making any weird noises or clicks. How soon after the oil change did the light go away?
@@TheJmcraezy reset the codes ,disconnect the battery then see..Mine keeps getting metal shavings all over the cam sensors..If I clean them it fixes it..Gotta be the guide bolts or something wearing.Damn
s there a way to adjust the timing without marks? I took the chain out and my stupidity allowed me to turn the the sprocket s individually, which turned the cams. Now I have no idea where I am at. Call me an idiot because I am. 2015 Chev malibu 2.5
Im doing mine as we speak and im wondering how you dropped the oil pan as far as the dip stick goes....did you just pull the pan and dip stick stayed or did it come w it or what jw plz lmk thanks...
My 11 has 104k and started having issues accelerating and the engine power reduced. No codes besides mass airflow sensor, camshaft, crankshaft. Can and crankshafts were recently replaced. Went to start car and was only cranking but not turning over. Replaced mass airflow and spark plugs and still no good. Repair shop said it could be the timing chain but there’s a chance it fucked the engine up. Not sure if I should even bother fixing it.
Probably not worth putting any money into the motor you currently have unless just wanting to band aid together to sell. If something you plan to drive for a while would suggest a remanufactured engine that will have the updated internal parts so these problems don't keep reoccurring. Sorry about the luck with your vehicle but thank you for watching!
@@timh36 Nope they created more issues. The turbochargers fail, pistons crack, and they have very similar problems with the 1.4 turbo engine that was in the Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Trax, and the Buick Encore which is failing turbochargers, problems with the thermostat and water pump, valve cover problems, intake manifold problems, PCV system problems, and cracked pistons which requires a new engine and the problem is that it’s very difficult and expensive to get a new engine and a lot of the cars are sitting in the shop for up to a year in some cases because GM can’t build enough engines to keep up with the demand and most likely the engine will arrive by 2024. Even if the car is still under factory warranty, customers still have to wait months to get the car back and some cases, the lemon law got involved and made GM buy the car back. Sure you can buy a used engine but the salvage yard wants $2,000 for just the engine and in some cases $3,000 or even $4,000 for a low mileage used engine that’s complete. The $2,000 engine doesn’t include accessories like the water pump, thermostat, turbocharger, intake manifold, and sometimes no valve cover. It’s just the long block. My theory is that GM got rid of the Trax and the Encore and replaced them with a new model with a completely different engine so that GM can build more 1.4 turbocharged engines for customers with blown engines. I don’t know if that’s true or not but either way, GM discontinued that engine option.
If you have only replaced timing kit or components it's not necessary to prime. If engine has been opened up further like crank bearings or cylinder head then would be a wise choice
I have a question hopefully I can get an answer from you... This 2014 equinox when setting the timing...Left is at 10 o'clock and right is at 2 o'clock and the crank is at 5 o'clock...the issue I'm having...is there is only 2 black markers on the timing chain where the last one had 3 and matched up on all 3 spots here the 2 marks line up on the 5 o'clock and none of the others or 2 o'clock and none of the others...does this make any difference in setting the timing?
I would purchase a chain with 3 marks on it, otherwise you can just count the links on your old chain and reference that to your mystery 2 marked link chain
I wanted to know what could it possibly means when your 2012 equinox cranks but won’t start we tried the battery and camshaft neither one was the issue cause it keeps doing the same thing crank but won’t start. Can someone help me with answers
I’ve 2013 equinox with the same issue and the mechanic didn’t know it unit it stopped running. What do you recommend? Is it worth fixing it or needs new a motor ?
I would recommend a new motor, even if the one in it is able to be repaired I wouldn't rely heavily on it to last reliably to get you far. A remanufactured engine will come with a warranty and all internal updates
I have 2014 Malibu with p0016. Replaced solenoids but code still on. Weird thing is car sounds and runs fine and the light comes on and off. Mechanic thinks it’s most likely the phasers as the car sounds fine. Getting the whole timing set replaced as I’m at 137,000
Yes got it looked at. There was a bolt that was loose that luckily didn’t get into the engine and the guides for the timing chain were loose. Just had them fill the the timing set so it’ll be good for awhile.
Thanks for watching, sorry you felt duped. Many are under the impression that when they get to that point the only option is to replace engine. Others have found it helpful but I understand where you're coming from
2015 Equinox, 59000 miles. Mice made nest on top of cabin air filter - TWICE. Had to pull blower each time because so much crap on filter fell down when it was removed. Timing chain started making noise around 35,000.Now sounds like it coming apart. A/C blows from dash vent but will not change to defrost or heat vents. Sitting at stop light car surges forward, have to stand on brakes. Dealer sent me a card wanting to but it back. Sold it to them for $500 less than KBB highest amount for good condition. Good riddance !!!!!!!!
