Thank you Arthur for putting this excellent video together. I have been sewing all my life and occasionally tackling an upholstery project on my trusty little Kenmore. So my mother gave me a Mercury industrial machine to help make the tasks easier. Unfortunately, the machine was so intimidating that after I set it up it has been sitting in the same corner of my sewing room collecting dust for 10 years. My husband finally said that he would take it to the second hand store if I couldn't figure out how to use it. Your instructions were precise with the reasoning behind the functions which helped me understand the process. I spent the morning with your video and am now actually sewing with the Mercury. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your reassuring manner to give me confidence. I'm keeping the Mercury and using it! I will look for more videos you have posted. Your happy student, Helen
Well Arthur, it's been a little over a year since I first watched your video and now I own two industrial sewing machines of my own. I bought the compound feed walking foot last year, and I just purchased a straight-stitch/zig-zag industrial machine. Your video title made me curious, but watching the whole video changed my life. People can't believe that I'm now making bookbags, purses, duffelbags, wallets, tarps etc.... Without your video, I wouldn't have been curious to this whole industry. So thank you for changing my life and opening a whole new world to me. It's been very frustrating at times, but when you walk away with a completed product, it's one of the most gratifying feelings. Thanks again Arthur, you're a good man, and you changed my life.
Hello TheRicchini, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for such a GREAT compliment, if you keep moving with time, you will become a MASTER at whatever you decide to produce. Arthur
I have been teaching sewing and sewing myself for 50 years. I have to teach experienced sewers this stuff.. I is surprising how little they know about the machine. Your video is the BEST I have seen. Great job
Annie Gillespie Hi, I have a Pfaff 134-0-6 I used it for fabrics, but it cut the thread when accelerate!!however when I sew at slow speed it’s happened rarely please could you or anyone help me with my problem thanks
Thank you! Thank you! A friend of mine is giving me her industrial sewing machine. I'm a skilled sewer on a regular sewing machine, but have never even seen an industrial machine until yesterday. I have a need for one of my projects and my friend has a machine she no longer needs. I'm so thankful for these videos
I am just about to start with an industrial machine for leather and was very worried about how to use it. After watching this video I feel a lot more confident, thank you for sharing. I will pass it on.
Anthony, You are so WELCOME, There is nothing hard about using the sewing machine, most people that know how to sew want you to thing it is hard, truth is, sewing is just like driving, ever one that know how to drive and to learn, if you practice, you will start to sew and everything will be done subconscious. Arthur
@@coachgreg3 I just got a great deal on a Chandler DY-337. Just needs timed and a little TLC. Any help on timing her or direction to HELP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Arthur, you are a great teacher and inspiration. Thank you for posting this clear concise instructional video. I’d love to spend a week in your shop learning from you.
I really like this guy... Her certainly knows his machines... I like the way he is calm and relaxed when he explains... love it !! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Really liked your video.I have been sewing for about 30 years and I have only had industrial machines for the past 5 years.I have an industrial straight stitch machine, an industrial juki overlock,an industrial coverstitch machine, and just purchased an industrial blindstitch hemmer. Now, I am really able to sew just about anything I want and I just started sewing for a dry cleaner doing alterations and all the machines are finally starting to pay off.Keep making your very informative videos!
Hello Jeff, Thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for your compliment, Thank you for sharing what you do, I always tell people that, there so many way to make money with sewing. Arthur
Thank you so much for the time you took to educate us. I just threaded my first "industrial", and it all came back to me, having learned on an old heavy duty Singer. You made great points for avoiding mishaps before they happen. I am ready to sew some serious straight stitches on my Juki.
Hello Mellen Botto, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment and CONGRATULATIONS on moving forward. Arthur
I like the patience he has in illustrating the step by steps of ho to thread the machine and the overall knowledge you need to learn how to handle the machine.
