    Reporters having to attack the players with their questions because no one is allowed to ask Southgate anything remotely probing or challenging without being uninvited from pressers then leads to moments like Bellingham caring more about critics than football. Why is no journalist asking about the lack of balance down the left, the inability to create clear chances with Foden, Kane and Bellingham dropping into the same space, not using any pacy wingers when we need to stretch teams, starting the same 10 players every game despite it clearly not working? ITV, BBC, Sky Sports analysts are all being critical, yet no one wants to directly ask Southgate these questions.

Stones is going up for headers that Guehi has covered on the left side - why? - does Stones not trust Guehi?..... Neville, of all pundits, is the closest to outlining Southgate's mindset/overriding tactics but none have clearly indentified it... so here it is.
    Southgate has instructed his defenders and DMs to avoid ‘risky’ passes in the centre of the pitch to avoid giving away possession in dangerous areas. That's it.
    And this is why we don’t flow through the lines. This is why our defenders and DM players aren't playing balls forward or even sideways to other players in tight spaces which is how you create flowing moves and gain advantages and move up the pitch. So instead players feel they must choose the safe pass which of course means our flow is sideways and backwards (and at best up the wings) and often it ends with a defender or the keeper finally lumping it upfield because there are no more safe passes to be made.
    So that is the passing/ ball retention mindset Southgate has drilled into the players and especially the 2 DMs and the defenders and goalkeeper.
    That is why TAA will never play at RB under Southgate in any meaningful game. His passes are too high risk. That is why Mainoo and Rice weren't trusted to receive balls in tight areas in the middle of the pitch versus Slovakia
    And given the lack of a left footed left back that's why the ball goes up that flank only to return to the CBs each and every time.
    That's Southgate ball - will he change v Switzerland? No
    The only hope is that he plays Gordon so we have a real outlet for getting down that flank into dangerous areas. Will he play Gordon? probably not.
    So the idea will be that we won't gift Switzerland an easy goal - they will have to earn it. And because we have world class attacking talent the laws of probability suggest we will always score at least 1 goal in a game.
    So that's it and that's how it's gonna be in every game

      @Whymisterioughta 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @ianstrickland
      @ianstrickland 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could be right. The only uncertainty is whether these are tactical decisions, or whether the players are themselves too afraid to play the riskier balls. It also could be true that teams know quite well how we're going to play so crowd the midfield and then press hard on our wingers to prevent them turning and running. You do make a solid point though that our tactical approach, in part, is clearly built on solid defence. There isn't anything wrong with that, but it just isn't good to watch and unless your attackers are firing and will balanced, you're stuffed.

    • @sittingonmysofa
      @sittingonmysofa 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it's similar in some ways to the French approach under Deschamps. But as bad as they are playing it's not as bad as England. Southgate has to at least solve the left wing / Foden problem. So maybe Shaw will be the one change along with Guehi being unavailable. He surely can't play Trippier/Foden again on the left

      However I don't think I could ever give Southgate any praise at all for it , it feels like I would be celebrating for all the past heartbreak of teams almost winning it , I wouldn't be celebrating what this team have done so to speak.
      After the initial celebrating though , in the cold light of day , if we won playing like this and just winning on luck then I would feel slightly embarrassed, I've felt more passion in 98 when the 10 men gave absolutely everything to win , the tears of the goal by Campbell being ruled out, still hurts , because we deserved to win that night , I have more feelings over the memories of that night than anything the last three tournaments have provided.
      I don't remember feeling pride of getting to the final a couple of years back , my ultimate memory is Southgate going out of his way to make sure we drew that game, he gave us no passion , so I feel none.
      A loss in a knockout game in 98 makes me more proud of a team than any of Southgates games as manager.

I'm in the camp that I wanted Rice and Bellingham to be the midfield pair, but since Mainoo has come in and done well I doubt we'll see that at all at this point which means if we want Gordon on the pitch, Foden or Bellingham have to be left out if we intend on keeping this system. It's a ridiculous and unfortunate circumstance that Southgate has forced us into.

    We can't even play out from the back against Slovakia, 80% of our passes were in our own half, we gave the ball away, had no ideas going forward, left naturally wide attacking players (which we were crying out for) on the bench. It's too late to change all these problems especially with Southgate making the decisions. Zero chance of playing a decent game let alone getting through the next round.
    The worst thing is that Southgate is oblivious to what is going on.

    Southgate's biggest mistake was only to bring one injured left back Luke Shaw. Second was not picking Grealish in the squad who can play along side with Foden. When Saka not playing good enough, both wings of England were paralized in attacking and putting players in the middle under high pressure from opponent's defenders. Sofar England's goals were started from right wings to create space and opportunities for Jude and Harry.

    Ridiculous! In the knockout stages he beat Columbia (penalties), Sweden, Germany, Ukraine, Denmark, Senegal and Slovakia.
    ALL of them, bar Germany, are games England HAVE to win. They are not an accomplishments.
    He has got far in tournaments because of lucky draws not tactics or ability
    He got relegated from the Nations League.
    He should have been sacked after his car crash performance against Italy in 2021. A rabbit in headlights, utterly our of his league
    England are a moments team because the manager has zero football ability and his only skill is PR.
    Wasting a talented squad.

