The VESC is essentially a controller upgrade NOT specific for the onewheel but for many applications including long boards, scooters or anything electric with motors. The software is the hard part as its open sourced for any applications, in this case the onewheel. The XR may have more power than the GT (with Vesc) but the GT is capable of putting out as much or more power with a vesc. The more heat you can disipate, the more power you can run, this is the limiting factor although the more power you run, the faster your battery will drain so this is important to note if you like that raw torque, it comes at a cost. If they can get the software to a good spot, itll be a fairly easy upgrade and software upload. I cant wait to see where this goes, i wanted to put a VESC in my scooter but they dont currently have any good display options and few ports for necessary buttons/switches. I would love to put one in my GT when they get this dialed in...
@@yodojo3493 Nah, my GT has enough power for my 140lb frame. I would be more interested in using the Vesc or similar to upgrade my scooters rather than my onewheel tbh

New versions of enduro are coming regardless. (To add to the roster, not replace the current enduro.) I’d imagine there’ll be a center steeze with greater angles coming soon now that VESC allows for it
The problem with FM is that they are a product driven company, not an innovator or engineering focused innovator. Their product is what it is. It is not going to drastically change so all they can do a this point is exactly what you said: keep others out of the space. Looking forward to see where VESC goes. I refuse to buy a OneWheel due to all of the safety issues I have heard about.
Love your videos, this one is amazing like the others. Please show how you work your vesc/settings when you do get around to it... I really want to see how you tackle it and test your new config.

I literally have only heard but about VESC. Was wondering (if anyone here knows) how compatible it is with the GT? I know that with the GT being as new as it is and all the changes FM made there's still a good amount work to get it to XR level of after market support. Not looking to make any changes yet mind you, but I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for info and trying to educate myself on VESC and what not so I'll be more prepared when I do get to that point.

Jake, when will you post a VESC conversion video(s)? I’ve been watching the whole open source project for a while, but you’ve peaked my interest and I will be following your channel closely.
I chose not to purchase the GT being that I could not justify spending the money for what seemed like minor improvements with the new model. I am stoked that the community has given me something to look forward to in improving my XR. Excited to here the VESC will improve the carvability and range. The only other things I would like to see improve is the acceleration, top speed and torque. Im sure that will improve in time with better batteries coming out in the future.
This is good. Not at all into onewheel stuff but totally into the community telling companies to stuff it, this needs to happen everywhere, Apple, Tesla, car companies who charge monthly fees for remote starters when your car already has the hardware (and a fee for cellular service so you can use your phone isn't unreasonable but I'm talking even from your key), all the companies refusing repair parts or schematics when products used to have this stuff printed on big labels inside the product..we are letting 1984 happen but stuff like this gives me a tiny bit of hope. Keep it up!
This warms my heart guys! 🥰 Originally Kyle at FM was a hero when he invented the onewheel. But then he "shat the bed" real bad by becoming greedy, lawyer hungry, and oppressive against customer needs and legitimate criticism. Now YOU GUYS are the heroes! Users updating the VESC code and parameters, selling replacement batteries and controllers, and we are close to the point where people can buy all the parts they need to build a one wheeled board without needing to buy a single part from FM. Since we can't really call these new boards "Onewheel" maybe we should think of an exciting new name? Like a new branding for user created and developed wheels? VESCwheel? UserWheel? NotEvilWheel? fFMwheel? 😁 An exciting, open source branding that is owned by EVERYBODY (not by one greedy company) could really help to popularise the new DIY boards and make people feel more confident that this is a REAL BOARD... not just some DIY guys making different weird versions for themselves but instead is something that can be known and trusted as an alternative to the FM product. I guess that what I am saying is we need a beginner friendly, standardised, DIY wheel that people will know what they are getting (and how it will ride) when they buy the parts and bolt it together... 🤔👍
Great video, something a little counter intuitive, but if you slow down your torque tiltback (increase the filtering), it will actually allow you to get over pump track bumps without triggering it. Tho i can't promise you'll be able to find a perfect sweet spot. i doubt that you can make engage/disengage fast enough to actually help on a pump track. If you want more nose up on transition ramps, you best bet is increase the mahony kp, as that will convert forwards deceleration into a temporary tail down, and your axis of movement changes as ride a transition. Also pretty much all the the things you requested are in the works. Tho it won't be plug and play, I do want any idiot to be able to get through a config process from scratch while following an external guide. Similar to how the motor config is now, you might need help knowing how many pole pairs you have, and what gear ratio to input, but you can do it without a day of study. But this of course does not need to be the end of all progress, just the next step.