This is a wonderful video for people who have purchased second hand machines from owners who are less than knowledgable, and a great refresher for people who are going back to their industrials after a while of not using them, so thank you :) Also, to answer your question, the reason why these machines are threaded left to right is because the chassis that holds the bobbin case has a hook, and this takes the thread from the top needle and carries it under the bobbin case, thus creating a loop. The machine arm then pulls the top thread up, from under the needle plate, and it's at this point that tension issues occur. (For example, if the tension is too low, the disks will not grab the thread strongly enough, so that when the arm pulls up, it pulls thread mainly from the bobbin. This leaves a lot of thread still trapped inside the bobbin housing, thus creating birds nest, or eventual needle break. It's the same but in reverse for the bobbin tension, as both tension disks need to be set to about the same in most cases, however sticky materials such as leather or PVC add a minute amount of "tension" in that the thread is harder to pull through them, thus, the tension disks need to be increased to compensate. The reverse for thin fabrics such as thin silk or chiffon.) But basically, how you insert the bobbin case, is the same direction as you should insert the thread. For domestic machines, it's front to back, for industrial machines, it's left to right. And the reason why it's pretty much always left to right is that on the right side of the needle there's the arm of the machine, on the left side there's open space, thus it's logical to place something that can sometimes be difficult to handle in the area with little interference. (Though some industrial machines do have bobbin chassis that are on the left of the needle, or behind the needle or in front of the needle, so they will need to be threaded from that direction first)
WOW, Thank you Akion, for such a detailed explanation to explain what going on with the mechanic of the sewing machine, Thank you so much for this, you have just educated me and our viewers, I want to read this and re-read it until I fully understand it, I have to refer our viewers to your post, I have never had anyone to explain the sewing machine the way you did here in your post. Thank You Arthur
Actually I'm too cheap to take my machines to get serviced. A machine service usually consists of the machine being opened up, cleaned, re-oiled, and then fixed back together. When I sent my first machine, a domestic Brother, to be serviced, the gentleman informed me "Your bottom tension was set to 0 so I adjusted it" and I felt my face drop, as on a drop feed domestic machine, the stitch tension is completely controlled by the upper tension dial. So I couldn't sew zig-zag stitches anymore as the bottom tension pulled the stitches like a corset. I vowed never to take my machines to be serviced again. And I've learned to clean them, strip clean them, fix timing issues, fix computer issues, fix motor issues, on both domestic and industrial machines and overlockers, simply because I didn't trust a guy that charged me £60 and then broke my machine. "I'm not paying some guy that doesn't know what he's doing when I can not know what I'm doing all by myself for free" But now I have a better idea what I'm doing. Perhaps a better step would have been choosing someone certified to repair my machine, but hey, I was young and inexperienced. (it still strange when I look at my manicured hands covered in black grease because I've been fiddling with a clutch motor, but I do my own nails too so it just gives me an excuse to repaint them) But, I'm glad I could help. If you know how that mysterious void under your machine works, you have a better idea what's going on when you're using it. If your thread falls behind the bobbin chassis then you have a better idea where to look. (Though obviously only open your machine up when you don't have anything to loose. I opened a £120 machine up after paying £60 for a service that was apparently required, so I had 'nothing to loose', probably don't do that on a £4k - £10k machine unless it's completely irreparably broken and you're wanting to learn why.)
I enjoy reading your comments you shared with Mr. Porter. I have been doing my nails for years. I am an army reserves veteran and your comment had me thinking. Since I was able to take apart a M- 16, clean and oil it, put it back together and pass inspection among other things for ten years, I know I have the capabilities to clean my two vintage machines because I am tired of paying these high price companies to repair my machine. You gave me inspiration. I have an old 100 year old vintage machine I never used. It's heavy and I've had it since being 14 years old. I guess it's time for me to use it especially after reading this article about a designer that makes expensive denim on a machine similar to mine. I am saving money to purchase an consequences industrial machine and half way there.
Arthur, I have a Juki 536 that I am using for Sunbrella boat canvas. Have had a few projects for skiff cover, weather covers for glass etc. You have given me lots of hints to run the machine better. Thanks for the effort in producing this video. Yes I am sharing with my son, sewing is a real craftsmen ship challenge.
Hi Arthur , This video was a blessing for me , thank you brother. I just purchased my first industrial / leather machine , it's an older Tacsew 123a and it looks like something from another planet ! I have been sowing on an old White Upholstery machine and I really enjoy sewing. I now have some confidence and knowledge about these machines thanks to your video. God bless you and your family !