Got one of this with a bunch of crankshaft position codes and fuel pressure regulator codes should i be checking the stretch on the chain? The only part is recommending is the vvt/vct solenoids but i change those but a year ago. Thanks
Had a mechanic do a chain and guides repair for this woman. She shows me it does and 5 rattle on start up. Can you tell if this might be a tensioner. Or is this a oil pressure fed enhanced tensioner. I’m a motorcycle mechanic so I’m just feeling out how I can help her have a safe quiet motor. TIA
How much was the total cost? Used valve cover and chain? Just cleaning those solenoids are good ? If the 2 bolts on bottom of timing chain are compromised is it ok to change 1 and leave the brokw one?
I would change any and broken parts. My vehicle was fine with just cleaning the solenoids but all scenarios may be different. Total cost was maybe $80 for oil, filter and used valve cover.
Hey quick question, i got same motor on a terrain, just did timing chain replacement and cranked up good, look like the timing is good to go, but 10 seconds after startup low oil pressure stop engine warning comes up, the only thing that i can think about is that when i put the cover back on, the wedge didnt line up with the crankshaft and oil pump is not spinning, but if that were the case, doesn’t the cover interfere with the wedge and doesn’t lay down right? It did lay down good and every bolt tight to specs. Thank you in advance
The keyway is only to index the balancer. The oil pump is driven by the flats on balancer but as you stated wouldn't go together if wasn't assembled properly. Was low oil pressure verified with mechanical gauge?
@@BustedtoBuilt wait, did the harmonic balancer have to be installed for the oil pump to spin?? I haven’t installed yet, just crank it up to check timing and if good than put everything back together.
@@BustedtoBuilt just went to my garage, couldn’t wait to tomorrow, put the harmonic balance in, tight it, started the car up and bingo no more low oil pressure. Didnt know the pump spin off the harmonic balance, your answer to my original comment fix it my problem, thank you so much 💪
It's skipped time then if there is no compression, next step would be to do a cylinder leakdown test to check for valve damage and if ok then should be able to put a timing set into to repair
@@BustedtoBuilt I’ve got a 2012 Malibu with the 2.4. 115k miles on it. Oil and filter changed every 5k with synthetic since new and I stay on top of the oil level and make sure it’s not low. I’d love to get another 100k miles out of this car.
I got a tune up about a month ago and my check engine light would come and go but this tick kinda went away after the tune up but today it was making this exact noise but for maybe a week or so now it won’t start.. someone said I blew my engine is it true?
I have a similar problem, equinox 2011. I changed the chains and tensioners and the noise like yours increased, but it only appears when the car warms up (operating temperature). Can be VVT Camshaft?
The phasers do go bad often and will make a lot of noise. Any trouble codes or noise only? Typically if timing is good and phaser gets bad enough it will throw a code for the suspect phaser in the form of a correlation code for either intake or exhaust
@@BustedtoBuilt before changing the current kit, it had code P0011 and there was a lot of side noise. I changed the chains, tensioners and guides, erased the fault code. No idea how I’m going to get the bolt out of the block. Everything on this car seems to be designed to be frustrating but easy to fix if you can drop the engine
I have the same ecotec engine... @@aljohame It's probably still your timing chain, I just replaced a belt and tensioner on 2011 equinox, same thing as you the timing chain quiets down above 1200 rpm. You could easily pull the valve cover off and check the timing chain for slack. I'm going to replace the timing chain now.

Sight unseen I would put my money on it needing a timing chain, just pull the valve cover off and inspect. More than likely will have the guides shredded off same as this equinox in the video
Change your VVT Solenoids and reset your code. Use the Dorman replacement parts. Pull your rear cam sensor and see if there is metal flakes on the face of it in direct sunlight. If not you are probably ok. Frequent oil changes!
So many of these videos spend a lot of time explaining what needs to be done and why things went bad, but never enough time spent on actual R&R of the stuff being replaced. No mention of the cam sprocket bolts needing replacement because they are apparently of the torque yield variety and no mention of the 100 degree turn past the factory torque specs, and nothing showing how one holds the cam sprockets from turning as the bolts are torqued down. Nothing showing the replacement of the chain guides and what one has to go through to do that. Nothing about the colored chain links as to how to correctly time the camshafts to the crankshaft. Nothing about the need to remove the cam sprockets to facilitate removal of the chain, nor any mention of the difference between the intake cam sprocket and the exhaust cam sprocket. Are those two variable cam timing sensors interchangeable? If not, no mention of keeping them labeled. Every video I've watched (6 of them) highlighted a different aspect of parts replacement, but not one video went through everything from beginning to end to show how it's all done. Guess I'll just have to learn as I go as I've done for many decades.
