      Since discovering your videos I have tackled 6 different sewing machines with thread "issues". The BEST one was a woman who was going to THROW OUT her machine because she said it was MAJORLY JAMMED and the hand wheel would NOT BUDGE.So, I went there, she only wanted $15 to avoid THROWING it OUT, took it home and in 25 minutes I had a Brother VX-1120 that WORKS LIKE NEW! Some kind of gooey substance was ALL around the bobbin case and had to be PRIED off GENTLY in order to get all the goo off! But now it went from being a $15 possible piece of trash to an Over $100 Value Piece of TREASURE! Your videos gave me that "little push" I needed to get over my fear I would "break it", AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

    Another top threading issue, is when you try to thread the machine with the presser foot down. This closes the tension disks making the machine ready to sew, but if the tension disks are closed when you do your threading, the thread misses the tension assembly even though you may have passed it down past there correctly.

      Thank you for your video. I just got my machine out again for some living history clothes. Started out fine all of a sudden everything jammed. Cleared out bobbin, then oiled and dusted down around, changed the needle, then I took everything apart to tighten the bobbin cash-out all back together, but still had an issue- but the case didn't rattle around- I pulled the threading out for rereading- which for finally solved the problem, I just couldn't see that the threading jumped out of place.

    First.... let me tell you how incredibly happy I am to have found this video. I have taken my machine apart... cleaned the bobbin housing..which wasn't really that dirty... checked the timing... replaced the needle... and bobbin.. Then I saw this video. OMG the only thing that was wrong was that my thread was not hooked over the thread arm... Wow..

  • @LaOwlett
    @LaOwlett 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    1) Make sure your top thread is threaded with the pressure foot in the UP position. I was never taught this, and I know a lot of people weren't. Realizing this has prevented 90% of my intermittent "birds nest" problems.
    I didn't know the pressure foot and tension discs work on the same mechanism. Lifting the foot opens up the tension discs so the thread can fit between, putting the foot back down closes the discs. Learning this one simple silly thing has saved so many projects.

    I got very sick TWICE from Covid and lost 90 pounds. I don't have the money to buy new clothes, so I am making my jeans and shorts much thinner with a simple straight hem. Sadly, I have to cut off the pockets. I will save a lot of money I don't have . I feel privileged to have my Singer and am always able to fix anything I am taught. DIY is very satisfying. Lots of times my thread will break. or I get the bird nest me, nothing ss. I should take it back to my repair person, after several attempts (while it was on 1 year warranty no results, I use good quality thread, tried several bobbins, several needles, rethreaded several times. Excellent video, sir! I'm going to give my old Featherweight another try but take the bobbin case holder out this time and check for burrs from needle strikes. I use my Dremel tool to buff out those burrs.
    First thing I always try is changing the needle and that fixes the issue at least half the time. I use good needles (schmetz) and buy them by the gross. There are no fabric stores within 30 miles of me, so I hate having to stop a project for common supplies.
    You've done a great job explaining this, and your videography is wonderfully clear and so helpful! THANK YOU!

      Great video. I didn't know about the needle strikes. I'm not sure I have any plastic on my bobbin case, but if I ever have that rat' s nest problem, I'll be sure to look!I've found that sometimes I need to change the brand, type and/ or needle size, or even the weight or thread content. Also using Bottom Line brand thread for the bobbin is a life changer if you can find it. I liked the comment about getting any lint out of the bobbin case. Can also be a tension setting problem, of course. I have a Janome 6500 and it's like any thoroughbred. Everything has to be just right before the race. I've had it for years and love it. Turns out the problem was that the presser foot got on an angle, and apparently makes the machine think the presser foot was up or somerhing? (Some blog told me). Just putting something the same height next to my work to level the presser foot solved it. (I wish I'd known this before unpicking 3 times lol)

      @@kathyechano9109Could be a couple of issues. First check your bobbin casing area for any dust or fluff particles as anything that finds it sway to wrap around that area will slow it down. Is it slow ALL the time or sometimes? If your motor sounds like it is struggling I would first suggest give the insides of it a thorough vacuum and if you have NOT given it any maintenance for a while a good cleaning and fresh sewing machine oil on all the elbow joints is warranted. Also, if you have NEVER had the gears checked that is a MUST because those gears MUST have a goo fresh coat of synthetic gear grease to allow it to move smoothly. I cant remember if I have a video on machine maintenance and what to look for when your machine starts slowing down. If I do I will send you that link, if I "don't" I am DEFINITELY making one! I always have a new foot pedal (minus the wiring) that I can attach to a machine like that to see if it is just the foot pedal getting old} a lot of times the contacts inside foot pedals loosen over time and all is needed is to open it up and tighten them back down. Cleaned 🪥 out, oiled in place of joints... lifted the bobbin and the wheel on the side to help get it started and press on the foot pedal needle will not drop (like it's stuck) at all, it is electric when apply pressure on the foot pedal or leg lever up by the knee for not having to use the foot pedal it still will not budge.

      @@Tashvaldez If when pressing the foot or knee pedal lever, needle not moving, the problem could be a couple of things. Make sure that the bobbin winder is NOT ENGAGED. I am assuming that the hand wheel does not move when you are applying pressure to the foot pedal, so it could be that the lug motor belt needs to be replaced. Another problem could be that the "brushes" inside the motor have worn down and you would need to replace them to ensure a complete circuit of electrical contact.

    To smooth needle strikes on plastic bobbin cases, use a coin with a smooth edge like a penny or a nickel to press the plastic flat. The rolled/rounded edge of the coin will not cause further damage like a screwdriver or plier can.

    Thank you so much for this video. The whole time I thought the issue was with my bobbin thread and spend around 2 hours troubleshooting that. Turns out it was my top thread. Fixed in about 5 minutes after watching this video.

      I had to get some better needles, that German brand worked good. Some brands are a bit too short. You can try loosening needle set screw and pulling needle down a hair at a time. Double check threading of bobbin.

      @robertberry2671 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your needle bar height might need adjusted. Replace needle first.

      I have a singer smart … My bottom stitch not sewing properly. But it’s not bunching up. I rethreaded, then still the same problem… I read that the presser foot needs to be up while threading … I tried that and it’s sewing both sides the same now lol. Buuuuut I do occasionally get the ripped thread then I rethread and start all over. I don’t see or hear my needle hitting anything. Not sure how to fix that. It’s very annoying along with the bottom stitch not sewing correctly from earlier.

      @@Texaschic79915 I know your comment was a year ago, but this might help someone else. You don't say what type or weight thread you are using, but you may need a larger needle or another type needle with a bigger eye. So the thread has enough room inside the eye and isn't shredded by the edges of the eye. Also is your thread new? Old thread, or thread that has sat out in a room with light, dust, and sun light can be weakened and shreds and breaks easier.

    It is such a pain putting in a new needle but we should change them out after each project ie quilt. If sewing just garments it can go longer.

    Thanks for the video :) and - Ah ha! You used your left hand to thread the cotton through the machine needle. Although Im right handed and thread hand sewing needles with my right hand, ive always used my left hand to thread the sewing machine needle. It seems much easier for me to use the left hand for the machine and I get it every time with ease. Didnt realise i was doing that until years of sewing. Do other people find it essier to use the left hand for sewing machine needle too?