Hello Roha, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your BLESSING and may the BLESSING OF GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY! Arthur
Hi Arthur, I started using sewing machines back when I was just a boy watching my mother sew. As I got older I would troubleshoot my mom's machine problems for her. I grew into a huge guy 6ft 3in tall and would still enjoy sewing when necessary. My guy friends found it funny but their wives and mothers had sewing questions for me to help them. Another pastime I had was welding up rusted cars and painting them. People asked how I knew how to sew, so I told them the principle was basically the same as welding new sections of sheet metal together. The difference is sewing the sections together with a sewing machine instead of welding them... By the way, thank you for the knowledge you gave me and I will pass it on..
Hello Teddles5169, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for be willing to pass it on, reading your story reminds me of when I was 16 years old, my girl friend brother and law was a master tailor, he wanted to teach me how to be a tailor, I did not do it because I did not want my friends to know that I was going to learn how to sew, this is one of the opportunities that I regrets the most. Arthur
I am in the process of taking custody of a singer 20u industrial machine and have been sort of dreading! You said it plain, "It's just a machine"! You are right, and I hope to get the hang of it. I'm glad i found you! Thanks!
You will do well, if you ever have any questions, this is my email address, designing-dreams@sbcglobal.net email me and I'll send you my cell number. Arthur
I could hug you. You just saved my sanity with the "thread the needle from left to right" trick. I was so frustrated because the thread was tearing as it went into the bobbin chamber and needles kept breaking. I messed with it for hours. Also, excellent tips on tension dial. I have a Juki TL98E. Thanks for posting!
Hello fannymanson, You are so WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to find our channel and to watch our videos, we are just trying to pass on to others what we have learn. Arthur
I purchased my first machine a few months ago and decided it was time to take a look at it and use it. When I first opened the box I was intimidated. Then I recalled what I heard on your video, "it's only a machine". Needless to say it was downhill from there. I now have a commercial machine Consew 205rb5 and at first use messed up the timing. Tomorrow I will attempt to repair the timing. Wanted to thank you once again for your generosity and patience you show in your videos.
Hello Terri, You are WELCOME, Thank you for sharing your experience with us, when you start making some of your products, send me some pictures. Arthur
Finally bought my machine consew 226. Had my first lesson on how to use it. Not as hard as I thought thanks to your tutorials. Thank you for sharing your gift. I stumbled across your channel 6 months ago and now I have found a passion. Hopefully I can make it to a class in Dallas in the near feature.
Hi Arthur, I can't thank you enough for this video. I have 2 industrial sewing machines my in-laws kindly gave to me and I have been intimidated by them since. Now I feel quite comfortable and not so intimidated by them. May The Good Lord continue to bless you.
Hello Nanz, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and fro your BLESSING, Just remember the you control the machine, it do not control you. Arthur
Thank you for your videos. I just bought a consew machine. Your latest video has given me the courage to machine sew my first bag. Again thank you for all your hard work putting the videos together. Rob
After watching the video, I came to the conclusion that I have to get one that I have complete control over. My other machines are treadle machines. I now have a 1883 singer improved manufacture. I got it for 200 CDN and it sews great. Had to take paint off the machine, but they painted it with oil on the base of the cast, so it was easy. The table is original and damaged a bit, but I can fix that. I had no problem going from the home version to the industrial version in the way of control. For the slow precise stitching, I can put my finger in the spokes and seems even easier than a motor type or hand crank. All I need to get now is a roller foot. Thank you immensely for the tips.
I looked at over 40 videos. I darn near gave up and this video played by itself. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FINALLY GOT THIS DARN JUKI DDL-555 TO WORK. GOING TO BUY A WALKING FOOT NEXT.
Thank you Arthur for your step-by-step video. I am an orthotic and prosthetic student and we have to sew straps and leathers in our class. I have learned many thing, even more than from my instructor. I appreciate the time you took to make this video. I was afraid of this machine, more than a band saw or belt grinder. After watching your video, I feel more comfortable to use the sewing machine with confidence.
Hello Rob, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for such a kind compliment, you will do well school and you will do when you are out of school. Arthur
You are a LIFESAVER!! I thought I was going to have to take my new Mitsubishi industrial to a service tech because it kept giving me problems, particularly with nesting on the underside. With watching your video as guidance and tinkering around with the machine, my husband and I were able to remedy the problem on our own! Thank you thank you thank you again!! :) :) :)
Hello Kelsi, You are Welcome and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for such a kind compliment! Congratulations on the start of mastering your machine!!! Arthur
Hello Teresa, Thank you for watching our videos and CONGRATULATIONS on getting your machine, send me some pictures when you start making some of your products at www.info@dallasdesigningdreams.org Thanks Arthur
Good day Arthur it's been a while we talk back in I think 2013 right after I got my Singer 20U-109. Well a lot has happen to me first off I lost my wife she is in heaven she left me on 1-19-2014 and then I lost every thing I had do to family trouble. But that is all be hind me now and I got my self a new Singer 191D-30 it's a heck of a machine too.I enjoy your videos a lot.I now live in Caribou Maine and love it here a lot.I just wanted to say hi again and keep up the good work you do for all of us here.