Hi i have almost same situation with the code p0017, i change the sensors and the time chain, and the checking light still on doesn’t turn off, but it runs smooth but what to do with the checking light

@@garmin1488 I had a check engine light for the same codes. I had the entire timing mechanism replaced including sprockets, guides, tensioner etc. the codes were cleared using an obd tool and they haven’t come on since
Why is there so much mixed info on google showing chain and belt both. Extremely frustrating and to trust a mechanic to guarentee his work. 2013 equinox. 154k miles. I would never attempt this.
Looking at a 2010 that the owner disclosed had jumped a tooth of timing. He did a timing set on it and now running fine. I know it’s an interference motor. Is it to good to be true that the motor is good now? Is it a ticking time bomb?
The 10 models are all ticking time bombs. Pull the oil cap off with it idling and will likely have excessive pressure from crankcase blowing out. They didn't get them right from New so if original motor it's sure to just be a band-aid putting the timing set in. The real problem imo is cylinder blow by and oil consumption. Timing set is just usually the first symptom.
Question, do you need to remove the motor mount? doesn't look like you did, I've seen others that did. Can you access all the bolts with the mount still in place? thanks
Do not need to remove motor mount. Will need to trim timing cover gasket to be done but is fairly self explainitory once you pull off the timing cover what needs to happen
@@BustedtoBuilt thanks for your reply, I just took it off now. had a hard time getting the timing cover off, so i took the mount off for more space. Just had mine replaced 8 months ago and it has to be done again; the chain stretched. I probably got a weak chain. I am not happy about it! 🤨
Ensure NEW components are used, should include replacement of ALL gears, tensioners, guides and torque to yield bolts
Thank you!
Very welcome, good luck with repair
Sounds like you're probably into it for a motor now
I’m considering if I should just trade in my 2010 Equinox for a Toyota.
@@BustedtoBuilt thanks for info, now I have more of an understanding of those parts. 👍
how much should this job cost total?
With metal shavings from chain and guides going thru the motor there are going to be a host of variables on any engine but I would start with your timing chain and do a leak down
great job I knew it was going to run.
would the chain affect the knock sensor codes? i keep getting a p0324 and p0326 and i have already changed the sensor and nothing
I have seen quite a few that will set codes for knock sensors with bad chains. Not saying that's your problem but it would not be uncommon
my 2013 was making a noise like that and just died on me yesterday i wouldve stopped using it but had to get to work ima try n check the timing chain now
If engine stops running and only cranks and the chain is really loose are the valves bent or NOT NECESSARILY ????
Any auto parts will likely have all the parts in stock for this repair or could also go to any gm dealer for the parts, all are regularly replaced and shouldn't have any trouble finding them
That's a steal!
For a 4 banger that engine sounded good, nice job explaining the pit falls. How many miles did this Equinox have?
This one had 140k on it
@@BustedtoBuilt mine has 160k just tore off the valve cover today mine was looser, but didn't bust thru the top
My next project after I take it on a 1000 mile drive. Fingers crossed.
How much is a timing chain job on one of those?
1-2k depending on the amount of carnage
Thanks for the video ,man !
You are a gentleman, not saying is a crap engine !
I appreciate that!
I have 2016 gmc terrain I’m having timing chain problems too. In fact my car won’t start at all. The shop talking about 1700 I said hell no not today, the toughest part I came to was the crankshaft pulley. I busted my balls trying to get that off
They can be a bugger, props for tackling yourself!
At least you know how to stay on top of it. People don't believe me when I say check it everyday
Bro I’m in the same boat. I just did the timing chain. I hate this engine.
Potentially could be
You sir just convinced me to go ahead and replace my timing chain.
What tools did you use? I wanna try to replace mine
You might want to change the water pump while you're in there
s there a way to adjust the timing without marks? I took the chain out and my stupidity allowed me to turn the the sprocket s individually, which turned the cams. Now I have no idea where I am at. Call me an idiot because I am. 2015 Chev malibu 2.5
More quality engineering from GM 🤦🏻
So I did all of that EXCEPT dropping the oil pan and cleaning the pickup. Could that be why it still sounds like a chain saw?
Could have something to do with it
Are the new parts to replace everything with better quality or is it just the overall design of the 2.4?
Thanks
It's just the 2.4 I have seen both o.e.m. and aftmatket parts do the same thing. Nothing I've seen that has been what might be called an "upgrade"
Thats what I figured. Thank you and thanks for the video.
