SARAH JANE!!!! This was a wonderfully campy and emotional episode. Even for someone who has never seen Sarah Jane before you could feel the history and emotion behind this reunion and it flawlessly paid tribute to what was while setting up what's to come. 👏

I really love this episode because Sarah Jane Smith and the 4th Doctor were my introduction to the show back in the 70s. The jealousy and fighting between the ladies that turned into laughter and friendship is fantastic, and the Doctor having no idea what's up is the cherry on top!

One thing I found so heartwarming is that David Tennant was a massive Doctor Who fan growing up. So his emotion (as the Doctor) upon seeing Sarah Jane was an emotion he (as the actor) was actually feeling when he was acting opposite her.

The redecorating line is based on a quote by Patrick Troughton the Second Doctor. He met Jon Pertwee the Third Doctor in an anniversary special, the two Doctors met in the Third Doctor’s TARDIS, to which the Second Doctor said; “You’ve redecorated! I don’t like it…”
Since then it’s become a reoccurring gag that whenever a past companion or Doctor cameos in an episode and enters The TARDIS they tend to comment on it in a similar fashion. Much to the chagrin of the present Doctor.

Fun fact. For the scene where the Doctor walks in on Sarah Jane and Rose laughing at him, David wore a huge comedy moustache so their reactions were genuine! They then re-recorded the shots of David afterwards.

    This episode is great.
"You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you." is one of the most heartbreaking lines in the show. And "I'm so old now, I used to have so much mercy. You get one warning, that was it." is one of the hardest. I'm also partial to "Bad dog." "Affirmative." xD

I always felt that as a cope out from the doctor, human beings lose their loved ones all the time, spouses get deadly disease, you cannot always grow old with your loved ones, husbands and wives die young all the time, that does not mean you abandon those you love and just run away because they might die before you.

  • @MbgFire2067

This hit more for those of that grew up with the Doctor and Sarah Jane. Also, that line about redecorating is a nod to classic Who. There are a few instances where iterations of the Doctor met each other and they always would say “you’ve redecorated, I don’t like it”, so this was the opposite reaction.

As someone who grew up in the 70s watching Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) and her travels with the 3rd and 4th Doctors, this episode has always filled me with nostalgic pleasure. Sladen’s chemistry with Tom Baler (4th Doctor) in particular was off the charts, and she’s generally regarded as one of the best of the Classic Who companions. David Tennant himself, as a childhood fan, has said he was quite star struck when Lis Sladen came on set.
So glad you’ll be watching The Sarah Jane Adventures. It’s a wonderful show, extremely well written with excellent performances all round. Like DW it gets better and better with each season.
RIP Elisabeth Sladen - we all miss her and Sarah Jane so much.
By the way, that shot of SJ walking away from the Tardis as it disappears, then turning at the last moment, is almost identical to when she first left the Doctor back in 1977.
And yes, she did indeed se the Loch Ness Monster! Maybe someday you’ll watch that, and her other adventures with the Doctor as well.

Fun fact: Sarah Jane was the companion to my "first" Doctor, Tom Baker. So this episode really grabbed me in the feels and slapped me around. I remember having such a crush on her as a kid. Dr. Who, Monty Python and Benny Hill were British shows that I watched in the 1970s as a child. I was allowed to stay up late to watch them on the weekends. Those shows helped me develop my sense of humour, which was also guided along by Richard Prior and George Carlin. So you can imagine how messed up my sense of humour is.

Yes! Channel 11 Chicago PBS station. At first for me on weekday late afternoons around 4pm, then it moved to Sunday nights around 11pm, right after Dave Allen at Large. Didn't see all of the previous versions (well Jon Pertwee anyway) until later, but was there all the way through Sylvester McCoy. (Well didn’t watch most of Colin Baker's run, I just didn't warm up to him at all. A shame, maybe I will jump into his run on BritBox)

All these years later I still get mushy in the eye area watching this. As somebody who grew up watching Sarah on the Classic Who, I was a little heart broken when she left. So this was an amazing love letter to the old school fans. And I felt like it was a great mixture of the character moments and the villain's plot. Seeing Sarah and Rose pelting each other was a great time. The actors all nailed this perfectly. Loved watching it with ya!

When sarah jane appeared, us whovians did a flip!! As others have said she was a companion from the mid 70s and covered a period between the 3rd and 4th doctors.... her popularity was such in the UK that when I recieve female blood samples from patients born around that era (I work in a haem lab) they are often named sarah jane.... in the show, she pre-dated k9 and left before he joined the crew... however during the 80s, the showrunner attempted a "spin off" of the show called k9 and company.... it was an earth bound weekly adventure story in which sarah solves crimes with the help of k9 (the doctor sends her a version to aide her)... however, it never got past the pilot show as it wasn't very good!! Lol.... in the new era its done far more successfully in the spin off series called the sarah jane adventures. .

