What an impressive premiere episode! They accomplished so much plot wise without sacrifice characters, emotions, or pacing. They even left a little crumb that's gonna keep me full of anticipation as we continue the series.

For anyone who doesn't know, when Cassandra is in Rose's body and says, "I can't Adam and Eve it," that's an example of Cockney Rhyming Slang for "I can't believe it!" Cassandra is attempting to imitate what she thinks Rose's speech patterns would be, although it doesn't really make sense when you think about the enormous time gap between them.
Billie Piper's reaction to the disinfection procedure in the elevator was genuine shock. The crew had told her beforehand that they would be using warm water (which they did for David), but switched it out for freezing cold so as to get an authentic reaction of surprise 😆
I love that Chip is essentially modeled after himself, her favorite pattern from her favorite memory, the last time she was called beautiful. So she creates a clone with a lovely pattern based on the exact same clone with that lovely pattern.

What’s touching about Cassandra’s final act was that the old Cassandra still cared about others enough to be kind to a stranger who collapsed in front of her. Even if this personhad complimented her, a person who cared only about themselves wouldn’t sink to the floor to comfort him that way. She lost her humanity after that, but she had it once.
Apparently this episode was RTD's response to Billie requesting more opportunities for comedy. I think they all knocked it out of the park!
Guys!!!! He's wearing a Doctor Who t-shirt. We have his soul now.
(awesome reaction, Chris, you make even 'weaker' episodes 'more' and that's something not given to everyone)
I love the ending of the episode. Cassandra's taken to the last moment she was called beautiful, and it turns out that she herself was the last person to call her beautiful.
Funnily Billie's Cassandra accent is far more similar to her real accent than Rose's accent is
At the end wheb Cassandra is comforting a stranger showed that somewhere in their is a good caring person.
It also showed that she had always had to live to impress others, which deep down wasn't wgo she was, hence why she was so touched at the pure honesty of the stranger the second time he said "you're so beautiful", because people say it to her all the time with no sincerety but because shes a celebrity.
OFFICIALLY STARTING SERIES 2! I love this show ☺ Thanks for watching!
It was a bit of a bummer to see #9 go so quickly after just one season... but, I think it was because they were re-introducing the Doctor to a brand new generation of audiences. It was like they took the entire first series to give a basic rundown of who the Doctor is, what he can do, and the types of adventures he'll get into.
Now, that we're into a fresh new Doctor, we can take out time. But, do not mistake "take our time" to mean "relax". Hold on tight, my friend...things are going to get truly exciting!
Woo-WHO, I love the Doctor!
Or Season 28 depending on how you count it 😜 Glad you're enjoying it. I've been looking forward to these videos every week.
A chav is someone who's common. Probably the closest American comparison would be trailer trash
Chav is British slang for antisocial youth, usually stereotypically categorised as lower class white people. An American equivalent would be “white trash.”
I love Cassandra in the Doctor's body because it cracks me up - "You think he's a little bit foxy, don't you?" Plus, hang on for season 2 because it's a great one. You get old friends and new ones, an introduction to a classic enemy on par with the Daleks, and the Doctor and Rose running towards danger a lot more. Have fun!
I'm a walking doodle lives in my head. Growing up I wanted tattoos so now with a full arm of tattoos I think of that phrase
The end of this episode always makes me cry. Cassandra didn’t start out as a villain. She, like all of us, just wanted to feel accepted - and her beauty was the road to that acceptance. A road she couldn’t abandon after going too far down it. Tragic stuff, really, and heartbreakingly human.
Doctor Who proving just how good it is at emotions by somehow making us sad about Cassandra's of all people's death.
The Doctor's casual reaction to Rose's kissing him.
my absolute favorite part of this episode is billie fighting for her life and trying not break during david's "you've been lookingggggg" she's normally so composed and it's moments like this that showcase the close friendship they cultivated on set
"You had something to tell me."
"It can wait."