Hello Kenneth, Sorry to hear the lost of your wife and Thank you for sharing what you have gone through and how God have allow you to become whole again, very powerful!!! WOW, I am so honor to know you have been watching our videos from the beginning! Arthur
Arthur, thank you for making such an informative tutorial, I have been sewing for about 40 years and will be picking up my Industrial machine tomorrow, One thing you taught me was how to thread the machine even though the threading is similar to most domestic machines ,there are some very major differences when you showed how to use the foot pedal it reminded me not only of an accelerator in a car { I think for this reason it will always stay in peoples minds } also because of the similarities of my much loved and used singer treadle machine I enjoyed your hand wheel turning which most people seem to forget and most of all for passing on your knowledge to help others something many people are afraid to do your a great teacher , one I wished I would have had many years ago Thank you
Hello Sally, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for such a kind compliment and CONGRATULATIONS on getting your sewing machine, HAPPY SEWING!! Arthur
I'm 6 years late to this party but I'm glad it's still going on! Good video. I've got to go in tomorrow and re-thread a machine I'd hoped to sew can liners on - from woven plastic fiber bale wrappers. Thank you for your calm, matter-of-fact presentation. I subscribed and hope to learn more.
Thank you for showing all your great videos! People can actually watch all of your videos, and learn how to sew and make handbags...for free! I think it is great that you are so knowledgeable and trained, and you pass on your learning and skills for free. Many people would NEVER do this! Thank you, and you make beautiful things!
Hello James, You are WELCOME, I also want to Thank You for taking the time to watch our videos, our videos are not short, I realize it takes time and patient to watch our videos, we have a lot more to do for 2014, hope you keep watching. Arthur
I have always wanted to become a fashion designer; I made clothes for my teddy bears! Unfortunately, when it came time for me to go out into the world, I chose to go to a university and majored in Speech/Communications. I graduated, and I was a server and bartender. I then went back to school, and got another degree in English Education. So, I am 38 years-old, and I do love my job as an English teacher. However, I believe the dream(s) you have as a child and young adult are always with you...you cannot suppress that dream. Five years ago, I volunteered at a charitable thrift store for a summer, where I learned how to eBay and make money. After that summer, I struck out on my own. I started going to every thrift store in a twenty-five mile range collecting handbags and women's dresses. I learned a tremendous amount of knowledge about handbags; I learned every style, label, brand, designer, material, hardware, and more--down to the stitch! I finally gave up, and I sold the rest of my lot of handbags (Over 400) to one person. I was done! Now, I that dream I had years ago that I have quelled for so long is eating me up. I have no I idea where to start to design and make a (Preferably leather) handbag? Sincerely,
Hello James, Thank you for watching our videos and for contacting me, I truly understand your story, when I was 15 years old I feel in love with fashion, I had this deep passion for designing, at 16 my girlfriend brother in-law was a Master Tailor and her wanted to teach me how to be a Tailor, I turn it down, because I did not wont my friends to know that I was learning to sew, I did not have real JOY in my life until I turn 42, that is when I learn to sew and started to do what GOD had put in me at birth, one of the hardest thing to do is to start, this what I have learn to do, when ever I wanted to start something, I would just start, making hand bag are not hard, you get you a machine and start making small products, you will start making larger products, GO FOR IT, YOU WILL ONLY LIVE THIS LIFE ONCE. Arthur
Dear Arthur, Thank you for listening to me. My friends and family do not know about my dream to become a fashion/handbag designer. And, if I did tell them, they would just laugh it off anyway. Your words to me were very inspiring! Honestly, I am a little scared to try and make a small leather piece, because I am scared of failure; I am scared I do not have the skills and talent to do this. However, I have to try because I do not want to have any regrets in my life! Can I just use any type of sewing machine with a specific needle? Should I go to one of the many thrift stores and buy an inexpensive/cheap bag and deconstruct it and try to put it back together? Eventually, I would like to make my designs/patterns! I do not know where to start!? Again, thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me and write back!! Sincerely, Rob
I truly appreciate the way you take your time when demonstrating...I'm producing a better produce now that I'm learning also to take my time. You cannot rush when sewing leather --- especially on industrial mashies. Again, thank you, Mr Porter
G'Day Arthur, John from Australia. Great work! I have never used any sewing machines in my entire life (I'm aged 53) and your instructions taught me everything l need to know to get started to sew. I followed exactly, everything you said and got it right on the 3rd attempt. I was sewing before You Tube was finished showing your instructions. (I did watch the entire presentation). Did all the settings and watched out for all the things not to do and it was a great success. You're awesome, Thank You, btw I'll pass it on and brag about it. And I have put your link on my facebook page. Thanks again Arthur, Go You.
