this scene was actually really sad considering everything that happened up to that point. sure, thats a line no real human would ever say lol but i think it showed perfectly how confused, disappointed and emotionally destroyed padme was in that moment.
There's nothing generic or bland about it at all. It's a perfect elucidation of what the character is feeling at that moment. Her whole world has come crashing down and the man she loves turns out to be partly responsible. Upon learning this, she feels like her heart is breaking and she tells him so. People don't always speak in brilliantly articulate monologues you know. As for the acting, that's kinda subjective. You either believe an actor's performance or you don't.
ok those whom say bad line or acting . I ask this . Everything you say at all times never sounds corny or ever been overcome with emotions that speech is almost impossible? Take in contact his very young woman that has only loved one man, and part of that reason is because he stood for the same things she did. She is hormonal because because she is pregnant. And for her, her whole world just collapsed around her.
So everybody attacks the line "You're breaking my heart"(When it's a line that hundreds if not THOUSANDS of REAL people have said, and is delivered with some of the deepest sincerity of all the lines in the saga) with the viciousness of true fanboys, but "The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules!" from The Dark Knight and "You're pure evil" from TDKR get a pass? No...No, no, no. There is no way that "The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules!" and "You're pure evil" are better than this. Hypocritical, biased fucks, I love this scene.
It's not just the line, but the way she delivered it. There were also the high expectations fans had regading Anakin's downfall to the dark side that were crushed with poor character development, writing and acting.
Natan Baessi That's bullshit. She delivered it just fine, WAY better than the delivery of either of those previous lines. And Anakin's fall to the darkside was the best that it could have possibly been, the character development, writing and acting were all phenomenal and WAY better than the Original Trilogy. THAT is an excuse.
+Natan Baessi George Lucas can't direct for shit. Thankfully, Natalie Portman had numerous chances to prove she can in fact act. Maybe if you're not standing in a blue box it's easier? I personally think Hayden got more of the cringe worthy lines in the movie. There was no way to act them out from day one.
"The only sensible way to live in this world is without rules!" what's even supposedly bad about that? I have no issue with Padme's line, but what's your issue with that one? "You're pure evil" is a bit corny, but this quote is actually great, this is hands down the best version of Joker ever and the line expresses this character so well. There is nothing cringy, nothing sounds wrong, i don't get it lol
I agree that this line is a clishé, and I'm not verry moved when it's used in the movies. But the way this actress says it is something else. It feels so real, and that's what acting is all about.
She was upset about her current situation and reacted accordingly. At that point in time she wasn't speaking for anyone else nor would she be expected to. I'm sure there are others who agree with you just as I'm sure they are many others who don't. Dismissing the line because its common or "generic" is silly. "I love you" is a common and "generic" line but I'm sure you don't object to its usage in movies. When it fits, it fits. And "You're breaking my heart" fits this scene like a glove.
I know some people don't like it, but the more I see it the more I like it. I think most people today are just too jaded to believe lines like 'you're breaking my heart'.
I don't understand why so many people think this is bad acting or bad writing... When I saw this part in the movie, I was crying myself, as if I could really feel her heart breaking. How is that bad acting... So I completely agree with you. This is a very moving scene.
She's lying! You know she is. Shoulder shrug, deep short breathing. Anakin go and have a short relaxing break on the Moon of Endor, make bows and arrows with the local Ewoks; come back all refreshed and re consider what's happening. You know it makes sense.
Nonsense. People don't think about past experiences or compare their current situation to those of others when they are overwhelmed with emotion. They just feel and speak their mind, however uneloquent they sound. Yes, we are talking about script, acting and story, all of which in this case were perfectly fine. That you do not think her response was realistic doesn't mean that it wasn't. And I, and many others, found the film, scene, and performance in question both interesting and entertaining.
Yes but she's talking about how his actions have affected HER. It's really not a difficult concept to grasp. She, herself, is heartbroken by what he's done and what he intends to do because she, herself, wanted and expected so differently and that is why the line fits the scene absolutely perfectly. And Harrison changed the line because it was more in keeping with his character not because it's "generic".

Breaking Bad Walter White: “Hank and Marie have turned against me, now don’t you turn against me!” Flynn after finding out what his father is: “I don’t know you anymore. Dad (breathing), you’re breaking my heart”. You’re going down a path I can’t follow”. Walter White: “Because of Hank?” Flynn: “Because of what you’ve done. What you plan to do?”
Nonsense. It's only bland and generic in your opinion. It makes no sense to argue that it's "not very expressive" since it gets right to the point and expresses exactly what she is feeling at that moment. The fact that she articulates her own feelings does not mean nor suggest that she cares only for herself. I once heard a woman say those exact words to her teenage daughter because she didn't agree with the choices she was making as they were tearing her family apart. That's how people talk.
My ex boyfriend said this part of the movie really got to him because her voice sounded like mine here. Like, it almost brought him tears knowing he had actually broken my heart
exactly. his ANGER. u obviously missed the medical facility part. she chose to let go of her life than to live and watch what anakin had become. she was completely healthy but she just lost the will to live. read the book as well if u don't believe me.
@LilyMoth12 Same here, when I went to the theaters to watch it I cry so hard on this that my friends got scared. My mother practically forbid me to watch it near her... "They're actors not persons, don't be sad" she said :/

yeah it is true. u can die of heartbreak. if you lose a loved one, it is possible to release so many stress hormones out of your body that you suffer something similar to a heart attack. i looked it up online in a medical encyclopedia cuz i was curious when i saw padme's death at the end.

no shit dude. but when they took her to the medical center on the asteroid. the droid said that medically she is completely healthy, but she is dying because she lost the will to live. because anakin broke her heart. watch the full movie dude.
I love how I thought that this scene just reminded me so much of “YOURE TEARING ME APART” scene from The Room and I see in the comments that everyone else was thinking the same thing XD
Don't be silly, of course she wasn't. But we're talking about emotion here, which is relative to the moment. Is it your opinion, then, that realism is unimportant and people in movies should only say brilliantly original things? BTW I'm the audience too and I believed her performance.