"Does it have to?"
All the time in the universe, and The Doctor still gets impatient about secrets being revealed in theor own time. 🤣
Man, I LOVE Billie Piper's performance as Cassandra in this. She's an absolute delight. The changes in her voice, body language, facial expressions... she becomes a completely different character. All those little details, too - like her constantly fussing with her hair and clothes as Cassandra gets reacquainted with having a body again, or hiding her knockout perfume down Rose's cleavage, femme-fatale style. She even wore a Wonderbra whilst filming those scenes to differentiate the two characters! 😂
Love the acting in this episode so much. Fun fact if no one's mentioned it yet; Billie's actual voice is closer to the voice she's doing for Cassandra!Rose than it is Rose's regular voice. I know this ep gets mixed reviews, but I think it's emotional and honestly a realistic portrayal of how people treat sickness and sick people (speaking as a disabled person who's currently 3+ years into a pandemic where people like me have been told our isolation and sickness/death is worth it if other people can live)
Billie didn't actually know about the disinfectant scene so thats a genuine reaction. chav is a classist slang term for working class people (what cassandra calls rose) which stands for Counsel Housing And Violence (and is also a Roma word for child I believe so it has anti-roma connotations too)
Chav is a slang word for someone who’s a bit rough around the edges, normally working class - it’s a very specific British thing
CHAV is a slur for poor/working class people- it stands for Council-Housed And Violent
It's also usually derogatory. I think the closest American equivalent might be "trailer trash".
Actually, now I've said that, I wonder if there are people who proudly self identify as chavs without realising the rest of us use it as an insult? 😮
CHAV: Council House and Violence
@@davidmeadows3351Not exactly, since chav is usually applied to people who live in urban, inner city areas and live on council estates - which I don’t think has an American equivalent? Whereas, as I understand it, trailer trash is a term for impoverished rural populations.
It’s definitely comparable as a slur for working class white populations in both countries, but it has a different connotation regarding where you’d expect to find them.
Ahhh the enigmatic Face of Boe... Love that guy.
The fact that I generally overlook this episode, and yet as you say - it's actually quite good - is hopefully a sign of just how good the rest of this season is. Well... Mostly.
I look forward to these every week 👍
So glad! I look forward to watching every week 😊
Same they are great ! The enjoyment at seeing these, years later is joyful.
So do I!! 😄🥳
can't wait for some of the bangers season 2 has to offer!
I can’t wait!
Hadn't seen this since original broadcast, I'd forgotten how much fun and, in the end, genuinely touching it was. Great stuff, and great reaction as always Chris - so happy you're doing this.
I'm sure you didn't plan it this way, but thank you for reminding me that Tennant's Tenth was a great Doctor, the timing is fortuitous. This 2nd season benefits from its own confidence, the first season was so well-received and Dr Who had re-established itself as the centrepiece of a Saturday evening, where it should always be, everyone was on a roll and it showed, this is fun TV. Cassandra's "I'm a chav!" line probably registered on the Richter Scale as so many British people fell off their chairs laughing, it was a perfect line, but I think you had to be British to get it. Loving your enjoyment.
Hooray! Not only am I thankful to you for reacting, editing, and uploading these, I'm delighted that you're so clearly *enjoying* the show.
Almost all of the reasons the show overcomes budgetary shortcomings, dated special effects, and ludicrous plot lines, are on display in this episode. Doctor Who has *HEART* . No matter the peripheral details, the story focuses on the astonishing potential within humanity, the power of hope, and the joy of living.
The creators, writers, and showrunners of Doctor Who subscribe to the 'old school' of story-telling, that with kindness and courage, good will always win. How could anyone not feel uplifted?
Another favorite! I love the body swap and chance for some comedy and different acting for the characters. This gives good "Everybody lives!" vibes again, which is nice.
It really did capture a similar feeling to the everybody lives moment. Sheer enthusiasm.