@@maynarddrivesfast804 Check out the VXwheel design. It features easy to remove splittable battery packs. Till now this was a totally custom board design, while recently I made this feature to fit the XR for easy conversion. Many details are yet to be uploaded on youtube shortly..
For someone who owns an old OG Pint and is thinking about doing the leap to a VESC, does anyone with experience on building one have any tips? Where do I start? How do I get parts?
So does anyone have any suggestions for finding a used XR so I can build a VESC? Unless somebody is going to start producing frames and motors outside of Future Motion.
Just in terms of ride, are there aspects besides carvability that you think are better than FM software at this point? Thanks for the video, I was glad to hear another positive review! I'm definitely going to build a VESC board, just curious if there are other better aspects in addition to carvability.
@@VESCmann Well I'm planning on finding out for myself, looking forward to it. And the project. Looks like lots of other people had the same idea, MakersPEV is sold out of VESCs right now. BTW your videos on lid mounted install and configuration were very helpful. I hope to eventually contribute waterproof enclosure designs, but that won't happen until after my initial build.
I love this. I mean, every sport requires innovation. FM is an echo chamber and as fun, as it is to vilify them, they're the only game in town for this type of ride. So anything that opens the playing field and makes them rethink stuff is excellent. If I had any money? I'd be looking at making kits / full-built boards that don't use the FM hub or parts. Until you can buy a kit that isn't a Frankenstein board and is all new parts, completely free of FM patents... we're still not "there" yet. If I was Chi or JW, I'd be looking into designing your own hubs and motors. Hell... I wouldn't be surprised that if in a year the TFL of C&R has a kit with FM free hub, TFL rails, JW or other battery and the VESC controller. Thats the future. Give the normies (guys like me) who want a polished off the shelf board a place to get it, but also the die hards and tinkiers a place to express themselves too. There's a market for both.
@@yoshi8706 I mean why not? Like I said, until we get to a place where you're riding a Onewheel (gonna need a new name too) thar has no FM IP things are still in the infant stage. Once we get good aftermarket hubs and motors? FM suddenly will handing out partnerships all over for parts and service.
Looks like it handles the thicker grass better than my XR. Generally boggs out, then nose dives, making it hard to ride flat trails, which is why I decided on the XR in the 1st place.
Would you still recommend a GT for someone like me who just plans to run it mostly for travel on and off street? I don't plan to do tricks with it. Just want to travel in style. I'm a late 90s/2000s BMX rider, and my mid 30s now, I just want to travel around.
I still highly prefer commuting on XR over GT because of the rim size, it is much more comfortable. Although you can push higher top speed on GT. On VESC you don’t have to choose but the app is still not user friendly especially for a first time rider
Been looking into VESC more since my brother and I both had our onewheel XRs get an E16 and finding corrosion on the BMS and pretty much the cheapest option is replacing it with a used one for 500+ dollars. Jake, when will you post a VESC conversion video(s)? I’ve been watching the whole open source project for a while, but you’ve peaked my interest and I will be following your channel closely.
Hopefully in a couple weeks or so
I chose not to purchase the GT being that I could not justify spending the money for what seemed like minor improvements with the new model.
Originally Kyle at FM was a hero when he invented the onewheel.
VESCwheel?
UserWheel?
NotEvilWheel?
fFMwheel? 😁
An exciting, open source branding that is owned by EVERYBODY (not by one greedy company) could really help to popularise the new DIY boards and make people feel more confident that this is a REAL BOARD... not just some DIY guys making different weird versions for themselves but instead is something that can be known and trusted as an alternative to the FM product.