Hello John, WOW, What a awesome post, Thank for sharing your experience with us, if you can send us some pictures of some of your products, what is your face book page? Arthur

Hello John, I commend you for what you are doing, if you ever make a video to promote your service, I will do what I can to help drive viewers to your video. Thank You Arthur
Thank you Arthur! I have a Brother Industrial that has been sitting in my sewing studio for nearly 2 years..... I'm feeling more confident about using it now! Thank you........... Monique~
Thank you Mr. Porter for making this video. I am sure a lot of students and apprentices will find it useful. I have been using industrial 's since 2008. It is a s skill I shall never regret.
Thank you so much Arthur. You helped me to understand the machine from my grandmother a big bit better. Now I have to battle with the tension and I can relearn how to sew.
It's been a while Arthur but I hope all is well with you.I learn a lot from you when I first started out with my Industrial sewing machine.I now have a good servo motor on my Singer machine it sure did change how I could sew thanks so much.
Great information professionally presented in one video. Thanks Mr Porter. We bought our industrial today and will be firing it up tomorrow. We have orders that need to ship Tuesday! I was scared to death of this beast but your information is putting us on our way to be pros. Thanks again.
Thank You Arthur for a wonderful video. I have always tried to pass on things I have learned but some times it gets difficult when you are on "Auto Pilot" you tend to skip explaining steps you do not think about. You have done a wonderful job in getting into that void and with a great ease of understanding. Understanding how the machine works is essential to being able to sew without constant frustration. Tension in particular can be daunting. I recommend your videos to anyone who is interested in sewing on an industrial machine with fabrics they might be afraid of. Your patient's with your instruction is an admirable gift.
Hello Ann, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for passing on your gifts with others and Thank you for your compliments!! Arthur
This video helped me so much. I've been scared of the machine I bought two years ago and learning how to 'walk' the machine just now has resolved a lot of my anxiety about it. Thank you so much!
Hello Lauren, You are welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, just keep in mind, you control the machine, it dose not control you! Arthur
Thank you. Just purchased a pfaff 563. My wife was struggling to control and use an industrial machine. However the video was very useful and helpful. Jzk.
remain anomoyous, I apologize for just not responding to your post, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment. Arthur
What a legend ! Thanks so much for sharing your vast knowledge Arthur. I have just bought an old Mitsubishi DB-12A industrial sewing machine and added an adjustable speed servo motor & heavy duty sewing kit. Now after watching your video I feel confidant to give it a go. Cheers
I am speaking from South Africa wherever you could be, my needle could never fetch the thread from the bobbin. Your great demonstration crabbed my attention. I want to say I struggle with the needle hole. I also think I had pushed the needle too high into its cage, by doing so it became very short in order to catch the thread. But really I say this machine will not control me. I will control it. Thank you very much brother. I also must be obedient all the way through until I finally insert the thread from left to write. Love you😁
Hello Yvonne, You are welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, did you get your machine to grab your bottom thread? Arthur
I've owned a machine I bought at retail almost ten years ago. Less than two hours use and very unhappy thought about selling or trading. It was just too fast for me to even learn how to use it. Thank you! I can't wait to use it now. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Hello FlipsDream, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, when you get a chance, take a look at this video link that we did on how to slow down your sewing machine, th-cam.com/video/jomC8aFZVyY/w-d-xo.html Arthur
Thanks for your videos Master Porter, I learned the hard way how to thread my juki du-1181 by messing up a whole bunch of material, but, I learned from it. Your videos really helped me fine tune a lot of what I had learned, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I'm about to upgrade to a Juki 1541 as I learn to upholster auto seats and interiors and whatever else family and friends ask for my help with, I love this hobby and the things I'm able to create. I hope my children show as much interest as I have and I can show them how to sew, I learned the basics from my grandfather, I only wish I had paid more attention back then. God bless sir
Hello TheBitterBeard, Thank you for your BLESSING and for watching our videos, I use to watch my grandmother sew when I was a kid, when I was 13 years old, my girlfriend brother in law was a master tailor, her wanted to teach me, I did not receive what he was trying to give me, that was a lesson that I tell young people this story all the time, when someone is trying to teach you something, receive it, I have 2 sons, they do not want to do what I do, so I know how you feel. Arthur
cant thank you enough for this lesson. I won a machine on a bid for $85.00. I did a lot of the guess work but didn't know the specifics. Thanks so much I can't wait to get sewing.