It fantastic to see you at this point. It’s reminding me of my first time through, and the thrilling deep feelings this show gave me. Excited for your continued journey!
Thanks Jeremy! I’m so impressed with the show.
Six words you never want to hear The Doctor say to you, especially not the Tenth Doctor: "I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
That’s three words.
@@richardvinsen2385 Cumulatively, yes. But it's when the Tenth Doctor says them in this order and frequency that you have to prepare yourself.
I love the ‘bitch/bit rich’ joke, especially because when 1x2 first aired (Cassandra’s first episode) rose called her a ‘bitchy trampoline’ and a few people complained about the swear, but they doubled down and snuck it in again. 😂
RTD made an interesting and bold choice for Tennant’s first full ‘episode’ as the Doctor being a body swapping one… 😏😂
Chav is a common person in the view of a posh person
Love the little emotional twist at the end....
Body swaps are always so hit or miss and I thought they did a great job with this, Tenant as Cassandra was so funny. Poor doodle man but he probably would have been happy about it. Healing the world with hugs! Thank you for the awesome reaction, have a great day!
If only Lady Cassandra told herself that she was beautiful at an earlier point her past. She would have grown up without the obsession of appearing "beautiful" on the outside, because she would have already gotten over that. But, sadly, she realized far too late that her "beauty" was literally skin deep the whole time.
As a fan of Doctor Who since the 70s, it's great to see new folks enjoying the show so much! I'm glad to have joined you at the start (of the new series), because WOW... the best is yet to come! And, trust me, just when you think you've reached "the best"... nah... still more to come, my friend. Much, MUCH more!
Ah the face of Bo. He keeps popping up. He must have some significance...
This is a fun episode. A good way to introduce the Billie Piper/David Tennant dynamic, which develops extremely well.
I always thought Chip/Cassandra told the ealier Cassandra at the end she was beautiful for her to realise she was perfect as she was and didn't need to undergo all those ridiculous operations...
As a side-note, I've just noticed you did a reaction to The Others. Did you ever realise Grace's husband was played by Christopher Eccleston? ;)
You’re so adorable 😭 love this time of the week
I’ve loved it since the early 80’s. I always love seeing someone else get so invested in it. Enjoy the ride!
But they were not people. They were just flesh. Call them flesh and blind yourself. What an amazing episode. Fun but with a really strong moral message. Dehumanize a whole people because you grew them. Very old style sci fi. You go from laughing to crying to *thinking*. Amazing episode.
Chav means someone common in England. People think it means council housed and violent
Really loving your reactions, excited you're in the Tennant era now, a great adventure is ahead!
i ;pve the way this show makes you feel things for characters you never would've expected. also love a good body swap story. great reaction!
It gets better and better, then it gets worse and worse, then it gets better again. Doctor Who is a bit of a roller coaster.
Love seeing your reactions to Doctor Who. I’m getting back into it lately. I’d been slacking lately but always have loved the show
I cannot wait for this seasons episodes 🎉🎉🎉🎉
On the way! I have no idea what's coming, but I'm thrilled to find out.
I am always excited for your reactions.
The enthusiasm you have for these episodes is so cute and endearing! It’s a brilliant show!
IN the UK, Chav/Charva/Chavvy is common/lower working class, nearest in the USA would maybe be 'White Trash'. You can get rich ones though, even Celebs. David and Victoria Beckham are Chavvy, despite being very rich and famous.
My friend John looking vacant and getting close to the Doctor at 12:57 :-)
The classic body switch episode.
Oh goodness how do I explain a Chav to an American 🤔 Chav is a kind of derogatory British stereotype, Cassandra is particularly horrified about it because she's quite stuck up and superior and Chavs are usually associated with the lower class. I don't know quite how describe them, but I know what's being referred to when I hear the word. Like an immediate social association. They're associated with a particular style and personality type, usually seen as quite unpleasant.
