Marlena Shaw passed away on January 19, 2024. She was 81. It was in the early 1970s that Marlena Shaw truly became a star, her stunning looks and equally stunning voice winning over fans around the world, and landing hits like "Woman of the Ghetto" and her signature song, "California Soul." Shaw’s sultry, honeyed vocals, coupled with socially conscious lyrics, captivated audiences of the era. In the end, Marlena Shaw was an artist whose broad talent made her tough to categorize, a singer who was comfortable singing pop, soul, jazz and just about anything else around which she wrapped her exquisite phrasing. It's 2024 Who's Still Here
When do people say "they just don't make them like that anymore" this is what they're talking about.
Had the pleasure of seeing her in Charlotte many years ago. Fabulous but so underrated. She never really received her due

Amazing performance? Rest in peace!
I just found out that Marlena Shaw has passed away. Her singing and the eclectic range of her vocal talent are a performance I wish I could've experienced in person. Especially her version of the Roberta Flack song "Feel Like Making Love".
I love MISS SHAW ! I've seen her twice in a club on Sunset in Hollywood back in the late 70's. She was phenominal ! All the class and talent is real !

She really knew how to play the room. True talent. To bad she didn’t let someone else pick the music.

I never really knew too much about her... she was a victim, she sounded too much like Nancy Wilson!
victim of what?
@@ericdavis6261 when you sound to much like another artist you become a victim. Like Vesta sounded like Chaka khan and there are e few artist that sound like Stevie wonder. Its all about being unique in this industry.
@@rondothard1698 who does she sound like?
@@ericdavis6261 Nancy wilson
@@rondothard1698 Well, Nancy sounds great, but Marlena sounds like Marlena and no one else.