Arthur, I have a singer 241-11, thought I knew something about it , I did but not enough, You have helped alot. Thank You for taking the time to post this. Thanks again, Gordon
Hello Brit A, You are so WELCOME and Thank you for watching our videos and for such a compliment, when you make some products, send me some pictures if you can, info@dallasdesigningdreams.org Arthur
Mr Arthur, Thank you sooooooooooo much for putting in the time and effort for this instructional video. I bought a Juki industrial machine and when I first used it, it freaked me out how fast this thing was. Every time I used it (6X), it scared the living daylights out of me. I ran across some stitching problems but your instruction about threading helped me figure it out. I am excited about reacquainted myself with this purchase. Keep up the good work!
Hello Champee, You are so WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, it is so great to hear that you are starting to use your machine again. Arthur
Hi there! Great video. Worked in a canvas shop, boat tops and marine upholstery and just thought I would put an idea out there. It was a really busy shop and oil can get expensive so the owner switched to using unscented baby oil. Generic brand is fine. Never had an issue and the machines ran great. He was Dutch so he liked to save money.... lol
We bought a sewing machine but we couldn't get it to work properly. We wactched your video and NOW it works !! Thanks a lot for posting this. You helped us a lot ! Thanks. And greetings from The Netherlands (europe) :-) :-)
Thee most informative video that I've seen. I've struggled with my machine for weeks, now I'm at least laying down a stitch that looks productive! thank you
Thanks for the video Arthur. I bought a used industrial machine and have had a hard time controlling it for my leather projects. I have watched a few of your videos and they have all been helpful.
Glad I found your video. I purchased a used industrial Singer and was ready to junk the thing. The thing was driving me so crazy I just threw it in my garage. Going to pull it out and give an other try. I can understand some much better seeing than reading. I was doing all kinds of things wrong. Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Hello Joe, Thank you for taking the time watch our videos, once you start back working with it, let me know if you are having any problems with it. Arthur
Thank you for a really useful video - I've just bought a second hand Brother industrial machine and this has been the most useful online resource I've found in helping me set up and start to use the machine.
not everyone can master of teaching u did it so beautifully and so clear with ur instruction . thanks for sharing this video i shall definitely share the same
Thank you Arthur, I certainly needed the industrial machine lesson. I have a singer # 120U and I had threaded it wrong. I needed to review the process of caring for my machine and you covered it well. Thank you, Clara
Great video Mr. Porter. I was given my industrial machine as a gift and it is very old, but I'm so excited to use it. My husband has been helping me try to figure it out but when I ran across your video I was elated to hear all of your knowledge on how to use my machine. My machine is a Chandler but is very similar to the one on your video. Thanks so very much for teaching so many things I needed to know on your video. If there is any way possible I'd like to know if you can help me find the manual for my machine because I've been searching on the internet but haven't found anything. I've subscribed to your channel and am excited to see any other videos you have. I'll certainly pass it on!!! May The LORD bless you even more.
