- Steve Wright has been remembered as a broadcaster who was “born to be in a studio” and whose “heart soared when he was on the air”.
The radio DJ, who has died at the age of 69, was a fixture on BBC Radio 1 and then Radio 2 for more than four decades, attracting millions of listeners.
Nicky Campbell, who was his colleague for many years, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “It’s where he belonged. He was absolutely born to be in a studio, it’s where he thrived. It was his natural habitat.
“His heart soared when he was on the air and that was contagious. Our hearts soared when we listened.”
He added: “I liked him so much. He was such good company. He was so, so funny. And he had a waspish wit and he was a delicious gossip.
“He used to gossip about this place all the time. He loved the BBC but he was so exasperated with it sometimes, so frustrated with it sometimes, so funny about it. Any time spent with Steve was pure gold.”
Jeremy Kyle and Rosie Wright are joined by radio DJ Neil Fox, who pays tribute to Steve Wright as "one of the most wonderful, warm people you will ever meet".

I loved Steve Wright. I have listened to him all my adult life. I never felt alone when I was listening to Steve. I stopped listening to the radio when he "recently" left his afternoon show.
What he said !!!
First heard Steve Wright on Radio 1 as a Teenager in the 80's. Moved on with him to Radio 2 and Top of the Pops as well. 53 now and he really was the soundtrack to our lives. Lost many showbiz personalities from my formative years over time sadly but Steve's passing has really hit me! The World of Radio without his voice is something i really don't want to contemplate. Bless you Wrighty and just simply, Thankyou. ❤
I grew old listening to this lovely guy he was a tonic to hear pure legend
I remember my Mum chuckling along to Steve Wright on our school runs, 25 years later I was chuckling along to him on my kids school runs! Amazing, when you're nice, kind and polite the public worships you. RIP "Steve Wright in the afternoooon" ❤ x.
Final nail in the coffin for Radio 2 I feel and all their own doing.
An amazing voice, amazing character, pure professional and legend. R.I.P Steve
...was thinking about what to put....difficult to put into words. ....
...He was just always there..... enough said i think.
Will miss him and never forget him
Will miss Steve’s voice in my ear he’s been there “forever” 😢😢😢
I've lost a good friend that I never met
Every walk with my rescue dog,on the local farm,Steve Wright has been in my earphones.Loved every hour of him talking.Such a lovely man. Will really miss him.
I don't do celebs, bit Steve was just like having a mate.Never nasty or snide, always a pleasure to have him I'm my ears.God bless him.I wonder why some people are born nasty and others just seem to be born nice..
Ps I don't listen to Radio2 now.Dont like Scott Mills and although Vern is a really nice guy,he just isn't my cup of tea.
See you later Steve hope to hear your dulcet tones again somewhere.😂
God bless Steve Wright 🙏 he was fantastic and young at heart. ❤
Radio 2 is finally finished, now its greatest ever presenter is no more. Rest well wonderful man
Everybody loved Steve Wright! Very sad and a huge loss to all his fans.😢
Steve Wright and ask Elvis radio gold, RIP Steve you will be sadly missed Radio Legend.😔
So sad to hear this. R.I.P. STEVE .
You brought so much joy to so many 💖
The whole Radio 1 daily schedule was brilliant at one time but Steve was the fruiting body of the day. I had a job where I had to work in lonely empty houses/offices and Steve on the radio just made my day with his funny characters and quirky observations etc etc.He today represented a time when we all felt we belonged to something and had a sense of humour.
Steve wright in the afternoon ❤ he was my favourite DJ growing up. RIP Steve 😢
Such a nice guy as well as a fantastic DJ 😢
He brought us Ask Elvis. 😂
What legend
Steve Wright in the afternoon was like a warm cup of tea and a good hug. I miss it 🎉 Rest in Peace and thank you for what you did for everyone 🙏 ❤
MR Angry😠😤😡, it was an Honour listening to you.... RIP STEVE.
I'm so sad, I need to throw the phone down.
It is the most real, kind, and generous person I've ever met in my whole life. Rest in peace, Sir Steve 🙏
Serious Jockin , Loved Wrighty. Our gen was bleesed by his wonderful afternoon show, ultimittly the best. How lucky we were.. Will miss him dearly , from a Brit in Toronto.
I wonder if he knew how much he was liked?
Loved....❤❤❤
I remember back in the 80's when on his show he said that they were moving the days so Monday would become Tuesday etc, it was hysterical people phoning in were so funny.
Steve Wright was an amazing Dj and entertainer... Growing up with his iconic voice in the background, he touched our hearts with his funny and zainy mad shows with him and the possy.. it feels like we have lost a family member.. his voice will live on.. so sadly missed
Steve wright a true legend and dj on radio one and presenter of top of the pops in the mid 80s sadly missed r.i.p
RIP Steve 💔
Steve... thank you sooo much for all the joy... you was missed as soon as your afternoon show was taken off air ... unforgiveable BBC.... Steve wright was absolutely brilliant ... so many fun times with Steve Wright in the afternoon.
The World will be a worse place without Steve in it... RIP
BBC & Radio Controller Helen Thomas HAS A LOT TO ANSWER FOR - "Quite simply a broadcasting legend.." then... WHY THE F DID YOU KICK HIM OFF AIR??? Oh right... D.E.I. quotas! Old Wrighty LOVED his job, LOVED entertaining his listeners and LOVED providing us with kindness, laughter and joy with his antics.... And so... He VERY SADLY passed away from 'A broken heart'...
BBC/Helen Thomas.... YOU REALLY F'D UP !!! You DON'T DESERVE TO BULLY US INTO PAYING THAT ANTIQUATED/ARCHAIC TV TAX ! 😠😠😠
😎🇬🇧
The German guy calling TV repair man had me in stitches, he said he had back of TV off with it on, the repair man was going hairless, the German guy it's says danger, that's likes danker thank you in German, should I touch that, the TV repair man having a meltdown down you hear a bang and silence, i will never forget it.
Disgraceful what the BBC finally did to him. I too listened to him and also stopped listening to the BBC when the pushed him out.
Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1 was outstanding radio and a joy to listen to. I will never forget that and remember it always.
The Possie ⚠️
Sid the Manager
Mr Mad
Ask Elvis
Linda Lust
Gervais the hairdresser
Hopeless Weather girl
Damian the Social Worker
Barry from Watford
The Pub singer would keep us entertained.
It was all very silly but definitely made the working afternoon pass quicker !!
My 1st job after training for 18 months as a Radar engineer in the RAF , was at RAF Locking in 1981.
In 1T hangar where Radio 1 would be playing, Steve Wright came on who I'd not heard before. I was instantly hooked.
He would go right up close to the microphone and say
"C'mon touch your radio and feel the warmth of my sincerity " 💜
I could not believe it when they axed his show in 2022
I cannot listen to Mills instead I listen to my own music collection on Spotify now.
Too young to go Steve RIP 💜
Steve Wright in the afternoon was an incredible show, (look what they replaced it with 🙄), Steve Wright was an incredible talent, thanks for all the happiness you brought to hundreds of thousands of people Steve 🙂👍
any one remember steve at a radio 1 road show ?
Useless the Weather Girl, Mr. Angry, Sid the Manager, Arnie and the Terminators, Gervais the Hairdresser, the Daleks who couldn't get a job in East Enders because they'd been type-cast.
Aaaw I am very sad to hear this. He will be much missed.