Rose would definitely be light Chav if we're calling her one, but there is some some crossover. She does come from an area where "chavs" would be expected. Like if you're British calling Rose a Chav is quite funny, but also on a Character level for Cassandra it shows her as a bit of a snob.
Love the diamond logo tee. ❤
You know it's really, really good writing when you suddenly are genuinely moved to tears for a character as awful as Cassandra was the whole time in such a short time for a character development.
It’s the Kajitt episode!
Not a favourite of mine but the Cassandra story is so well done. A great ending that feels so fitting as you said.
It does get better with David Tennant and there are some really good episodes coming up in the next couple seasons.
Great reaction and t-shirt! 😊
the series has some of the most popular stories to come - and some of the (ahem) least....
That shirt is hype
The plot hole that bugs me most is that most of the test subjects would be carrying the diseases the cats *don't* have cures for yet. Worse than IV cures being spread by contact
Love your T-shirt!
omg! I forgot about the face f bo! it has such a good payoff! dr who does maybe the best long arc payoffs in television
Heh, I've actually not found one case of body-swapping (or Star Trek's mirror universe characters or whatever it may be in other shows/movies/...) that I enjoyed... I fully understand that it can be enjoyable for the actors, even give them an opportunity to try and show some acting skills, but the core problem I see with it is pretty simple: There are only two options:
- If it's done "too early", the character isn't established enough for the audience to really care or notice just _how_ different they are, so the whole thing kind of goes to waste.
- If it's done with a well-established character, the *_actor_* has gotten used to the actual personality and is good at portraying that character, and the audience is used to that quality in the acting. But the body-swapped personality is different, the actor is kind of starting from scratch, it's like they're playing the original character in the very first episode (and in most series, the first episodes, sometimes the entire first season, is somewhat "rough" due to the actors needing to "find" their characters) - so the audience sees not only a different personality, but also a difference in the quality of acting.
So essentially, it comes down to doing it too early so it doesn't really pay off, or it's done later and most actors simply not being good enough to pull it off as well as their actual character (which is all too often 'covered' by an over-the-top body-swapped personality, and if they take _that_ route, then it becomes even worse when the character's friends/colleagues/... don't notice it).
This episode is one of the better cases that I've seen (especially with the Doctor not actually being fooled), but Cassandra-Rose _and_ Cassandra-Doctor are both still too over-the-top, I just don't buy it.
I love this episode
The face of boe..... amazing, just wait😊
Oh and no Non-Brits ever know what a chav is. It’s quite a colloquial word and has gone a bit out of fashion since, but it’s kinda similar to the phrase ‘trailer trash’ in American English.
Love the shirt
I never understood Cassandra wanting someone younger than Rose, shes literally 19 😂
😳 you make such a good point!!
On the point of the ending of the episode, and the emotion that RTD manages to make you feel watching Cassandra meet herself... despite how selfish and nonredeemable she is... just shows how good RTD is at manipulating his audience. It's not something that I feel is present in all of the eras of NuWho... but RTD has it with spades.
Chav? See the OED.
CHAV (n): CHAVVY (adj)
No perfect translation. Word with long complex history, possibly from a Romany word for child. First widely used in Britain in the 90s, peaking early 2000s, at which time it stereotypically described a working-class person who wore sports clothes, attitude and little else. Chav has never been a compliment, but its meanings have so spread and diluted that the term is rarely used now. But, yes, I can see why Cassandra would have called Rose a ‘chav’. (I’m not Cassandra though!)
@@johnmayhew9769 OED etymologies. Also see Karen doing a spot of chav spotting in Outnumbered. And don't forget about that discourse on King Charles the Mad and King George III, he who talks to trees.

IDK, fellow Doctor Who watchers, I'm sure you'll agree with me that the Face of Boe's message wasn't significant. No sir. Not significant at all. Absolute gibberish it was. Nope. Nothing important was ever said by the Face of Boe.
Dr who used to be so much better. The brand new ones suck so much