Hello Mrs Carol, Thank you for taking time to watch our videos and for your Blessing! Most machines that looks like your machine works and operates the same. Arthur
Arthur, thank you so much for doing these videos. You are a true teacher. I really love that you explain why you do something it was very helpful. I just got a industrial juki and am looking forward to seeing all of your videos. Trying to teach myself and the manual is useless. Enjoyed and learned from your video. Namaste, Grace
Best explanation of industrial machines for a newbie, ever! Thanks!! Especially discussing how the tension is let off when the foot is in up position. I got caught chasing my tail on this wondering why my tension seemed so loose at times and breaking the thread at other times.
thank you very much Mr porter I spoke with you this morning about sewing machines ,I follow your advice and called sunny sewing machine ,they were really helpful l and hopefully I will buy Monday my first sewing machine ,consew 206 best regards Miguel
Super helpful video! Thanks Arthur! I never knew I could do half stitches with the back lever. That along with your speed techniques have already improved my limited skills. All the best. You rock.
Hello tdewitt1212, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, most people do not know about the half stitch, I don't even know how I knew about it. Arthur
Wow this is incredibly helpful. George Brown College requires you to know how to use an industrial sewing machine and i had no idea what it was and how it was different from my own sewing machine, but this helped so much. Saved me $400 from taking an introductory course in August!
Hello Dana, Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, it is good to hear that help you learn and save somme money, I LOVE hearing this. Arthur
Not all heroes wear capes! Thank you for this. I've felt lost and its great to find this to help me understand a used Chandler DB-j704 I bought used with no info on it. I feel much better having watched this so far.
Shared this with Vintage Sewing Machines on FB, as many there are looking into these machines for various projects. Than you so much for making these videos.
Thank you Arthur. I just purchased a Mitzi yu360cts used. No manual came with it, and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use the machine. So....I'm learning a lot from your videos :)
Hello Chuck, you are welcome and thank you for taking the time to watch our videos, if you ever have any questions about anything, don’t hesitate to reach out to me and if I can help you, I’ll be glad to do so!! Arthur
Awesome teacher!! I have started new job in November and it is frustrating to always call the supervisor to adjust my machine this video taught me a lot thank you I will continue to watch your videos
Arthur you are so good at how you do it with the tutorial so easy to follow you. I have had a Mitsubishi Industrial sewing Machine Model Dy-349-Z looks similar to yours your GLACO nearly every thing about your is almost same but I use it first few time I got it but since then I started having problems with the tension and since then never looked back alt at just packed in my basement so far I have ended up wit 4 sewing machines but I do love this Mitsubishi so much. But since I watched your tutorial I have got interested again and want to learn more from you please because I can tell you're good at explaining.
I just want to say thank you for this video. I was having trouble controlling the speed on an industrial sewing machine I was borrowing, and your instruction at 37:30 really helped me to dial in. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I don't have sewing experience and your video was my first lesson. You gave me hope that it's possible to sew beautiful items like a professional just by understanding the machine.
Alex, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, none of this is hard to do, the more you do anything, you will only get better. Arthur
Dear Mr. Porter: Your video on How To Master the Industrial Sewing Machine was so very helpful! I just purchased a new Juki DL-1181-N and was quite intimidated until your lesson calmed me down. I hope to see more of your good work! Best regards, Marsha Twiford
Hello Marsha, Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and CONGRATULATIONS on getting your machine, if you always keep in mind, it is only a machine, you control it, it do not control you. You will become a MASTER! Arthur
We need more Arthurs in this sewing world!!!

Arthur
Hands down one of the best explanation videos on you tube, thank you so much for caring to teach others in great detail,
I have been teaching sewing and sewing myself for 50 years. I have to teach experienced sewers this stuff.. I is surprising how little they know about the machine. Your video is the BEST I have seen. Great job
+Annie Bleich
Thanks for the review as I was reticent when I saw it was over 45 min long.
I need your help, i can't figure my techsew :(
Annie Gillespie Hi, I have a Pfaff 134-0-6 I used it for fabrics, but it cut the thread when accelerate!!however when I sew at slow speed it’s happened rarely please could you or anyone help me with my problem thanks
Thank you!
Arthur
Arthur Porter Thank you for your encouragment.
5 years later, I just bought a Chandler DB-j704 used and couldn't find any info. Felt lost. Can't thank @arthur enough.
Hello A.L. You are WELCOME and Thank you for watching our videos and for such a kind compliment.
Arthur
Arthur
th-cam.com/video/lRfWrdPemRs/w-d-xo.html
I like the patience he has in illustrating the step by steps of ho to thread the machine and the overall knowledge you need to learn how to handle the machine.
Hello David , Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment.