Valentines Massacare for the nation, Everyone loved Steve
Loved Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 1. Mr Angry, Mr Food and "made up name" which I still use now.
He was a pioneer just as Casey Kasem was in America. His 'Steve Wright in the Afternoon' show was my childhood through the whole of the 80s.
I'm shocked and saddened in equal measure. Gone far too soon, may he RIP.
Did he know how well he was loved/liked
COME ON YOU STEVE WRIGHT
RIP 🪦
Unfortunately he hasn’t “changed or shaped the radio industry we’re listening to now”. I wish he had.
With the exception of one or two dedicated radio people, the industry (mostly BBC) confuse popularity for talent and now, seems to drop TV presenters or failed X Factor singers in front of radio desks, thinking they’ll know what to do. They don’t !!!!
He was a one off. It’s not about making huge bucks, or being famous. It’s about the art form of Radio. And of that; Steve Wright was a total master. R.I.P.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Steve was brilliant, but for the sake of accuracy he was the first DJ I heard who said he considered himself a broadcaster and not a DJ.
Very sad to hear this
Although I've no idea who he was the tributes sound genuine.
Unique & much loved he is a legend amongst DJ's.
@@RealYourNightmare1193 Sid the Manager and Mr. Angry are weeping with grief.
Fox wishes he had a fraction of Steve’s talent and wit.
To be fair Dr Fox had a pretty good successful career in radio in the 80s and 90s, also a very solid jock
Fork the BBC for what they did to him. Rest in peace Steve

That’s sad
Really missed his Big Show in the Afternoon.
What are those at the top thinking! when they stopped his show! 🤬
Before Steve Wright DJs did a grand job without all the stupid Mr. Angry and other interruptions. Some times I would hear him and think:”Just play a bloody record”.
He must have known because a few months ago he cut back to just doing love songs and pick of the pops.
He didn't cut back, the BBC cut him back. It was never his choice to end his afternoon show.
Why did steve die?
Have you seen a recent photo of him?
Bert just say it m8. Heart attack?
Yes. He had lost a lot of weight over the past 10 years, so it's not his lifestyle@@bertmurphy8096
It's said he was nearly 30 stone true or not he was a big fella.....such a sad loss tho....listened to him every day at work....
@@njkip He had a heart operation over a year ago
Do they use the same drilling technique at dentist
I can't believe he's gone
who will crash all the records and talk gibberish constantly now?
a bob monkhouse of radio
Is that guy really a doctor?
Yes, a doctorate in business studies iirc
The sentence "The word legend is used to much, but he is one" is used to much.
Another victim of the safe and effective.
???
Easy to say, and quite possible since no cause was given, but we don't know that
Fox the guy who was arrested
After the usual false allegations - operation witchhunt
Legend, my arse.
How old are you?
@@envy99976Smarter than you.
He was a Legend
@@voice.of.reason Legendary arse.
Only important to those who listen to radio. I have never listened to him.🤷♀️
You missed out
Even if you weren't into radio , he made many special guest appearances at clubs across the country, or discos as they were then.
You missed out lol
But important enough for you to comment.
What a pointless comment!!
A very sad loss.
