    In the last few years, I’ve lost everything. Husband, house, furnishings , jewelry etc. etc. Now I’m slowly dying of cancer, and realize that absolutely nothing is forever, just borrowed. All that matters these days is giving and receiving kindness.

    I have always knew this as a notion. Until the earthquake hit to where i used to live in Turkey. The next two days was a shock to me, seeing it crystal clear that this life-my life was never mine. The fleeting nature of everything i have, my friends, my job, my students, my school, my home, the ground i put my foot on to. That anything can happen any time. Yes we survived, but there is no guarantee something else wont happen tomorrow and take everything else that is left. You cant possibly remain in this mindset more than 2 days, then you cant live. We have to do both. Which sounds impossible to me. Now i am living as if i will not die someday. But the understanding of certain things remained. For example i always thought that i will regret for not going to different places for not being brave, for not being outgoing etc when i am in the deathbed at the end of my life or something. But i never thought of those things. I was suffering mostly when i thought about the hearts i ve broken. For the times i couldnt hold myself and got angry at my students, even yelled at them sometimes. Saying mean things to the people i love just because i was depressed or tired. The very clear fact that i cant take any of it back. And everything is buried under ground, there is nothing to do anymore. I made peace with that. Because there is nothing to do except applying the lessons i learned on the future lies ahead of us. I hope you guys can grasp it without actually living it. Thank you einzelganger :)

      @yerpderp6800 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There were similar things I knew as a notion, like I intellectually understood it without having experienced it. But I didn't really get a lot of them until I experienced them firsthand, then I understood on a personal level. Like knowing life isn't forever is something most people understand when very young, but it tends to not sink in until a loved one dies. Only once death happens to a loved one and realizing never again can you interact with them like you used to does death really start to sink in.
      It's good to balance lessons. Nothing is permanent, and things tend to not immediately disappear, aka a lot of the time we can work towards something and the thing will still exist once we're done striving for it. I view it as a good way to prioritize stuff. Strive for the things you really want to strive for because you'll never know when you no longer will be able to. It's not good to waste time doing things that aren't fulfilling because each minute you waste is one less minute that could be spent with loved ones, achieving our dreams, helping others, etc. Easier said than done for a good chunk of people but I let this guide a lot of what I do and think, dwelling on mortality and lack of true ownership softens my heart and sharpens my ability to live a life I want to live vs living a life I think I need to live.

    • @kiaram3528

      @@yerpderp6800 very well said. I think it is wonderful because if Dwelling on mortality and lack of true ownership really softens your heart and sharpens your ability to live, then i think you have gone a good amount of way in your journey of acceptance. It still terrifies me at first, but then when i think about it a little more, there i can see the possibility of that peaceful feeling of being free from all kinds of attachments that there is.

    3) makes you feel less grateful for things you do have. reduce your needs to such a small amount that fortune cannot steal it away from you. get intimate w poverty that it doesn't feel like such a burden

    Just remember if there is for example a narcissist in your life causing you pain and suffering being with toxic people and getting rid of them isn't entitlement it is taking control of what is in your control and that is by getting the toxic out of your life as much as you can.

    • @phonesjuda7318
      @phonesjuda7318 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you, I was looking for someone talking about that circumstance. Where someone is being a piece of shit because they are deeply narcissistic and manipulative, how does one can apply all that pretension of not expecting or not being entitled to kindness of others, while not getting completely abused by this person. How could one apply Stoicism and still get bad people out of your life

    • @rush8280
      @rush8280 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, if stoicism is about knowing that you only have control over your thoughts and actions - you’re free to move away from those toxic people in your life, because that’s within your control. And the not being entitled would probably mean not feeling like you need them to be kind to you if they’re just toxic people in general

    • @conanobrian8580
      @conanobrian8580 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rush actually the principle being that you "deserve" respect and kindness from others ties in to the concept that you are not offended by toxic people but by the way your brain tells you that you are being disrespected. Therefore you should accept people for how they are cause we are all limbs of a super body.

    • @wernerbuitendag9023
      @wernerbuitendag9023 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@conanobrian8580 but keeping in mind to achieve a place of contentment you are allowed not to accept people for who they are and move forward by leaving them alone and focus on your self and people you do accept in your life. For example you have a toxic person in your life wife or husband and they don't want to be kind to you then you have the power of control to move them out of your life as much as possible in order to feel content with yourself. It's not entitlement... People that can't accept this mentality in itself has entitlement because they feel that they have to force their ideas onto others for acceptance.

    I have been subscribed to/fan of your channel for many years so far, but I'd like to say that out of all other helpful videos you've already uploaded this one is in my opinion the best of them all. I'd like to add to your wisdom that by wanting something you can't have (or as your title sad: don't deserve) you're actually giving your brain a task it cannot solve. The brain does not speak to the individual with words, but it does speak to you with a feeling of unpleasantment. Rather one chooses to address that unpleasant feeling and act on it or choses to suppress it instead and continue one's behavior is up to the individual. I don't think the individual can be blamed for not chosing the right option here, as I think the individual in that case for whatever personal reason doesn't believe yet that he or she to can become happy. Of course, there's always time to learn for as long as that individual lives. :)
    Thank you for uploading this video.