    Gary is another melt perpetuating this myth that England have played well consistently during Southgate’s tenure. No they haven’t! They’ve had the odd game or two where they’ve actually played well and performed but for the vast majority of the time they’ve been flat and uninspired. They’ve gotten relatively good results during Southgate’s time and relatively good finishes at tournaments, relative to the resources they have but that’s masked how poorly they’ve played for the majority of Southgate’s time in charge. When you think about it, England haven’t won a tournament in FIFTY EIGHT years/TWENTY NINE tournaments since ‘66 (and even their one tournament win was at home) - it’s the biggest consistent failure in international sports history with the players they’ve had to choose from/budget/resources over the years.
    Utter embarrassment, should be ashamed!🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    Just watch the first 2 minutes of that game. Just passing to Pickford, then to Walker, then to Stones and back to Pickford.
    English football is about quality long balls, knockdowns, wingers, and crossing, shooting, set plays.
    Not Pep style of football!

    Kane needs to be dropped. The team has no dynamism with him involved. Opposition teams don’t fear him. He’s a goal scorer but not a trophy winner. With Kane involved England will not win the trophy. Ask Spurs, Bayern and England in the last two tournaments (missed penalty, missed chances). Kane is not ‘clutch’, Bellingham is.

    Apart from the last gasp goal and the early goal in first half extra time, the rest of the performance was shameful for English football. No fan of any nation wants to watch this non creative, clueless, fearful, negative, style of football. This is not the England way of playing the game ... COME ON ENGLAND - Up the pace - Create - Attack - Win.

    England are not Brazil, Netherlands, Spain or even Italy of old. Collectively they've always been a team built on rigidity, passion & physicality. They are not going to play like the '98 Brazil, the Netherlands of the late 70/80s or even recently the Spain of 2010. People need to put things into perspective, especially these pundits when it comes to performances. Are you expecting Kane to do 4 step overs, beat three men and place the ball into a empty net by rounding the goalkeeper? You play to the teams strengths.
    We are not a team built for possession, great dribblers or with beautiful one-two touch football with great individual flair players like those teams of old. If we're going to win its going to be done our own way, tournaments are funny sometimes (see Greece), its not always won due to performances Gary, as a United man yourself you know the importance of the end result how many finals did you win by 'Performing' to your best? It's all about winning at the end of the day, we can dream of playing like the tika taka Barcelona all we want but at the end of the day its the result that matters!
    You need some luck, a will to win and be able to play the whole 90 minutes with that attitude, which is exactly what we did against Slovakia. You cant score like that without that willingness to run for the whole 90minutes, give some credit too, would you all complain if we played like that but got the final with a chance of winning the tournament? Ask yourself that.

    What a snake this guy is. Last night him (and many other "experts") were raging mad and ready to sack Southgate, hang draw and quarter him and feed him to the crows. With a huge dollop of luck, now "Gareth" is doing a great job and Engerland are close to "deservedly" being favourites. What a load of tosh.

    Still overhyping Jude Bellingham, what about Toney header back across goal for Kane to score, service Kane has not been getting, what about Palmer getting the play forward with every ball, or Gallager stopping the rot in midfield. Bellingham is a great player but overhyping him is not good for him, football or England.

    The players getting upset at criticism , normal criticism not full on nastiness, just shows the sign of the times we live in , Southgate is treating them like spoiled children and how dare we be nasty people by dare criticising the performance.
    The media were disgraceful to Graham Taylor in 92 , it went overboard , but if that was over the top then , this media criticism is nothing, they have been kind in comparison. Pundits treading on eggshells because they might lose their job if they speak their mind against Southgate.
    It seems to me Southgate has got them more worried about criticism than their performances.
    Bellingham saying his celebration was a backlash to the criticism???? Well if you had all put in a performance there wouldn't be the backlash, you are playing poor , are they expecting lovely praise for playing awful 🤷‍♂️
    Southgate is treating them with all this modern nonsense where no one learns from mistakes because he doesn't want anyone criticising.
    He probably puts it all down to far ri gh t thugs.
    Southgate seems almost evangelical with the way he treats his players.

    Gary, you were a great player, but your punditry is really off the top of your head and, waffle really, say what you saw, the Southgate method for eight years, always boring, the qualifying group, no opposition to speak of, the Euro group, the easiest of all, Slovenia, and no disrespect to them, couldn't score a goal, just to get through that group was all Southgate wanted, and Slovakia? They deserved to win when England only depend on a speculative bicycle kick everyone is calling brilliant, I've seen school kids do that, its special when it goes in but iif the goalkeeper was where he was supposed to be he would have comfortably gathered it no problem, or a player on the line. It was sheer luck and England should be out given the awful displays in four matches now. Who wants to watch that headless chicken football England have been reduced to? So Gary, take a breath and think about what you are saying before it comes out of your mouth because you don't actually think before you speak. If they win the Euros playing like that football is dead and nothing to celebrate.