I first encountered Sarah Jane Smith in the 4th Doctor episode Pyramids of Mars, back in the early 1980's. I was instantly in love. She is still to date my favorite companion and even knowing that she was going to be in the episode did not prepare me for seeing her again. When she and "Mr Smith" first interacted I was holding it together until he said brilliant and I got choked up. A very important piece of my past had come back and was everything it had been as a youth and then some more. I still envy you, your fresh journey into this world. I see in you everything I felt when I saw it those many years ago. Thanks for a chance to relive. Cheers man!

for older fans of the original series, this was such an emotional episode - and still is. Plus, it was great to see Sarah Jane (an established fan favourite) on screen with the Doctor one more time, after so many years. K9 was always a bit clunky, even when he was first introduced in the 1970s, but his inclusion makes all the difference to this story. He was also voiced by the original series voice actor, which adds to the nostalgia and fun! Thanks for a great reaction video 🥲

Glad to hear you are a Buffy fan! I'll consider this an anti-spolier. If you are considering not watching the spinoffs in release order (Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood), its not particularly damaging as it is with Buffy & Angel (Gem of Amara etc), but its worth watching their respective first episodes around the right time so you will get some references, concepts other things that will eventually be mentioned. Hope thats not considered too 'hinty'.

Of New Who, this is my favorite episode because Sarah Jane was the greatest of companions. Donna, Amy, Rory, Martha, all shadows and echos for Sarah Jane Smith. And Rose... She is a child's crayon drawing of Sarah Jane.
And K-9 being cheekier than normal when called a "bad dog" is adorable. One because he understands that good and bad is often based on perspective. And he is The Doctor's dog- no one can read you like your dog, and as The Doctor becomes a bad man who does good things, who still has a little mercy and so many rules, K-9 can smell it.

Glad to hear you're planning on watching the Sarah Jane Adventures. It isn't quite as essential as Torchwood, but it's still worth watching.
Also, only the first episode is full length. All the episodes are essentially half the length of Doctor Who, but they're all two-parters. So, after episode one, you can watch the remaining episodes two at a time. Which means there are only six stories per series, so there is a lot less to watch and you'll probably make it through the series a lot more quickly.
So, yeah, it's much less of a commitment than full fledged series like Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Sarah Jane Smith, as played by the incredible Elizabeth Sladen (may she R.I.P.), is so, so wonderful. Not only was she a companion in the classic show to the 3rd and 4th Doctors, and therefore a star of many older Doctor Who fans' childhoods, she also has a spin off, The Sarah Jane Adventures, set after the end of this season, which made her a star of my childhood too!
You've mentioned that you're going to be figuring out how to work the spin-offs into the mix going forwards, and I sorely hope you include The Sarah Jane Adventures and not only Torchwood. While it's geared *slightly* more towards kids than Doctor Who, which is more of an all-ages thing, but the production quality is just as good, so I'm certain you'd enjoy it!
Edit: Just got to that point in the video, so glad you're planning on seeing it!

Sarah Jane is on my Top Five Companions list, along with two Classic Who and two NuWho companions. I started watching DW in 1980 when I was 14. My local PBS station showed it at 11:00 on Sunday night, and since they edited together the entire (usually four-part) story, the episode wouldn’t end until around 12:30 am. Mom wouldn’t let me stay up that late on a school night until I started high school, then said it was my decision if I wanted to be tired in school the next day. Tom Baker was the Doctor I first and most often watched in the rerunned eps, and Sarah Jane was definitely my favorite of his companions.

I subscribed to your channel just for your "Doctor Who" reactions alone! That show has been in my life since I was born in the 70s! Sarah Jane Smith was the companion I had started watching the show with when she was with the 3rd Doctor. THAT'S how long I've been a fan.
You really should see about checking out some CLASSIC Who episodes. You don't have to do THE ENTIRE series, however there are some key episodes that get referenced in the 2005 revival series. Heck, there are about a dozen that get referenced in this one episode alone!
So, here's a list of a few pretty awesome CLASIC Sarah Jane Smith episodes from the Tom Baker era. "Robot", "Ark in Space", "The Time Warrior", "Genesis of the Daleks", "Terror of the Zygons", and "The Hand of Fear". Yes, there are LOADS of more episodes that fans would add to this list. "The Brain of Morbius", "The Seeds of Doom", "The Pyramids of Mars", etc... but, I think that those would be enough for you to get how her relationship with The Doctor went.
Anyway, I love that you love "Doctor Who" so much! SO much more awesomeness to come!

