Agreed he was one of the best i grew from a boy to a man listening to him but you can't go without mentioning the man that was John peel he was too one of the greats of the airwaves and was the last of the djs on the airwaves to play whatever he wanted, you could go from techno to motzart in an instant. 2 of the greatest to have to privilege of listening too. Don't listen so much ATM because I am back at work but when I was home for a while with my daughter, his show was such a lifesaver, through a few difficult patches. Such a genuine, modest, witty and knowledgeable man. I went to a Friday Night is Music Night recording and Ken was so lovely, and warm in person like he is on air, quietly enjoying a pint before the doors opened.

I'm only 26, but I've listened to Steeve Wright since I was a kid. He was the voice during my homework after school, the voice towards the end of my awful shift work, now working at home I'd turn up Steve Right every single day. I loved Chris Evens, Steve Wright and Simon Mayo drive time. Bugger you BBC. That's me turned off radio two now, and the licence fee well that will be where the sun doesn't shine.
Part of my younger working life, afternoons spent in the bakery listening to you and all the show contributors, Mr Angry from Purley, Chervais, etc. You put in a long ol’ shift Steve. You can take off the headphones for the last time. RIP Sir.
How can you love someone you’ve never met? I so enjoyed listening to the programme on my way home from work every day, and tuned in to Sunday Love Songs too. It’s like losing a really good friend. I’m 57 and listened to him back in the radio 1 days, he’s always been a nice guy, avoided all controversy because it’s not about him, or his sexuality, as some so called jocks could learn from nowadays. Getting a radio station to listen to that’s decent is getting hard. Best of luck Steve

If they aren’t already they should make all shows available on iPlayer with a time warp feature so you can basically just go round and ‘start again’ like they do with frasier on c4 in the mornings. I’d love for my iPlayer just to be able to ‘set the date’ and then choose the classic shows I want to run at the original time slot. Guessing they could use so to update the news and stuff in between…

Like so many i've grown up listening to Steve, from Radio 1 to his slot on Radio 2, I can honestly say that no matter how bad things have been, and if you're having a really bad day, that opening bed at the start always lifted my mood, a true talent that can never be replaced, can't see any logic in replacing such an iconic show. 😢
Steve saw me through school, college, university and into work. He wil be sorely missed and was a big part of my life in the 80's with all the wonderful Steve Wright in the afternoon charcters on both Radio 1&2.

I have to say that Steve has been very dignified about the end of the Big Show since the announcement back in the summer. He got the tone spot-on yesterday. The end of the Big Show was also the final item on the 5pm news which followed. Nicki Cardwell ended it with the words: "Lord Wrighty of radio land, it's been an honour."
Give me £650,000 per year for decades for talking in between records and I also would be very dignified when they asked me to go . I wonder if he also received severance pay as a thank you . . I shed no tears . The BBC is dying because of the cost of these overpaid disc jockeys .
We ran the cafe near the BBC back in the 80s 90s . Steve would come in get his lunch, great guy , we always had his radio show on while we was working which cheered us up . You done a great job Steve .

Yes - that continuity, the warm tone, the "trust" that he'll play music we will like. The genuine interest in "the listener" and the guests. He really cared about putting on a good show but with a light touch.

Been listening to Steve Wright for longer than I remember .... always an entertaining show and he is a true professional... my favourite dj ❤ can't think why radio 2 has done this afternoon listening just won't be the same. A hard act to follow. Such a dignified exit from Steve and his crew... Will be sadly missed 😢

Just heard the news that Steve Wright has died. I’m literally in disbelief 🙁 I listened to his show regularly for 5 years in my taxi on my way to secondary school. He was an amazing presenter. He will be missed ❤️

Listening to the 70th birthday tribute on R2 right now. 17:45n Monday, August 26th 2024. A super collection of material, but shame on the BBC for not showing him the respect he deserved IN LIFE !
My dentist used to have him on in the background & always made me smile... Made going to the dentist ( nearly ) a pleasant experience...Steve , the airwaves have never been the same from 2 to 5 in the afternoon ...rest in peace , friend .

I have to say that Steve has been very dignified about the end of the Big Show since the announcement back in the summer. He got the tone spot-on yesterday.
The end of the Big Show was also the final item on the 5pm news which followed. Nicki Cardwell ended it with the words: "Lord Wrighty of radio land, it's been an honour."
What she said sums up how popular he is with everyone at the station...a top bloke

Give me £650,000 per year for decades for talking in between records and I also would be very dignified when they asked me to go . I wonder if he also received severance pay as a thank you . . I shed no tears . The BBC is dying because of the cost of these overpaid disc jockeys .

We ran the cafe near the BBC back in the 80s 90s . Steve would come in get his lunch, great guy , we always had his radio show on while we was working which cheered us up . You done a great job Steve .
I had coffee in Avellas every morning between 1987-1991. My girlfriend worked at The BBC. Great memories. Loved the show Steve❤️

I have listen to Steve Wright Afternoon Show all through out my life from Radio 1 during my schools years in the 80's to Radio 2 in 1999, Loved Mr Angry Mr Mad and Sid the Manager. Steve Wright afternoon show had a good run and all good things must come to an end sometime.

You are so "Wright" I dont get their thinking. SW is a massive draw. Fair enough if he wanted to leave, pastures new and all that but you get the feeling that some "manager" has decided its time for a change - just for the sake of it... if that's the case then Ken Bruce/pop master better watch out... totally ridiculous decision...
@@acousticsoundz1985 I dread the day KB goes. So few genuinely talented DJs left. Ken Bruce - like many say here about Steve Wright - got me through some tough times. The warmth these two have - and the not taking their audience for granted - plus (a huge plus) really knowing their music and caring about it.

I’m a Plumber Gas Engineer and I’ve always had Radio 1/2 forever … Everyday no matter what’s happening in the world in my own life. Steve’s always been there everyday.

Yes - that continuity, the warm tone, the "trust" that he'll play music we will like. The genuine interest in "the listener" and the guests. He really cared about putting on a good show but with a light touch.
I remember listening to Steve doing the Mr Mad after school, always loved listening to him, such an iconic voice. Will not be the same without him. I will stop listening now!! Just be tuning in on Sunday then

RIP Steve. And thank you for getting me thru some dark days when I was seriously injured in a car crash in March 2020, when I was in Kings College Hospital and of course during my rehab.
Always intended writing a letter to Steve to tell him exactly what's been conveyed in the comments here. So much work goes into producing his shows. His voice is perfect. Never pretentious and always respectful towards his audience. Subtle sense of humour. Will never forget the Pretentious Music Journalist... "Steve, that track you just played was a sonic cathedral of sound" 😂👏👏👏👍😎😃