Perfect intro.
Thanks!
Im doing mine as we speak and im wondering how you dropped the oil pan as far as the dip stick goes....did you just pull the pan and dip stick stayed or did it come w it or what jw plz lmk thanks...
One bolt holds the dipstick tube to the intake. Just remove the bolt and the tube will pull out of the pan
@@BustedtoBuilt oh.....lol....i just pulled all pan bolts and dripped the pan...dip stick diddnt even have to move at all

I’m hoping this is the only issue in my 2018 Chevy Equinox
Fingers crossed
I believe the 2018 was a different engine than these, so hopefully they solved some of the issues
Hi, you skipped the 'surgery'; is it actually this easy to do ?? ANY tips on the alignment points of the components ??
Pretty easy to do, it's mostly a click bait video unfortunately for anyone looking for good content. Not really any tips either, thanks for watching
Why does my 2011 equinox oil turn dark in short amount of time and marks that it doesn’t have oil..?? It had the same noise as well
Blow by. Poor piston and ring to cylinder fitment on these. The root cause of most problems with this motor
They burn the oil that leaks past piston while sending the carbon from the combustion process into the crankcase
Idk if you reply to this video anymore. Im curious, is it necessary to prime the oil pump and engine with oil before starting the motor?
If you have only replaced timing kit or components it's not necessary to prime. If engine has been opened up further like crank bearings or cylinder head then would be a wise choice
@BustedtoBuilt thanks for your reply man!
Can someone help me with answers
we're interested and den we need more videos
I’ve 2013 equinox with the same issue and the mechanic didn’t know it unit it stopped running. What do you recommend? Is it worth fixing it or needs new a motor ?
I would recommend a new motor, even if the one in it is able to be repaired I wouldn't rely heavily on it to last reliably to get you far. A remanufactured engine will come with a warranty and all internal updates
So much for china and the bicycle chain used by chevrolet.
LMAO!!!! You still got 50k miles left. Not bad. Just add some electrical tape to cover it up. LOL!!!
I have 2014 Malibu with p0016. Replaced solenoids but code still on. Weird thing is car sounds and runs fine and the light comes on and off. Mechanic thinks it’s most likely the phasers as the car sounds fine. Getting the whole timing set replaced as I’m at 137,000
Hopefully that will solve it, thanks for watching! If still having troubles a scope of the cam and crank wave patterns should give some good insight
Yes got it looked at. There was a bolt that was loose that luckily didn’t get into the engine and the guides for the timing chain were loose. Just had them fill the the timing set so it’ll be good for awhile.
What was the magic part? Just looked like a normal timing chain job and you didn't even show us the process. .But you got a good deal on it anyway.
A little JB weld on on that valve cover and send it!
Got one of this with a bunch of crankshaft position codes and fuel pressure regulator codes should i be checking the stretch on the chain? The only part is recommending is the vvt/vct solenoids but i change those but a year ago. Thanks

136,000 miles
It is an oil fed tensioner, if the chains, guides and tensuoner are done already then I might be looking at the oil pump losing its prime
Thanks for reply. Losing prime. Is that a block off plunger with debris in it. Is it located in the oil pump or it on the block in known location. TIA
The pump is in the timing cover
This happened to me. Bought an equinox from a dealership and it didn’t it make it to the first oil change.

Didnt know the pump spin off the harmonic balance, your answer to my original comment fix it my problem, thank you so much 💪
You are very welcome, happy was able to help, no 2 engines ever built the same way it seems.
And do u have to put the first cylinder at top dead center when working on this?
You can if you want, the marks are on the chain and sprockets so it really doesn't matter. Just makes it easier to work on
did you change the reluctor?
No
I have the same problem with the guide breaking up top but the cars not firing/no compression
It's skipped time then if there is no compression, next step would be to do a cylinder leakdown test to check for valve damage and if ok then should be able to put a timing set into to repair

Almost exactly like yours, chain had worn off the upper chain guide and just starting to wear on the rocker cover, black guide was broken into three and worn. So far everything is going smoothly. I bought VVT sprockets too. thanks again
@Garmin1 glad video was resourceful! Thanks for watching!
Have you try crazy glue? 😂
They're disposable enough I think on the next one I'll give it a shot lol. Thanks for watching!
JB Weld
Wtf. Yeah it was a magic fix because you didn’t even show how you did it
Glad you're impressed! Thanks for watching!
What tools required for timing chain replacement
Nice video
Just get a volvo 940 and enjoy forever!
Anything but one of these!
My step daughters lasted 170k before the timing went out.
That's a pretty good run!
Nice video...
Thanks for watching!
