Doesn't work like people think. You can stumble and just stutter through a tournament a la Italy 2021. England could still go on to win it. On current form no but tournaments never go to script. England were very lucky yesterday and very lucky v Denmark. Serbia also deserved a point v England. It is often not great football that gets you through. Argentina talent wise were not best team on paper in 2022 WC but won. Portugal also were not best team on paper in 2016.

I was left speechless and shocked by our performance yesterday. I actually made a primal scream at the TV, during the match, and for the first time ever during this whole sorry debacle of performances, like many others, I felt something leave me for the very first time; my belief in England, A surprise victory did not make it return, its sweetness just tasted bítter

@@janedeacondeacon9832 does Rice play that deep for Arsenal? Saka should be replaced with Palmer in my opinion. Gordon on the left and a middle trio of Rice Bellingham and Foden. Making tactical changes in the 83rd and 94th minute is poor management. You wouldn’t accept it at club level so why would you at the most elite competition in Europe.
Also if players are underperformaing make the changes early, the bench is just as talented as the starting 11.

Whenever you hear anybody say ‘no such thing as an easy draw, you have to beat everybody…’ etc, tell them we were that bad, at least 6 teams loads better than us left in the tournaments, and yet we are still 7/2 favourites for the whole thing and the reason is cos we are on ‘that’ side of the draw. It simply has to be down to managerial instruction. Just a guess could it be that Gareth Southgate with these players thinks in his head they can play like Manchester City because of the premier league current form of playing. Moving up the field in curves, side to side the odd couple of triangles then pass it into the net like a Man City or an Arsenal. If this is the case then he hasn't grasped the changing complexities of European, World and above all tournament football.

I'm Scottish and I'll be betting on England. We gave Switzerland their hardest game (according to the Swiss) so that doesn't bode well for the swiss
The first time Gabby has said something that isn't rubbish!
There's a lot of parallels with the 1990 WC - we were abysmal in the group stage and very lucky to get through the last 16 and QF - we finally put a good performance in against W Germany and lost..
The players talk as if the fans don’t know what they’re talking about and then you look at Spain they went 1-0 down in the first half and convincingly still beat Georgia, and you could argue other than Rodri Yamal Williams and a couple others they aren’t the best squads/most talented squad at the tournament yet they’ve been playing consistently well. And it comes down to balance in the team everyone knowing their roles and playing their roles there isn’t just a barrage of crosses in hope that one gets headed in like we played vs Slovakia. The worst thing is as normal people and fans we can see what needs to change within the squad selection and have theories on ways to help give the team more balance and see how certain players in games can make a difference if they get to come on yet Southgate who is the highest paid manager and apparently the most successful England manager (I don’t see any trophies) can’t see or if he does see it is too stubborn with his favourites to fix the glaring issues that expose the team, we all see that foden isn’t a winger so why continue to play him there when he’ll just drift into the middle anyway, put Bellingham and rice together move foden into the 10 put Gordon on the left and tell Kane to play as a target man not a false 9 we all know he can pass and play as a midfielder but we don’t need that we need what Ollie Watkins has been good at driving at the defence getting behind them with runs and if you’re not going to play Watkins then at least instruct Kane to not be so drawn into the middle as it’s just limiting the space

It was Ivan Toney's headed assist which caused Kane to score the winning goal, so Southgate should start him for the next match and not leave him sitting on the bench until the last minute.
Toney looked like a carthorse when he came on and hasn't scored a goal since February. Watkins needs to start either alongside or instead of Kane as offers us pace and a goalscoring threat.
What game were you watching? 😂 😂😂 Toney only had a few touches but he contributed to both goals and he had a couple good pieces of holdup play. He did his job, nowhere near a "carthorse".

Rewatching the match I was disappointed that Slovakia could not see that England was there to be beaten..The approach should have been set for a counter attack and break with purpose, they disappeared from the game as an attacking threat due to wanting to manage the game to victory...No need for that..

The game will be decided on how the Swiss exploit the lack of movement of Walker (he had a nightmare) and England exploit poor Swiss defending from high balls into the box..
I disagree about Slovakia. I thought they were pretty average after they got their goal. England however was poor. You can't just blame Southgate but you cannot deny he is a negative coach.
I don’t think saka is performing. I keep seeing comments about the left side of our play and saka is having problems too. Both wings keep turning back onto their stronger legs slowing down the counter attacks. I want to see a formation change. Two upfront, two wingers who don’t turn back and More crosses in the box.

Most likely the players have questioned Southgate about the players he left behind and playing others out of position, with Southgate lecturing them like like a school teacher speaking to school boys. Let me help you all. The “Golden Generation” of young players are just that. They look good in good teams where older, wiser heads direct them and choose when and how to organise them. No Rodri, No De Bruyne, no Foden. No Jorginho, no Odegard, no Saka or Rice. No Real Madrid, no Bellingham. It’s obvious. Don’t expect from them.

Agbonlahor having a dig at Southgate, who took over after the disaster of Iceland in 2016 and is now in his fourth consecutive quarter final. He went World Cup semi final in 2018, followed by the Euro Final in 2020, followed by an unlucky quarter final defeat to France in 2022. As for Agbonlahor slagging off Kane, he wishes he had about a tenth of the ability as Kane in his career.