Arthur
This is a wonderful video for people who have purchased second hand machines from owners who are less than knowledgable, and a great refresher for people who are going back to their industrials after a while of not using them, so thank you :)
Also, to answer your question, the reason why these machines are threaded left to right is because the chassis that holds the bobbin case has a hook, and this takes the thread from the top needle and carries it under the bobbin case, thus creating a loop. The reverse for thin fabrics such as thin silk or chiffon.)
But basically, how you insert the bobbin case, is the same direction as you should insert the thread.
Thank You
Arthur
"I'm not paying some guy that doesn't know what he's doing when I can not know what I'm doing all by myself for free"
But now I have a better idea what I'm doing. Perhaps a better step would have been choosing someone certified to repair my machine, but hey, I was young and inexperienced.
(it still strange when I look at my manicured hands covered in black grease because I've been fiddling with a clutch motor, but I do my own nails too so it just gives me an excuse to repaint them)
But, I'm glad I could help.

How to sew stretch fabric can you tel me please
Arthur,
I have a Juki 536 that I am using for Sunbrella boat canvas. Have had a few projects for skiff cover, weather covers for glass etc. You have given me lots of hints to run the machine better. Thanks for the effort in producing this video. Yes I am sharing with my son, sewing is a real craftsmen ship challenge.
Hello Jack, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos.
Arthur
Arthur
Thank you for watching this videos and for the BLESSING that have and will pass on to others.
Arthur
Your bobbin filling method is brilliant. That’s going to save me so much time.
It has been so many years and to have this told to me step by step is very refreshing. Much appreciated. Thank you.
Hello Michael, You are WELCOME and Thank you for watching and for your compliment.
Arthur
Arthur, this is more recognition because what you do is the compliment. So, I thank you.
Michael, You are WELCOME.
Arthur
Thank you. So helpful. I have a brand new (to me) 70 year old Singer. What you taught here, helped me know this workhorse better.
Hello Mrs. Smith, CONGRATULATIONS on your first industrial sewing machine, send me some pictures when you get a chance.
Arthur
thank you. I have accepted a job which I will be sewing with an industrial sewing machine. this video proved most helpful.
Hello alibabafurbal, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos.
Arthur

Sincerely,
J.Robson Koenig
Arthur
Dear Arthur,
Thank you for listening to me.
Sincerely,
Rob

Thank you Arthur! I have a Brother Industrial that has been sitting in my sewing studio for nearly 2 years..... I'm feeling more confident about using it now! Thank you........... Monique~
Hello monique, You are WELCOME and Thank you for watching our videos, just always remember that you control the machine, it do not control you.
Arthur
Thank you Mr. Porter for making this video. I am sure a lot of students and apprentices will find it useful. I have been using industrial 's since 2008. It is a s skill I shall never regret.
Hello Lorena, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment.
Arthur

Jzk.
Hello Momosar Ali, You are so WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment.
Arthur

remain anomoyous, I apologize for just not responding to your post, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment.
Arthur
Thanks, I don't have that kind of machine, mines an old Singer 400W1 which I just bought. I've sewn for years and your philosophy is true.
Cheers
Hello Stephen, You are WELCOME and Thank you for such a kind compliment and CONGRATULATIONS your machine and setup!!!
Arthur
Arthur
Excellent teacher!
Hello Laurie, Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for such a kind compliment!

I've owned a machine I bought at retail almost ten years ago. Less than two hours use and very unhappy thought about selling or trading. It was just too fast for me to even learn how to use it. Thank you! I can't wait to use it now. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Hello FlipsDream, You are WELCOME and Thank you for taking the time to watch our videos and for your compliment, when you get a chance, take a look at this video link that we did on how to slow down your sewing machine, th-cam.com/video/jomC8aFZVyY/w-d-xo.html

Hello Heide, You are WELCOME and Thank you for watching our videos and CONGRATULATIONS for getting your machine.

He was Dutch so he liked to save money.... lol

Best explanation of industrial machines for a newbie, ever! Thanks!! Especially discussing how the tension is let off when the foot is in up position. I got caught chasing my tail on this wondering why my tension seemed so loose at times and breaking the thread at other times.

Wow this is incredibly helpful. George Brown College requires you to know how to use an industrial sewing machine and i had no idea what it was and how it was different from my own sewing machine, but this helped so much. Saved me $400 from taking an introductory course in August!