I guess that what I am saying is we need a beginner friendly, standardised, DIY wheel that people will know what they are getting (and how it will ride) when they buy the parts and bolt it together... 🤔👍
VESCwheel would be bad, as VESC is trademarked and can lead to issues.
Monowheel? Wheelboard?
@@Jdb63 ... Superwheel!
BETTERwheel! 😎
UniWheel or MonoWheel
R.I.P FM☠
Good riddance
=-O
Just built mine and default settings were better than the xr. Have a blast
Nice that more and more riders agree this is it now! Also, with some additional mods you can make your VESC XR legal to fly and join events anywhere!
How would you go about making it legal to fly with? I mean, don't you have to remove the battery as airlines don't allow lithium batteries in planes?
@@maynarddrivesfast804 Check out the VXwheel design. It features easy to remove splittable battery packs. Till now this was a totally custom board design, while recently I made this feature to fit the XR for easy conversion. Many details are yet to be uploaded on youtube shortly..
For someone who owns an old OG Pint and is thinking about doing the leap to a VESC, does anyone with experience on building one have any tips? Where do I start? How do I get parts?
Hope you will get to that vesc build series by winter. Not sure I want to breakdown my board in the summer/fall. Big fan of your videos!
So does anyone have any suggestions for finding a used XR so I can build a VESC? Unless somebody is going to start producing frames and motors outside of Future Motion.
Fungineers makes the motors and companies like The Float Life make rails. But way easier to buy used, Facebook marketplace, eBay, etc
Well said Jake, long live the xr 👊
It’s amazing what the VESC community is doing with self balancing boards. I’m massively for the open source community with these devices
VESC LFG!!!
Glad to see when I wanna upgrade my XR when necessary I’ll have options
This looks sick!
You wanna try one?
This is so exciting. But how are you going to balance your cells without a bms. I really wanna do this but I also really want to avoid a 🔥 🔥 🔥.
You have a BMS, just not inside the board.
Looking forward to the follow up video 👊❤
I’m waiting for my vesc controller I’m hyped as F
Just in terms of ride, are there aspects besides carvability that you think are better than FM software at this point? Thanks for the video, I was glad to hear another positive review! I'm definitely going to build a VESC board, just curious if there are other better aspects in addition to carvability.
Just everything! That's no joke. Everybody who tries my vesc 84V says wow so smooth yet powerful. It's a 100% upgrade
Where are the VESC controllers purchased?
If floatlife took in broken XRs and did VESC conversions, I'd sell my XR to buy one.
Once I install mine I might be able to do that for you
👍🏾🙏🏾 Love it!😎
should i get a vesc for my gt? i like how my gt rides, but i’m exited to see this innovation and customization
Better to find a broken board like a pint to start off.
Great news... But tbh I want a Pint VESC 😅 either or I can live with a growler VESC if I can't fix my Plus 🤙🏽
Once they get their settings right, I'll switch over. This is exciting though... Is there any way to mod a Pint/ PInt X?
Very nice camera work. That person is a pro.
That’s Jeff! We took turns, I filmed him doing his ride on @TheFloatLife channel
I know fungineers and tech rails are working on hubs/motors and I’m surprised no one else has made one so far!
@@JakeLeary Seriously... imagine being able to walk into the shop and do a version "build a bear" but its off the shelf onewheel parts.
@@normie26 ..Like a build your own complete from the local skateshop? Uh, yes please! 🙏
@@normie26 yeah they finally opened an eu service centre, years too late. See ya FM!
I
Future Motion lost me when they make your board DEAD for changing your battery
Wicked. 😎👍
Been looking into VESC more since my brother and I both had our onewheel XRs get an E16 and finding corrosion on the BMS and pretty much the cheapest option is replacing it with a used one for 500+ dollars. I'd be really interested in a video where you go over your build and why you used the parts and optio s that you used. Thanks for the video