    I agree that we must remove our feeling of entitlement to things from our heads, as it is a rather foolish assumption that we own anything in this world. Anything can get legally taken away from us. Thus I am able to let go of a feeling that I deserve something, simply because I never thought I deserve it. I know that all I get is temporary. As is my life. However, there is something I cannot quite understand.
    "We know we aren't entitled to it, so why hold onto it?" you said.
    Well, does that mean I should stop feeling attachments to people? Just because I am not entitled to own a person, which I am obviously not, does not necessarily mean I should relieve myself of any emotions I feel. While I do not believe I am entitled to have a girlfriend, I do strongly believe that I am allowed to love a girl. Loving someone is not a sense of entitlement. You do not wish to own the person you love. You wish to protect them. Not because you feel a sense of entitlement towards them, not because you need them to remain in your life, but because you care for theirs. Because you wish best for them. You wish to protect them. Love is not about oneself. Love is all about the other person, and certainly not about you having an "I need to own that girl" mentality.

    I've watched so many of these and they have improved my life in many ways.
    I recently endured a short term toxic relationship falsely believing by stoic teachings that I should have the ability to endure, and make that person better through example.
    Until one day I came across a writing by epictetus surrounding the removal of toxic people.
    "Surround yourself with philosphers," and it makes sense.
    It's not about taking pain continuously but a clever way to deal with aversion until you can remove yourself far, far away from them.
    The relationship ended and I've never felt so grateful for the simple things I have in life.
    I've never felt entitled personally but the people I consequently end up being in relationships with, are by their narcissistic nature.
    I'm kind of a giggling because I know my ex narc would watch some of these with me and say "it's a bunch of shit". 😅
    So they'd never value this content with their entiltment alone 🤣🤣🤣.
    A part of me feels pain for this individual. There is nothing I can do other than control my own actions.
    I did feel angry because I did at least feel I was owed to be treated with respect by this individual, but as this video points out - it's a waste of time, especially if the other person chooses not to.
    It was infuriating. However, I've let go now. :)

This is similar to what Buddhism preaches as well: that desire is what leads to suffering. To put a finer point on it, when one loses a loved one, they are bound to feel sad, devastated even, but when one learns to observe this as a third person, they can be truly at peace. You don't have to get rid of the feeling, but watch it, much as you would watch a river flow past you. The teachings in this video match the teachings of Christianity perfectly. Funny that, how it's like living how Christ teaches us to but with the concept of God removed.
    The ideas of not desiring material things or clinging on to riches, fame, glory, approval or anything else finite and seeking satisfaction in these things is a very prevalent teaching of Jesus. The concept of treating others well even if they are horrible to you, giving without expecting anything back or loving unconditionally and the list goes on. It all fits. I personally find it beautiful how despite the way we live so divided and act as though we are so different from one another, really we are all connected somehow. And I believe that connection lies in being one of God's creations, made in His image. We're all like one big family, and we certainly do act like it too actually if you think about it. Family members have disagreements and fight all the time. Sometimes it can get violent and horrible, there is often emotional blackmail or abuse, manipulation, slander...
    But all families aren't like that, not all the time. And we don't have to be either. We just need love.

      but seriously, no. stoicism doesn’t condone the immorality of betrayal, adultery and ghosting.

    There are some useful tools in Stoicism, but I believe that it can foster indifference and encourage acceptance of the status quo. Additionally, I think it teaches people to repress their emotions and be less empathetic.

      I find this to be true as well 👍🏽 I think finding a balance between being a "stoic monk" internally, while still being meaningfully engaged with the world & yourself is the "trick" so to speak 🗣 the duality of the world strikes again! ☯️

      Hi I agree , the stoicism at the moment will be the death of us , we need action not acceptance , we should not accept slavery when there is a chance of stopping it ,

      Stoicism actually promotes action. The acceptance part comes when we can't change something

    As always thank you. Your videos have really helped me push aside that desire for more and more and working myself to the bone to get it. Im so content with a simpler life now, working less and spending time with my children and just being mindful of my life and actually enjoying it.
    Its so sad in our western society we are raised to be so driven to have the newest things, to feel if we are not pushing ourselves to work OT and make our companies more and more profit we are failures.
    Tell next time everyone :)

    "When it comes to entitlement, the world not giving us what believe we earn isn't the problem. The problem is believing we deserve something we don't." Pause for a second and reload it.

    People who talk about entitlement seemingly confuse desire for entitlement. I desire to have enough food to survive. That does not mean I feel the world owes me food or that I'm deserving of having enough food. It simply means I want it. Entitlement seems to be a strawman of desire, it is easy to explain why entitlement is bad because you define entitlement in a strange way by taking desire for something and adding a since of being owed that something. I don't believe I have ever experienced entitlement as you seem to be describing it but I do experience a lot of desire. I think if you explained the difference between desire and entitlement then your video would seem a lot more mundane and trivial.