As a fan since infancy (well - I have no memories of NOT watching Doctor Who), this story, bringing back one of the most beloved companions... suffice to say RTD had us all in tears. The fact that RTD then convinced Elisabeth Sladen to do a spinoff was absolute icing on the cake. It was actually her 2nd spin off from WHO, although the first attempt in 1981 didn't get past the pilot; it was in that episode in which she was gifted K9 by the Doctor. I've watched a number of TH-camrs watching this episode, and I love that every one of you can "feel" the significance of Sarah Jane. David Tennant - a huge fan of the original series - very much loved getting to work alongside Liz in this story.

I thought it was so important that Mickey meet sarah jane. He got to see that the doctors companions can come home and grow old and survive the chaos that the doctor finds.

...it's been a while since I watched the early Dr Who episodes, but there was a season or two where the Doctor had up to five companions, including a robot called Chameleon.

Elisabeth Sladen was an early crush of mine. She joined the show for Jon Pertwee’s last year but she really clicked with Tom Baker. They got along like a house on fire and brought out the best in each other in many ways - Tom went from being virtually unknown to a TV superstar overnight and he credited Lis with helping him learn to navigate that. You might give a couple of her old stories a try - the old show wasn’t as tightly constructed or interconnected as the new one so dipping in and out won’t mess anything up for you. The unfinished business is basically as she explains it in this - classic “Who” didn’t dig as deep as the new show does. Not long after she left the show she essentially retired to raise her daughter with her husband, both of whom are also actors.
Anyone who missed the promos and watched the old show back in the day got the shock of their life when she turned up in this. The show runner basically reached out to her about appearing in the show - Lis was very active at fan conventions over the years so it’s not like she was difficult to find. She was initially a bit leery as she hadn’t acted in so long but the show runner said there was no pressure involved. If she decided this was not for her, the script would go in a drawer. Fortunately she signed on. 😊
This episode was so well received that an attempt at a spinoff was a foregone conclusion as things were at the time. Lis took to acting and starring in a show as though she hadn’t been away from it at all. “Sarah Jane Adventures” had a few great years but Lis was fighting cancer in her downtime and unexpectedly cancer won. She didn’t go public with her illness at all so her death was a massive kick in the gut. Her death caught the “Sarah Jane” people flat footed from what I remember - they had all kinds of plans in motion for the next season and they contemplated bringing back another former companion to carry on with the show but ultimately decided against it.

You should definitely react to The Sarah Jane Adventures. It's aimed at a predominantly younger audience than Dr Who, but it finds its own identity rather quickly; and offers a good breadth of storytelling (for adults, as much as young teens).
I would also hope that you'll consider doing what many other Who reactors choose to do - which is react to some stories from Classic Who as you move forward. Not too many; but that you'll seriously consider taking suggestions on certain Classic stories which are good to watch in order to better appreciate the Revived series (which, in turn, will make your reactions even better!)

Doctor Who Bingo Cards (instead of Bucket List) Is a popular expression.

    • @CasualNerdReactions
      @CasualNerdReactions  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

You're right, that is technically the expression, but I don't like saying bingo card and honestly, when I say it I usually mean "I didn't even know that was an option, I never thought I'd see it before I die, so it wasn't on my bucket list." So, I'll likely keep saying it my own way 😅

The part where Rose and Sarah Jane are cackling together, I'm pretty sure they were laughing so hard because David came in wearing a silly moustache or something 😅
I miss Elizabeth Sladen so much. She would definitely have continued to come back to the show if she hadn't passed away.
I think Sarah Jane Adventures premiered just after the Christmas special at the start of series 4. It's more of a kids show so bear that in mind but I always really enjoyed it.
Torchwood started after the series 2 finale and ran alongside series 3, ending before series 3 episode 10.
Also if it's possible to avoid seeing certain titles because of spoilers, try to avoid the title for series 3 episode 4

Yeah, the symbolism of Sarah Jane saying she liked it better before, but liked the new one, too is excellent. However, if you see what the TARDIS looked like back in her day, it's also kind of hilarious, because the mid-late 70's TARDIS was so ridiculous looking with the wood paneling like some 70's mancave. It was just so, so very 70's. So much so, I was surprised there wasn't avocado green and ugly orange shag carpet in it. 🤣

This comment goes on a bit but I promise it is relevent to the episode ont two diferent counts.
Don't know if anyone's brought this up yet but there are extensive Doctor Who audio dramas by Big Finish.
They started making them a few years before the reboot and they really threw some strange ideas at the wall. The audio dramas are now considered *canon* (as long they don't contradict the tv series).
I bring all of this up because a) they did quite a few Sarah Jane stories. And b) Anthony Stewart Head appeared in a four part series called Excellis which involved him meeting three iterations of the Doctor (all performed by the original actors)

This is a clip of Sarah Jane being left by the fourth Doctor, as spoken about in this episode. It's great for context, but not sure if you're ever planning on getting around to classic who or not. Nothing really spoilery about it (as they pretty much tell exactly what happens in this episode), but thought I'd give you the link in case you wanted to see it.
